Tourist's disrespectful Machu Picchu act slammed

<p>A tourist has been slammed online after she was filmed sprinkling her loved one's ashes at Peru’s Machu Picchu. </p> <p>The clip posted to TikTok by Peruvian tour operator IncaGo Expeditions has been taken down amid fierce backlash, but not before it was reshared on other platforms online. </p> <p>In the video, the woman stood atop one of the 15th-century Inca citadel’s terraces as she scattered the ashes. The footage ended with her taking a bow and embracing another person. </p> <p>Her actions have been slammed online, with one person saying: “may the full weight of the law fall on the person who did this act, there was no respect for Machu Picchu." </p> <p>“What is the need to do it in a universal jewel, such as Machu Picchu?” another commented. </p> <p>The sacred landmark,  has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage landmark in Peru, and is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. </p> <p>Peruvian cultural officials have also criticised the behaviour and called for greater action in preserving the history of the landmark. </p> <p>T’ika Oregón, a lawyer with the Cusco Commission of Jurists, told local media that “archaeological areas are not repositories of any type of ashes, much less of a deceased person,” reported the <em>Daily Mail</em>. </p> <p>She also claimed that the ceremony could've been a promotional stunt orchestrated by the tour operator. </p> <p>“It must be determined if it is an agency that is dedicating itself to this objective or if it is a person, and according to the level of participation, of seriousness, the maximum penalty will have to be given,” she said.</p> <p>The Ministry of Culture is currently trying to identify the woman and tour agency responsible for the desecration. </p> <p>“Machu Picchu deserves respect and protection from visitors and tourism operators, who are obliged to comply with the provisions contained in the regulations for visiting the Inca city of Machu Picchu,”  they said in a statement. </p> <p><em>Image: TikTok</em></p> <p> </p>

"Ridiculous and disrespectful": Groom goes viral for working on wedding day

<p>A wedding photo has gone viral for the wrong reasons after a groom was pictured working on his own wedding day. </p> <p>Torrey Leonard, the founder of US-based start-up company, Thoughtly, shared a photo of his co-founder, Casey Mackrell, pulling out a laptop at his own wedding to get some work done.</p> <p>“My co-founder Casey has built a reputation for himself as ‘the guy who sits on his laptop in bars’ from SF to NYC,”  he wrote in the post. </p> <p>“Last week Thoughtly brought on a customer that needed to launch within 2 weeks. He just so happened to be getting married within that 2 week window.</p> <p>“So, here he is wrapping up a pull request. At his own wedding. Congrats Casey – now please, go take some time off.”</p> <p>Hundreds of people were quick to comment on the post, labelling it “one of the most depressing LinkedIn posts to exist” and it was even shared to other social media pages. </p> <p>The groom himself eventually had to clarify saying:  “Don’t worry I got back to dancing and champagne 2 seconds later.” </p> <p>But that wasn't enough to appease fellow LinkedIn users. </p> <p>“So your company has such terrible work/life balance that you can’t have a WEDDING without having to work? That’s just sad as hell," one wrote. </p> <p>Another commenter quipped that it was "really sad" the groom didn't call off the wedding to focus on work, saying: “Someone who actually knows how to grind would have called it off the second the contract was signed." </p> <p>A few others questioned the authenticity of the post, saying that it had to be staged as they couldn’t believe that someone would be “that ridiculous and disrespectful to his bride and family”.</p> <p>“Aside from the fact that this is probably staged, pushing people to sacrifice their private life and mental health is not the flex you think it is," another added. </p> <p>In an interview with <em>news.com.au</em> Leonard defended his co-founder's decision and explained the situation. </p> <p>“As a company, what we do is very high-stakes. Every single one of our customers, they depend on us to function perfectly, 24-7, around the clock, no questions asked,”  he told the publication. </p> <p>“We work with many publicly traded companies across the globe, and we spend long hours of the night, early mornings awake, monitoring these calls, proactively fixing issues, fixing problems, building new features.