Woman “bullied” on plane over budget seating trick

A young woman has recalled a flight from hell when she was “bullied” by a couple who were trying to utilise a seating hack that went viral on TikTok.

The solo traveller took to Reddit to recount the story and ask social media users if she was in the wrong for her action.

The woman began by saying she usually pays more to select her plane seat ahead of time, but a medical emergency on another plane had her waiting on standby and left with no option other than to sit in a middle seat.

When she was finally able to board, she was greeted by a couple who had purchased both the window and aisle seats in a bid to have more space, utilising a travel “trick” that has been popular on TikTok.

The method, which has been dubbed the 'poor man's business class', usually leaves travellers with an empty middle seat and more space, and few travellers opt to pick a middle seat.

“When I got to my row the man and woman were chatting and sharing a snack... it was obvious they were together. I mentioned to the man that I'm in the middle, and he got up to let me in,” the unsuspecting traveller wrote on Reddit.

“I asked them if they would prefer to sit together, I said I was totally okay with that. The woman reacted rudely to this and said ‘you're not supposed to be sitting here anyway’.”

After noticing how the plane was full, she offered to show the pair her new ticket with the correct seat number on it.

“She flicked her hand at my ticket and made a disgusted sound. I offered again if they wanted to sit together to which she didn't reply, her partner said it's okay and... made some small talk,” she continued.

The man’s girlfriend then interrupted their conversation to ask,”'Did you use one of those third party websites to book your flight? It's so frustrating when people cheap out to inconvenience others.”

The American woman explained that she had booked her flight directly and she had been placed on standby like everyone else and didn't choose the middle seat - she was assigned it.

She then tried to keep the peace by refusing to engage with the furious woman.

“I was so done with her attitude, I put my headphones on and attempted to do my own thing,” she explained.

But the “entitled” girlfriend wasn't letting it go, as the woman explained, “This woman kept reaching over me and tapping her partner and trying to talk to him in a way that was super intrusive.”

“I could tell even her partner was trying to engage her less so that she would hopefully stop, but she didn't.”

“I think they tried to pull that tactic where they don't sit together on purpose...hoping no one will sit between them. But on full flights it doesn't work. And even so - it's not the other person's fault.”

The traveller's post was met with hundreds of comments slamming the girlfriend’s behaviour, as one person wrote, “It's like a toddler having a tantrum.”

“She was disappointed and a total a**hole. Gross entitled people,” another added.

Another person applauded the traveller’s level-headed behaviour, writing, “Wow! You are my hero for keeping it classy - I’m afraid I would not have been as kind as you.”

George Floyd deserved a better life

George Perry Floyd, Jr. was murdered when Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin sank his knee into Floyd’s neck for nine minutes and 29 seconds. Video footage went viral within hours, helping to inspire protests against racism and police violence that lasted all the American summer of 2020.

But while the size of the protests was unprecedented, the activism of that summer had deep roots. Journalists across the United States and indeed the world, focused attention on that history of protest, as they had done during the 2014 police killings of Eric Garner, choked to death in New York, and Michael Brown, shot in Ferguson, Missouri.

At the Washington Post, reporters and researchers devoted significant resources to a six-part series, George Floyd’s America. Now, two of those journalists, Robert Samuels and Toluse Olorunnipa, have expanded the work into a book: His Name Is George Floyd: One Man’s Life and the Struggle for Racial Justice.

When Floyd was born in 1973, 200,000 people were incarcerated in the US. By the time of his death, as Samuels and Olorunnipa point out, that number exceeded 2 million. The proportionate rate of growth of that number in Texas, where Floyd grew up, is even worse. African Americans are locked up at 4.75 times the rate of white Americans; Latinos at 1.3 times the rate.

This extraordinary rate of incarceration is a political choice rather than a reflection of more violent criminals being locked up. Rates of incarceration increase with political conservatism and the increased rates of poverty, income inequality and unemployment that accompany that conservatism. Extensive investment in prisons, jails and police forces has created a self-perpetuating system that evolves by producing the very criminals it locks up.

This life-and-times biography poignantly depicts the mechanisms by which African Americans, especially male children and adults, become disproportionately the fodder for that system. A long history of racism, it might be said, funnelled George Floyd to prison.

The grandson of sharecroppers

Floyd’s two parents were both born to sharecroppers in North Carolina. The cycle of poverty in which they were trapped was not of their own making. Black Americans have been prevented from building wealth from the moment slavery ended.

