The Spirit of Discovery cruise ship was forced to turn back after around 100 passengers were injured during a massive storm. Cruise company Saga have said that most of the injuries were minor, but five people had to be taken to hospital when the ship returned to England on Tuesday local time. One passenger told BBC News that a few passengers "feared for their lives", when the storm hit the ship in the Bay of Biscay, off the French coast. "People were writing texts to their loved ones in case we capsized," they added. "The tone of voice in our captain... he was physically scared. We had crew crying. We had many passengers in awful states of fear." The passenger also claimed that that injuries included broken bones and cuts, with reports of furniture flying around and people being knocked off their feet, as the ship stopped moving and veered dramatically to one side as part of its safety manoeuvre. Another passenger, 75-year-old Jan Bendall, told the BBC that she and her husband were "holding on for dear life", and that it was overall a frightening experience. "It was quite frightening, I'm not somebody who frightens easily," Bendall said. "We were lucky - we're quite able-bodied, but I think some of the older people and people in their own cabins were quite worried," she added. The ship itself holds almost 1000 passengers and holds cruises for people over 50. Saga told the BBC that there had been "very limited" damage and the ship had "remained safe at all times." "While the weather is clearly beyond our control, we want to offer our sincere apologies to all those affected who are now safely on their way home in calmer seas," the spokesperson said. Harry Styles has become the latest victim of “object throwing culture” at his concert, after the British pop star was hit in the eye by a flying item. The 29-year-old was in Vienna, Austria, as his years-long Love on Tour begins to wrap up, singing to a sold out crowd of 50,000 strong. During his performance, Styles was prancing around the stage when a flying object hit him directly in the eye. Dick Van Dyke injured in car crash

Dick Van Dyke has suffered "minor injuries" after being involved in a car crash in California. The 97-year-old actor's silver Lexus collided with a gate in Malibu on Wednesday, as police officers were called to the scene of the collision. A spokesman for the Malibu Police Department confirmed to CNN that Van Dyke had suffered "minor injuries" in the crash. Other reports claim the actor was bleeding from the nose and mouth after the incident, as he was reportedly treated by paramedics at the scene, but not taken to hospital. The crash comes just weeks after Van Dyke, who is preparing to celebrate his 98th birthday, became the oldest contestant to appear on The Masked Singer. On the show, Van Dyke performed Frank Sinatra's When You're Smiling, which his wife, Arlene Silver, helped him pick. "They wanted me to do something current and I know nothing from rock," Van Dyke told People at the time. "So we picked out one which typifies me. She's the one that came up with it and I liked the song, too." 4 tips for looking after an injured partner

As hard as it can be to recover from an injury yourself, it can be just as difficult to watch your partner go through the same pain. Make your home more accessible If your partner’s injury affects their strength or ability to walk, you need to take a good look at your home and see what you can do to make mobility easier. Removing possible obstructions like plants and pieces of furniture is a good way to start. If you have any rugs, temporarily move them or at the very least ensure they are stuck down securely and won’t be able to trip anyone up. 2. Communicate Open up the path for communication with your partner and encourage them not to suppress what they’re feeling. People’s pride often prevents them from admitting they’re in pain, so make sure your partner knows how important it is to you that they are open and honest throughout their recovery. Plus, it’s always easier when you have a shoulder to cry on or someone to vent to. 3. Keep them busy It’s easy for formerly active people to slip into depression when suddenly finding themselves stuck indoors. Therefore, it’s just as essential to look after their mental health as it is their physical health. Suggest ways they can keep themselves occupied and productive. Why not learn a language? There are hundreds of free educational apps and resources out there to keep your partner busy and maybe even teach them a new skill. 4. Treatment Stubborn partners can be a real pain to treat. First you have to get them to the doctor, then you have to make sure they’re actually going through with the treatment. Mass shooting in Copenhagen claims several lives, injures others

