New York City mocked for only just discovering wheelie bins

New York City has been trolled online after discovering wheelie bins for the first time.

In order to tackle the "trash revolution", the mayor of NYC Eric Adams announced that wheelie bins will be introduced city wide, instead of the current system which is just leaving rubbish bags on the street.

Despite the introduction of wheelie bins being a great solution for the city's trash and rodent problem, many were shocked to learn that the receptacles don't already exist there.

Introducing the roll out, Mayor Adams began his press conference rolling in a bin and proudly demonstrating how to use it before celebrating with colleagues.

He said “many people thought it was impossible” that these wheelie bins were going to be part of the city’s “trash revolution”.

“We all have one unified dislike, and those are those pesky New York City rats,” Mr Adams said.

“They’re getting more and more bold. They no longer run from you. They just hang out and just do what they want. We want to make sure we change that in a real way.”

NYC department of sanitation commissioner Jessica Tisch described the official NYC bin as a “beautiful, rat-fighting piece of engineering” to conquer the estimated three million rats that dominate the streets.

The wheelie bin announcement, which was intended to impress New Yorkers, has also gone global – with Europeans and Australians baffled by concept of wheelie bins being new.

“Oh my word! Are they seriously showing their constituents how to use a trash can?” wrote one person.

“Huh, they don’t have wheelie bins? What century do they live in?” said a second.

“How the hell is this revolutionary??” agreed another.

“So they finally figured out putting your trash in piles on the sidewalk is not a good idea,” mocked someone else.

Prince Hussein's message, translated into English, reads:

"With more sadness and sorrow, we mourn the death of my wife's father, my beloved uncle Abba Faisal.

"We knew him as a generous person with good character and religion. We can only be satisfied with God's judgement and destiny. May God bestow mercy upon him and grant us patience and strength."

Khaled bin Musaed bin Saif bin Abdulaziz Al Saif, 71, served as the chairman and chief executive officer of the esteemed Al Saif Group, leaving behind a legacy of leadership and philanthropy. Survived by his wife, Azza Al Sudairi, and four children – Faisal, Nayef, Dana, and Rajwa – Al Saif's passing leaves a void not only in his family but also in the business and social spheres he influenced.

Al-Saif's absence was notably felt during his daughter's wedding to Crown Prince Hussein on June 1, 2023. The absence of Princess Rajwa's father during such a significant life event is undoubtedly a poignant aspect of her wedding day memories.

The cause of Al Saif's death remains undisclosed, adding an air of mystery to the solemn proceedings. A statement from the royal family, shared on the official website, conveyed condolences and sympathies to the bereaved family members:

"The Royal Hashemite Court mourns the passing of the father of Her Royal Highness Princess Rajwa Al Hussein, Khaled bin Musaed bin Saif bin Abdulaziz Al Saif, may his soul rest in peace.

"By His Majesty King Abdullah's orders, the Royal Hashemite Court has announced three days of mourning, as of Sunday, 18 February 2024.

"The Royal Hashemite Court expresses its deepest sympathies and condolences to Their Majesties King Abdullah II ibn Al Hussein and Queen Rania Al Abdullah, Their Royal Highnesses Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II and Princess Rajwa Al Hussein, and to Al Saif family in these difficult times."

The wedding of Princess Rajwa and Crown Prince Hussein was a momentous occasion, graced by the presence of dignitaries and royalty – including Kate and William, the Prince and Princess of Wales. Hosted at the Zahran Palace in Amman, the ceremony symbolised the union of two families and the beginning of a new chapter for the young couple.

Since her marriage, Princess Rajwa has seamlessly integrated into royal life, representing her father-in-law, King Abdullah II, in official capacities. Her grace and poise have endeared her to the Jordanian people, even as she navigates the complexities of her newfound role.

Images: Instagram

It's lovely.”

Footage of her dive saw Shirley styled in a bright blue jumpsuit as she was cheered on by family and friends before getting on the plane.

She smiled and waved at the camera as she was strapped to her skydiving instructor.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Skydive Langar (@skydivelangar)

After Shirley’s adrenaline packed skydive, she landed safely in a field and can be heard in the video exclaiming, “That was wonderful.”