</p> <p>“The context of this post, he had to solve a problem, and it was really only something that he could solve. It was a three- to five-minute task.</p> <p>“We understand that this lifestyle is not for everybody. It’s obviously something that is a lot of work, but it’s something that we love.”</p> <p>He also clarified that Mackrell's bride, Grace, did not have a problem with the brief interruption on their happy day. </p> <p>“They were dating for many years, so she’s seen him pull a laptop out at a restaurant dinner table. “How is this funny?”: Tourist slammed over “disrespectful” act at Graceland

<p dir="ltr">An arrogant traveller has been slammed online after blatantly disregarding signage at Graceland, and taking a dip in the pool. </p> <p dir="ltr">A woman posted a video from the late Elvis Presley’s iconic property in Memphis, Tennessee, as she travelled to the area with her husband.</p> <p dir="ltr">Capturing the moment and sharing it online as a joke, a video posted to the woman’s TikTok account shows her husband, dressed in shorts, shoes and socks climbing over a pool fence, marked 'RESTRICTED AREA'.</p> <p dir="ltr">The man is then seen walking towards the diving board as a security guard rushes towards him.</p> <p dir="ltr">After wobbling a bit on the diving board, he jumps into the water before the guard can stop him.</p> <p dir="ltr">The woman captured the video, "My husband jumped into Elvis pool", adding a laughing emoji.</p> <p dir="ltr">Despite the couple’s jovial nature over the stunt, many people were quick to condemn the tourists and their video, which has been viewed over 14 million times. </p> <p dir="ltr">"How is this funny? People are so disrespectful and I hope he got arrested," one person commented.</p> <p dir="ltr">"As someone who has solid respect for Elvis Presley this is very disrespectful to him and his family," another agreed.</p> <p dir="ltr">"Travellers doing whatever they want as usual. Shame," another person commented.</p> <p dir="ltr">Despite the overwhelming condemnation, there were some who defended the man’s actions, with one person writing, "I think Elvis would have done the same thing lol."</p> <p dir="ltr">The woman also responded to the accusations that her husband's actions were disrespectful in another video, saying, "Elvis caught someone jumping into his pool once and he never stopped them. He never got them arrested. Told them to stay in the pool. That's what a pool is meant for is to jump into."</p> <p dir="ltr">One person quickly responded, "Whether people think 'Elvis would be laughing' or not it's all down to respect. "Willfully clueless": Tourists slammed for disrespectful Auschwitz selfies

<p>In a move that has been slammed as disgusting and disrespectful, a tourist has used her time visiting Auschwitz as an opportunity to pad out her social media feeds. </p> <p>In a picture shared by GB News producer Maria Murphy, a man and a woman can be seen on the railway tracks outside of the main Auschwitz structure. He is crouched with a camera angled towards her, while she is posing on the tracks, hand in her hair with her face turned to the sky. </p> <p>“Today I had one of the most harrowing experiences of my life,” Maria wrote on Twitter alongside the image. “Regrettably it didn’t seem [like] everyone there found it quite so poignant.”</p> <p>She went on to explain that the tour had been going for a couple of hours by that point, so the tourists had no excuse for their ignorance and disrespect - especially as they were all “asked repeatedly to be mindful and respectful.” </p> <p>And as Maria pointed out, “you would think this sort of thing wouldn’t need to be specified as a no-go for that criteria.”</p> <blockquote class="twitter-tweet"> <p dir="ltr" lang="en">Today I had one of the most harrowing experiences of my life. Total disregard,” wrote one.</p> <p>“I visited in 2005 and every single person in my tour group had cried over the course of the tour,” one shared. </p> <p>“Absolutely disgusting,” another declared. “When I went, people were taking selfies. So disrespectful.” </p> <p>“Some people are really just willfully clueless and beyond ignorant,” came one hard truth.