Floyd’s great-great-grandfather, for example, who was born into slavery in 1857, amassed land worth $US30,000 in 1920, but his white neighbours stole it from him by a mixture of fraud underpinned by the threat of violence. That tale is absolutely typical for a majority of Black families in the US South.

The knock-on effects have been intensified by government policies that meant for generations, Black Americans had fewer opportunities for education; earned less even for the same work; and were prevented from buying property that would build wealth over generations.

Desperate for a better life for her three children, Floyd’s mother uprooted them to Houston, Texas, when Floyd was four. There, they lived in public housing in the segregated Third Ward.

Government policies that requisitioned homes from Black residents elsewhere in Houston had forced them into this section of the city. In the Cuney Homes development, known as “the Bricks,” even today the median income is US$15,538, well under half the national average.

Floyd attended the local Jack Yates Senior High School, opened in 1926 when education was segregated by race and never the equal of other Houston schools catering to white children. As Floyd grew to 193 centimetres tall, he learned to offset the alarm that his size and colour induced in people.

He became self-deprecating and deliberately easy-going, charming people across generations everywhere he went. Excelling at football, he secured entry to college.

But Floyd’s dreams of playing pro football were stymied by his academic achievements. Never good at tests, Floyd fell behind by middle school and struggled to graduate high school. There were just not the resources in the schools to make up for living in poverty in an overcrowded flat with the responsibilities of caring for relatives.

After four years at two colleges, Floyd dropped out and returned to Houston. Not long after, he was arrested for the first time for selling drugs.

Samuels and Olorunnipa do an extremely good job of showing that at every node along the passage toward being turned into fodder for the prison-industrial complex, Floyd’s chance of escape was significantly less than that of a white man of the same age. Reading how Floyd’s options narrowed, it was impossible not to share his frustration and despair.

Forensic exposé of injustice

Quotas for arrests meant police sought the “low-hanging fruit” of petty drug dealing done on the streets. Misconduct charges for these police officers are common: the cop who arrested Floyd in 1997 for selling drugs was sacked in 2002 after being charged with theft and hampering arrest. The officer who arrested Floyd in 2004 was “later accused of falsifying charges in hundreds of drug cases, including the one involving Floyd.”

Chauvin himself had faced 29 charges of misconduct and internal investigations prior to murdering Floyd. (Only 18 appear on the city’s police internal affairs records.) But because records of “decertification” are patchy, such “wandering” officers can often get themselves rehired.

The officers can stay unaccountable by targeting impoverished men who, unable to afford lawyers, are more likely to accept plea deals. Floyd was never tried by jury; he rather accepted eight plea deals.

He knew that even if he got to court, the decision was unlikely to be positive because the state of Texas does not provide public defenders. Rather, the court pays for a private lawyer to defend those who can’t afford their own representation. Judges in Harris County, where Houston is located, more often than not will appoint lawyers who had donated to their election campaigns.

In 2007, police arrested Floyd for a violent assault on evidence provided by a dubious photo ID process. (It has since been improved.) Facing up to 40 years of prison, a reluctant Floyd accepted a plea deal for five.

Claustrophobia made Floyd’s time in prison difficult, and yet he discovered that none of the mental health, drug addiction, or education programs included in legislation such as the notorious 1994 Crime Bill, which sloshed billions of dollars into prison building, were available. As the authors point out, it was only after the opioid crisis hit white communities that such funds were expended. In short, whereas policymakers declared crack cocaine a crime problem, they saw opiate addictions, more commonly associated with white people, as an epidemic or public health emergency.

The man responsible for prosecuting the case against Derek Chauvin, Jerry Blackwell, knew well the racism inherent at every level of what we uncritically call “the criminal justice system.”

Blackwell anticipated the defence would claim that Floyd’s drug use or some physical anomaly was the reason he had died. He therefore required an independent medical examiner review the coronial findings into Floyd’s death.

That person, and the examiner who worked for the Floyd family in the civil case against the city of Minneapolis (which the city settled before trial for a record $US27 million), both questioned whether the autopsy had been conducted correctly. Specifically, they doubted whether the incisions made on Floyd’s body were sufficient to ascertain the cause of death. And, indeed, the defence claimed that Floyd’s drug use and a supposedly enlarged heart had contributed to his death.