When asked about her favourite part of the experience, she responded, “That was lovely, going through the clouds.”

She confessed afterwards that the free fall was a “bit breathtaking” but she “loved it” before thanking her instructor for looking after her.

Shirley returned to a hero’s welcome with her beaming friends and family congratulating her.

A spokesperson for the charity said, “We want to say an enormous thank you to Shirley for the incredible amount of money she has raised.

“Shirley's donation will provide vital support for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness. How to deep clean your kitchen bin

Cleaning the kitchen bin is household chore that can be easily overlooked until a stench begins to creep into your home.

To rid your bin of the odour, follow these deep cleaning steps so that you can have a fresh-smelling and clean kitchen bin.

1. Put on your rubber gloves

Cleaning a bin requires you to handle an object that has been full of food scraps and questionable liquids, it is best to wear some rubber gloves to protect you from the germs.

2. Empty the bin

Begin by emptying your bin and ensuring that there are no lingering food particles in the bottom. Your main objective is to remove any gunk that can be seen.

3. Wash the bin

If you have access to an outside area, take your bin outside and hose it down. If you can only clean your bin indoors, then you can do this in the bathtub. Once the bin has been rinsed, pat it down with paper towel.

4. Spray with disinfectant

Using a disinfectant cleaner of your preference, generously spray down the inside and outside of your bin. Also include the top and bottom of the bin as you spray.

5. Scrub the bin

Use a toilet brush or other long-handled nylon bristle brush to scrub your bin thoroughly. After you have finished scrubbing all over, let the disinfectant cleaner sit for five minutes.

6. Rinse and dry

After the five minutes has passed, rinse the can thoroughly. Depending on what you prefer, let the bin dry in the sun or dry it with a towel.

Once you have deep cleaned your bin, maintain your hard work by wiping down the inside and outside of the bin with disinfectant spray every time you empty the trash can.

“Rip off”: Charity shop blasted over extortionate sale

A local charity shop has come under fire for selling a pair of designer shoes for a hefty sum.

The op-shop at Palm Beach on the Gold Coast is selling a pair of gold embellished Christian LouBoutin loafers for $500 after being discounted from $1,483.

The eye-watering price tag was posted to Facebook and caused outrage among locals, as the shoes were propped up on a red velvet pillow.

A woman by the name of Jo Sherwood posted the image to the Palm Beach community Facebook page, writing, “You know when Palmy has gone really upmarket (sic) … designer shoes at Vinnies.”

Despite her claims, a spokesperson for the St Vincent de Paul Society has clarified the designer loafers were not from a Vinnies but another independent op shop in the area.

Many were quick to slam the hefty price tag, calling the sale a “rip-off”.

“It’s bloody disgusting the prices they charge on anything. I saw a Kmart dress in there last week, they were selling it for more than Kmart sold it for,” another wrote.

Others were quick to call out many op shops who seem to have forgotten who they are there for.

“Think they need to remember they are selling donated goods, not operating a boutique store,” someone replied.

Another said that “all op shops have forgotten that they are meant to be there for the poor people, not just the hipsters.”

They may have taken dollars and cents, but they have no sense,” another said.

Images: Queensland Police Service

What will happen to the thousands of Paddington Bears left for the Queen

More than 1,000 Paddinton Bears left for Queen Elizabeth II since her passing will be donated to charity.

The plush toys were left at Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle following the late monarch’s passing on September 8.

The Palace announced that the toys will be cleaned and donated to children's charity Barnardos.

They released a photo of the Queen Consort Camilla surrounded by the teddies to mark the special occasion.

Queen Elizabeth and Paddington Bear had a loveable friendship when he made a surprise appearance at the Platinum Jubilee.

The adorable skit showed the Queen sitting down for tea with Paddington Bear who told the monarch that he hoped she was “having a lovely Jubilee”.

The Queen then offered Paddington some tea as the pair discussed their shared love for marmalade sandwiches.

Paddington Bear then offered Her Majesty an emergency marmalade sandwich, something he always keeps hidden away in his hat.

In a funny turn of events, the Queen did not need the emergency marmalade sandwich as she had also come prepared with her own sandwich in her handbag.

The skit, which took the Queen half a day to film, was described better than her Olympic opening show cameo with James Bond.