</p> <p>And when one tried to suggest that everyone shouldn’t be so quick to judge, that they weren’t sure “we should police people’s facial expressions in reaction to almost incomprehensible experiences”, the rest were quick to disagree.</p> <p>“This woman is posing on a railroad track that brought hundreds of thousands to their murders,” someone responded, to over 23,000 likes. “There is no nuance here.”</p> <p>Another simply wanted to point out that “@AuschwitzMuseum asks people not to do this. It's so horrifying that it continues to happen.”</p> <p>But the Auschwitz Museum’s official Twitter account perhaps put it best when they said, “Pictures can hold immense emotional &amp; documentation value for visitors. Shane Warne’s daughter blasts Channel Nine for “disrespect”

<p dir="ltr">Shane Warne’s daughter has blasted Channel Nine for their disrespectful advertising of a telemovie just six months after the cricketer’s death.</p> <p dir="ltr">Brooke Warne slammed Channel Nine's announcement of a telemovie about her father as “disrespectful” after his dedication and support for the network.</p> <p dir="ltr">On September 14, she took to Instagram calling them out writing: “Do any of you have any respect for Dad? Or his family? Aquaman in hot water after disrespecting artworks

<p dir="ltr">Jason Mamoa has landed himself in hot water after taking photos inside Apostolic Palace.</p> <p dir="ltr">The <em>Aquaman</em> star shared several photographs of himself and others inside the Palace on Instagram with the caption: I LOVE YOU ITALY what a beautiful start to our day off enjoying ROMA.</p> <p dir="ltr">The 42-year-old however was called out by fans who claimed he was given special treatment by being allowed to take photos.</p> <p dir="ltr">Photographs are banned inside the Apostolic Palace because the flash from cameras can harm and destroy the beautiful artworks. </p> <p dir="ltr">“Omg of course they let you take pictures (I thought it wasn’t allowed for preservation purposes),” someone commented.</p> <p dir="ltr">“You cannot touch any of our masterpieces!!!” another exclaimed.</p> <p dir="ltr">“We, regular people, are not allowed to film inside the Sistine Chapel,” another added.</p> <p dir="ltr">“We can’t take pics but ofc  celebrities can. <p>The fallout from “the slap” at this year’s Oscars continues. Last week, Will Smith <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/will-smith-resigns-from-the-academy-slapped-chris-rock-at-oscars/">resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences</a>, after the academy issued a statement <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/will-smith-chris-rock-slap-oscars-academy-formal-review/">condemning</a> Smith’s actions.</p> <p>There have been innumerable media stories about “the slap,” including <a href="https://theconversation.com/will-smiths-oscar-slap-reveals-fault-lines-as-he-defends-jada-pinkett-smith-against-chris-rock-podcast-180280">an episode of <em>Don’t Call Me Resilient</em></a>. “The joke,” however, has received less attention. <a href="https://www.capitalfm.com/news/chris-rock-will-smith-jada-pinkett-slap-oscars-gi-jane-joke/">“Jada, I love you. G.I. Jane 2 can’t wait to see you</a>,” is what Rock said to Jada Pinkett Smith and the Oscar night audience before Smith got up and slapped him.</p> <p><a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119173/"><em>G.I. Jane</em></a> is a 1997 fictional drama starring Demi Moore about the first woman to undergo training in the United States Navy Seals. Moore’s “feminine” character, Jane O'Neil, is <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/style/longterm/movies/review97/fgijane.htm">chosen</a> by a female politician attempting to make a point in her battle against the <a href="https://blogs.lse.ac.uk/gender/2021/04/22/the-hidden-masculinization-and-militarization-of-the-canadian-citizenship-guide/">inherent sexism in the military</a>. To “keep hanging,” O'Neil “divests herself of any trace of femininity” and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LU_mJDOB7ZM">shaves her head</a>.</p> <p>Although a shaven head for a woman should not signify anything but a <a href="https://www.etalk.ca/celebrity/celebrities-who-shaved-their-heads-and-looked-absolutely-amazing.html">style choice</a>, Pinkett Smith’s shaven head is also due to alopecia. We Black women have learned to love our hair, despite a wider culture that has, historically, not accepted its diversity.