Police appeal for information after baby seal shot

Authorities have offered up a reward of $20,000 USD ($29,000 AUD) in exchange for information after a baby seal was shot dead on a beach in Southern California.

The fatally wounded male sea lion was discovered on August 7th between two lifeguard stations at Bolsa Chica State Beach in Orange County, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

The animal was estimated to be just two years old and died the day after it was found, with an examination revealing the seal had a gunshot wound to the back, according to a statement from NOAA.

The agency said its law enforcement division was offering the reward "for information leading to a civil penalty or criminal conviction" in connection with the shooting, as the federal Marine Mammal Protection Act prohibits harassing, hunting, capturing or killing sea lions and other marine mammals.

Violators can face criminal penalties, fines, and the forfeiture of any vessel involved in the incident.

NOAA spokesperson Michael Milstein told USA TODAY that the agency hopes "the reward offer will help encourage someone who may have seen something or heard something unusual to let us know to help us identify a suspect in this case."

"We do get sea lions regularly that have been shot but this animal was still alive when found, so the wound was fresh and it was on a public beach, which hopefully increases the odds that someone knows something about what happened," Milstein added.

99-year-old woman declared accessory to over 10,000 murders

A court in Germany has upheld the conviction of a 99-year-old woman who, during the Second World War, was the secretary to the SS commander at a Nazi concentration camp.

The Federal Justice Court on Tuesday rejected the appeal of Irmgard Furchner, who was convicted of being an accessory to more than 10,000 murders and was given a two-year suspended sentence in December 2022.

Furchner was accused of being a key part of the apparatus that helped the camp near Danzig, now the Polish city of Gdansk, function, and was subsequently convicted of being an accessory to murder in 10,505 cases and an accessory to attempted murder in five cases.

At a federal court hearing in Leipzig in July, Furchner's lawyers cast doubt on whether she really was an accessory to crimes committed by the commander and other senior camp officials between 1943 and 1945, and on whether she had truly been aware of what was going on at Stutthof.

The court said that judges were convinced that Furchner “knew and, through her work as a stenographer in the commandant’s office of the Stutthof concentration camp from June 1st 1943, to April 1st 1945, deliberately supported the fact that 10,505 prisoners were cruelly killed by gassings, by hostile conditions in the camp,” by transportation to the Auschwitz death camp and by being sent on death marches at the end of the war.

Germany's main Jewish leader welcomed the ruling. “For Holocaust survivors, it is enormously important for a late form of justice to be attempted,” Josef Schuster, the head of the Central Council of Jews, said in statement.

“The legal system sent an important message today: even nearly 80 years after the Holocaust, no line can be drawn under Nazi crimes,” he added.

During the original court proceedings, prosecutors said that Furchner’s trial may be the last of its kind, however, a special federal prosecutors’ office in Ludwigsburg tasked with investigating Nazi-era war crimes says three more cases are pending with prosecutors or courts in various parts of Germany.

With any suspects now at a very advanced age, questions increasingly arise over suspects’ fitness to stand trial.

London police receive even older Russell Brand sexual assault allegation

London police have announced that they are investigating a sexual assault allegation involving British comedian and actor Russell Brand. This revelation comes in the wake of media reports that have emerged, detailing accusations made by four women against Brand for incidents that allegedly occurred between 2006 and 2013, including a rape allegation linked to his Los Angeles residence.

Brand, known for his comedy and acting career, has vehemently denied all allegations, asserting that all of his sexual relationships were consensual. The comedian gained fame as a commentator on the reality show Big Brother and subsequently played significant roles in Hollywood films such as Forgetting Sarah Marshall in 2008 and Get Him to the Greek in 2010. He was also briefly married to singer Katy Perry.

In recent times, Brand has gained prominence as a political commentator and video blogger, although some of his content has featured COVID-19 conspiracy theories and misinformation regarding vaccines.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Russell Brand (@russellbrand)

The police announcement specifically referenced a new allegation stemming from an incident in central London's Soho neighbourhood in 2003. "Miracles do exist": Astonishing return of missing teen after four years

An American teenager has been found after she went missing four years ago, when she walked into a police station and asked to be taken off the missing children list.

Alicia Navarro, who is now 18, walked into a police station in a small town in Montana, close to the Canadian border, and identified herself as the teenager who was reported missing in September 2019.

“Alicia Navarro has been located,” Glendale public safety communications manager Jose Santiago said during a press conference.

“She is by all accounts, safe, she is by all accounts healthy and she is by all accounts happy.”

