Rolf Harris' cause – and date – of death confirmed

Rolf Harris’ cause of death has been revealed following the announcement of his passing after a battle with neck cancer.

While the information was made public on May 23, his death certificate states he died several weeks ago.

On May 11, it was speculated that Harris was gravely ill after an ambulance was spotted outside his UK home.

However, it wasn’t until May 23 that his death was confirmed.

The date of his death on the certificate was listed as May 10, one day before the ambulance was seen.

The cause of death was listed as squamous cell carcinoma of neck – neck cancer – and “fragility of old age”.

It was first revealed in late 2022 that Harris had been severely ill and struggled to communicate with people.

The gap between the date of his passing and his death certificate allowed the family to hold a funeral for Harris and cremate him away from the public eye.

In a short statement released by his family, they said Harris “died peacefully surrounded by family and friends and has now been laid to rest”.

Harris lived with his wife of 65 years, Alwen Hughes, 91, who has Alzheimer’s disease. Both needed round the clock care.

Private investigator and author William Merrit told the Daily Mail Harris was gravely ill when he saw him in 2022.

“Rolf has been very sick. When I saw him he was able to speak to me. He was with it, but he was obviously unwell,” he said.

A neighbour also shared Harris’ health had declined after the death of his poodle, Bumble in 2022.

“Only carers and nurses, who care for him 24 hours, come and go. I’m told he can’t eat anymore,” they said.

Harris was born in 1930 in Bassendean, in Perth’s north east.

He was a champion swimmer in his youth before moving to London in the early 50s’, where he studied art.

After getting early gigs working as a performer and illustrator for the BBC and ITV, he rose to fame for his art and music.

In 2005, Queen Elizabeth sat for a portrait with him.

Harris received several awards and honours, most of which were taken away. He had been appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 1968 and was appointed to the Order of Australia (AM), where he later advanced to Officer (AO) in 2012.

He was thrust into the spotlight in 2013 after being arrested as part of a UK police investigation into a string of sexual offences. He was also accused of taking indecent images of children.

He stood trial in June 2014 and was convicted of 12 counts of indecent assault against four teenage girls between 1968 and 1986, one of which was later appealed. He was sentenced to jail for five years and nine months.

Harris was released from Stafford Prison in England’s midlands in mid-2017 after three years behind bars and was rarely spotted in public afterwards.

He stood trial again in mid-2017 for separate cases of sexual assault, involving seven complainants aged between 12 and 27 at the time of the alleged incidents. He was found not guilty on three counts and was cleared after the jury failed to reach a verdict on four other counts.

Palace confirms Prince George's role at Coronation

As King Charles' highly-anticipated Coronation ceremony draws closer, the Palace has confirmed a very special role for Prince George.

Just one month before the historic event is set to take place at Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace has shared that the King's eldest grandson will have a key role at the coronation, acting as one of the four page boys attending to the King throughout the ceremony.

In total eight pages will be involved, four assigned to the King and four to the Queen Consort.

Joining Prince George, who will be nine at the time of the coronation, assisting the King as pages will be Lord Oliver Cholmondeley, Nicholas Barclay and Ralph Tollemache.

Camilla will have her grandsons, Gus and Louis Lopes, 13, and Freddy Parker Bowles, 13, helping her and along with her great-nephew, Arthur Elliot.

The news of Prince George's involvement comes as the Palace has released the official coronation portrait, which was taken last month inside the Blue Drawing Room at Buckingham Palace by Hugo Burnand.

In addition to the official portraits, the Palace shared an image of the elaborately illustrated invitation that will be sent out later this month to 2,000 guests who have secured a much-coveted place at the Coronation.

As stated on the invitation, it has been revealed that "Consort" will be dropped from Camilla's official title, as she will be referred to as "Queen Camilla" after the Coronation.

The invitation reads, "The Coronation of Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla."

When asked about the title, a senior royal aide confirmed, "It made sense to refer to her Majesty as The Queen Consort in the early months of His Majesty’s reign, to distinguish from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II."