</p> <p>In fact, Black women have been fighting the court system for 40 years to get protection from hair discrimination.</p> <p><strong>Alopecia disproportionately affects Black women</strong></p> <p>In my 2019 book, <a href="https://www.wlupress.wlu.ca/Books/B/Beauty-in-a-Box2"><em>Beauty in a Box</em></a> I examined the <a href="https://doi.org/10.1001/jamadermatol.2017.5163">dermatological research on hair loss</a>. Two U.S. studies, from 2009 and 2017, found that <a href="https://dermnetnz.org/topics/central-centrifugal-cicatricial-alopecia">central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia</a> (CCCA) is often underdiagnosed; some estimates report that 17 per cent of Black women have this condition.</p> <p>Some of the reasons why Black women are more adversely affected by CCCA are due to tight braiding hairstyles, long-term use of hair weaves, lace-front wigs and chemical relaxers.</p> <p>While Rock might not have known of Pinkett Smith’s alopecia, in his 2009 documentary <a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1213585/"><em>Good Hair</em></a> he spoke to Black women about their hair, especially about <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vCEX34-1o6M">chemical relaxers</a>.</p> <p><em>Good Hair</em> was a successful film for Rock, but that does not mean he grew from the project.</p> <p><strong>Black hair discrimination and the CROWN Act</strong></p> <p><em>Glamour</em>’s <a href="https://www.glamour.com/story/the-crown-act-september-2020-cover-story">September 2020 cover story</a> was dedicated to six Black women who endured discrimination at work because of their hair. The feature explained how curly, “kinky” or big hair carries meaning for Black women.</p> <p>For example, a <a href="https://www.ellecanada.com/beauty/hair/how-to-style-a-messy-topknot-so-it-looks-chic-not-just-out-of-bed">messy topknot is considered chic</a> on a white woman, while a Black woman with natural hair such as large Afro or locs would be considered unkempt and has <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2513893/Florida-girl-threatened-expulsion-afro-hair.html">led to workplace reprimand</a>.</p> <p>On March 18, 2022, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the <a href="https://www.npr.org/2022/03/18/1087661765/house-votes-crown-act-discrimination-hair-style">CROWN Act</a>, banning hair discrimination at private places of work, federal programs and public accommodations. CROWN stands for <a href="https://www.congress.gov/bill/117th-congress/house-bill/2116">Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair</a>.</p> <p><a href="https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5edc69fd622c36173f56651f/t/5edeaa2fe5ddef345e087361/1591650865168/Dove_research_brochure2020_FINAL3.pdf">A 2019 Dove study</a> found that Black women were 80 per cent more likely to feel pressure to change their hairstyles to fit in at the office. Black women were also 83 per cent more likely to report being judged on her looks than other women.</p> <figure><iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/3VPvBmkIA-g?wmode=transparent&amp;start=0" width="440" height="260" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen"></iframe><figcaption><span class="caption">‘Subjects of Desire’ by Jennifer Holeness delves into issues of race, power and beauty.</span></figcaption></figure> <p>The CROWN Act is not yet an official law. Despite <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/house/598757-house-passes-crown-act-banning-race-based-hair-discrimination/">President Joe Biden expressing strong support for the bill</a>, there may not be enough votes to pass it.</p> <p><strong>Rogers vs. American Airlines</strong></p> <p>In 1981, American Airlines fired ticket agent Renee Rogers for wearing cornrows. She <a href="https://scholar.google.ca/scholar_case?case=6092364812619612919&amp;q=Rogers+v.+American+Airlines&amp;hl=en&amp;as_sdt=2006&amp;as_vis=1">filed a discrimination suit</a> challenging the airline’s policy prohibiting employees from wearing an all-braided hairstyle, claiming that such a policy violated the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and discriminated against her as a woman, and also as a Black person.