“Greedy” woman slammed after being “disappointed” with engagement ring

A woman has been dubbed “ungrateful” and “greedy” online after sharing a lengthy post about how she was “pretty disappointed” with the ring her boyfriend proposed with.

The bride-to-be took to Facebook to say that while she still loves her fiancé, she was upset at being given a lab-made diamond as opposed to a natural one.

“I'm not going to lie, I was pretty disappointed, especially since my future husband has enough income to afford a real diamond,” she said in the lengthy post.

She also confessed to feeling like “a spoiled brat for complaining”, but went on to compare how her fiancé was previously engaged to another woman and proposed with a ring costing more than $75,000, so the cheaper diamond left her feeling “second best”.

The woman’s post was met with ridicule online, as thousands of people commented on her post to express their disbelief.

One person quipped, “I require my diamonds to be exploitative.”

“People sure do get upset when their diamonds aren't the result of human rights abuses and environmental destruction, huh,” another said, slamming the woman's “entitled attitude”.

Another woman was quick to agree that the bride-to-be's “greedy” disappointment was in bad taste.

“Carbon is carbon,” another person said, referring to the material that diamonds are made of, whether from the ground or in a lab.

“Such a weird hill to die on! I told my husband I wanted a lab created diamond for this exact reason: because diamond mining claims lives! Having a chemically perfect diamond is a bonus,” another woman said.

Woman shares fury after unknowingly paying for her engagement ring

A new wife has shared her fury after she discovered her husband had been paying off her engagement ring from their joint bank account.

The 28-year-old woman was overjoyed when her partner proposed to her with an $8,000 two-carat lab diamond ring, which he bought on a payment plan because he “didn’t have the funds available” when he bought it.

The couple got married just three months later at the courthouse after they realised they could not afford a big, fancy wedding.

After their big day, the new wife was shocked and annoyed when she discovered she had “unintentionally partially paid for two instalments”, which now makes her a “part owner of the ring”.

“I found out after we married and merged our finances that he has been withdrawing funds from our joint account — we make roughly the same — to finance this ring,” the furious woman shared in a Reddit thread.

“We have been having some arguments lately and he feels that the ring is a wedding expense and it’s only fair that I contribute towards it too, and that as a woman of this day I shouldn’t hesitate to be an equal partner.”

She took particular issue with her husband for making her pay her share on what was supposed to be a gift from him.

“I was just taken aback and honestly put off by the fact he is making me pay for a gift he gave to me. You don’t make the recipient of a gift pay for the damn gift,” she said.

The woman said if she had known her husband was going to make her pay for the ring, she wouldn’t have agreed to “buy it”.

“Mutual consent is essential when a couple is deciding to invest in an asset. Owning a house or a car jointly requires two ‘yeses’ and I wouldn’t certainly have said yes to jointly owning a ring he was supposed to give to me as a gift,” she explained.

Although the woman admitted that she had asked her partner for a “nice” ring before he proposed, saying that she “deserved a quality piece symbolising our love”, she said she wished her partner talked to her about the big expense before signing her up for payments.

“My then-fiancé knew about the expectation I had of him and was upfront about things from the get go,” she explained.

“He could’ve discussed things with me and we could’ve seen if we were truly compatible like that. What I didn’t know was that he was plotting to ‘get even’ with me by taking out a payment plan and using our funds to finance it.”

“I don’t mind splurging for him, but this whole situation has left a very bad taste in my mouth.”

Now she’s demanding her husband return her engagement ring to the jewellery store because she refuses to pay for it.

The Reddit post has racked up thousands of comments, with some people jumping to the woman’s defence.

One person wrote, “I’d be livid if I found out I was diamond poor instead of house poor.”

However, not everyone thought the wife’s actions were justified, with one person writing, “You’re married, there is no ‘my money’ and ‘his money’. Money he spends towards the debt for the ring is money that can’t be spent on other things for your lives together. You wanted an expensive ring, they aren’t free”.