"Queen Camilla is the appropriate title to set against King Charles on the invitation. The Coronation is an appropriate time to start using 'Queen Camilla' in an official capacity."

Image credits: Buckingham Palace / Getty Images

Harry and Meghan finally confirm their kids’ titles

Harry and Meghan have reportedly confirmed the royal titles of their children, Archie and Lilibet, in a statement.

The pair also revealed that young Lilibet had been christened in a quiet ceremony at home in California, and it was one glaring detail that caught the attention of eagle-eyed readers.

“Princess Lilibet Diana was christened on Friday, March 3 by the Archbishop of Los Angeles, the Rev John Taylor,” a statement to People read.

The same publication reported that the ceremony was attended by around 20 to 30 people, and that Meghan’s mother - Doria Ragland - and actor Tyler Perry - who is Lilibet’s godfather - were there. The British royals, despite the Sussexes having “extended an invite to King Charles, Queen Camilla, Prince William, and Kate Middleton” did not attend.

Buckingham Palace later confirmed that the line of succession list on its website would be updated to reflect this.

Archie and Lilibet had been awarded the title of prince and princess when Harry’s father, King Charles III, had inherited the throne. However, Buckingham Palace’s website had listed them as “master” and “miss” respectively, and their true titles had remained a widely debated issue upon the Duke and Duchess’ move from the United Kingdom to the United States.

And in 2021, during an interview with Oprah, Meghan even claimed that the palace “didn’t want him [Archie] to become a prince.”

She went on to explain that while the titles weren’t important to her, through her pregnancy she and Harry had the same concerns for their son should he not be recognised as a prince.

And before Archie’s birth, he had allegedly been offered the courtesy title of ‘Earl of Dumbarton’, but his parents turned it down.

“They didn’t like the idea of Archie being called the Earl of Dumbarton,” a source told The Telegraph at the time, “because it began with the word ‘dumb’ [and] they were worried about how that might look.”

Under rules established by King George V in 1917, prince or princess was a title only given to the monarch’s grandchildren through the male line, and one other family member - but not the great grandchildren. The only other family member in the direct line of succession entitled to the title is the eldest great grandson.

George, William and Kate’s eldest, holds the title of prince through this ruling. And in 2012, the late queen changed the rules so that the couples’ youngest children, Charlotte and Louis, might also carry the titles of princess and prince.

However, upon Queen Elizabeth II’s passing, Archie and Lilibet became the acting monarch’s grandchildren, and questions over what titles they would bear began anew.

Questions that have now, apparently, been answered.

Images: Netflix

Harry and Meghan’s eviction confirmed

Harry and Meghan have been asked to vacate their British residence, Frogmore Cottage on the grounds of King Charles’ Windsor Castle estate, a statement has confirmed.

“We can confirm The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been requested to vacate their residence at Frogmore Cottage,” said a spokesperson for the couple.

Charles’ decision comes as just another stage in the fallout of Harry’s memoir, Spare. In the book, Harry made numerous revelations about the royal family, and none have taken too kindly to it, especially not when considering the couple’s Netflix documentary and TV interviews.

While Buckingham Palace has not yet publicly addressed the report, many have begun to speculate, and The Daily Mirror’s royal editor Russell Myers told Today that King Charles III did in fact come to his drastic decision because of the book.

“Apparently the King has had enough,” Myers began, ”and whether he asked them to leave or told them to leave, the result is still the same.”

As with most recent discussions involving the royals, the question of whether or not Harry and Meghan would attend Charles’ coronation quickly arose. Myers seemed to be of the opinion that Harry wouldn’t dare, as this latest rejection seemed likely to be “the final nail in the coffin.”

“I have always said that Harry and Meghan have to have this big currency,” he added, “all they talk about is their relationship with the royal family, and you can bet your bottom dollar that relationship is in the gutter now.

"I can't imagine any of the family would want to see them, but you never know with them, they might turn up for a couple of days."

