Who dies in a heat wave? How to help protect the vulnerable in our communities

Myles David Sergeant, McMaster University

Extreme heat is a silent killer.

From time to time, we hear about shocking cases of football players and other athletes who die suddenly while exerting themselves on hot days. Those deaths are certainly tragic, but statistically they are very rare.

Most deaths from extreme heat are in older people, who frequently die alone inside their homes. They often die slowly, as the heat creeps up to and sometimes past body temperature, especially when heat domes park themselves over cities and keep the temperature high all day and all night. When such deaths happen, they rarely make the news.

Of all the climate change disasters our world is already experiencing, heat is the top killer, as the World Meteorological Organization reported. The planet was more than 1.5 C above the pre-industrial baseline for 12 consecutive months from July 2023 to June 2024. In July this year, we saw the hottest three days ever on record, prompting a special statement from United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

Health risks and heat

Our bodies are made to dump excess heat when we are too warm, but that process goes into reverse when the air is warmer than our core temperature. Our other main defence, sweating, doesn’t help when humidity saturates the air, making it impossible for our own moisture to evaporate.

For the frail and elderly, who are more likely to be labouring with heart troubles, COPD or other challenges, simply sitting still in a heat wave requires an effort equivalent to walking on a treadmill. The effort is not great, but it is steady and relentless. It exhausts the body, sometimes to the point of no return.

Tracking heat-related deaths is challenging, and it’s changing as authorities become more aware of heat as a contributing or underlying factor to deaths by other causes. A paper published by the American Journal of Public Health points out that the 1995 heat wave in Chicago likely contributed to hundreds more deaths than had first been attributed to heat itself.

Who is at risk?

Many people lack air conditioning or a way to get to a place that has it, such as a library, recreation centre or shopping mall. As a result, too many people in cities are forced to endure long waves of heat — waves that are occurring more frequently, lasting longer, and reaching higher temperatures — in a trend that appears set to continue getting worse.

Air conditioning, once a luxury that drew people to summertime movie theatres on hot nights, has become a necessity. Increasingly, it is also a legal requirement, as cities pass bylaws requiring landlords not to allow the temperature in their tenants’ quarters to rise above a certain level. Toronto has such a bylaw for rental units that have air conditioning available, capping indoor temps at 26 C between June 2 and Sept. 14.

Such laws recognize the vulnerability of tenants who lack control over the temperature in their rental units, making heat death an especially urban tragedy, as confirmed in a recent Statistics Canada study between 2000 and 2020. Deaths from extreme heat were more likely in cities with a higher percentage of renter households.

During a single week-long heat wave in June 2021 — the year after the period captured in the Statistics Canada study — B.C.’s chief coroner found that 570 people died from heat-related causes — 79 per cent of them were seniors.

Taking action at the community level

From this Global North perspective, the community members who are most likely to die from extreme heat included:

Those over 65

Those with more than one chronic condition (including hypertension, mental health, diabetes, heart disease, lung disease)

Socially disadvantaged populations in our communities

Those with mobility issues

Those experiencing social isolation (living alone)

Tenants with lack of air conditioning

Those living in an urban heat island

This problem is not going away.

Some of the actions we can take to protect our most vulnerable community members include:

Increase awareness that excessive heat is not merely uncomfortable, but dangerous.

Make sure people are warned about impending heat waves.

Advocate for everyone to have access to air conditioning.

Check on and support people who live alone, especially those with no air conditioning.

Invite people over if you have air conditioning, or help them get to community cooling stations.

Help vulnerable people who do not have air conditioning to improvise, by freezing wet cloths, for example, to take out and hang around their necks. Doing this, especially with a fan blowing, can be surprisingly effective.

Learn and share the warning signs of heat-related illness.

Make sure they drink plenty of water and other replenishing fluids.

While we must do our best to limit climate change to keep our planet from getting ever hotter, we must also make every effort to protect the vulnerable from the impacts of the heat that is already here.

Myles David Sergeant, Assistant Clinical Professor, Department of Family Medicine, McMaster University

This article is republished from The Conversation under a Creative Commons license. Like all of us, she made mistakes but she taught me to value each and every day and to always seek to treat people with kindness."

She ended her post saying: "I miss her greatly."

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Sarah Ferguson (Fergie) (@sarahferguson15)

Ferguson's daughter, Princess Eugenie, reposted the images to her Instagram story, with her own message.

"Miss beautiful Granny Susie," she wrote.

The Duchess of York's post was met with messages of love from fans and celebrities alike.

"So beautiful," wrote Riley Keough, Lisa Marie Presley's daughter.

Actor William Moseley, who starred in The Royals television series left three red heart emojis.

"I lost my mother seven years ago, I miss her each and every day. Woman who died in office cubicle found four days later

The body of an employee at one of America's biggest banks was in her office cubicle four days after she passed away, according Arizona police officials.

Denise Prudhomme, 60, had used her ID to scan into the building on August 16 at 7am, four days later her dead body was found slumped over in her cubicle at the bank's office in Tempe.

“To hear she’s been sitting at the desk like that would make me feel sick,” an employee at Wells Fargo told local news outlet K12News.

“And nobody did anything. That’s how she spent her last moments.”

