Princess Diana's former lover opens up in rare interview

Army Major James Hewitt, who had a five-year affair with the late Princess Diana from 1986, has spoken about the royal in a rare television interview with Good Morning Britain on Tuesday.

When asked about whether he thinks Diana may have been able to reunite her sons, who have barely spoken in five years, he replied: "I think any mother would be worried and concerned about such a rift, as you put it."

"And she'd do her best to try and get them together."

Major Hewitt, who now spends his time doing aid work in Ukraine, revealed that the last time he had spoken to the late Princess was "just after" her BBC Panorama interview with Martin Bashir in November 1995, during which she admitted to their affair.

He described the conversation as "distant" and admitted that the interview did "create problems" for him from which he was "trying to move on".

After the affair was revealed, Major Hewitt was labelled as a "love rat" by the tabloid media and found his reputation in ruins.

He also said that the interview was "very distressing" for the late Princess, as someone she had trusted had used their connection to make money.

"It was a stitch-up job," he said of the Panorama interview.

"It was appalling of Bashir to [have] inveigled, lied to her, criminal activity, absolutely appalling."

"As I've said, I hate bullies and bullying and arrogant people and I think it's appalling."

Major Hewitt, who was Diana's riding instructor at the time, has previously denied claiming to have been a "father figure" to the princes but has said that he "played with them, swam with them, taught them to ride".

The Duke of Sussex had also addressed the rumours that Major Hewitt was his biological father in his memoir Spare, saying that he felt the rumours were designed to turn him into a "laughing stock".

"One cause of the rumour was Major Hewitt's red hair, but another was sadism," he wrote in his memoir.

Image: Ken McKay/ITV/ Shutterstock Editorial

Protein and healthy ageing: What you need to know if you're over 50

Healthy ageing is the new middle-aged mantra, but where do you start? If you’re over 50, one of the quickest wins in the battle to feeling great and ageing well is to increase your protein intake.

Protein is an essential pro-ageing nutrient; it’s not just for gym junkies. It is vital to combat the serious impacts of ageing.

Protein helps to stop age-related muscle loss and keep bones strong, when combined with exercise. It supports immune function and plays an essential role in maintaining and repairing body tissues and wound healing.

Nutrition scientist Louise Fisher specialises in healthy ageing. She helped Bold Health develop its +50 pro-ageing protein powder and she has recently reviewed the past five years of published scientific research on protein and ageing to determine how much protein you really need to age well.

The science on protein is moving fast. So, we asked Louise Fisher to share the latest insights on the eight most common questions about protein and healthy ageing. Here are her answers:

Does protein help with healthy ageing?

Protein is essential for healthy ageing. It helps keep your bones healthy and most importantly, it helps preserve muscle mass to stay strong.

From as young as 30, you start to lose muscle mass and strength. This decline is barely noticeable at first, but it can accelerate to become a major problem as you get older impacting strength and mobility, increasing the likelihood of falls and even reducing your lifespan.

The good news is you can slow down muscle loss, and even build muscle well into your 90s. Many studies have shown that a higher protein diet, combined with resistance training, is the best way to combat age-related muscle loss and preserve mobility.

If you think of your muscles as a brick wall, the protein makes up the bricks and the resistance exercise is the work to build the wall. You need both to build that muscle.

That’s not the only way protein helps you age well. Every cell in your body contains protein and your body is constantly using protein. Apart from building and maintaining muscles, protein helps repair tissues, forms the antibodies for your immunity system and the blood cells of our circulatory system, makes up many hormones, such as insulin, builds body structures of bones and collagen, and forms the enzymes we need to absorb nutrients from food and use energy.

Why do you need more protein once you turn 50?