It was reported by The Sun newspaper that King Charles has offered the house to his brother, Andrew. However, they added that Andrew would prefer to stay in his current home.

"There are a lot of royal residences and pretty much not enough royals to put in them," Myers said of the situation.

"Andrew can't afford it, he’s having his wings clipped, and he's not going to get the big allowance he had when the Queen was still with us,” he went on. “Everyone has to tighten their belts.

"Andrew is still digging his heels in. He says he doesn't want to leave Royal Lodge, but I don't think he will have any choice at the end of the day."

Images: Getty

Meghan Markle confirms fire in Archie's nursery

Meghan Markle has revealed that her son narrowly escaped a fire that broke out in his nursery while on a tour of Southern Africa in 2019.

The Duchess of Sussex shared the story on the first episode of her new podcast, Archetypes, which featured her "dear friend" and tennis champion Serena Williams.

During the hour-long conversation, Markle discussed the devastating incident with her then four-month old son Archie while aboard on a royal engagement.

This ill-fated tour to Southern Africa in October 2019 was the last official engagement for Harry and Meghan before they stepped back from being senior working royals.

In the podcast, Meghan explained how their family had only been in the township of Nyanga for a few hours before the incident took place in Archie's nursery.

She said, "I'm giving this speech to women and girls, and we finish the engagement, we get in the car and they say, 'There's been a fire at the residence. There's been a fire in the baby's room.' What?"

She went on to explain how Archie's nanny Lauren had taken him downstairs briefly before he was put to bed for a nap, and the heater in the room caught fire.

Luckily, no one was injured during the fire, but Meghan said both her and her husband were rattled by the experience and were rushed out to attend another engagement, rather than stay with their son.

She said, "And we came back. And of course, as a mother, you go, 'Oh my God, what?' Everyone's in tears, everyone's shaken. And what do we have to do? Go out and do another official engagement?"

"I said, 'This doesn't make any sense'. I was like, 'Can you just tell people what happened?' And so much, I think, optically, the focus ends up being on how it looks instead of how it feels."

The first episode of Archetypes is available now on Spotify, and will feature a new guest each week, with next week's guest being music legend Mariah Carey.

Senior soldier confirms Ben Roberts-Smith’s story, contradicts another

A senior SAS soldier has testified in the defamation case launched by Ben Roberts-Smith, backing claims made by the veteran but contradicting another of his key witnesses.

The soldier, referred to as Person 81, began his evidence in the Federal Court on Wednesday and is likely to be the last of 40 witnesses called by Mr Roberts-Smith in the year-long trial against Nine newspapers.

The court heard that Person 81 was heading a patrol of a Taliban compound known as Whiskey 108 in Afghanistan’s Uruzgan province in 2009.

The newspapers alleged in their defence that two men who were found in a tunnel in Whiskey 108 were killed, with one elderly man being shot by a “rookie” on Mr Roberts-Smith’s orders, and the other, who had a prosthetic leg, being shot by Mr Roberts-Smith with a machine gun.

However, Mr Roberts-Smith denied the allegations as impossible and that “there were no men in the tunnel”. He said he shot and killed the man with the prosthetic leg, who was armed and running, outside the compound.

The 43-year-old said the elderly man was also killed outside the compound by another soldier who was unknown to him.

Person 81 backed up these claims, telling the court he heard no engagements at Whiskey 108 and wasn’t told of any insurgents being killed. He testified that he entered the compound after SAS troops stormed and secured the site, and that he saw Afghan civilians inside.

He also said he saw “body parts” amongst “rocket paraphernalia” in the rubble.

Defence barrister Arthur Moses SC, representing Mr Roberts-Smith, asked Person 81: “Did you see any engagements in the Whiskey 108 compound after the compound was declared cleared?”
“No,” Person 81 answered.

Moses: “Do you recall hearing any engagements while you were in the compound?”
Person 81: “No.”

Moses: “Do you recall reports of any engagements?”
Person 81: “No.”