The teenager reportedly left her home willingly four years ago when she was 14-years-old, leaving her parents a note when she disappeared from her house overnight on September 15th 2019.

Alicia, who has been described as a high-functioning autistic person, left a handwritten note for her parents that read, “I ran away. I will be back. I swear. I’m sorry,” before she slipped out of the house while they slept.

Her parents then didn't hear from her for four years, until they were contacted by the Glendale Police Department to let them know their child had been found.

Alicia had an emotional reunion with her mum, who never stopped looking for her, as she was very apologetic over the pain her mother went through not knowing where she was for the past four years or even if she was still alive.

Her mom, Jessica Nuñez, called the discovery of her daughter four years after her disappearance a miracle in a video she posted to Facebook.

“For everyone who has missing loved ones, I want you to use this case as an example,” she said. “Miracles do exist. Never lose hope and always fight.”

Nuñez said she doesn’t have details on her daughter’s disappearance but said “the important thing is that she is alive.”

Glendale police are now investigating how the teenager got to Montana, and how she has survived over the last four years by herself.

Alicia told police that no one has harmed her and appeared to be healthy, while the girl currently remains in Montana and is able to come and go as she pleases and has asked for privacy so she can move on with her life.

“We can only imagine what she’s going through, mentally, emotionally, as well as her family, and as much as we’d like to say this is the end, this is probably only the beginning of where this investigation will go,” Glendale PD Lt. Scott Waite said.

Fresh location being searched in Maddy McCann case

Portuguese police have revealed they will resume the search for missing toddler Madeleine McCann who disappeared in the country’s Algarve region in 2007.

Portugal’s Judicial police released a statement confirming local media reports that they would conduct the search at the request of the German authorities and in the presence of British officials.

A spokesperson from the fire brigade said police were preparing to start searches at a dam in the southern region of Algarve about 50km inland from a beach resort where Madeleine disappeared from a rented apartment while on a family holiday.

On May 22, Reuters TV footage showed police erecting tents and cordons in the area by the Arade dam, roughly 50km from Praia da Luza, where the three-year-old was last seen alive.

Portugal’s investigative Judicial Police overseeing the operation declined to comment.

Another source familiar with the investigation was not confident there would be a breakthrough, saying, “It will come to nothing”.

In mid-2020, German police jailed German citizen Christian Brueckner, a 45-year-old convicted child abuser and drug dealer who was in the Algarve in 2007, for raping a 72-year-old woman in the same area of the Algarve where Madeleine went missing. He was identified as a suspect in Madeline’s disappearance but has denied any involvement.

Brueckner remains under investigation on suspicion of murder in the McCann case but hasn’t been charged.

German police said in June 2020 that Madeleine was assumed dead and that Brueckner was likely responsible for it.

In April, a German court dismissed additional charges against him related to other Portuguese child rape and sexual assault cases that led to German prosecutors no longer having jurisdiction to investigate the McCann case.

Madeleine’s parents Kate and Gerry McCann were questioned by Portuguese police as formal suspects in 2007 but ruled them out the following year due to lack of evidence that cleared them of any involvement.

The parents continue to campaign to attract attention to their daughter’s disappearance, and British public figures from business tycoons to authors and soccer stars have made appeals for information.

Rewards for finding Madeleine have reached several million dollars.

"I fell for it!": Boys in blue crash gender reveal party

One Sydney couple have taken their friends and family by surprise with their high-stakes gender reveal, where the father-to-be was apparently put under arrest by two police officers.

Mina Ibrahim revealed their elaborate prank with a video posted to his TikTok account. Mina’s video begins with footage of the moment of his ‘arrest’, before it cuts to the TikToker at a later date, explaining that “that’s me being arrested at my baby’s gender reveal.”

He goes on to share the full video, and a promise that the ending will answer any questions his viewers may have.

In the clip, the parents-to-be can be seen talking to two uniformed NSW ‘police officers’, guests all around them, with Mina asking for onlookers to get their phones out. He then pushes one of the officers, telling them to leave, and both grab him before attempting to handcuff him, while his pregnant partner attempts to intervene.

As family members rush to assist, one of the officers calls for everyone to calm down, then delivers news that takes them all by surprise - and delight - by telling them, “it’s a baby girl.”

“So it was the cops who announced to everyone that I was having a baby girl,” present-day Mina informed his audience, before noting that there was a fake balloon inside to throw their guests off the surprise scent.

The prank attracted thousands of views online, with many flocking to his comments section to share their congratulations with the parents-to-be.