The employee told the outlet that several workers had complained of a foul smell when they came back to work after the weekend, but thought it was just bad plumbing.

K12News reported that another employee found Prudhomme dead at her desk in a cubicle while walking around the building, and the security guards then alerted police.

One employee said that the building's security guards should have found her body earlier.

“That’s the scary part. That’s the uneasy part,” they said.

“It’s negligence in some part.”

Prudhomme’s cause of death has not yet been released, though officials have said that based on the preliminary investigation there was no sign of foul play.

The investigation is ongoing.

Wells Fargo shared a statement with several other news outlets saying that they were “deeply saddened by the tragic loss of our colleague” and will be providing counsellors to support office employees.

They are also co-operating with police in their investigation.

Image: Larry Zhou / Shutterstock.com

World famous gay penguin dies

One half of the world famous gay penguin couple at Sydney's SEA LIFE Aquarium has died.

In 2018, Gentoo penguin Sphen made international headlines when he coupled up with another male gentoo penguin, Magic.

Shortly after meeting, the two male penguins began making a nest together out of pebbles ahead of breeding season, so the aquarium staff gave them a foster egg to care for.

Sphen and Magic raised two foster chicks, Sphengic (Lara) in 2018 and Clancy in 2020, and are among the most strongly bonded gentoo penguin pairs at the aquarium.

The penguins have inspired books, documentaries, new studies in the NSW syllabus and even featured on a float at the Sydney Mardi Gras parade.

Earlier in August, Sphen passed away at the age of 12, which is considered a long life for a gentoo penguin.

In order to help process the loss, the aquarium staff took Magic to see his partner's body to help with the understanding that Sphen would not be returning.

He immediately started singing, which was reciprocated by the colony.

"The loss of Sphen is heartbreaking to the penguin colony, the team and everyone who has been inspired or positively impacted by Sphen and Magic's story," SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium's general manager, Richard Dilly, said in a statement.

"Sphen and Magic's love story captivated the world and it's been an honour to welcome local and international fans, some of which travelled long distances to see them in real life."

"The team's focus is now on Magic, who will soon prepare for his first breeding season without Sphen."

Image credits: SEA LIFE Aquarium Sydney

Man behind viral "democracy manifest" arrest dies

Jack Karlson, the man behind one of Australia's most famous viral memes, has died aged 82.

Karlson shot to fame after footage of his 1991 arrest outside the China Sea Restaurant in Brisbane went viral in 2009 when someone uploaded it to the internet.

"Gentlemen, this is democracy manifest," he said during the arrest.

"What is the charge? Eating a meal - a succulent Chinese meal?"

"Have a look at the headlock here. See that chap over there?" he went on.

"Get your hand off my penis! This is the bloke who got me on the penis before."

Reports at the time suggested that Karlson had been arrested on suspicion of being criminal that was high on Queensland police's wanted list.

While he did have a criminal history himself as he was known for several prison escapes throughout his life, he insisted that he was the wrong man.

The reporter who reported Karlson's arrest 33 years ago, Chris Reason, confirmed Karlson's death in a social media post on X, tweeting that "Mr Democracy Manifest has died".

A fundraiser had been set up for Karlson by his niece in June after he was reportedly diagnosed with prostate cancer and needed surgery for cataracts.

“I know Jack’s video has given a lot of people joy and he has inspired many memes, t-shirts and other things over the years but Jack himself is doing it quite tough,” his niece wrote on the fundraiser at the time.

“He has never had much money but has always been generous to family and friends. He lives week to week in regional QLD with the help of a voluntary carer.

“Hoping people can dig deep – I think he’s worth at least a beer, maybe even a 6-pack.”

In an update last week, his niece said that he wasn't doing well.

“He has been in Hospital for two weeks now,” she wrote.

“He has had multiple procedures but things are not looking good.

“One thing that did lift his spirits was that the GoFundMe was taking off. He has been really appreciative of the donations and the comments.”

A documentary about his life is currently in production and set to be released in early 2025.

Images: 7News

Cause of death revealed after eight-year-old dies mid-flight

The cause of death of an eight-year-old girl who died suddenly mid-flight has been revealed.

Sydney Weston was travelling with her family from their home state of Missouri to Chicago on June 13th when she suddenly fell ill on the flight and died.

Now, according to Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood, Sydney was suffering from at least five different illnesses at the time of her death.

The eight-year-old reportedly died from complications of chronic primary adrenalitis coupled with several infections, including enterovirus and strep, as well as inflammation of the small intestines known as duodenitis and the thyroid gland inflammation commonly known as thyroiditis.

Harwood found that the long list of conditions suggests Sydney may have suffered from an autoimmune disorder which left her body attacking its own healthy cells and harming organ operation.

Sydney suffered a medical emergency onboard the flight, causing the plane to divert to Peoria, Illinois, for an emergency landing, but Sydney died after being rushed to a nearby hospital.

Results from a previously released preliminary autopsy were inconclusive but found that her body showed no signs of abuse, neglect or foul play.

At the time of her sudden and tragic death, Sydney was just a week away from celebrating her ninth birthday.

“She will forever be remembered for the happiness she brought to every single person she encountered. Our hearts are heavy. She was our baby girl and we celebrate her beautiful life,” her obituary read.