Person 81 also said he “would have reported it” when asked if any members of his troop had told him that unlawful activity had occurred that day, as reported by 7News.

Though his testimony supports Mr Roberts-Smith’s claims, it contradicts evidence given by Person 5, Mr Roberts-Smith’s patrol commander, who said he heard gunshots from outside the compound during a “rendezvous (RV) meeting” with other patrol and troop commanders.

Person 5 told the court he discovered Mr Roberts-Smith killing an insurgent, who was later discovered to be the man with the prosthetic leg, and returned to the meeting after he confirmed the man was killed in action (KIA).

“When you went back to the RV meeting, did you say anything to Person 81 or anybody else?” Mr Moses asked Person 5 during his testimony.

“I informed Person 81 there were two KIA on the north-west corner of the compound,” Person 5 said.

Though it is undisputed that the two men were killed during the raid on Whiskey 108, the question of whether they were legitimately killed or unlawfully killed as prisoners has become a point of contention during the trial.

Mr Roberts-Smith and five other soldiers have said no men were found in the tunnel, while another five said there were men in the tunnel.

Person 4, another soldier who is alleged to have shot the elderly men on Mr Roberts-Smith’s order, has also refused to testify on grounds of self-incrimination.

Most of Person 81’s evidence was concealed behind a closed courtroom on Wednesday, and he is due to continue his testimony on Thursday before Justice Anthony Besanko.

Image: Getty Images

BBC star confirmed dead at just 21

Reiss Jarvis, the BBC actor known for his role in the 2017 drama Murdered for Being Different, was killed in a car crash with another driver who “lost control” while speeding on an unlit road.

The 21-year-old was in the front seat of his friend’s Mazda 3 and suffered multiple “unsurvivable” injuries in the crash on November 10 last year.

An inquest into his death, held on Wednesday at Rochdale Coroner’s Court, heard that Mr Jarvis’ friend, Karl Young lost control of his car while driving at “excessive speed” at around 8.40pm that night, according to The Daily Mail.

The vehicle then veered off the remote road, hitting a tree and plunging down an embankment.

Mr Jarvis was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mr Young was pulled from the vehicle and taken to hospital, where he later passed away.

The pair were returning home to Oldham, in Greater Manchester, after going to a West Yorkshire fish shop.

Our thoughts go to the family of Reiss Jarvis (21) & the driver of the vehicle, both were killed last night in a RTA in Delph, Reiss played Michael Gorman in The ⁦@sophie_charity⁩ Lancaster Murdered for being Different, TV Drama, which was based from our facilities .RIP💔 pic.twitter.com/xcjQo0kRKj

— Bacup Borough FC (@BacupBoro) November 11, 2021

Police Sergeant Neil Pennington, representing Greater Manchester Police’s Serious Crash Investigation Unit, told the inquest that it was discovered through analysis of the car’s airbag module that it had been travelling at 110 miles per hour (about 117 kilometres per hour).

However, the speed limit for the road is 50 miles an hour (approximately 80 kph), and the car was travelling at 58 miles per hour (about 93 kph) when it hit the tree.

“At the speed they were driving at, if anything did happen or a loss of control were to occur, it would be very hard for them to regain control of that vehicle,” Sergeant Pennington said.

According to pathologist Dr Abdul Ganjifrockwala’s post-mortem examination, Mr Jarvis’ cause of death was confirmed to be from “multiple fatal injuries as a result of a road traffic collision”.

Sergeant Pennington told the inquest there was no evidence to suggest another vehicle was involved in the crash.

In a statement, Mr Jarvis’ father, Darryl, described his son as “the life and soul of the party” and said his death has taken a “terrible toll” on his health.

Assistant coroner Michael Salt concluded that Mr Jarvis died as a result of a road traffic collision.

“This case highlights again the dangers of excessive speed on the roads,” he added.

“On this occasion a very talented and loyal young man has lost his life and the only explanation we have is one of loss of control of the vehicle through excessive speed.”

Image: Twitter