Others, while thrilled for them and their happy news, were open about their concern, having fallen for the trick right along with the couple’s loved ones.

“I fell for it and I was worried for your wife!!!,” one confessed. “I was freaking out hahahah you got me”.

“I was worried too haha … you scared me,” another said.

“Omygosh! Detective steals thousands from elderly woman

An elderly woman who was scammed out of $30,000 in an online scam has once again been stolen from, after the police officer helping her recover the money stole her bank details.

In May 2021, 74-year-old Sonia was robbed by fraudsters pretending to be NBN workers after they convinced her to transfer the hefty five-figure sum.

After discovering it was a scam, Sonia then reported the crime to NSW Police, who sent a detective to her home to investigate.

The officer was supposed to be helping Sonia recover her stolen money, but instead tried to use her credit card and banking details and purchase almost $20,000 worth of goods.

The police officer fronted Liverpool Local Court on Wednesday where his barrister tried to explain his client's behaviour saying he had gone "off the rails" and fallen into a depression due to the nature of his work.

In June 2021, the detective, who cannot be named, attended Sonia's home several times to investigate what happened, often wearing his full police uniform.

To gain her sympathy, he said he had a brain aneurysm and had not yet told his girlfriend or work.

According to police documents tendered to the court, Sonia trusted him and he told her she "reminded him of his own grandmother", the Daily Telegraph reported.

When he asked to see her online banking details, credit cards and passwords, Sonia gave them to him willingly, assuming they were needed for his investigation.

The detective tried to buy close to $20,000 worth of items from JB Hi Fi, Big W and Myer, including iPhones, GoPro cameras and Apple Watches.

Thankfully for Sonia, none of the attempted purchases went through, as they were all rejected by Sonia's bank as suspicious activity.

When Sonia was notified of the attempted transactions, she immediately suspected the detective who had been supposed to be helping her.

In court this week, the now former detective pleaded guilty to stealing Sonia's bank details, and will will face Downing Centre District Court in Sydney on May 12th when he will be sentenced.

More than 18 months after the events, Sonia is still very troubled by what happened and blames herself.

"I can't switch off a feeling that I was stupid in the first place ... I trusted this guy and then he did that," she said.

Police finally reveal motive behind murder of campers Russell Hill and Carol Clay

Police have alleged that the two secret lover campers, Russel Hill and Carol Clay, were "childhood sweethearts" who had started their affair 15 years ago.

In a summary of the case against Gregory Lynn, who allegedly killed the pair, police believe that Mr Hill and Ms Clay had rekindled their romance 15 years prior, and would go on regular camping trips to "spend time together".

The pair allegedly drifted apart and had children with other partners, according to the documents provided to the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

Mr Hill was married to another woman for 51 years, and according to the police facts provided to the court, his wife believed that he had gone camping alone.

“Those close to them believe that they kept their relationship a secret to spare Hill’s family from distress,” the police statement read.

The pair had gone camping in Wonnangatta Valley on March 19 2020, and they vanished sometime after 6 pm the next day.

Police alleged that Mr Lynn killed the pair after an altercation over a drone, with Mr Hill fatally stabbed and Ms Clay shot in the head.

Police also believed that he returned to the area in May and November 2020 to try and "destroy" evidence by setting the pair's remains on fire.

Their bodies were buried around 40km from the campsite in Dargo on November 2021.

Mr Lynn was in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court this week for a committal hearing to decide whether there is enough evidence for him to stand trial in the Supreme Court.

Images: Victoria Police

What are Iran’s morality police?

Until recently, most people outside of Iran had never heard of the country’s morality police, let alone followed their wider role in the region. But on Sept. 16, 2022, the death of Jina Mahsa Amini sparked widespread protests in the streets of Iran and elsewhere that have shown no signs of abating. Amini had been in the custody of Gasht-e-Ershad, the Persian name of this notorious police force, for “improper wearing of hijab.”

On Dec. 4, reports citing Iran’s Attorney General Mohammad Jafar Montazeri suggested that the morality police had been abolished. Montazeri said that the morality police lacked judiciary power and that hijab laws were under review, which led to widespread speculation about whether the regime was trying to find a way forward.

Yet, there were those who doubted the comments and called it a “false flag” on the part of those in power. A few noted that even if the morality police were abolished and the mandatory wearing of the hijab repealed, the regime would still need to be held accountable for all of its human rights violations.