Image: Twitter

Billionaire gives away entire company for worthy cause

The owner of outdoor apparel brand Patagonia has announced he will be giving away his company to support the fight against the climate crisis.

Yvon Chouinard, who has a net worth of $US 1.2 billion ($AU 1.7 billion or $NZ 2 billion), revealed he will be transferring the ownership of the company to a trust and a not-for-profit that fights climate change.

“Each year, the money we make after reinvesting the business will be distributed as a dividend to help fight the crisis,” he wrote in an open letter titled ‘Earth is now our only shareholder’ on the Patagonia website on Wednesday.

Mr Chouinard wrote that he considered multiple paths for the company, including selling it or taking it public, which involves selling the company’s shares on a stock exchange.

“Instead of ‘going public’, you could say we’re ‘going purpose’,” he said.

“Instead of extracting value from nature and transforming it into wealth for investors, we’ll use the wealth Patagonia creates to protect the source of all wealth.”
<blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; I started as a craftsman, making climbing gear for my friends and myself, then got into apparel. As we began to witness the extent of global warming and ecological destruction, and our own contribution to it, Patagonia committed to using our company to change the way business was done. If we could do the right thing while making enough to pay the bills, we could influence customers and other businesses, and maybe change the system along the way.

We started with our products, using materials that caused less harm to the environment. We gave away 1% of sales each year. We became a certified B Corp and a California benefit corporation, writing our values into our corporate charter so they would be preserved. More recently, in 2018, we changed the company’s purpose to: We’re in business to save our home planet.

While we’re doing our best to address the environmental crisis, it’s not enough. We needed to find a way to put more money into fighting the crisis while keeping the company’s values intact.

One option was to sell Patagonia and donate all the money. But we couldn’t be sure a new owner would maintain our values or keep our team of people around the world employed.

Another path was to take the company public. What a disaster that would have been. Even public companies with good intentions are under too much pressure to create short-term gain at the expense of long-term vitality and responsibility.

Truth be told, there were no good options available. So, we created our own.

Instead of “going public,” you could say we’re “going purpose.” Instead of extracting value from nature and transforming it into wealth for investors, we’ll use the wealth Patagonia creates to protect the source of all wealth.

Here’s how it works: 100% of the company’s voting stock transfers to the Patagonia Purpose Trust, created to protect the company’s values; and 100% of the nonvoting stock had been given to the Holdfast Collective, a nonprofit dedicated to fighting the environmental crisis and defending nature. The funding will come from Patagonia: Each year, the money we make after reinvesting in the business will be distributed as a dividend to help fight the crisis.

It’s been nearly 50 years since we began our experiment in responsible business, and we are just getting started. If we have any hope of a thriving planet—much less a thriving business—50 years from now, it is going to take all of us doing what we can with the resources we have. This is another way we’ve found to do our part.

Despite its immensity, the Earth’s resources are not infinite, and it’s clear we’ve exceeded its limits. But it’s also resilient. We can save our planet if we commit to it."

Image: Getty Images

Prince Charles denies wrongdoing for reportedly accepting bags of cash

Prince Charles reportedly accepted a suitcase containing €1 million ($NZD 1.67 million) in cash from a Qatari sheikh in 2015, according to recent reports - and it is one of three payments that will be reviewed by the UK’s Charity Commission.

According to The Sunday Times, the senior royal received a total of €3 million ($NZD 5.02 million) from Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani, the former prime minister of Qatar, between 2011 and 2015.

Clarence House has denied that there was any wrongdoing in Charles’ acceptance of the money as charity donations and said the money was “passed immediately to one of the prince’s charities who carried out the appropriate covenants and assured us that all the correct processes were followed”.

On one occasion, Charles reportedly received €1 million in carrier bags from high-end grocer Fortnum & Mason.

At another, in 2015, Charles accepted another €1 million in a holdall during a one-on-one meeting at Clarence House.

Two advisors from the royal household reportedly counted the cash by hand, which was said to be made up of now-discontinued €500 notes, which earned the nickname “bin Laden” because of links to funding terrorism, per 9Honey.

The money was understood to have been collected by private bank Coutts, with each payment being deposited into the accounts of the Prince of Wales’ Charitable Fund (PWCF).

