Grandfather killed after being mistaken for kidnapper

An Indian grandfather has been tragically killed in a one-punch attack after being mistaken for a kidnapper.

Mewa Singh, 60, was visiting his son and grandson in Christchurch when he suffered the fatal blow at the hands of a stranger.

His 32-year-old attacker, whose name has been suppressed, was spending time at a park on April 7th 2023 with his son when he drove off and left his child behind to “teach his son a lesson” after the boy was misbehaving, according to Stuff.

When he returned a short time late to pick up his son, the man saw a stranger, later identified as Singh, holding his son’s hand near a bus stop and became enraged, shoving Singh and yelling “that’s my f****** son”.

He drove the child back to his ex-partner’s house and explained the situation, when his son allegedly said, Singh was “trying to walk him to daddy’s car”.

The man then decided to drive back to the park to find Singh, where he confronted the grandfather by grabbing his shirt collar and accusing him of trying to abduct his son.

He then delivered a “haymaker-style punch” to his jaw, which caused Singh to fall backwards and hit his head on the pavement.

Believing Singh to be dead, his attacker left and told his ex-partner he thought he killed him, prompting her to phone emergency services.

Despite being treated in the ICU at Christchurch Hospital, Singh did not regain consciousness and died on April 9th.

Singh’s attacker faced Christchurch High Court on Friday, when he pleaded guilty to manslaughter, and is scheduled to be sentenced in October.

Speaking to Stuff about the attack 15 months on, Singh’s son Himanshu Keshwer said his family was still beyond devastated at the sudden loss.

“He was a very good human being,” he said.

Keshwer said what happened to his father was “totally unfair”.

“Someone killed my dad and I couldn’t do anything, and still can’t do anything,” he told the outlet.

“It makes me sad, it shouldn’t have happened.”

A fundraiser was launched to support Singh’s family and transport his body back to India, raising $16,316, which exceeded the $15,000 goal.

“Loving grandfather” ousted as serial rapist

A local Bondi grandfather has been ousted by police as a serial rapist - one of the worst in New South Wales.

Following a long 40 years of investigations and using new technology for DNA as well as a shocking 12 crime scenes, Keith “Maggo” Simms has been identified as a serial rapist.

Dubbed “The Beast of Bondi”, Simms is believed to have raped and terrorised more than 30 women in Sydney's eastern suburbs from 1986 to 2001.

He died earlier this year on February 20 at the age of 66.

When Simms was ready to attack a woman, he would wear a balaclava and approach them with a knife, putting a hand across their mouth and threatening to kill them.

It was only in 2016, when police received a weak DNA match to a relative of Simms, that they were eventually able to tie the crimes back to him.

Unfortunately for his victims, Simms died before police were able to question him and get them some form of justice.

His family also had no idea and referred to him as a “loving family man”, and when his wife found out she was shocked.

“His family had no idea at all … we met with his wife and she was absolutely shocked,” Detective Sergeant Shelley Johns, from Strike Force Doreen said, The Daily Telegraph reported.

Sex Crimes squad boss Detective Superintendent Jayne Doherty said that despite his death, it gives his victims a peace of mind knowing he’s not out there anymore.

“It was important for the victim survivors and that is why we persevered. We wanted to let them know we were not just guessing it was him. It also meant we are not still looking for someone that is still out there,” she said.

“So those women who are walking down the street and are still wondering: Is that him? They now know that person is deceased.”

Images: The Daily Telegraph

Elizabeth Hurley speaks out against her son’s grandfather

Elizabeth Hurley has spoken out against her son Damian’s paternal grandfather, releasing a statement criticising the decision to prevent the 19-year-old from inheriting an expected $330 million AUD (or $354 million NZD) from his family trust.

Damian’s father, Steve Bing, died by suicide in 2020 at 55. He and Hurley dated between 2001 and 2002.

Steve Bing’s father and Damian’s paternal grandfather, multimillionaire Dr Peter Bing, made an appeal against Damian and his half-sister, Kira Kerkorian, to receive a share of Steve Bing’s fortune as they were born out of wedlock.

In a statement made to The Daily Mail over the weekend, Hurley said she was hurt by Dr Bing’s decision, especially after Steve had won a court battle overturning Dr Bing’s attempt to exclude Damian and Kira from the family trust before his death.

“When Stephen took his own life, he died thinking his children were going to be taken care of,” Hurley said in the statement.

“Stephen fought very hard in his last year to have his children recognised and repeatedly told me how incredibly important it was to him.