</p> <p>Legal scholar <a href="https://doi.org/10.2307/1372731">Paulette Cladwell</a> explained how and why the U.S. Federal District Court of New York rejected Rogers’s claim that the style evoked her African heritage.</p> <p>The court said her hairstyle was a result of having seen the <a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078721/">1979 film <em>10</em></a>, starring <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=au0Pp_9oQbo">Bo Derek who makes an appearance wearing long braids</a> with beads at the ends. It became known as the “<a href="https://law.fiu.edu/2019/10/11/the-unnatural-treatment-of-natural-hair-courts-failure-to-recognize-hairstyle-discrimination-as-race-discrimination-the-need-for-state-legislature-action/">Bo Derek defence</a>.” <em>Rogers vs. American Airlines</em> was a landmark case because it set a precedent that sanctioned the firing of Black women on the basis of their hair.</p> <p>In 2016, the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled against a lawsuit filed by the <a href="https://www.vox.com/2018/4/18/17242788/chastity-jones-dreadlock-job-discrimination">Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) against Catastrophe Management Solutions (CMS) for firing Chastity Jones, a Black woman</a>, because she wore her hair in locs. The lawsuit shared much in common with <em>Rogers vs. American Airlines</em>. Scott Applewhite)</span></figcaption></figure> <p>Hair has also come up in discussions on <a href="https://www.oprahdaily.com/entertainment/a39520244/judge-ketanji-brown-jacksons-locs/">Ketanji Brown Jackson’s Supreme Court confirmation hearings</a> because the legal profession has often discouraged natural hairdos. In 2007, an editor from <em>Glamour</em> in a “do’s and don'ts” fashion event at a New York law firm <a href="https://www.law.com/nationallawjournal/almID/1188161099761/?slreturn=20220304144452">called locs “truly dreadful.”</a></p> <p><strong>Why Black hair jokes aren’t funny</strong></p> <p>When Black women are in legal and cultural battles for the right to wear their hair as they choose, jokes about our hair just aren’t funny. The <a href="https://www.npr.org/sections/codeswitch/2019/02/06/685506578/is-beauty-in-the-eyes-of-the-colonizer">straight hair standard of beauty has been called toxic</a> not only to Black women but women in general for the ways it valorizes white, western beauty ideals.</p> <p>One may argue that public figures should be open to criticism. For example, United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson often shows up with his hair in disarray <a href="https://www.politico.eu/article/how-boris-johnsons-hair-defined-britain/">which gets poked fun at by media</a>. Kyrgios fires back at critics who accused him of disrespecting Ash Barty

<p dir="ltr" style="margin: 0px 0px 5px;padding: 0px;border: 0px;font-size: 16px;vertical-align: baseline;color: #323338;font-family: Roboto, Arial;background-color: #ffffff">Nick Kyrgios has hit back at critics who have accused him of disrespecting women’s singles champion Ash Barty in an Instagram post.</p><p dir="ltr" style="margin: 0px 0px 5px;padding: 0px;border: 0px;font-size: 16px;vertical-align: baseline;color: #323338;font-family: Roboto, Arial;background-color: #ffffff">The 26-year-old faced a backlash on Sunday after comments made following his win on Saturday night. After the men’s doubles final that saw Kyrgios take out the title with fellow Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis, Kyrgios told reporters, “I would say that we’ve created probably the best atmosphere this tournament has ever seen. Ash (Barty’s) father came to us and said the crowd was the best he’s ever seen. Obviously Ash is a hell of a player, but I think the ratings speak for themselves.</p><p dir="ltr" style="margin: 0px 0px 5px;padding: 0px;border: 0px;font-size: 16px;vertical-align: baseline;color: #323338;font-family: Roboto, Arial;background-color: #ffffff">“People watch my matches, everywhere I play around the world the stadiums are full for that reason. So I don’t think those people that are screaming out before points, that’s got nothing to do with us. But there’s a reason why the ratings are the way they are and people are glued to the TV when we play. It speaks for itself really.”