This was not unique; as the authors report, in 2021 researchers found evidence that medical examiners “had misclassified or covered up nearly 17,000 deaths that involved police between 1980 and 2018”.

All this detail might make the book sound dull, but the research is woven lightly through the account of Floyd’s life so as to maintain momentum. We learn too about Floyd’s family, friends, girlfriends, and his young daughter Gianna. The authors bring to life Floyd’s ability to take people as he found them, underpinned by a deep Christian faith in God.

Activism

The final third of the book, which focuses on events after Floyd’s death, is also gripping. Even as we know the outcome, the twists and turns in the criminal case against Chauvin make for heart-in-the-mouth reading. Chauvin was convicted of murder and manslaughter and is serving a 22-and-a-half year sentence. And in early July a federal judge sentenced Chauvin to 21 years in prison for violating George Floyd’s civil rights – the sentence will be served concurrently.)

Even more striking is the depiction of the bravery of protestors in Minneapolis and of Floyd’s family members, especially his brother, Philonise Floyd, as they seized an opportunity they never wanted – as spokespeople for justice.

Joined by the civil rights veterans, the Reverends Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, Philonise campaigned hard for federal legislation to reform policing. Republican opposition to the hardest-hitting sections of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, introduced to Congress in February 2021 by Rep. Karen Bass, meant the bill foundered – and has still not been passed.

Unlike all the earlier sections of the book, the activism around police and legislative reform is not given quite the context it deserves. Although Samuels and Olorunnipa interviewed 400 people for their book, activists who have long campaigned against police brutality and for the dismantling of the entire criminal justice system in favour of a society built on equal distribution of resources, such as Angela Davis and Ruthie Wilson Gilmore, do not appear.

Nor is there much comment on the efficacy of prior efforts to reform the criminal justice system via legislation. Banning choke-holds, for instance, will not end police murders when Black lives are still not regarded as mattering as much as those of white people.

This criticism aside, His Name is George Floyd is a monumental achievement – a work of activism in itself.

Bringing Floyd vividly to life, it makes an impassioned and persuasive plea for the dignity and preciousness of life. The book’s cover deliberately evokes the posters held aloft during the 1968 workers’ strike in Memphis, Tennessee (when Martin Luther King, Jr. was killed), that proclaimed “I Am a Man.”

George Floyd was a man, too, who deserved a better life.

This article originally appeared on The Conversation.

Images: Penguin

"Walk the rooms": Inside the house that Johnny Cash built

Johnny Cash's former home has hit the market, with the California property expected to sell for up to $1.8 million.

Cash, who passed away in 2003 at the age of 71, shared the property with his first wife, Vivian Liberto, and the home is adorned with the relics of Johnny's love for music.

The house features a wood-panelled recording studio, wall-mounted turn tables and a country motif living room.

The artist reportedly built the 4,500 sq. ft. home in Casitas Springs, California, back in 1961 as an escape from his demanding lifestyle.

Johnny and Vivian, along with their three daughters, spent six years in the homestead retreat, which was rumoured to be built to Cash's exact wishes.

According to the listing agents of Douglas Elliman, "Johnny bought the land and built the house to his exact specifications, walking the rooms and deciding on exact placement and layout. He created a secluded sanctuary, unique to this rural small-town enclave. Longtime locals recount stories of Johnny setting up speakers on the hillside outside the house and playing concerts for the townspeople down below."

Inside the five bedroom home, most rooms remain original to Johnny and Vivian's vision, with painted ceilings featuring a touch of glitter, an original wall-mounted turntable and intercom system, and curved brick fireplace in the family room.

Despite a modern uplift in the his and hers suites, the property is undeniably Cash's with custom wood built-ins, exposed brick walls, natural wooden beams and a country motif living room.

The grounds are equally mesmerizing with live oaks, verdant gardens, a sparkling swimming pool, and corrals and fields ready for horses, pigs, goats, chickens or other rural uses.

Man selling US$60 million castle so he can build another one

The fairytale castle that looks straight out of the opening credits to any Disney movie - a custom-built castle in northeast Connecticut, US.

After originally being put on the market for US$35 million in November 2021, this incredible nine-bedroom masterpiece has been freshly re-listed .... for almost DOUBLE, at US$60 million.

The reason for the price increase? Its owner, Chris Mark, needs funding – a LOT more funding – to move on and begin construction on yet another fairytale castle.