These sentiments have formed the basis of a three-day nationwide strike that began on Dec. 5 and has shuttered thousands of shops, including those in the historic Grand Bazaar in the heart of Tehran, bringing the economy of the country to a grinding halt.

But who are the morality police? Where did they come from? And what is their history during and before the Islamic Republic of Iran?

A vice squad in context

The mandate and power of morality police date back to before the Islamic Revolution that shook Iran in 1979, and their reach has extended throughout the Middle East.

The Quran says that it is imperative that religious leaders “ensure right and forbid wrong.” To carry this out, beginning at the time of the Prophet Mohammad, public morals were overseen by market inspectors referred to as muhtasib.

As a scholar of gender and feminism in the Middle East, I’ve studied the long history of debates about the role of Islam in regulating morality. The earliest evidence of a muhtasib, interestingly, was a woman selected in Medina by the prophet himself.

Over the centuries, the mandate of the muhtasib became focused on regulating dress, particularly for women. While these market inspectors were recorded as issuing fines and occasional lashings, they did not have the same level of authority as the judiciary.

By the early 20th century, however, the muhtasibs had transitioned into the vice squads, patrolling the streets to make sure people were complying with Islamic values. It was mostly in Saudi Arabia under the influence of Wahhabism that morality police forces first gained prominence and momentum. The first modern morality police force, an official committee charged with “commanding right and forbidding wrong,” was formed in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1926. Comprised mostly of men, the force was charged with enforcing modest dress, regulating heterosocializing – engagement with members of the opposite sex if unmarried or unrelated – and ensuring citizens attended prayer.

By 2012, more than one-third of the 56 countries making up The Organization for Islamic Cooperation had some form of religiously informed squadrons seeking to uphold right and forbid wrong as interpreted by Islamists in power.

A committee to enact revolution

In Iran, the morality police first appeared in the form of what was called the “Islamic Revolution Committee” following the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the Shiite cleric who led the revolution, wanted to control the behavior of Iranian citizens after too many years of what he and his fellow Islamists called a period of “secular Westoxication.”

The Islamic Revolution Committee, called “Komiteh” by many Iranians, was merged in the 1980s with the Gendarmerie, the first rural police force overseeing modern highways, to form the Law Enforcement Command of the Islamic Republic of Iran. In 1983, when mandatory veiling laws were passed, the Komiteh was tasked with ensuring these laws were upheld in addition to their other duties of ensuring right and forbidding wrong.

A changing time

The current morality police – the Guidance Patrol or Gasht-e-Ershad – were given formal standing as an arm of the police force by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in 2005.

The group had been steadily growing in size since the 1980s, and by 2005 consisted of more than 7,000 officers. Women make up less than a quarter of the squadron but frequently accompany their male counterparts, who often arrive in unmarked vans and pour out into the streets in green uniforms. The women, meanwhile, wear black cloaks that cover them from head to toe.

For most of the 1980s and 1990s, the Komiteh was comprised of religiously devout followers of the regime who joined the force at the encouragement of clerics. However, by the early 2000s, Iran’s population was comprised mostly of young people. When Ahmadinejad made the Komiteh an official police force, a number of young men joined to fulfill their mandatory military conscription. This younger generation was more lax than their older counterparts, leading to inconsistent patrolling.

When President Ebrahim Raisi came to power in 2021, he emboldened the morality police to engage in harsh crackdowns on the Iranian populace, particularly in the cities. Raisi, like Khomeini and other clerics, used this vice squad to send a message to Iranian citizens that the regime is watching.

This clampdown, particularly when it led to the death of Amini, has been met with outrage by a large number of Iranians. While it is not yet confirmed whether or not the morality police have been disbanded, protesters are continuing to press the regime for change.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag.
Mourners who were hit with traffic fines during the funeral procession for Indigenous singer Archie Roach won’t see penalties dropped, Victoria Police has confirmed.

Seven infringements were issued to people who were part of the funeral cortege and ran red lights during the procession from Melbourne to Gunditjmara country, where Roach was laid to rest in a private ceremony.

The driver of the hearse carrying Roach’s body was among those fined.

"Disobeying a red light signal is considered a serious traffic offence," a police spokeswoman said in a statement.

"It poses a significant safety risk both to the driver and other road users. New Zealand police farewell four-legged hero

A beloved member of the New Zealand Police Force has been farewelled, after Dunedin police dog Gill died from cancer.

The 10-year-old was the oldest police dog working in Dunedin’s police dog section when he passed away.

Senior Constable Tim Roy, who fostered Gill as a pup, worked with the German Shepherd for most of his operational years, according to a press release.