</p><p dir="ltr" style="margin: 0px 0px 5px;padding: 0px;border: 0px;font-size: 16px;vertical-align: baseline;color: #323338;font-family: Roboto, Arial;background-color: #ffffff">The backlash from tennis commentators was swift and scathing, with English commentator Catherine Whitaker saying during an appearance on ABC’s<em style="margin: 0px;padding: 0px;border: 0px;vertical-align: baseline"> Offsiders, </em>“My jaw dropped when I read those quotes and I thought it might have been one of those where the quote is written down and it looks a bit worse than when you see the clip, sometimes that can be the case with press conferences.</p><p dir="ltr" style="margin: 0px 0px 5px;padding: 0px;border: 0px;font-size: 16px;vertical-align: baseline;color: #323338;font-family: Roboto, Arial;background-color: #ffffff">“But it’s not the case in this instance. I mean, on a night that was about Ash Barty, without question, to say that, it is pretty extraordinary.” <em style="margin: 0px;padding: 0px;border: 0px;vertical-align: baseline">Offsiders </em>host Kelly Underwood said it was “extremely disrespectful” and told Kyrgios to read the room.</p><p dir="ltr" style="margin: 0px 0px 5px;padding: 0px;border: 0px;font-size: 16px;vertical-align: baseline;color: #323338;font-family: Roboto, Arial;background-color: #ffffff">Both Barty and Kyrgios’ matches on Saturday night smashed records, with Barty’s attracting 4.2 million viewers, the most watched women’s final since the current records system was introduced in 1999. Meanwhile, the men’s doubles final attracted 3.1 million viewers, despite its later time slot.</p><p dir="ltr" style="margin: 0px 0px 5px;padding: 0px;border: 0px;font-size: 16px;vertical-align: baseline;color: #323338;font-family: Roboto, Arial;background-color: #ffffff">In response to the criticism, Kyrgios wrote on Instagram, “F** you media. Honestly, I said nothing disrespectful to @ashbarty. I said that the crowd this year was amazing and I feel as if @the-kokk1 &amp; I were a big part of that.</p><p dir="ltr" style="margin: 0px 0px 5px;padding: 0px;border: 0px;font-size: 16px;vertical-align: baseline;color: #323338;font-family: Roboto, Arial;background-color: #ffffff">“Ash’s father came to me and even said that. All I said was that when people watch me around the world the stadiums are full. Purcell had earlier accused Kyrgios and Kokkinakis of being “disrespectful” to their opponents and agreed with calls for Kyrgios to be disqualified for hitting a ball into the crowd. “Profoundly disrespectful”: Shock as George Pell supporters are told to write him a Christmas card

<p>British Deacon Nick Donnelly has asked supporters of convicted paedophile Cardinal George Pell to send him Christmas cards in jail.</p> <p>He asked his followers on Twitter to send Pell letters to his prison cell.</p> <blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"> <p dir="ltr">Please show your support for Cardinal Pell by sending him a Christmas card<br /><br />Here's his address<br /><br />DO NOT address his envelope as 'Cardinal Pell' or it will be refused <a href="https://t.co/jsKxvBNofb">pic.twitter.com/jsKxvBNofb</a></p> — Nick Donnelly (@ProtecttheFaith) <a href="https://twitter.com/ProtecttheFaith/status/1201385480178282496?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">December 2, 2019</a></blockquote> <p>"Please show your support for Cardinal Pell by sending him a Christmas card," he wrote alongside a screenshot of an address.</p> <p>Donnelly also says that anyone who sends a letter should “NOT address his envelope as ‘Cardinal Pell’ or it will be refused”.</p> <p>Donnelly also said that gifts of $15 would be accepted.</p> <p>The message has drawn criticism from other Twitter users who labelled the move "profoundly disrespectful.</p> <p>It also drew criticism from Melbourne-based victim support group In Good Faith Foundation.</p> <p>Chief Executive Officer Clare Leaney said to<span> </span><em><a rel="noopener" href="https://7news.com.au/news/religion-and-belief/george-pell-supporters-told-to-write-christmas-cards-to-convicted-paedophile-c-587870" target="_blank">7News.com.au</a></em><span> </span>that she hopes no victims of sexual abuse saw the Tweet.</p> <p>"For a lot of survivors of abuse, there is no holiday period," she said.</p> <p>"That's been taken away from them.