Several people have been killed and others have been wounded after a gunman opened fire in a shopping centre in Copenhagen, Denmark. Terrified shoppers ran for safety as the gunman wielded a “hunting rifle” at Field’s Shopping Mall on Sunday afternoon local time, with images showing parents carrying their children as they fled. Danish police said the suspected gunman, a 22-year-old Danish man, was detained near the mall, adding that police have undertaken a massive search operation in the local Zealand region to determine whether he had accomplices. “There are several injured, and what we also know now is that there are several dead,” police inspector Soren Thomassen, head of the Copenhagen police operations unit, said at a press conference on Sunday evening. Thomassen added that a motive of “terrorism” couldn’t be ruled out as yet. “We investigate it as an act, where we can’t exclude, that it’s terror,” he said. Suddenly there was just chaos everywhere. “We were sitting and going to eat and suddenly we could see people running. “Then we first thought, ‘why do people run?’ But then we could hear the shots.” Her friend, Astrid Kofoed Jørgensen, added: “Everyone in the restaurant was shown out into the kitchen, and then when we saw out there we could hear three or four shots.” Other witnesses who saw the gunman described him as a 1.8-metre-tall man with a hunting rifle. At around 5.30pm local time, roads around the shopping centre were blocked, the nearby subway was stopped and a helicopter was flying overhead, according to an AFP correspondent on the scene. Heavily armed police officers kept onlookers back from the area, preventing locals from returning to their homes. Singer Harry Styles, due to perform at a concert venue less than two kilometres from the shopping centre that evening, took to Snapchat to share his shock at the incident. “My team and I pray for everyone involved in the Copenhagen shopping mall shooting. I am shocked,” he wrote. After announcing the show would “proceed as planned” shortly after the shooting, the organiser later announced the show’s cancellation. Five dead and dozens injured after stadium collapses during Colombian bullfight

Dozens have been injured and at least five people have died during a bullfight in Colombia after the improvised wooden stadium collapsed. Footage shows the stands crumbling during a “correlaja”, an event where spectators jump into the ring to run alongside the bulls, in El Espina in Tolima as part of the annual San Juan and San Pedro festivities, per <a href="https://www.9news.com.au/world/colombia-stadium-collapse-multiple-fatalities-after-improvised-venue-crumples-during-bull-fight/3256acdc-3af3-4226-b9ea-0afdc1dc5e5a" target="_blank" rel="noopener">9News</a>. Four people injured in stabbing frenzy

Four members of the public have been horrifically stabbed in what police have described as an “isolated” incident. The alleged offender randomly stopped four people in Murrays Bay on Auckland's North Shore about 11.18am on Thursday before stabbing them with “quite a large knife”. Another member of the public stepped in and stopped the alleged attacker with a clutch before police apprehended him. Luckily, none of the victims were severely injured but are being treated in hospital. Waitematā district commander Superintendent Naila Hassan commended the random person’s efforts, saying it could have been “a lot worse”. "This was an isolated incident," she said. "This offender was on the move, he was on foot, it started in Murrays Bay [where he stabbed members of the public], and he continued to walk through to Mairangi Bay. "A number of members of the public were following him and eventually one of them intervened. "It could've been a lot worse and that's why I really need to acknowledge the bravery of those members of the public that intervened to bring this to a conclusion." Superintendent Hassan gave a special shoutout to the members of the public who helped prevent the situation from getting any worse. "I really need to acknowledge the bravery of the members of the public who intervened," she said. A thank you to the public was also released on the North Shore, Rodney & West Auckland Police Facebook page. “We would like to acknowledge members of our community for their actions, who put aside their own personal safety to get involved in the events earlier today,” the statement read. “Whilst Police generally discourage intervening, we greatly appreciated their efforts today which undoubtedly prevented further harm. “We also want to thank those who called emergency services. “Understandably the community will be shaken by what has occurred today and I would like to reassure them that this was an isolated incident and we have the person responsible in custody. “There will be an increased Police presence across the community as a result of what has occurred. “We would like to thank the community for their patience as scene examinations and area canvases taking place.” The alleged attacker remains in North Shore Hospital under police guard where he is being treated for his injuries. Multiple people found dead or injured over worrying TikTok trend