Bride-to-be defends the proposal that divided the internet

When Erica Murphy posted her engagement announcement to social media, she could never have anticipated the response she’d find online, or the wave of vocal criticism over her fiance’s ‘simpler’ approach to the whole affair.

Erica had been preparing for a day at work when then-boyfriend Monta Homes proposed - through an all-important question scrawled on a torn sheet of lined paper.

The handwritten question had been left on the bathroom counter, alongside a dazzling ring and a lit candle, for Erica to find. She, of course, said yes, and immediately took to social media to share the couples’ happy news.

“So it’s been an amazing year with my guy,” she wrote on Twitter. “This morning before I left for work he left this in the bathroom for me to find. I said YES!”

So it’s been an amazing year with my guy. This morning before I left for work he left this in the bathroom for me to find. I said YES! #FutureMrsHomes pic.twitter.com/Yf5EijKrFz

— Erica Murphy (@EricaMurphyTV) May 1, 2023

Many rushed to offer their congratulations, gushing over the love between the two, and Erica’s obvious excitement. However, there were hundreds of critics who stopped by too, all too eager to offer their take on what they considered to be an “underwhelming” proposal from Monta.

“Umm…a note? Torn out like that?” one user replied.

“Congratulations that's thrilling I don't think anybody's going to accuse your man of being romantic though LOL,” said one, who seemed to be on the fence about it all.

“A text message basically as a marriage proposal? Not for me,” shared another.

Thankfully, there were those who were more than happy to rise to Monta’s defence, noting that proposals are - at the end of the day - all about the thought and the love behind them, not the spectacle.

“That needs to be framed and hung on a wall. Simplicity can be romantic!” one user wrote.

“I think this is awesome! There is no wrong way to propose. Humans know they’re human. It’s about the soul and the love! Congratulations!” another said.

“Sweet. Sincere. Genuine. Simple. Old Fashion. I love it. I would cherish that paper and have it framed! Congratulations! I wish you and The Mr. the very best!” one said.

And as one more put it, “I think this is brilliant and different and truly believe this relationship will last longer than any grand proposal”.

The negative take was disappointing for Erica, who admitted to Today that the attention was “one thing when you see someone else go viral and, you know, clicking and laughing and all that kind of stuff. But it's a totally different feeling when it's you”.

She took the time to “set the record straight” though, sharing that Monta’s approach had not simply been an after-thought, but instead a very touching gesture that had meant a lot to her.

"I had a really rough day the day before,” Erica, who is a journalist, shared. “I've never seen so many Confederate flags in my life. I was just, like, really exhausted.

"He had flown in the night before, and he was laying there with his boxers looking so comfortable, and I've just been in the battlefield.

"I was just so irritated. It was a carryover irritation from before.”

Monta told the publication that he had known Erica would be heading into the bathroom after him that morning, and had opted for his handwritten approach as "this is the type of person I am. I wanted to catch her when she least expected it.

"I know other people wanted me to get the blimp with 'the world is yours' and all that other stuff. But that's just, I mean, I could have done that. But I like this better.”

And it seems that Erica agreed, with the happy bride-to-be informing Today - and critics all over - that “it was very sweet. I mean, this morning, for instance, I woke up because I still have this piece of paper that everyone's talking so badly about.

“I woke up, he's back in Detroit, and I looked at this piece of paper, and I just smiled and said, 'Monta, you're so adorable', because I think it was really heartfelt.”

Images: Twitter

One person’s cringe is another’s dream Spongebob proposal

Sometimes it’s best to keep your opinions to yourself, especially when it comes to the one of the most important days of your friend’s life, as one woman has learned the hard way.

After witnessing her best friend’s “super cringey and uncomfortable” proposal, she was left with some feedback. Some feedback she felt compelled to share, though her friend - unsurprisingly - was not too thrilled with what she heard.

Taking to Reddit’s ‘Am I the A***ole’ (commonly known as AITA), the woman asked other users for their take, wanting to find out if she really was in the wrong, as she just didn’t [get why she’s [her friend] so upset.”

