7 ways to use cornflour in your beauty routine

Looking for a brand new beauty product to disguise greasy hair, blot oily skin and generally keep you looking fabulous? Hop on over to your pantry and pull out the cornflour. Highly absorbent, ultra cheap and completely gentle, corn flour has a variety of uses beyond thickening casseroles. Read on for seven of our favourites.

As a dry shampoo – If you’ve run out of your favourite “no water” hair cleanser, cornflour makes a great alternative. Lightly dust flour onto the roots of your hair with a fluffy makeup brush then comb through before styling as usual. Got dark hair? Add a small amount of cocoa to the powder to give a brunette tinge.

As an exfoliator – All out of face scrub? Cornflour to the rescue! With its ultra-fine texture, cornflour is as gentle as it is effective. Simply apply to your face with a little bit of water, massage in and rinse clean.

As a top-coat – Matte nails are on trend this winter. Turn any shade matte by adding cornflour to your top-coat. After applying your colour, pour a small blob of topcoat onto wax paper. Dip your brush into some cornflour, swirl it through your top-coat then apply to nails.

As a lipstick mattifier – If you want to get a new lease of life from your old lippie, try adding some cornflour to create an on trend matte shade. Apply your lipstick then gently pat over a layer of cornflour, using your fingers until all is absorbed.

As a face powder – Keep shine at bay with cornflour. Apply as you would your usual face powder and you’re set.

As a natural deodorant – If you’re keen to avoid chemicals, try using cornflour under your arms! After showering, sprinkle some in your hands and then gently apply to your underarms. Alternatively, mix with coconut oil in a food processor and use the paste that’s created in the same way.

As a scented body powder – For a sweat-reducing scent during the warmer months, add 10 to 15 drops of your favourite essential oil to cornflour and shake well. Store in a small jar and apply as and when needed.