“What Stephen wanted has not been callously reversed. "Justice for Chloe": Unbearable choice for grandfather accused of cruise ship fatal fall

A grandfather accused in the fatal fall of his granddaughter Chloe from an 11th storey window of a cruise ship pleaded guilty on Thursday to negligent homicide.

Salvatore "Sam" Anello said that he wanted to help end "this nightmare" for his family.

His 18-month-old granddaughter Chloe slipped from his grip and fell 46 metres from an open window on a Royal Caribbean Cruises' Freedom of the Seas ship in July 2019 as the ship docked in Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rico prosecutor Laura Hernandez said Anello would be sentenced on December 10th.

“We have found justice for Chloe,” she said.

A representative for Anello’s attorney, Michael Winkleman, said in a statement to America’s NBC TODAY that Anello will not serve any jail time and will serve his probation in Indiana.

“This decision was an incredibly difficult one for Sam and the family, but because the plea agreement includes no jail time and no admission of facts, it was decided the plea deal is in the best interests of the family so that they can close this horrible chapter and turn their focus to mourning Chloe and fighting for cruise passenger safety by raising awareness about the need for all common carriers to adhere to window fall prevention laws designed to protect children from falling from windows,” Winkleman said in a statement.

Winkleman also added that the family would continue its civil suit against Royal Caribbean with the goal of discovering why the window was allowed to be open.

Anello, 51, said that he did not know that the window in the children's play area was open.

“I wasn’t drinking and I wasn’t dangling her out of a window,” he said in a previous statement. He said he is colourblind and might not have realized the tinted window was open.

“We will continue the fight for justice for Chloe and to hold Royal Caribbean accountable for its brazen failure to follow the standards designed precisely to prevent children from falling out of windows,” Winkleman said in his statement.

Grandfather changes to guilty plea in cruise ship toddler death

A grandfather who allegedly dropped his 18-month-old granddaughter from the 11th floor of a cruise ship will change his plea to guilty, according to his lawyer.

Salvatore “Sam” Anello, was charged with negligent homicide after Chloe Weigand fell from an open glass window on-board the Royal Caribbean Freedom of the Seas ship in July while it was docked at Puerto Rico.

He and his family maintain that he is innocent, saying it was an accident as he wasn’t aware the window was open when he lifted the toddler up to bang on the glass – a game she enjoyed playing at home.

But the family’s lawyer revealed on Wednesday that Mr Annello will now plead guilty to the charge so he can avoid spending time in prison.

“This decision was an incredibly difficult one for Sam and the family, but because the plea agreement includes no jail time and no admission of facts, it was decided the plea deal is in the best interest of the family,” said Michael Winkleman in a statement.

Speaking to the US TODAY show last year, Chloe’s parents, Kimberley and Alan Wiegand, said Mr Anello had been “very, very distraught” ever since her tragic passing.

“You can barely look at him without crying, she was his best friend,” said Mr Wiegand.

The family is now suing the cruise ship company, accusing them of negligence by allowing the window in the ship’s children’s play area to be open.

“We still maintain this was a tragic, preventable accident that never would have occurred if Royal Caribbean followed the industry-standard window fall prevention codes that are designed for the singular purpose of preventing children from falling out of windows,” said Mr Winkleman.

“I just remember screaming, ‘I thought there was glass, I thought there was glass’,” Mr Anello told CBS in November.

“I still say it to myself. It’s just, I kind of relive it all the time and I just thought there was glass there. I don’t know what else to tell you.

“It seems like it’s all not real. She’s such a beautiful little girl. Perfect little girl.”

“She slipped”: Grandfather speaks out about 1-year-old granddaughter’s fatal fall on cruise ship

A northern Indiana grandfather has insisted that he had no idea a cruise ship window was open when his granddaughter, 18 month old Chloe Wiegand, fell to her death on a cruise ship.

"I didn't realise there wasn't any glass until the absolutely that it was too late," Salvatore Anello told "CBS This Morning" in a story that aired Tuesday.

"When she first fell, I thought she fell in front of me. "There's nothing worse that they could do to me than what's already happened."

"Whether, you know, they find me guilty of whatever or not. It's inconsequential because of what has already happened is so horrible," Anello said.

The grandfather also said that his colour blindness might have impacted whether or not he was able to see the glass.

"Some of the people who've been on the boat have written to me and said, 'David, the windows are tinted, and so it is pretty easy to recognize that it's open,'" CBS News correspondent David Begnaud said.

"I'm colourblind, David," Anello said. "I don't know. I just never saw it. … I've been told that that's a reason that it might have happened."

Anello is scheduled to appear in court in Puerto Rico on December, 17th .