“We had a couple of serious inquiries,” agent John Pizzi of Randall Realtors told The Post of the fairytale property’s luck since November. “The owner is relocating out of state and he thought he would build another castle, and in talking to architects and engineers, he realised he would need in the ballpark of US$60 million to construct another mediaeval-energy mansion."

Mark completed the current castle in 2010, but is ready to move on from it now that his daughters have graduated high school.

Mark — who is the descendant of a Chicago steel tycoon – was very hands-on and passionate in having the castle built. He went as far as buying a boat manufacturer to more easily acquire materials needed, and imported the labor of Polish, Czech and Russian craftsmen to construct it.

“You would think it was something from the 1400s or 1500s, but it’s less than 20 years old,” Pizzi noted of the high quality result of Mark’s energies.

“Fit for the contemporary king, this architectural wonder is accessible via two different stone bridges,” reads the site dedicated to the 10-bathroom home. “Upon crossing between towering turrets, the natural stone pathways guide visitors over a deep moat that surrounds the entire estate.”

There are modern conveniences including central air, an elevator, radiant flooring, a pool, a dock and a garage, as well as gothic luxuries, such as 12 fireplaces, 126-foot-high turrets, an entry hall, a 30-acre pond, stained glass and 25 types of hardwood flooring. There’s also a raised stage auditorium, a guest apartment, a recording studio and 400 acres including a moat.

Images: Tyra Pacheco

New Zealand mosque shooting survivor completes Walk for Peace

A New Zealand man who was shot nine times completed a two-week walk and bike ride stretching across the country - all in the name of peace.

Temel Atacocugu retraced the steps of the gunman who attacked two Christchurch mosques and took 51 lives on the third anniversary of the shooting.

“I wanted to fix this damage,” Atacocugu told the Associated Press. “Because three years ago, he started that journey with hate.”

The 47-year-old said he wanted to bless the 360-kilometre route from Dunedin to the two Christchurch mosques and raise funds for charity along the way.

Though he initially intended to make the entire journey on foot, temperamental weather and the onset of severe blisters and blood poisoning saw him spend several days in a local hospital about halfway through.

“The best point was meeting lots of beautiful people and getting great support from them,” he said.

“The low point was being in the emergency room. Reese Witherspoon's lavish estate up for grabs

Oscar-winning actress, producer and media mogul Reese Witherspoon officially listed her Brentwood estate in LA, tentatively popping it on the market with a $34 million (US$25m) price tag.

Thanks to the sizzling market and a bunch of modern updates Witherspoon and husband Jim Toth made to the residence, the pair have added a hefty $12 million (US$9m) to the original $22 million (US$16m) they paid just two years ago.

It seems Witherspoon is testing the market, with the listing only providing a small handful of photos. It notes that additional photos, including the property website, are available upon request to "qualified buyers".

Located in the wild of Brentwood's Mandeville Canyon, the Country English Traditional mansion sits behind big gates, ancient trees and a long, winding driveway. The entire place is completely private to the public and feels a world away.

While Witherspoon and Toth left the overall style of the home much the same, there have been some pricey contemporary upgrades, including custom-designed finishes and woodwork, that enhance its character appeal to modern buyers.

Think a fresh white exterior; steel and brass handrails and updated timber on the grand staircase in the two-storey black and white marble and limestone foyer; new white oak hardwood floors; and a fitness room with sauna.

The kitchen, complete with butler's pantry and breakfast room, has been re-done, ditto the now-blue hued library.

The new owners will also enjoy use of a separate upstairs "owner's wing" with lavish dual bathrooms and dual boutique walk-in closets, plus an additional office or nursery.

Set on just over 3 verdant acres, the seven-bedroom 10-bathroom charmer includes 10 French doors opening to a rolling front lawn and a sweeping back lawn with breathtaking canyon views and gardens.

Images: Domain

Looking after your pet in lockdown

More time at home means we get to spend more time with our pets. While it’s easy to get busy with work, taking care of the kids, or watching the latest series on Netflix, this is precious time and we need to make sure our pets are doing OK as well.

Lockdowns can be difficult for both pets and their owners as the sudden change in schedule can be a challenging transition. So, here are some tips to make your pets life a bit easier during lockdown.

It’s important to keep your pets mentally stimulated so try to keep them entertained and help your pets with any anxiety they may be feeling during lockdown.