</p> <p>"These are people that have lost their faith and their connection to the church and I think the festive season reinforces the isolation some people can have."</p> <p>Pell is currently preparing to spend his first Christmas period behind bars after being jailed for six years with a non-parole period of three years and eight months.</p> <p>However, he is waiting to appeal his conviction in the High Court, which is expected to happen sometime next year.</p> <p>Leaney says that the constant rehashing of the case could be stressful for victims.</p> <p>"I think that for everyone, the impact of childhood abuse and particularly in a religious context, it’s unquantifiable," she said.</p> <p>"For all our clients, they identify it as the worst moment of their lives."</p>

I am sick of feeling old and disrespected

<p><em><strong>Ruthanne Koyama retired at the age of 70 after 40 years in Service Chain Management. Not one to sit idle as the world went by she decided to write and share her somewhat quirky, but positive attitude on life and how to live the best of what is left of it.</strong></em></p> <p><img width="150" height="150" src="https://oversixtydev.blob.core.windows.net/media/24945/ruthanne.jpg" alt="Ruthanne" style="float: left;"/>I may be “archaic” but I’m not dead yet and neither are a lot of my friends of the same era. The problem is much of society seems to disagree with that. If you did a search on “ageing” you will find that the first page of Google brings back mostly government sites, institutions and public health sites. Try seniors and you get silly things like senior dating, senior housing and again health care facilities or nursing sites.</p> <p>Great, good information for those people looking out for seniors, but what about us seniors ourselves. Outside of the dating site, which for most of my friends is not on the top of their needs list, there is little else that addresses us as people or even human beings.</p> <p>What the heck is going on? I may be pushing 70, but I am not infirm, nor have I lost my faculties.</p> <p>A concept that is often challenged by young people.</p> <p>I was discussing a topic the other day with a young man who was saying he had experience in this, and in that and had done this and that. So I asked him how he could possibly have done and gained experience in some many things.</p> <p>His response to me was: “You are out of touch with the world, your depth of experience (40 years) in this one area means nothing in the workplace today. The only thing that matters now is breadth of experience and you have none of that.”</p> <p>The young man was 37 years old.</p> <p>I was astounded and speechless. Not only because I found his comments demeaning but totally disrespectful. But, heh, maybe I’m just too old and take offence to easily. Again his comment.</p> <p>But insolent young people aside, where are we as seniors? Are we truly nonentities?</p> <p>I recall a saying I saw in some craft store one day which read:</p> <p>▪ At 30 you are invincible</p> <p>▪ At 40 you become insignificant</p> <p>▪ At 50 you are invisible</p> <p>▪ After 60 you cease to exist</p> <p>This of course, was referring to women, but I’d guess there is something similar for men somewhere and now on the internet, not some little craft store. Being on the net somehow makes it official.</p> <p>So my question is why aren’t we “the senior crowd” sticking up for ourselves. We taught our kids about it and I guess we are teaching grandchildren, but what about US?</p> <p>The news abounds with bullying being the number one issues kids face today. But those kids are not alone.</p> <p>Seniors face bullying on an unprecedented scale from millennials and gen X-ers.</p> <p>As seniors, we face a barrage of name calling, discounting and rude behaviour, albeit not from our peers, but from the demographic that will someday be in control of our world, the environment and us.</p> <p>No, I am not crying for a call to arms. Wouldn’t that look just too funny, a band of seniors with some single shot rifles from the Second World War, marching on who? Our kids, our former bosses, our doctors?</p> <p>All I’m saying is for us to start sticking up for ourselves. Doesn’t matter if you are 50 to 90! Heck, we all need to forget that demographic and start to think and act like we have the best rest of our lives left to live.</p> <p>Do you agree with Ruthanne?