“My friend invited a group of us over for her birthday last night. During dinner, her bf leaves the room and comes back playing the harmonica,” she began, before explaining how it had seemed a little odd to her, but that she’d just assumed he was “showing off or something.”

That was when things took a turn for the bizarre, with the groom-to-be switching out the harmonica to instead serenade his would-be fiancée with Spongebob’s ‘Gary Come Home’. She noted that he wasn’t a particularly good singer, and that everyone in the room appeared to have the same idea about how cringe-inducing the whole thing was.

“After he finishes singing,” the woman continued, “he goes over to my friend [and] gets down on one knee and proposes. She said yes and we all congratulated her but the rest of dinner I was having severe second hand embarrassment.”

These thoughts got the better of her in the end, and she went on to explain how she’d approached her friend while the two were cleaning up, and asked what she’d thought of the proposal, adding “I told her it was weird especially since she’s never watched/liked Spongebob. They haven’t really talked about marriage before so she was completely surprised and I told her that makes it even weirder.”

Her friend was offended, and made the accusation that the original poster just wasn’t “happy for her”.

“I pointed out [that] she seemed embarrassed too during his charade,” she said. It was then revealed that the two hadn’t spoken for the remainder of their evening, and that she still couldn’t understand why her friend had gotten upset, as “a proposal should be romantic, not whatever the f*** that was.”

And of her question as to whether or not she was the bad guy in the situation, her fellow Redditors had plenty to say.

“Are you the proposal police?” one asked. “It doesn’t matter what anyone thinks of the proposal but your friend! When she asked you for your opinion all you had to do was say, ‘as long as you are happy I’m happy for you’ instead you went on a long tirade about how weird it was.”

“What you feel is romantic could well be someone else’s version of horrific. It wasn’t your place to feel second hand embarrassment. It wasn’t your place to tell your friend it was weird,” another chastised. “If she was happy, you should have been happy for her, but instead you’ve made her upset. There was no need for you to do that.”

One was of the mind that while yes, she had been out of line with her sharing her opinion, “that proposal was weird and the fiancé forced people to be a part of it with no heads up? It’s cool if they’re both into bad harmonica music and SpongeBob but keep the proposal private. Or let people know what they’re in for.

“OP [original poster] deserves a trophy for not laughing during. The friend clearly knew it was weird, but asked anyway. OP should have bit her tongue and had this conversation later, but proposing before ever talking about marriage is also strange. Real friends can be honest with each other, but some more tact was needed.”

Images: Getty

"An arts engagement that’s changed their life": the magic of arts and health

In 2007, a life-changing encounter at South Australia’s Flinders Medical Centre became the catalyst and symbol for a national arts and health movement.

A young woman, Becky Corlett, was being transported through the hospital where an artist-in-residence, Rebecca Cambrell, was painting a mural. Becky had suffered a stroke and cardiac failure. She had stopped eating and was non-responsive even to family. When Becky passed the mural, however, she made a noise of interest.

Cambrell instinctively drew Becky closer and gave her a paint brush. To everyone’s surprise, Becky started adding dabs of paint to the canvas, and then she smiled. The wonder of this moment only dawned on Cambrell when she turned around.

“Her parents were convinced that the moment she touched that paintbrush, something was triggered inside Becky that made her want to live”, remembers Cambrell.

Becky’s story is just one of many collected in our new report Telling the Story of Arts in Health in South Australia.

What is ‘arts and health’?

Arts and health is broadly defined as using arts practice to deliver health outcomes, be they specifically targeted interventions or general wellbeing benefits.

Arts and health work comes in many forms. It can be play about mental health issues in rural areas. It can be a university competition to design solutions to community wellbeing challenges. It can be the integration of art throughout an entire hospital to create a calming environment.

In an interview with us, design researcher Jane Andrew said the breadth of arts and health work means participant involvement can range “from passively viewing to making to being in the environment”.