Pets who are bored can develop destructive habits and may vent their frustrations on items like your furniture. Dogs, in particular, will often display behaviours such as excessive barking, digging and restlessness when bored.

If your pets are showing signs of these troublesome behaviours, it may be a sign of a lack of mental stimulation. To help bust boredom during lockdown, you can incorporate some challenges into their daily activities.

Pets usually have it quite simple when it comes to meals, with the bulk of us just placing their food down and waiting for them to get stuck into work. A good place to start is by changing your pet’s feeding schedule if you want to add more intellectual stimulation to their routine.

Using food dispensing toys can also add in an extra challenge for your pets during mealtime. There are quite a few options to check out at pet stores.

Use some interactive toys

To keep your pet busy throughout the day, why not invest in a doggy board game or a canine puzzle. You can also play makeshift games which focus on memory with your pets.

A great way to keep your pets incentivised is using toys which allow treats to be hidden inside so your pet will need to use their brain to figure out how to get them out!

Stay active

We know it’s not always possible to given the current climate but depending on lockdown restrictions, maintaining a consistent routine for your dog’s walks is an essential part of helping them adjust.

Allowing your dog time to explore around and locate safe spots to wander and run freely helps make every walk exciting.

This can be a difficult time but remember to take advantage of this opportunity to unwind at home with your pet. You may find it’s one of the best things about lockdown – spending more quality time with your pet!

Photo: Shutterstock

“Hunk of junk”: Mum’s overly honest caravan ad has internet in stitches

Glastonbury mum Katie Perkins has obviously had enough of the 27-year-old caravan taking up space on her property.

So, in a fit of fury, she took to Facebook Marketplace to try and find a prospective buyer – but soon turned her post into an opportunity to vent a bit of pent-up rage at the “monstrosity” that had been plaguing her for so long.

The UK woman was definitely a little too honest in her expletive-laden ad, and the post quickly went viral due to her astonishingly blunt descriptions.

“It is a tin shed on wheels,” she wrote.

“It is f***ing hot in the summer. It is f***ing freezing in the winter. It even grows icicles on the inside.”

She adds that the oven and fridge are equally rubbish, but the microwave is “pretty decent.”

“Get this hunk of junk off my f***ing land,” she pleads.

“I’d love to say it’s beautiful, but I’d be lying. NASA-inspired Bubble House goes on the market

“In what may well be one of the weirdest homes you’ll ever find in Australia, architect owner Graham Birchall took almost a decade to complete the construction – a true labour of love that’s part NASA space base and part-Queensland engineering genius,” writes RealEstate.com.au of the one-of-a-kind property in Ipswich, west of Brisbane.

Having gone on sale for the first time, interest in the incredibly fascinating Bubble House has been pouring in from all corners of the globe.

"Sometimes people don't believe it when I tell them where I live," Mr Birchall told the ABC. "There are 11 domes in all ranging from four metres in diameter to eight metres in diameter, it has 16 rooms over three levels so it's rather large.

"It's got two libraries, a movie theatre, and circular windows that open and close with an iris.

"I love it because it is so spacious. You don't even notice the ceiling and the spaces just flow on from one to the other."

The Ipswich architect built the astonishing property in Karalee, west of Brisbane, in the 1980s after an idea he had during his final university thesis. "It took 10 years to build,” he said. “We built on weekends from Father's Day 1983 to Father's Day 1993.

"There were a lot of challenges – we had to invent a lot of tools like a curved ladder to build it.

"It was a lot of fun to do.

"Half of it is the Flintstones and the other half looks more like the Jetsons."

After contacting NASA for some design tips, Mr Birchall was pleased to actually hear back from them.

"I knew they had something like it on their mars rover and they sent the drawings to me, I was surprised they answered the phone call," he said.

Mr Birchall said the decision to put the quirky property up for sale after decades of living and working there was a tough one – but he was excited to be moving closer to his grandchildren.

IMAGES: RealEstate.com.au

Walk your way to better health

Hippocrates said that “walking is man’s best friend”. Nietzsche claimed that “all truly great thoughts are conceived while walking”. Thomas Jefferson insisted that “walking is the best possible exercise”. Are these just meaningless musings, or were they really on to something? Let’s take a closer look.