The 50s are a good time to reassess your diet because simple changes now can have a big effect on your quality of life. Generally, as you age, you need fewer carbohydrates, because insulin resistance and higher blood glucose levels can become a common problem, while more protein becomes essential for muscle health, bone health and general wellbeing.Protein is made up of amino acids. As you get older, your body needs more amino acids to maintain, repair and build muscle. It also becomes less effective at using the amino acids. This is called anabolic resistance.

As an example, one study revealed men in their 20s could build muscle with 20g of protein, while men in their 70s needed 40g of protein.

Women, especially, need to prioritise protein for optimal bone health, because the drop in oestrogen with menopause increases the risk of developing osteoporosis. As you build and move your muscles, muscle contractions stimulate bone rebuilding. This helps maintain your bone density and reduce the risk of fractures. Stronger muscles help build stronger bones. Higher protein intakes are associated with a lower risk of hip fractures in older adults.

How much protein do you need for healthy ageing?

The latest science, combined with newer methods of assessing protein needs, show most healthy adults over 50 should consume at least 1g-1.2g of protein for each kilo they weigh, to help maintain muscle mass and age well.

The formula is the same, whether you’re male or female. So, as an example a 70kg woman should aim for at least 70-84g of protein a day, and at least 90-108g of protein a day for a 90kg man. If you are doing strength training, as recommended, or other strenuous physical activity, you’ll need even more protein. I recommend at least an extra 20-30g of protein to help with muscle recovery on training days.

The other group that needs higher protein intakes are people who might have a poor diet or those recovering from surgery or illness.

What are the signs that you’re not getting enough protein?

The early warning signs that you are not getting enough protein can be hard to spot. It could be that you are picking up more colds and viruses than normal, or that scratches do not heal as quickly.

Sometimes that muscle weakness can show up in little things, for example it’s harder to open jars because of a small drop in grip strength. If you’re not getting enough protein, your body prioritises protein use for functions that keep you alive, such as repairing tissues, maintaining immunity, making new blood cells, hormones and enzymes.

Building and maintaining muscle becomes a lower priority. On average most Australians do eat enough protein, but for some groups that’s not the case. People over 50 are at real risk of not getting enough protein to thrive.

When is the best time to consume protein for healthy ageing?

It may be best to spread your protein intake across the day, getting at least 20-30 g at main meals. Some studies indicate you absorb protein better this way, rather than relying on one high protein meal. In practice, it makes reaching your protein targets much more achievable.

In my experience, people often miss protein at breakfast, especially if they just have a coffee or tea and toast or a piece of fruit to start the day. For something quick and easy, I’d suggest Greek yoghurt topped with nuts and fruit or high protein cereal with high protein milk.

If you find it hard to eat first thing in the morning, or need something on the go, a protein shake is a great option. If you have been exercising, aim to get that extra 20-30g of protein soon afterwards. Again, a protein shake is often the easiest way to do this.

What are the best sources of protein for people over 50?

To age well, you need to choose the right sources of protein. It’s not just a matter of eating more sausages, bacon or a bigger steak. To help manage risk factors for heart disease such as cholesterol, it is important to have most of your protein from foods that are low in saturated fats.

This means focusing on plant protein and lean animal sources, including lean meat, chicken, fish, legumes (dried and tinned beans, lentils), plant protein powders, tofu, nuts and seeds, reduced fat dairy, and eggs.

What’s the best protein powder for people over 50?

Look for a protein powder that is low in sugar and has added vitamins and minerals, because, as you get older, you need to make every mouthful count. It’s also a better bang for your buck.

On my checklist are vitamin B12, vitamin D, calcium, folate and magnesium. These essential nutrients also support healthy ageing by helping to maintain muscle, bone, and heart health, as well as fight fatigue.

Tip: To avoid that bloated feeling you can sometimes get after drinking a protein shake, choose a protein powder that is lactose-free. Some people find blends with prebiotic fibres and digestive enzymes also help.

Why is eating more protein important if you’re dieting?

When you lose weight, you also generally lose some muscle mass as well. And the greater the rate of weight loss, the greater the loss of lean muscle.