As the prince’s meetings with Hamad were private, they don’t appear in the Court Circular - the official record of court engagements - but they do raise questions about how much Charles knew about the cash and where it came from.

Sir Ian Cheshire, the chairman of PWCF, said on Friday that “there was no failure of governance” in relation to the organisation receiving the funds.

“At a few hours’ notice from The Sunday Times, we have checked into this event in the past, and confirm that the previous trustees of PWCF discussed the governance and donor relationship, (confirming that the donor was a legitimate and verified counterparty) and our auditors signed off on the donation after a specific enquiry during the audit. There was no failure of governance.”

After confirming that he was referring to the 2015 payment, Sir Cheshire added: “I believe the same assurance applied to earlier donations and look forward to confirming that in due course.”

Though there is no suggestion that the payments were illegal, a Charity Commission spokesperson said on Sunday that they will be reviewed by the Commission.

“We are aware of reports about donations received by the Prince of Wales’ Charitable Foundation,” they said in a statement.

“We will review the information to determine whether there is any role for the Commission in this matter.”

It comes as London police continue to investigate a separate allegation that the prince’s top aide, Michael Fawcett, offered to help a Saudi billionaire secure a knighthood and British citizenship if he donated to The Prince’s Foundation, another of Charles’ charities.

Fawcett resigned from his role as chief executive of the foundation in light of the allegations.

“We are disappointed not to have been given more time to look into this matter, which dates from a decade ago,” Clarence House said in relation to reports from The Sunday Times.

“In the few hours we have had on a Saturday, we have confirmed that Charitable donations were received from sheikh Hamad bin Jassim, and these were passed immediately to one of the prince’s charities who carried out the appropriate governance and have assured us that all the correct processes were followed.”

Image: @clarencehouse (Instagram)

Ash Barty's huge weekend

The Queen’s Birthday long weekend has been anything but dull for retired tennis champ Ash Barty, having joined a lengthy list of Aussies recognised on the Queen’s Birthday Honours List and taking part in an icy plunge in the name of charity.

The 26-year-old was appointed an AO (Officer of the Order of Australia) after ending her tennis career having won this year’s Australian Open - making her a three-time grand slam singles champion.

Barty also took part in Big Freeze 8 - an annual sporting event that raises funds for Motor Neuron Disease (MND) - which saw her slide down the iconic Big Freeze slide into icy waters.

With costumes encouraged, Barty took to the slide while dressed as Rafiki, the baboon from The Lion King, re-enacting an iconic moment from the movie with a small Simba toy in hand.

In an interview during half-time of the event’s clash between the Collingwood Magpies and Melbourne Demons, Barty showed her true classy colours while reflecting on the slide.

“The moment’s about Simba. It’s not about me, it’s about Simba!” she told Hamish McLachlan and Tim Watson.

“At this point I’m thinking, ‘I can’t breathe, I need to get this wool off me’.

“Then it is Simba’s moment. This is the iconic moment from the movie! Why not, right?”

McLachlan said: “The beautiful thing about Ash, it is never about Ash. Couple tackle the Nullabor to raise funds for polio charity

A Tasmanian couple are jumping on their bicycles ahead of their 2750-kilometre journey - and they’re doing it to raise funds for a good cause.

Phil and Joyce Ogden, who have been members of Rotary for over a decade, are undertaking the trek from Perth to Adelaide as part of an epic fundraiser for Rotary’s END POLIO campaign.

The campaign, which was started over 30 years ago by Rotary, UNICEF and the World Health Organisation, has been driving towards the goal of completely eradicating Polio, beginning with a project to vaccinate children in the Philippines against the disease in 1979.

Now, Polio is believed to only be naturally spreading in Afghanistan and Pakistan, but according to the World Health Assembly, failing to eradicate the disease would be a “global health emergency”.

“We feel the enormous effort which has gone into turning the tide of the disease will be lost if pressure, and fundraising, is not maintained until the final handful of cases is consigned to history,” the Ogdens said in a message to all Rotarians.

With the support of their South Launceston Rotary Club, the Odgens have planned to begin their trip in mid-May and hope to raise awareness of the cause along the way.