“He’s been an amazing dog right up until the end," Roy said.

"Gill was everything I could have asked for and more as a handler. He was big, strong, fearless, super driven, loved to work and known for his deafening excited howl when being deployed.

“Gill was more than an outstanding police dog. His goofy personality, playfulness and loyalty were what made him extra special.”

Sergeant Mike Calvert, head of the Dunedin Dog Section, described the canine as a strong all-round police dog with numerous successful tracks and catches.

“He also thrived as an AOS-qualified dog, and as recently as last month was taking part in AOS callouts and training days,” Calvert said.

“Old age hadn’t slowed him up and he kept his place on AOS leaving Tim’s younger dog Leo, aged 3, to pick up the active running around for general patrol dog work.”

Senior Constable Reuben Whalley, who worked with Gill in Christchurch, described him as “a lovely dog” who could switch off from work and enjoy family life at home.

Gill, who’s policing career began back in 2013, has done more than catch criminals and find people, having fathered a litter of puppies in 2016 and featured on the 2017 and 2023 Police Dog Trust Calendars.

“Gill just loved to please his handler, whether responding to jobs or taking part in the softer side of community policing, including community events and Christmas parades," Calvert said.

"It’s a shame he didn’t get to enjoy retirement."

Images: New Zealand Police

“We need answers”: Parents of man shot by police speak out

The parents of a man who was shot and killed by a police officer on a Queensland beach have spoken about how they were told the heartbreaking news.

Luke Gilbert was with his girlfriend at Airlie Beach, Townsville, when he allegedly approached police with a pen knife in the early hours on the morning of Saturday, October 1.

The 24-year-old allegedly continued advancing towards the patrolling officers when he was shot five times.

After police rendered first aid to him, Luke was transported to Proseperine Hospital but died a short time later.

AIRLIE BEACH: A man aged in his 20’s and allegedly armed with a knife was fatally shot by police in Airlie Beach this morning (October 1) https://t.co/cBz4wyfM3u pic.twitter.com/mGcTxtosUo

— Queensland Police (@QldPolice) September 30, 2022

His parents, Nicola and Darren Gilbert, told 9News of the tragic moment when police informed them that their son had died.

“Two police officers came in and they just stood, they didn’t even ask us to sit down, and they just stood at the kitchen bench and just said, ‘We’ve very sorry to tell you but your son has died’,” Ms Gilbert said.

Luke, who grew up in Western Australia, was working in Townsville at the time of the incident.

Mr Gilbert has called for an explanation for why his son was shot, describing it as a “massive failing” of police.

“What happened? We need answers,” he said.

“This is a massive failing of the Queensland Police.”

According to the police union, officers had no choice but to shoot Luke after he allegedly “lunged” at them with the knife.

The officers fired four or five shots at Luke after he continued to approach them despite them drawing their weapons and telling him to stop.

Ian Leavers, the President and CEO of the Queensland Police Union, said Luke had “all of a sudden produced a knife from his hoodie and started threatening police”.

“The police have tried to further engage and they have retreated and moved from that location and tried and continue to communicate with that male person,” he told reporters.

“At a point, (he) has lunged at police and they’ve had no other alternative but to use their firearm.

“Police did all they could to try and resolve this matter peacefully.”

As police swarmed the popular tourist spot on Saturday to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting, Superintendent Graeme Paine said officers were speaking to several witnesses and that the incident was captured on CCTV.

Several people in the area at the time also captured the shooting on video.

In one clip, shots can be heard in the background and a man says, “They just f***ing shot him.

“I thought they were gonna get him with a taser.

“They just f***ing shot him c***s. He just kept walking to the cops.”

In the wake of the news, the 24-year-old’s brother Zac shared an emotional tribute on Facebook.

“I don’t know how to say this It’s not even sinking in yet and it doesn’t seem real,” he wrote.

“Life will never be the same, he deserved a lot better than this! I can’t believe this has happened, he's at rest now.”

Luke’s brother claimed that police used “excess force” after the 24-year-old pulled out a knife “for reasons unknown right now”.

“For all those who don't know this, my brother was on a night out with his girlfriend and as far as we know luke walked up to two police officers, they were talking and then for reasons unknown right now, luke pulled out a pen knife (4cm) and in reaction to that the officers shot 4 to 5 times at my brother and 1 of them being fatal,” Zac wrote.

“There’s a lot of speculation in the media about the circumstances surrounding the loss of my brother but just know the truth is excess force was used on him which killed him and that can never be undone, they didn’t try the taser, the baton or the pepper spray first they went straight for the guns carelessly.”