A couple from Wisconsin USA have been electrocuted after attempting a popular but dangerous wood-burning technique. The “fractal burning” technique creates lightning-like etchings by using jumper cables and disassembled microwave oven parts to run high-voltage electricity through a piece of wood soaked in a chemical solution. Some may think this sounds like a lot of effort for a DIY project however, the technique is gaining popularity through viral videos on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, but woodworking experts have warned that it is extremely dangerous and can be deadly. Tanya Rodriguez, 44, and James Carolfi, 52, were found dead in a house fire on April the 6th. Their bodies were discovered in the garage of their home in Marathon County, Wisconsin. The couple had died before the fire started, and the Marathon County Sheriff’s Office initially described the cause of their deaths and the fire as “suspicious”. The mysterious circumstances prompted weeks of arson and homicide investigation and the sheriff’s office, fire marshals and the Wisconsin State Crime Laboratory found that Rodriguez and Carolfi died by accidental electrocution when they attempted the dangerous wood-burning technique. The couple used a disassembled microwave oven for a power supply. Authorities believe the equipment that caused the electrocutions also caused the fire, which started in the garage before it spread. Some fractal burning art is crafted by professionals with experience as electricians and access to proper equipment. But many attempting the popular project take apart microwaves or car batteries to use as power sources. Even with professional equipment there is still a risk. At least 33 people have died from fractal burning attempts since 2016 and while the patterns created by fractal burning are “very pretty, quite frankly, the dangers of the craft cannot be ignored.” Image: Getty

Woman left seriously injured in ALDI car park brawl

A woman is recovering after being injured in a violent mass brawl at a supermarket car park. Police say an argument that turned violent erupted in an ALDI car park off Garratt Way, Manchester, at 4 am on Sunday. Officers found nearly 50 people scattered across the lot and a woman in her 30s left seriously injured. It is alleged she was hit by a car, however her injuries are not life-threatening. No arrests have been made but police who live in the area claim they heard screams coming from the car park. One resident said he was woken up by loud noises as he tried to sleep. "I heard shouting and screaming,” he recounted. “I just thought it was normal things but then the screaming didn’t stop. I saw a lot of people in the parking lot screaming at each other." The ALDI store remained open to shoppers the following morning however the car park was taped off as investigators searched the scene. “Police were called at 4 am this morning (Sunday 15 August) to a report of a large fight involving nearly 50 people at a car park off Garratt Way, Manchester,” a statement from police said "On officers' arrival, the group dispersed and a woman in her 30s was being treated in an ambulance. It is believed a vehicle had collided with her, and she suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries. "No arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing."

Robert De Niro seriously injured on set of new movie

Robert De Niro is recovering after suffering a serious injury while filming. De Niro, 77, hurt one of his quad muscles while on the set of Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon in Oklahoma. “I tore my quad somehow … [It was] just a simple stepping over something and I just went down,” De Niro said in an interview with <a href="https://www.indiewire.com/2021/05/robert-de-niro-leg-injury-martin-scorsese-flower-moon-1234637854/">IndieWire</a>. “The pain was excruciating and now I have to get it fixed. But it happens, especially when you get older; you have to be prepared for unexpected things.” Luckily, the actor clarified that his injury was “manageable”. De Niro went on to describe his role in the Scorcese film as a “sedentary” one. “I don’t move around a lot, thank god. So we’ll manage,” he said. According to <a href="https://people.com/movies/robert-de-niro-leg-injury-update-pain-was-excruciating/">People</a> magazine, De Niro returned to New York to receive medical treatment for the injury on Thursday. A representative for the actor reportedly told the magazine De Niro’s departure “will not affect production as he was not scheduled to film again for another three weeks.” De Niro will play cattleman William Hale alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, who will play Ernest Burkhart, Hale’s nephew. The movie, set in 1920s Oklahoma, is currently being produced by AppleTV+. Based on the nonfiction book written by journalist David Grann, the film will dive into the serial murders of the Osage Nation that sparked a “major investigation involving J. Madeleine McCann suspect injured while awaiting trial