Maintaining protein intakes and resistance training, while trying to lose weight, is important to keep your strength, but not all weight loss methods make it easy to get enough protein.

Intermittent fasting often involves people regularly skipping a meal. If poorly planned, this can lead to a shortfall in protein intake. With the increase in use of GLP-1 agonist drugs, such as Ozempic or Wegovy, for weight loss, we’re also starting to see nutritionists suggest that people prioritise protein intake to reduce the risk of sarcopenia, severe muscle and strength loss.

Using a protein shake that is low in sugar and contains additional vitamins and minerals is a convenient way to get the nutrients you need and minimise muscle loss.

Louise Fisher is a highly qualified nutrition scientist with more than 10 years of experience as a clinical dietitian. Her key areas of expertise are healthy aging, diet, and exercise.

Friends charged hundreds to attend birthday party

A woman has been left horrified after receiving an invitation to her friend’s birthday celebration that she would have to fork out hundreds of dollars to attend.

In a post shared to Reddit, the stunned guest showed a picture of the invite - which was texted to the recipient's phone.

It stated that the celebrations would take place on a Monday between 5:30pm and 7:30pm, writing that friends will be charged $499, while guests of friends will be $250.

The invitee claimed that the party for the friend, who is a member of their local council, is being held at a pub.

“I posted this after receiving the invitation, it's completely wrong but whatever. It's happening, now it's just shaking our heads and making a joke of the whole thing because of how ridiculous it is,” they wrote.

Hundreds of people took to the comments of the Reddit post to express their outrage over the invitation, with many hypothesising that the party is actually a fundraiser.

“Yep. 100 percent political fundraiser. There is a separate real birthday party, even if it is just the spouse and kids,” one person declared.

“Since the friend is a politician my guess is they're treating it like a fundraiser, but still. Jesus,” someone else added.

Many shared their opinions on the extortionate party, with one person writing, “On a Monday afternoon? For $250 an hour? There are no people I’d ever pay that for.”

Others added that the occasion sounds “more like a happy hour” than a party, with another person writing that they “wouldn’t even send a card”.

Wild claim about Hugh Jackman romance

Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster have confirmed their relationship earlier this month, and as the couple ramp up their public appearances together, it has been reported that prior to getting together, they took their respective spouses on double dates.

Jackman and Foster grew closer while starring together in the Broadway musical The Music Man from December 2021 until January 2023.

Now, an insider has revealed to the Daily Mail that Jackman and his ex-wife, Deborra-lee Furness, would enjoy date nights together with Foster and her ex-husband, Ted Griffin.

The source also said that after every performance of their show the pair would share an "uncomfortably" long embrace in front of everyone.

“It was odd,” they continued. “In a way it was uncomfortable. As the entire cast is trying to get to their dressing rooms upstairs, we all had to pass the two of them hugging. They didn’t even hide it! It was a long embrace … and it was weird.”

“I thought she was just a needy actress,” they added.

“That’s the way it appeared to me - the needy actress needed the hug from the big superman.”

This comes after the couple were recently spotted holding hands for a lowkey outing in new pap photos.

In one snap, Jackman appeared to be looking at the cameras while laughing, leading some to believe the pair called the press on themselves.

"They need to stop calling the press on themselves," one user wrote on Instagram.

"Looking right at the camera lol," another said, while a third simply added, "Disappointing."

"Please, stop calling the paparazzi. This is so ridiculous," someone else said.

"This screams closeted PR stunt," another added.

Others thought the pair looked happy, with one saying "they make a beautiful couple".

Jackman and Deborra-Lee Furness announced their separation after 27 years of marriage in September 2023, and a little over a year later, Sutton filed for divorce from husband Ted Griffin after 10 years of marriage.

It was recently reported that the Wolverine actor and Furness are struggling to finalise their divorce, as they didn't have a prenup in place, with rumours that the split may get "messy" as they attempt to divide their massive fortune.