Prince George and Princess Charlotte’s adorable name for their grandfather Prince Charles

While Prince Charles has many important duties to tend to, one of his most treasured roles is being the grandfather to his grandchildren – Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis – and soon-to-be Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan's child.

And just like all families, a grandparent must decide what they want their grandchildren to call them.

However, unlike most families, the heir to the British throne has many more options to choose from and must also consider ‘royal protocol’.

Luckily, five-year-old George and three-year-old Charlotte don’t have to refer to their grandfather as “His Royal Highness Prince Charles Philip Arthur George, Prince of Wales”, as it would be quite a mouthful for them.

Referring to him as “Your Royal Highness” would also be quite formal for the sweet young royals.

So, what do George and Charlotte call their grandfather?

It turns out Prince William and Kate’s two oldest children refer to Prince Charles as ‘Grandpa Wales’, reported The Daily Mail.

While the name is an obvious nod to Charles’ title as the Prince of Wales, the name also holds some family history.

The name stems back to Queen Elizabeth II’s name for her grandfather King George V, which was “Grandpa England”.

It is also believed that George and Charlotte refer to Camilla Parker Bowles as “Ga-Ga” and their great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth II as “Gan-Gan”.

Prince Charles and Camilla have a soft spot for their grandchildren, with the couple reportedly hosting an annual garden party for their grandchildren and their friends every June.

"In 2016 there were about 90 children tucking into sandwiches, cakes and jellies, and roaring around the garden at Clarence House, having tugs of war and watching spellbound as magicians did tricks and entertainers made them laugh," reported Good Housekeeping.

What do your grandchildren call you? What Prince Philip is really like as a grandfather

Queen Elizabeth II may be the head of the Commonwealth, but it’s her husband, Prince Philip who has remained the family’s strongest support.

While it is rare to see the Prince interacting with his grandchildren in a public setting, especially after his retirement, that is not to say that his relationship with his family members isn’t strong. It is said that Prince Philip values his role as a father, grandfather and now great-grandfather above anything else.

Matt Smith, who famously played the role of Prince Philip in the highly acclaimed Netflix series The Crown said that upon meeting Prince William and asking for advice on playing his grandfather, the Duke of Cambridge responded with very few words, saying: “Just one word – legend.”

The royal couple share eight grandchildren together: Peter Phillips, Zara Tindall, Prince William, Prince Harry, Princess Beatrice, Princess Eugenie, Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn.

And while Prince William made his admiration for his grandfather known, he is not the only one to praise him, as Philip’s other grandchildren have also expressed their love for him.

“I think Grandpa is incredible,” said Princess Eugenie in a 2016 documentary, Our Queen at Ninety.

“He really is strong and consistent. He’s been there for all these years, and I think he’s the rock, you know, for all of us.”

Author of The Diana Chronicles, Tina Brown wrote in her book: “A member of the Balmoral staff noted that Prince Philip, who had effectively lost his own mother at the age of 10 when she was committed for three years to an asylum in Switzerland, was brilliantly effective with his grandsons, offering them gruff tenderness and outdoor activities like stalking and hiking to tire them out.”

She also looked back at the time of Princess Diana’s death, and said Prince Philip played a crucial role in the healing of Prince William and Prince Harry in 1997.

According to Brown, Prince William was not in the right emotional state of mind to walk in the cortege at his mother’s funeral, but with the support of his grandfather, he changed his mind.

It is reported that Philip said to William, “If I walk, will you walk with me?” and he did.

In a recent display of affection, Prince Philip decided to attend his grandson, Prince Harry’s wedding to the now Duchess of Sussex in May, even though he went through a hip replacement surgery only a few weeks prior to the occasion.

Earlier in the year, Harper’s Bazaar spoke to a former royal reporter, Philip Dampier, who said: “He has taught them [his grandchildren] many things from his own experiences, telling them not to worry about the press too much as ‘it will be tomorrow’s fish and chip paper’.”

“Philip has made more than 5000 speeches in his royal career and he has tips on how to do them. His door is always open if any of his grandchildren want advice on any subject.”

Sir Anthony Hopkins’ heartbreaking confession: “I don’t have any idea if I’m a grandfather”

Actor Sir Anthony Hopkins sadly shares a lot in common with his latest character, King Lear.

The 80-year-old also has a troubled relationship with his daughter and only child, Abigail, and has not spoken to her in two decades.

Due to their estrangement, Hopkins is unaware if he is a grandfather.

Asked if his daughter, who works as an actress and theatre director, had children, Hopkins said: “I don’t have any idea. People break up. Families split and, you know, ‘get on with your life’. People make choices. I don’t care one way or the other. It is cold. Because life is cold.”