The benefits are diverse. A 2019 World Health Organisation study looking at over 900 peer-reviewed publications found arts and health can do everything from encouraging health-promoting behaviours to supporting end-of-life care.

The diversity of the arts and health field is represented by the perspectives of our report’s 47 interviewees. We spoke to arts therapists, managers of hospital-based arts and health programs, government arts agency staff, CEOs of local health networks and former ministers. We asked them about their past experiences with arts and health, the present challenges and opportunities for the field, and how best to advance this work in the future.

Art and health in Australia

Although benefits of the arts to health have been recognised for millennia, the formal field of arts and health work first emerged across South Australia and the rest of the nation through the community arts movement of the 1970s and the rise of health promotion in the 1980s.

The establishment of the Flinders Medical Centre’s Arts in Health program in the late 1990s provided a major step for the field into health settings, and the program remains an innovative leader today.

The former director of the program, Sally Francis, recalled how, “on a regular basis” the program would have “three, four, five stories of someone who has been critically ill and had an arts engagement that’s changed their life.”

But Becky Corlett’s story had, as Francis describes it, a “huge and far-reaching effect” on arts and health in Australia. Days after Becky’s first painting experience, former South Australian Minister of Health and Assistant Arts Minister, John Hill, visited the hospital "I was just walking along, and I saw the painting going on and there was this little girl busily doing art. […] Her parents came up to me and had tears in their eyes. […] She was reconnected with life."

Inspired by this encounter, Hill and Francis led a push to have arts and health formally recognised by the state and then federal government. The National Arts and Health Framework was officially endorsed in 2014.

This historic statement declared the Australian federal, state and territory governments’ recognition of and support for the field. The framework aimed to raise awareness of arts and health, and to encourage government departments and agencies across the country to integrate arts and health work into their services.

However, it did not make any funding or legislative requests, meaning no permanent arts and health policy followed its endorsement.

What next for arts and health?

Next year marks ten years since the framework’s endorsement.

While there is continuing good work in this space across the country, our interviewees believe arts and health remains underutilised. Community artist Lisa Philip-Harbutt told us there is a lack of “connection between all the various things that people are doing” – different arts and health projects often aren’t speaking to each other.

To regain momentum for the field, interviewees recommend developing educational pathways for prospective arts and health workers, conducting a review and update of the National Arts and Health Framework to embed it in policy, and establishing research partnerships between universities and arts and health programs.

The hope is that the next generation of leaders will be inspired by witnessing arts and health’s life-changing power.

According to Deborah Mills, a key driver of the National Arts and Health Framework, "If you want passionate advocates, they have to have a visceral understanding of what creative activity does."

This article originally appeared on The Conversation.

Schoolgirl's cheeky question for King Charles

King Charles and Camilla, Queen Consort, have attended their first joint royal engagement in their new roles.

The royals were visiting the youth organisation Project Zero in Walthamstow, where among the crowd they were greeted by a group of excited school children from Barn Croft Primary School.

The outing took a funny turn straight off the bat when the monarch was asked a cheeky question by a young schoolgirl.

Immediately seeing the humour in the spontaneous moment with the gathered school children, the 73-year-old monarch seemed happy to engage in the back-and-forth banter, much to the amusement of the crowd.

"How old are you, King Charles?" the little one asked innocently.

His Majesty replied with a laugh, saying: "You can have a guess. Have a guess."

One little kid shouted out "96", which the King took in good humour with another giggle.

Following up on an invite extended at the Platinum Jubilee Big Lunch in June, the royal couple were visiting with Project Zero. The then-Duchess of Cornwall had met Project Zero founder Stephen Barnabis and youth champion Rico Thai-Richards at their event in June and their chat featured in Camilla's Country Life documentary, which aired in July.

On Tuesday, the royal couple greeted the pair before being introduced to members of staff who deliver various programs, including digital talent, coding, music production, mental health and support services for women and girls.

I just outed our engagement.”