Image: SplashNews.com/ Shutterstock Editorial

Fruit and veg, exercise, frequent bloodletting and more tips on staying healthy from medieval travellers

Megan Cassidy-Welch

Travellers have always faced health hazards when far from home. Medieval people were no exception. Pilgrims, crusaders and others were warned by preachers such as 13th century Jacques de Vitry of “dangers on land, dangers at sea, the dangers of thieves, the dangers of predators, the dangers of battles”.

There were also dangers to health: disease, lack of good nutrition and water, injury, accident and poisoning. Medieval travellers were active and innovative in trying to prevent ill health while away.

Although the adjective “medieval” continues to be used disparagingly to imply backwardness in medical and scientific knowledge, this history of preventive medicine shows us something different.

From good sleep to ‘good’ leeches

One especially interesting set of practical health care instructions for travellers is the De regimine et via itineris et fine peregrinatium (About the regimen and way of the journey for the traveller). The text was composed by Adam of Cremona in about 1227–28 for the German emperor Frederick II, who was about to set out on crusade.

Unedited and surviving in a single manuscript, Adam draws heavily on Ibn Sina’s 11th century Canon of Medicine, used for medical teaching in medieval universities.

Adam advised bloodletting (phlebotomy) should be performed prior to the emperor’s journey and then regularly throughout, depending on the “will and mood” of the stars.

Bloodletting was central to medieval medical practice. It used leeches or sharp knife-like instruments to nick the vein and cause blood to drain from the body. It was performed both preventatively and, in the case of some medieval religious communities, periodically as part of monastic bodily regulation and discipline.

Devoting some 25 chapters of his text to phlebotomy, Adam drew on the idea that bloodletting would regulate the humours (the four fluids thought to make up the body: blood, yellow bile, black bile and phlegm), evacuating “bad” ones and setting the body in balance to prepare for healthy travel.

While the concept of the four humours has since been abandoned by modern medicine, bloodletting and “leech therapy” continue to be performed in some medical settings for specific purposes.

Adam advised all travellers should be mindful of the instruments of bloodletting – especially leeches – while on the road. His writing included warnings to distinguish between leeches: good (round and shiny) and bad (black or blue in colour and found near fetid water).

He also gave careful instruction on how to desalinate water, as well as advice about diet (as close as possible to the traveller’s home diet, with plenty of fruit and vegetables), the importance of rest and adequate sleep, and the importance of regular bathing.

Dysentery was a well known hazard of travel, especially for crusaders, and Adam’s guide reflected all travellers’ wish to avoid it by keeping the digestive system in balance.

Balancing body and spirit

Knowledge about water supplies was especially important for travellers.

One pilgrimage guide informed travellers one of the best sources of water in the holy land was just outside Haifa, in modern-day Israel.

Theodoric’s Guide for the Holy Land reminded travellers there was no water in Jerusalem other than the rainwater collected by inhabitants and stored in cisterns for daily use.

Medieval travellers were also reminded to take particular care of their feet. In 1260, Vincent of Beauvais gave instructions to travellers to use poultices (a dressing for wounds) made of oil, plants and quicksilver (mercury) to prevent and manage blisters – an all too frequent ailment experienced by pilgrims walking long distances.

Adam of Cremona suggested travellers regulate their pace as they walked, especially on unfamiliar and rough roads.

The overall benefit of exercise was generally understood. Preachers such as Jacques de Vitry told his congregations movement made the body healthy both physically and spiritually, so should be undertaken regularly before and during a journey.

Different climates and environments meant encounters with dangerous fauna. The holy land was said to be home to poisonous serpents.

Travellers took with them theriac, an antidote made in part from snake flesh in case of a bite. This would be ingested or smeared on the wound.

Crocodiles in Egypt were also often mentioned as a hazard. There were no antidotes for an attack, but forewarning travellers with knowledge helped them to remain alert.