Abigail uses the surname “Harrison” so that she could have a “career on her own terms”,

Harrison was raised by her mother, Hopkins’ first wife, Petronella Barker, after the couple divorced when she was four years old.

Hopkins reconnected with his daughter briefly in the 1990s and she appeared in two of his films, Shadowlands and The Remains Of The Day.

However, they became estranged again to the point where Hopkins now claims he doesn’t know where she lives.

Hopkins accused Hollywood of being “insidious” and toxic and told Radio Times, “Children don’t like their fathers, you don’t have to love each other.

“Look how people feel entitled to this, that and the other, and they can only be surrounded by Yes people. I don’t want to be surrounded by people like that. The 'luvvie' and the kissing cheeks – I can’t stand it. There’s so much hypocrisy.”

Hopkins now lives in California with his third wife, Colombian antiques dealer Stella Arroyave.

“She’s very good for me,” he said.

“My wife worries because I work too hard. Disabled grandfather says winning lottery ruined his life

Most of us can only dream of winning the lottery, but for Daniel Millar, that dream not only came true, it turned into a nightmare.

Millar, a 63-year-old grandfather with long-term health problems from Motherwell, Scotland, won a life-changing £80,000 ($142,000) in September, but by November it was all gone, and a month later, his welfare payments from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) pulled his benefits.

You see, Millar failed to inform the DWP about his windfall, which he spent on a cruise, two holidays, new clothes, home improvements and gifts for his family.

When the department learnt of his newfound wealth, they stopped his benefits. Now, Millar no longer qualifies for income support, housing benefit or council tax reductions.

“It’s a nightmare,” he told The Sun. “I don’t know what I can do and I don’t where to turn to.

“In December, I got a letter from the DWP saying I had to go to an appointment. They then told me I had been reported by the tax office for having £80,000 ($142,000) in my bank. That was true in September but not when I went for the interview. I was £7 ($12) overdrawn.”

Millar now has to survive on a personal independence payment £350 ($623) per month and a pension of £1.08 ($1.92) per week, while his wife and carer Bridget, 62, gets just £62 ($110) every week. They also now have to pay full rent and council tax.

“There are people winning millions of pounds and we just get a bit of luck and all of a sudden, we are punished for it,” Bridget said.

“We helped our neighbour and friends out with some cash. We gave it to our family and have nothing left. We paid for three family holidays – a cruise and two big trips to Benidorm. We got the kitchen and hall decorated and the bathroom and living room are to be done. There is nothing left.

“The DWP have said we aren’t entitled to any money. They say that we have deprived ourselves of capital and don’t qualify for the benefits.”

Tell us in the comments below, can you sympathise with the Millars? Or should Daniel have told the DWP about his lottery wins?

Family reunited with late grandfather’s war badge

When Neil Robertson received an email from two history enthusiasts who were keen to reunite a Returned Soldiers Association badge with his family, he was confused.

"We didn't know about it."

Southland history buff Iain Davidson found the badge, belonging to Neil's grandfather Charles Edwin Robertson, in an antique store.

Davidson contacted Ian Martyn, a Kiwi army veteran who runs the website Medals Reunited New Zealand, a free service that helped reunite war medals with soldiers descendants.

Together the pair looked through service records and archives to identify who the badge belonged to, and to locate any living relatives.

Stamped on the back of the badge was the regimental number – 8/3051, making it fairly easy identify the original owner, Private Robertson, Martyn said.

Charles Robertson was the youngest of three brothers who served in World War I.

Charles and his brother, Private John Christopher Robertson, were both posted to the Western Front, fighting in the battles of Flers and Morval at the Somme.

Charles was reported "missing" on September 27, 1916. He was found with severe gunshot wounds to his back, right arm and right leg and was immediately evacuated to a field hospital in France and then transferred to a hospital in Birmingham, England.

In January 1917, he was declared "no longer fit for war service on account of wounds received in action" and on June 11, 1917, he returned to family home at Browns.

He was the only one who ever came home, his two brothers both died on the battlefield.

Neil said he was excited to be reunited with his grandfather's badge.

Martyn and Davidson had found him and his family through the Auckland Museum online cenotaph, Neil said.

His grandfather had died before he was born. That made the war memorabilia even more important because it was all Neil knew about him.

The family had no idea how the badge found its way into an antique store, Neil said.

The family was in possession of all the other war medals awarded to Charles and his brothers.

"It's a bit of a mystery."

Written by Joanna Griffiths.