A suspect involved in the disappearance of the British toddler who vanished from a Portugese holiday resort 13 years ago has suffered two broken ribs in an incident at a German court. Christian Brueckner is serving time on a drug conviction and was taken to Braunschweig state court on Monday for a hearing on that case. Court spokeswoman Jessica Knab-Henrichs told The Associated Press that he was treated in hospital for two broken ribs. He was then returned to the court where the hearing was carried out. While details have not been released yet, the spokeswoman says the incident is under investigation. Brueckner is a suspect in the disappearence of Madeleine but prosecutors say they do not have enough evidence to hold him on the McCann case alone. Brueckner will finish serving his drug trafficking charge in January, but he has been convicted in of the 2005 rape of a 72-year-old American woman in Portugal and sentenced to another seven years. That conviction is under appeal. McCann was 3 at the time of her 2007 disappearance from an apartment while vacationing with her parents and siblings in the seaside town of Praia da Luz in Portugal's Algarve region. German authorities in June said they had identified the 43-year-old German citizen as a suspect in the case and were looking into him on suspicion of murder.

Knitters unite to sew pouches for injured wildlife

Knitters around the world are lending their hand to support native wildlife caught up in the Australian bushfires. <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-australia-50951043">More than 6.3 million hectares</a> of bush, forest and parks have been burned in this bushfire season, killing an estimated billion of animals. The Animal Rescue Collective Craft Guild said the organisation’s call for volunteers had been met with an outpouring of offers to make pouches, wraps, blankets and beddings for injured and orphaned animals. Since its establishment in April, the guild’s <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/arfsncrafts/">Facebook group</a> has accumulated more than 160,000 members. “It’s been going crazy,” Belinda Orellana, a founding member of the Queensland-based guild, told <a rel="noopener" href="https://10daily.com.au/news/a200107szpkb/the-world-is-knitting-clothes-for-australias-injured-wildlife-and-darn-the-pics-are-cute-20200107" target="_blank">Reuters</a>. “Our group creates and supplies items to rescue groups and carers around the country who take in and care for the wildlife.” Donations have come in from the United States, Britain, Hong Kong, France and Germany. 20 people injured after violent volcano eruption off New Zealand coast

An eruption from a volcano on White Island in New Zealand’s Bay of Plenty has taken course, with unconfirmed reports of up to 20 people injured. <a rel="noopener" href="https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=12292240" target="_blank">The New Zealand Herald</a> reported rescue helicopters are on the way to the island and it is understood up to 100 people may have been on the island at the time of its disastrous eruption. White Island Tours boats were reportedly near the island. A level four alert has been raised – it is the second highest rating meaning there is an eruption hazard on and near the volcano. The disturbing peeing act that injured 4 people

Four people have been injured on a boat after a man urinated on them from a bridge overhead. The four were passengers on a tour boat travelling along the Spree in Berlin on Friday when the man began to urinate. Upon attempting to avoid the pee leaking from the overhead bridge, they jumped up and hit their heads. The Berlin Fire department took to Twitter to share that the injured were transported to hospital with head lacerations. The man is yet to be caught with the police labelling his behaviour as “abnormal” according to German broadcaster Deutsche Welle. The accused faces assault charges.