The incident is being investigated by the Ethical Standards Committee on behalf of the state coroner.

Images: 9News / Facebook

"This is shocking": Police slammed over sneaky trap

A New Zealand man has clashed with police after he accused an officer of posing as a window washer to catch drivers using their mobile phones.

While he was stopped at a traffic light in Manurewa, South Auckland, the man began filming after noticing an undercover cop in a hoodie standing nearby.

"He's the cop who gave me the ticket!" he can be heard telling a friend sitting in the car with him.

"This is bad, man. He's pretending to be a window washer!"

The passenger then gets out of the car and makes his way toward the officer to “let the public know” what was happening.

"Alright guys so we've got police here hiding, pretending to be window washers," he says while standing next to the police officer.

"So what they do is they stand here and they dress up in hoodies with a window washer thing and they're looking and trying to get people tickets for fines, maybe phones, seatbelts."

Within moments, several other officers approach the man.

One officer confirms that the “window washer” was an undercover cop, and when the man questions whether the tactic was “saving lives”, an officer says it was.

The man is then told by police that he could film but has to do it from the opposite side of the road so that the undercover operation isn’t interfered with.

😂😂😂 wish one of your cousins is the undercover cop lmao? pic.twitter.com/5QWvlg2hYy

— Danny (@disndatnz) October 4, 2022

The hoodie-wearing officer is then encouraged to return to his spot by the side of the road.

The clip has since been shared on TikTok and by Today FM, with morning talk show host Duncan Garner speaking to the man’s friend, Neil, who was in the car during the incident.

“I've driven up and down the country all the time and I’ve never seen any sort of act like this anywhere apart from there," Neil said.

"And the fact that he put on clothes to sort of fit into that area is really quite rude."

Stuff reported that NZ Police Inspector Tony Wakelin said the impersonation was inappropriate and that the operation would cease.

Meanwhile, social media users have been slamming the police for their “sneaky ways”.

"You cannot tell me this isn’t insanely deceptive," one commented.

"This is shocking," another shared.

"Isn't this entrapment?" a third said.

Others defended the operation, saying that the police were just trying to prevent people from doing the wrong thing.

"Lord. Get off your phone while you're driving. End of story," one wrote.

"No this is good, I have been rear-ended by someone texting and driving," another added.

"They are trying to prevent crime and save lives but at the same time they are distracting drivers which can cause accidents," one person shared on Reddit.

“So it’s not a good method".

Images: Today FM

"The injuries are horrific": Rollercoaster victim identified

The victim of a shocking roller coast accident has been identified as Melbourne based woman Shylah Rodden.

Ms Rodden, aged 26, remains in intensive care after sustaining horrific injuries in the accident, which remains under investigation.

Her father, Alan Ridden, says there is great mystery surrounding the situation. On Monday, police claimed Shylah was struck by the ride at the Royal Melbourne Show while trying to retrieve her mobile phone from the tracks, however eye witnesses claim she had been on the ride.

Horrified audience members watched on as the chaos unfolded, with paramedics treating Shylah for serious injuries before she was taken to hospital. Her father suggests these injuries are life-changing.

“Obviously I can't talk to my daughter. She's going to be in a coma for quite a while,” Mr Rodden told Daily Mail Australia.

“The injuries are horrific. Horrific. She's brain damaged. It's pelvic, her arms, legs, back, neck - there's hardly a thing that's not broken. I just can't work out how the hell so much damage has been done. Even the doctors have said they haven't seen anything as bad as this for a long time.”

One witness, who had been positioned next to the ride, claimed police assertions the woman had been retrieving a phone were not accurate.

"I did not see her walking or climbing on the tracks at all, we saw her flying from the ride, where she landed and how she landed is not consistent with being hit," a woman claimed.

"Not from what we witnessed. We were standing right next to the ride when it happened."

The witness had taken her young son on the ride shortly before the accident.

"We saw her fall from the ride, (heard) the scream and the crack of her hitting the ground. My husband was one of the first on the scene. We were standing right next to it when it happened ," she said.

In a statement issued by Victoria Police, investigators claimed the woman may have walked onto the track to try and retrieve a dropped phone.

Speaking to ABC Mornings host Virginia Trioli on Monday, Show CEO Brad Jenkins refused to say whether there was a fence around the ride or how high that fence was.

The incident remains under investigation and anyone who witnessed it are urged to call crime stoppers.

Image: Facebook