Stimulate the circulatory system

Getting in motion has obvious advantages for getting the heart rate up and the blood pumping, but there are also reports that it helps lower cholesterol and control high blood pressure. That’s good news for heart health and stroke risk reduction, but try to make it a brisk walk for at least 30 minutes a day to achieve some real benefits.

Improve immunity

Want to help keep diseases like type 2 diabetes, asthma and some cancers at bay? Then take a walk. Experts say that pacing the pegs can have a positive impact on the risk of diabetes. It can also help prevent colon, breast and womb cancers.

Watching your weight

Walking may not be enough in itself to lose masses of weight, but keeping it regular and as vigorous as possible will certainly burn more calories than you may first think. Best of all, it’s so easy to do; no preparation or equipment required. Just put one foot after the other!

Defending against dementia

We all know the prevalence of dementia in our society, especially as we grow older. Studies show that there can be demonstrable reductions in dementia risk from regular activity such as walking.

Build up your bones

Walking obviously puts your body weight onto your lower limbs and in doing so it assists in preventing osteoporosis – a major issue for those of us getting on in years.

Better balance

The intricate workings of our brain that keep us balanced when we are in motion are stimulated and improved when we walk – particularly on uneven surfaces, such as hiking trails. Train your brain and it will help prevent falls as we get older.

Open your mind

Walking certainly doesn’t take much concentration to execute, which leaves our brains free to think, create and problem-solve. 5 foods you didn't know could kill your dog

Read on for more bad news in the doggy diet department.

1. Grapes

Grapes are a simple healthy snack for humans, but they are toxic to dogs. Eating them can make your pooch vomit or lose his appetite. If your dog shows signs of diarrhea, abdominal pain, depression, or tremors, his kidneys could be failing. And yes, raisins are just as bad.

2. Onions

Cooked or raw, onions contain thiosulphate, a substance that causes your dog’s red blood cells to burst in a condition called hemolytic anemia. Symptoms include diarrhoea, vomiting, breathlessness, and lethargy; it could take two to four days for them to become noticeable. You also put your dog at risk if you give her certain foods that are made with onions, like pizza or tomato sauce, which could trigger the same reaction.

3. Any kind of chocolate

Chocolate is the worst kind of candy your dog can eat because it contains theobromine, a substance similar to caffeine. Baking and dark chocolates have the highest levels of theobromine, but milk and white chocolate are also harmful to dogs. As with caffeine, symptoms of chocolate poisoning include high blood pressure, tremors, and seizures.

4. Fat trimmings and cooked bones

Don’t scrape leftovers from your steak dinner into the dog bowl. Not only can fat trimmings lead to obesity - it doesn’t take many extra calories for small dogs to become obese - but they also contribute to pancreatitis. Severe cases can result in a blood infection and internal bleeding. Small bones, like those found in meat, are a choking hazard, and they can splinter and tear into a dog’s throat or intestines. If your dog wants a bone, make sure it’s a raw one.

5. Bacon

We’re as surprised as you are about this one. The high fat and sodium content put your dog at risk for pancreatitis, high blood pressure, obesity, and bowel cancer. But if you pet is begging for some of your breakfast, it’s safe to slip it small bits of low-fat, low-sodium bacon. This is the kind dog food manufacturers use in their products.

Written by Claire Nowak. This article first appeared in Reader’s Digest. 5 extraordinary uses for bananas

We all know bananas are delicious, but did you know they can very useful around the garden?

Here are five extraordinary uses for bananas you probably didn't know about.

Attract birds

Put an overripe banana on a raised platform in the garden, punching a few holes in it to make it accessible to butterflies as well as birds. Remove it at night so you don’t attract possums.

Polish leaves

Are the leaves on your indoor plants looking dull or dusty? Wipe down each leaf with the inside of a banana peel to remove the surface dust and replace it with a clean, lustrous shine.

Deter aphids

If aphids attack your roses, bury dried or cut-up banana peels a few centimetres deep around the base of the plant and they’ll soon leave. Don’t use whole peels as possums will dig them up.

Feed plants

Bananas are rich in potassium, an important garden nutrient. Dry the peels on screens in winter, grind them up in early spring and use as mulch for new plants, or cut into pieces and use as food.

Add to compost

With their high content of potassium and phosphorus, whole bananas and peels are welcome additions to a compost pile. The fruit breaks down especially fast in hot weather.

Republished with permission of Handyman Australia.