The Norwegian Cruise Liner which tilted on a “45-degree angle,” on Sunday night, according to one cruiser, is blaming the incident on a strong, sudden gust of wind. The Norwegian Escape began slanting over at roughly midnight, shocking passengers who were enjoying their trip in the piano bar. “Just before midnight on Sunday, March 3, Norwegian Escape encountered unexpected weather in the form of a sudden, extreme gust of wind, estimated at 100 knots, which resulted in the ship heeling to the port side,” the cruise line wrote in a Twitter post. “Several injuries were reported, and those guests and crew received immediate attention or are being treated by the ship’s medical staff,” the statement continued. <iframe src="https://www.facebook.com/plugins/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fjunmar.beltrano%2Fposts%2F10213907759358579&width=500" width="500" height="681" style="border: none; overflow: hidden;" scrolling="no" frameborder="0" allowtransparency="true" allow="encrypted-media"></iframe> The ship, which is capable of carrying over 6,000 people, says it was pushed suddenly by a gust of wind about 185km – a burst similar to that of a wind from a Category 3 hurricane. Four injured after attempted terror attack in New York

Witnesses have described terrifying scene of people “running for their lives” after a man detonated a homemade bomb inside the New York subway system during Monday morning rush hour. Authorities called the explosion in the terminal at 42nd Street and Eighth Avenue an "attempted terrorist attack" and police identified the suspect in custody as Akayed Ullah, 27. He told CNN the man “wound up hurting himself” when the device partially detonated in the passageway. The New York Police Department said Akayed was in custody at Bellevue Hospital in a serious condition suffering burns and lacerations to his hands and abdomen. Three people suffered minor, “non-life-threatening” injuries including ringing in their ears n, the New York Fire Department confirmed. One of the injured was a Port Authority police officer.

Severe turbulence leaves passengers injured

At least 27 people have been injured on an Aeroflot flight from Moscow to Bangkok when the plane hit severe turbulence shortly before landing after midnight. Passenger phone footage shows people being slammed into the plane’s ceiling, injured passengers on the floor and oxygen masks hanging down. Passenger Rostik Rusev shared a video on his Instagram, with the caption: “I was on a plane going from Moscow to Bangkok, out of nowhere we hit turbulence, that was so bad that it was throwing people around like crazy. “Blood everywhere, people with broken bones, noses, open fractures, baby’s with head injuries, I can keep going and going. Thank God we are alive! I really hope @aeroflot @aeroflotrus will do right by everybody! I can honestly say I have never been so scared in my life before. #aeroflot #emergency. The Russian embassy in Thailand confirmed 24 of the injured were Russian nationals. Of the 24, 15 of them were taken to a Bangkok hospital for treatment. The other three injured were from Thailand. “All the injured were sent to a local hospital with injuries of a different kind of severity, mainly fractures and bruises,” the embassy said. “The reasons behind the injures was that some of the passengers had not had their seatbelts fastened.” Three people needed surgery, two for leg fractures and one for broken ribs.

Tom Hanks During filming of Cast Away, Tom’s body was put to the test after having to lose 50 pounds to accurately play his character. Tom suffered a leg cut that swelled for two weeks and when he went to the hospital, they told him it was a life-threatening staph infection. 2. George Clooney One of our all-time favourites actors, George was filming a torture scene for Syriana in 2005 when he was hurt and suffered a back injury. He was in excruciating pain but the doctors were unable to diagnose what was wrong. Lisa Kudrow’s brother, a neurologist, found out that he was leaking spinal fluid. He then received proper treatment. The pain was so bad that the actor contemplated suicide. 3. Sylvester Stallone We know Sylvester is an actor whose films require him to push his body to the limits. Sylvester broke multiple ribs in a stunt for The Expendable film. In Rocky IV, Sylvester insisted that Dolph Lundgren should actually spar with him. Lundgren hit him with such force that Stallone’s heart swelled and he had to have a hospital stay. 4. Jackie Chan Jackie performs his own stunts and therefore has endured countless injuries including broken bones, torn ligaments and damaging his spine. While filming Armour of God II, he performed a stunt that required him to jump from a slope into a tree. However, he missed and fell into the ground and had to have brain surgery. The incident sent a piece of skull into his brain and he still has a metal plate in his head because of it. 5. Michael J. Fox When Michael was in Back to the Future Part III, a stunt required him to be hanged by Mad Dog Tannen. In rehearsals, Michael would protect his throat but when they were filming he couldn’t do that. Michael lost consciousness during the scene until the crew realised that he wasn’t acting but was genuinely being suffocated.