News of the pair's relationship originally broke in February 2021, with reports they had met on a cruise.

The couple have been living together in Perth, with Walsh telling The Daily Telegraph in August 2020 that she got “stuck” away from home during the pandemic.

“I didn’t really want to go back to New York in the middle of a pandemic when it was pretty gnarly to say the least,” she said at the time.

“I couldn’t go home initially, and now that I can, I don’t really fancy going back,” she continued. “I have my own mother saying, ‘Don’t come home,’ my 86-year-old mum. We are in a very challenging time!”

Until now, Walsh's relationship with Nixon has been kept extremely private, as they have both chosen not to post photos of each other on social media.

Image credits: Getty Images / Instagram

King Charles III honours mother in first engagement after mourning

King Charles III and Camilla, the Queen Consort, have travelled to a Scottish town with a rich royal history to honour one of Queen Elizabeth II’s final wishes.

In their first joint engagement since the end of the official mourning period, King Charles and Camilla travelled to Dunfermline, north of the Scottish capital of Edinburgh, where the monarch made an emotional tribute to his mother.

Just months before her death, the Queen personally chose to bestow city status on Dunfermline - a wish the King honoured on Monday.

During his speech at the Dunfermline City Chambers, King Charles said the historical moment would “gladden my dear mother’s heart, as it certainly gladdens mine”.

“My wife and I are immensely proud to be able to share this historic moment with you,” he said, adding that the Queen’s “deep love for Scotland was one of the foundations of her life”.

"There could be no more fitting way to mark my beloved mother's extraordinary life of service than by granting this honour to a place made famous by its own long and distinguished history, and by the indispensable role it has played in the life of our country."

Dunfermline was one of eight towns that were granted ‘city’ status by the Queen as part of her Platinum Jubilee celebrations earlier this year.

The town was chosen for its community associations and royal history, including being the burial place of Robert the Bruce and holding the title of Scotland’s capital from the 11th century until 1437.

The old silk mill in Dunfermline was also the source of silks used in the Queen’s gowns for her wedding and coronation.

For Monday’s historic events, which saw hundreds of people lining the streets to see King Charles and Camilla, the King wore a kilt made from Old Stewart Tartan.

After the formalities concluded, the ruling couple walked to Dunfermline Abbey to mark its 950th anniversary - an act the Queen engaged in 50 years ago for the abbey’s 900th anniversary.

King Charles and Camilla then ended the day in Edinburgh, hosting a reception at the Palace of Holyroodhouse to celebrate British South Asian communities.

Image: Getty Images

Treasuring the Queen's final official photo

Just days before her death, Queen Elizabeth was seen in what was her final official engagement.

The monarch met with Britain's new prime minister, Liz Truss, at a ceremony inside the green-carpeted room at Balmoral Castle in Scotland.

Due to the Queen's ongoing health issues, the appointment of the new PM broke with tradition by taking place in Scotland, rather than in Buckingham Palace.

The monarch was supported by her walking cane as she invited Truss, Her Majesty's 15th prime minister in her 70-year-reign, to form a new government.

During the Queen's final official act before her death, she looked lively and happy as she smiled for photos and shook the hand of the new prime minister.

Despite her positive demeanour, people were quick to spot the large bruise on the Queen's hand, reigniting concerns about the monarch's health.

ITV's royal editor Chris Ship said the bruising was a sign of changing times in the Queen's advancing years.

"I'm no medic but it could be some form of cannula that the Queen's had, we are guessing," Ship told Today.

"Buckingham Palace never tells us about her ongoing medical conditions. She's 96 years old. A frail lady, let's be clear. And queen of advancing age."

Just days later, Queen Elizabeth II passed away peacefully at the age of 96.

The monarch was under medical supervision due to her deteriorating health but unfortunately died at Balmoral Castle in Scotland on September 8th at 8:30pm local time (3:30am AEDT).

“The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon,” The Royal Family tweeted.