Medieval travellers did not leave their fate entirely in God’s hands. Even the crusaders took precautionary measures to balance both bodily and spiritual health before and during their journeys.

They confessed sins, sought blessings to protect their property and baggage and carried with them charms and amulets that were thought to ensure “the health of body and protection of the soul”, as one 12th century Italian blessing explained. This “divine prophylaxis” ran alongside more practical care of the physical body – a holistic view of health as corporeal and spiritual.

The actions and remedies available to medieval pilgrims and other travellers may seem limited and perhaps dangerous to modern readers. But like all travellers, medieval people used the knowledge they had and tried hard to maintain good health in sometimes difficult conditions.

The urge to remain well is a very human one, and its long medieval history reminds us that good health has always been carefully managed through prevention just as much as cure.

Megan Cassidy-Welch, Professor of History and Dean of Research Strategy

This article is republished from The Conversation under a Creative Commons license. Hugh Jackman and Deborra-Lee Furness rumoured to face "messy" divorce

Hugh Jackman and Deborra-Lee Furness have yet to file for divorce, according to the Daily Mail.

Insiders told the publication that their split could get "messy" as the former couple struggle to divide their estimated $250 million fortune.

They are now planning to file in New York "in the next couple of weeks."

"One of the biggest reasons why they haven’t yet filed is that they never had a prenup," the source told the Daily Mail.

"When they got married, they thought it would be forever. Who doesn’t? At the time, neither of them expected Hugh’s career to get as enormous as it has.

"Because there was no prenup, and he made a fortune during their marriage, this divorce is not going to be cut and dry. It may even get messy because the stakes are high.

"A lot of moving parts need to be worked out and there is a huge amount of money involved.

The insider insisted that the couple both want to "make this as easy as possible," but after three decades together and Jackman's huge rise to fame, "it’s not quite that easy."

Furness and Jackman announced their split in September 2023, and not long after, rumours of the Wolverine actor's new relationship with Broadway co-star Sutton Foster started emerging, with the pair finally confirming their romance last week.

His new relationship has reportedly added to the growing tension between Jackman and Furness, who had struggled with "resentment and an imbalance of power" towards the end of their marriage.

The division of assets, including their properties in East Hampton, New York, Sydney, and Manhattan, is also complicated by the fact that they are "no longer friends".

"Hugh and Deborra-Lee are cordial to each other, but they are no longer friends," the insider said.

"They put their differences aside to co-parent and he cares a lot about is children."

The insider clarified that there was no overlap with Jackman and Furness by the time he started dating Foster.

Just a few days ago, Furness said that she was relieved to see images of Jackman and Foster as it finally confirmed her "suspicions" that the pair would get together.

Image: Guerin Charles/ABACA/ Shutterstock Editorial

Young influencer's "sick act" while 80-year-old boyfriend is hospitalised

Social media users have been left horrified by a young influencer's lack of sympathy after she shared a "disturbing" video of herself dancing next to her elderly boyfriend's hospital bed.

Bronwin Aurora, 22, filmed herself doing a trending TikTok dance and boasting about being included in her 80-year-old boyfriend's will, dancing around the elderly man who was lying in his hospital bed surrounded by medical equipment.

“Guys, I got on the will, should I pull the plug?” she captioned the clip.

The video gained nearly half a million views, and while some thought it might be satirical, others expressed their concern and outrage.

“Love your care for humanity," one commented sarcastically.

“I’m going to cry. I hope he gives everything to his kids," another wrote.

“A prelude to an episode of Law and Order,” commented a third.

Some even suggested it was "elder abuse", while many called her out for the "sickening" and "outrageous" act calling it "a new low".

The 22-year-old appears to have a "sugar daddy" arrangement with the man, who often buys her extravagant gifts, including a $20k Cartier bracelet, among other things.