“If we take our collective eyes off the ball, the disease will re-establish,” the couple said.

“So, we are still committed to making our personal donations every year but felt we might harness another of our passions, cycling, to push things along - once again with the assistance of Rotary.”

With limited sources of water and no shops to buy food from along the Nullarbor, the couple will carry a week’s worth of food and two days of water at a time, and they’re relying on dehydrated food which will be mailed ahead of them.

Their upcoming journey isn’t a first for the Ogdens, who have covered more than 100,000 kilometres from crossing the European Alps, the Pyrenees and the Rockies.

Heather Chong, the Tasmanian District Governor, praised the pair and described them as “adventurous philanthropists”.

The couple have started an online fundraiser with a goal of raising $40,000. As of publication, the fundraiser has already collected $10,000 in donations, with every $1 donated prompting the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to contribute $2.

Image: Supplied

Aussie artists launch global movement to help Ukraine

A group of Australian artists have banded together to help Ukrainian refugees through a global art auction.

For one artist, the cause hits close to home.

Olena Vigovska, who immigrated to Australia 26 years ago, has witnessed the devastation facing her home country from afar as the war has unfolded.

Her brother, reserve officer Andrei Vigovsky, has been fighting for his country in the city of Kharkiv since the war began, spending each night taking shelter in a subway station underground.

For Olena, she wanted to find a way to help those facing brutality at the hands of the Russian invasion.

"It's a feeling like, 'What are you going to do?'" she told ABC’s 7.30.

"It's unbelievable. I'm still pinching myself every morning."

In the second week of the war, Olena and three other Ukrainian Australian artists began putting together an auction to raise money for refugees in their home country.

"We jumped on that project with pleasure," she said.

"I feel much better now. I can use my skills to raise money and show the world how art can be so important and helpful in wartime."

The proceeds from the auction will go to Habitat for Humanity, who help house refugees and give them a second chance at life without the threat of danger.

"It will be a lot of work to rebuild Ukraine," she said.

"It's just awful to see. I hope we will be able to make a difference."

The project's organiser, Tetiana Koldunenko, told the current affairs program that the stress of the war had taken a huge toll on her and her family: many of whom live in Ukraine.

She said focusing her energy on creating art for the auction revived her and gave her some hope for the future.

"I'm absolutely sure that Ukraine will be beautiful. It will have a beautiful future."

Image credits: ABC News - 7.30 footage

Unwanted lottery win up for sale

After buying tickets for a lottery for the last four years to support a charity, a Sydney man has finally won a prize - except he doesn’t want it.

Mark Wu won a boutique, multi-million-dollar apartment block on the Gold Coast through a charity Christmas draw, according to The Sun, but has since listed it for sale.

“As far as the prizes go, well I just thought if I win, I win, but I never dreamt I would,” Mr Wu told realestate.com.au.

“When they rang to tell me, I thought it was a scam.”

Despite winning it at the end of last year, he and his family visited it for the first time in February in one of the few trips they’ve made to the Gold Coast.

“It was the first opportunity we had to come and look at it because of Covid,” he explained.

“It’s so beautiful, the way it is styled and the views over the ocean. It will be sad to let it go.

“We don’t holiday regularly on the Gold Coast, so the apartment would be sitting empty.”

Mr Wu explained that they weren’t considering moving into one of the building’s luxury apartments either, as they already own a home in Sydney, their daughters are settled into school, and they enjoy the lifestyle they’re already living.

“We are better off investing in something in Sydney, which we can then pass on to our children, so they have security in their future,” he said.

The new owners of the four-storey building will be sure to enjoy it (or at least make a tidy profit renting it out), with the high-tech block including a five-bedroom penthouse with its own private rooftop terrace.

The first and second floors are home to ultra-modern two and three-bedroom apartments with open-plan kitchens and living room areas that open out to a terrace with stunning beach views.

As for Mr Wu, he hopes to use his profits to give his kids a chance to travel overseas on a family trip.

“I never travelled as a kid and I would love my children to have that experience. For us, it’s all about the children,” he said.

While expressions of interest for the property close on May 10 at 5pm, each apartment also comes with its own title and can be sold off individually in the future.

Images: realestate.com.au