“The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”

The public was notified of her death through the traditional form of a formal message placed on an easel on the railings outside the Palace.

Bride-to-be throws fit over engagement ring

A bride-to-be has slammed her fiancé for the hideous engagement ring he proposed with despite her explaining which one she wanted.

The woman vented her frustration in a Facebook group explaining how she tried hard not to hate the ring.

She then shared two images - one of the ring she was given, and another of the $8,859 mint sapphire ring she wanted.

“I was very excited for the proposal, then this thing came out of the box,” her post read.

“First thing I said was ‘omg that's massive’. I didn't like it at all but I spent a few hours trying not to hate it so much.”

To make matters worse, the sizing of the ring was completely wrong to the point where it got stuck on her finger.

This might have been a sign as the bride-to-be had to be taken to hospital to have the ring cut from her finger.

“The pegs were trying to cut me at every opportunity, and it was way too tight. I did get measured, twice, and I sent him my measurements from every country, but the jeweller f****d up still.” she continued in her rant.

“I'm devastated and crying. He can't get me another ring because it won't be possible before the wedding. I'll never be engaged for real.”

She asked other group members to make her laugh but instead they advised her to reconsider the relationship after not getting what she asked for.

"Sounds like you are compromising a lot and not getting any of what you want in return. Postpone the wedding. Don't do it this way. If he isn't even listening or caring now... well.. I speak from experience and a divorce,' one woman said.

“This was obviously important to you and if he can’t listen and respect you enough to do this right it sounds like there might be bigger issues at play,' one person wrote.

“Would you consider postponing the wedding for a while. Is this a one off? The fact that he didn’t listen to what you had expressed you would like to receive doesn’t bode well. I get he may have been coming from a place of well meaning but you told him exactly what you would like and he totally disregarded it. Please don’t rush into marriage,” another suggested.

“If you still feel this is the man you want to spend your life with tell him you would like a long engagement with the ring of your choice and if he can’t respect that then you have a pretty good idea of what you are getting in to,” someone else commented.

The woman was not having any of it and replied to the comments in defence of her future husband.

“In general he's amazing. I genuinely thought I'm going to get a beautiful ring. I was actually in shock how bad it is because I never saw it coming,” she began.

“I also blame the jeweller a lot more than him, I mean I'm sad he didn't get me the one I wanted as it is for sale but the jeweller did everyone dirty the most in this scenario.”

She also revealed that they eventually went shopping together and purchased a new ring.

Images: Facebook

QEII attends her first royal engagement on wheels

Queen Elizabeth has attended her first royal event on wheels, as she arrived at the Chelsea Flower Show in a luxury buggy.

Her Majesty made a last minute decision to attend the event, but it wasn't her bright fuchsia coat that got people talking.

The Queen was all smiles when she showed up for the royal preview event, as she arrived in a luxury buggy due to her recent health and mobility issues.

It's the first time in almost a decade that the Queen has been seen arriving at a public royal engagement in a buggy with a Buckingham Palace spokeswoman telling the Daily Mail "adjustments have been made for the Queen's comfort".

The four-seater buggy, which has been dubbed the "Rolls Royce" of premium golf carts, cost £62,000 ($120,000) and was built by a Danish manufacturer.

It includes recliner cream-leather seats, as well as a mini fridge, and features a 10.1inch tablet style screen next to the steering wheel to offer maps and weather updates.

Her Majesty was accompanied by Prince Edward and his wife Sophie, Countess of Wessex, as well as Princess Beatrice and her husband Eduardo Mapelli Mozzi.

The Queen's presence at the event comes under a new rule put in place by the Palace for the 96-year-old monarch.

While she's still mentally alert and continuing to carry out virtual engagements, it's now understood the Palace will no longer announce whether she will attend an event in person until the day.

Instead, it is assumed that her son Prince Charles, 73, will take her place as he has been doing for quite some time.

Despite the Queen's surprise attendance at the Chelsea Flower Show, it is currently unclear how many Jubilee events she will attend.