While the influencer did not disclose her boyfriend's medical condition, she has been documenting his health across multiple posts on social media, with the most recent one showing him in a wheelchair.

In one video she even told fans that she "loves" him and doesn't shy away from sharing details of her relationship online.

Images: TikTok

While weddings are joyous occasions filled with love and happiness, guests can often be left feeling perplexed over unspoken rules and expectations for what is expected at a loved one’s big day.

Wedding etiquette expert Angela DeMaio has shared the five most common faux pas guests can be guilty of committing at a wedding, and revealed how to avoid them.

Ignoring seating arrangements

While it might seem like not a big deal to switch seats or sit wherever you feel comfortable, this can disrupt the couple's carefully planned arrangements that are in place for a reason.

DeMaio said, “Seating arrangements are often crafted with thought, considering relationships and group dynamics.”

According to the expert, ignoring seating plans can disturb the balance the couple has tried to create, so to respect the newlywed’s efforts, it's important to be mindful of where each guest is seated.

Getting in the way of photographers

It’s the photographer’s job to capture the heartfelt moments at a wedding, and blocking the shot or getting in the way can have major consequences.

According to DeMaio, guests should especially avoid stepping into the aisle during the processional or standing in the way of key moments, such as the couple's first dance.

Being patient and respectful of the photographer's space ensures the couple gets the perfect shots without disruption.

Going too hard at an open bar

While many guests look forward to partaking in free drinks at an open bar during a wedding ceremony, it’s important to drink in moderation.

DeMaio warned guests to pace themselves with water in between alcoholic beverages, as no one wants to be remembered as the guest who got embarrassingly drunk.

“Weddings are joyous occasions, but they're not the time for drunken antics or behaviour that distracts from the couple's special day,” she said.

Not saying goodbye to the couple

As a wedding night winds down, it's easy to be tempted by an Irish goodbye, or just leaving the event without doing the goodbye rounds.

However, failing to acknowledge the couple before leaving can come across as rude or dismissive, as leaving without acknowledging the couple can leave them wondering if you truly valued the celebration.

DeMaio suggested, “If possible, thank the bride and groom in person for the invitation, as it's a small gesture that goes a long way.”

Posting photos online without permission

In the golden age of social media, it's tempting to share every moment of the wedding, but this can lead to unintended consequences.

As someone’s wedding is a deeply personal event, most couples prefer to have control over when and how their wedding photos are shared.

According to DeMaio, it's crucial for guests to wait until the couple has posted their own photographs before sharing anything, or asking for explicit permission to post photos online.

Elle Macpherson reveals the reason for her divorce

Elle Macpherson has revealed how her controversial cancer treatment played a major part in her divorce from billionaire Jeffrey Soffer.

The supermodel made the bombshell claim in her new memoir, Elle: Life, Lessons and Learning to Trust Yourself, sharing how she was still married to Soffer in 2017 when she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Macpherson refused chemotherapy from 32 doctors, revealing that her decision took a toll on her marriage.

“My diagnosis of breast cancer, followed by my final choice of Dr C’s holistic approach to recovery… was not one that Jeff could trust or feel at ease about,” she candidly wrote.

“And really this process was the straw that broke the camel’s back… it opened up the floodgates and everything changed,” she emotionally added. “Our marriage was over and we both knew it.”

Macpherson and Soffer split that year after four years of marriage.

Earlier this year, Macpherson was widely slammed after revealing that she did not have chemotherapy after being diagnosed HER2-positive oestrogen receptive intraductal carcinoma: a type of breast cancer characterised by a higher level of a protein that can help breast cells multiply quickly.

The 60-year-old said that her former husband wasn't the only one who didn't agree with her health choices, sharing that she didn't tell her family about her plans to forgo traditional treatment.

“I didn’t tell my family in Oz, not even my parents,” she stated of her cancer diagnosis in her memoir. “I didn’t want to put them in a situation where they were worrying from afar and I knew that my choices were different from what they may have imagined was good for me.”

“The hardest part was making the decision on how to heal,” she added. “The saddest part was the lack of understanding from people close to me.”

Woman horrified after man brings his mother to first date

A woman has been left stunned after her crush invited his mother to infiltrate their first date.

The young woman took to Reddit to recall the mortifying moment, and to ask users if she was out of line by leaving the awkward date.

The 23-year-old began the story by explaining how she matched with a 25-year-old man, who she referred to as Jake, on the dating app Hinge.

She explained that the couple had been “chatting for a few weeks, and he seemed like a solid guy — funny, good taste in music, and even remembered I loved Italian food.”

“He planned the date at this nice little spot in Dallas, which I thought was sweet,” she added.

She continued, “I show up, and everything's fine at first. He's already there, we hug, and he even complimented my outfit.”

“But like five minutes after I sit down, this older woman walks in. Jake stands up, waves her over, and says, ‘This is my mom!’ 'I thought I misheard him for a second.”

After he introduced his mother to his date, she pulled up a chair and began asking the 23-year-old a slew of invasive questions.

“She sits down at the table, all casual, and starts introducing herself to me like this is normal. Meanwhile, I'm sitting there, trying to figure out if I'm being pranked. I kind of laugh nervously and say, ‘Oh, I didn't know you were bringing anyone,’ and he goes, ‘Oh, she just wanted to meet you. Don't worry—it's not a big deal’.”

“But it was a big deal because she didn't just stop by to say hi — she ordered wine and stayed. The whole time, she's asking me these personal questions about my job, my family, even if I want kids someday.”

“It was like an interview, not a date. Jake barely said anything. He just smiled and kept nodding like this was all normal,” she revealed.

The woman then shared that after 20 minutes of the awkward encounter, she decided to leave, and texted Jake that same evening to say she didn’t want to go on another date.

She said, “I couldn't take it anymore. I said I wasn't feeling great and needed to leave. I texted him later, saying I didn't think it would work out and wished him well.”

Although she thought she did the right thing, she began doubting her decision and questioned if she was in the wrong.

The 23-year-old concluded the post by asking, '”Now I feel kind of bad. My roommate says I did the right thing because honestly, who brings their mom to a first date? But my coworker said it was rude to just leave and that maybe his mom was just super close to him or nervous for him or whatever. Was I wrong for walking out?”

Reddit users flocked to the comments section and ran to her defence as they slammed Jake for bringing his mother along on the date.

One person said, “It's absurd that he would bring her. Unless she needs constant supervision due to some health issue. That is a very strange dynamic. You did what most anyone else would have done. Best of luck.”

Readers response: What’s the best advice you’ve received on staying healthy as you age?

We asked our readers what the best advice they’ve received on staying healthy as you age is, and the response was overwhelming. Here's what they said.

Fred Pilcher - Don't smoke. That's the most important advice you're likely to get. If you do smoke, quit now. Today. I've lost parents and friends to lung cancer and emphysema - both terrible ways to go. (I say this as a former two pack a day addict.)

Kate Caddey - Stay as fit as you can. Walk, do the stretch, balance and dance offerings. Travel the slightly harder way with ups and downs included. Stay curious about people you meet and about everything in general. Never stop learning.

Marie Jones - Keep laughing.

Gloria Hickey - Keep active, but wish I had been told to have my B12 added to yearly blood work too.

Peter Connolly - Best advice I got was "Whatever you do, go out with a bang. There is absolutely no point in lying in bed in a hospital, dying of nothing!"

Terry Dolman - Enjoy being happy. It takes more energy to be grumpy than smile. Plus, a good Friend in Vietnam now said "don't carry the past plus a drink of whisky a day."

Heather Dixon - Keep busy.

Lydia Poli - Enjoy the ride while you can!

Marlene Cochrane - Don't stop moving. Both physically and mentally.

Karen Ambrose - Keep dancing!
