Why Lisa Marie Presley kept son's body at home for two months after his death

Lisa Marie Presley was so heartbroken by the loss of her only son, Benjamin Keough, at just 27-years-old in 2020, that she kept his body in her home for two months after his death.

The star revealed this in her memoir From Here to the Great Unknown, which was finished by her daughter Riley Keough after the 54-year-old’s death in January 2023, according to Page Six.

In the book, Lisa Marie opened up about the extent of her grief, saying that she had to force herself to "fight" to stay alive for her remaining children, and one of the ways she coped was not saying goodbye to Benjamin right away.

“My house has a separate casitas bedroom and I kept Ben Ben in there for two months. There is no law in the state of California that you have to bury someone immediately,” Lisa Marie wrote.

“I found a very empathetic funeral homeowner. I told her that having my dad in the house after he died was incredibly helpful because I could go and spend time with him and talk to him. She said, ‘We’ll bring Ben Ben to you.’”

The room was kept at around 12 degrees celsius to preserve his body, and the star continued saying that she felt “fortunate that there was a way that I could still parent him, delay it a bit longer so that I could become okay with laying him to rest.”

Another reason why she decided to keep his body was because she wasn't sure whether to bury him in Hawaii or at Graceland, the Memphis estate where Elvis died and is buried.

At one point, Riley and Lisa Marie decided to honour Benjamin by getting matching tattoos of his name, which was inscribed in the same place where Benjamin had his tattoos.

Riley recalled the odd moment Lisa Marie brought in the tattoo artist into her home.

“Lisa Marie Presley had just asked this poor man to look at the body of her dead son, which happened to be right next to us in the casitas. I’ve had an extremely absurd life, but this moment is in the top five," Riley wrote in the memoir.

Lisa Marie acknowledged that it was odd, and soon after the tattoo day, they "got the vibe" that Benjamin wanted to be laid to rest.

“Even my mum said that she could feel him talking to her, saying ‘This is insane, Mum, what are you doing? What the f**k!”

The family held a funeral for Benjamin in Malibu, and he was buried at Graceland alongside Elvis, and now Lisa Marie as well.

Image: Copetti/Photofab/ Shutterstock Editorial

Readers response: What’s the longest friendship you’ve had, and what has kept it strong?

When it comes. to friendships, it has long been said that people come into your life for a season, a reason or a lifetime.

These "lifetime" relationships are often the friends we made when we were young, who have been by our side through thick and thin.

We asked our readers what their longest friendships have been and what made them so strong, and the response was overwhelming. Here's what they said.

Linda Cox - 72 years. We were toddlers when we met and even though we have lived on opposite sides of the planet for the last 50 years, we are still best friends.

Rae Meihuizen - 62 years. We met as a school friend of my cousin. He was my best man at my wedding and still a very dear friend to this day.

Jennie Harley - My friend from school in Sydney living in same street. Although we live a long way apart & haven’t actually seen each other in many years, our phone calls, although sometimes we are both very slack, the relationship is always the same. No explaining things from the past just mutual understanding and love.

Marilyn Carter - 60 years. We all met doing our hairdressing apprenticeship. We love each other so much and do anything for each and every one of us.

Guila Kelly - Met at age 4 in prekinder. Born 2 weeks apart, both turn 80 shortly. Never a cross word.

Marjorie Smith - 82 years. Met at school in NZ when we were 10 years old. Still friends but in different countries. My friend was one of our bridesmaids in 1954.

Margaret Inglis - 74 years. Our mums were next to each other in hospital when we were born. I'm a day older, but even when my parents moved, Jennie and I would spend a few days each school holidays at each other's places. In 1969 I moved to Australia (from NZ) and we STILL catch up via FB etc. Went back to NZ for a few days about 7 years ago, yep, met up again and it was like we'd never been apart.

Ros Bieg - 64yrs. Unconditional friendship and sooo many memories.

Margaret Woodhouse - 68 years. We met at 12 and are 80 this year. Both totally different in personality, but tolerant of the differences and respect each other’s beliefs. Live in different states in Australia but FaceTime twice a week and spend 3-4 weeks together every year.

Woman “bullied” on plane over budget seating trick

A young woman has recalled a flight from hell when she was “bullied” by a couple who were trying to utilise a seating hack that went viral on TikTok.

The solo traveller took to Reddit to recount the story and ask social media users if she was in the wrong for her action.

The woman began by saying she usually pays more to select her plane seat ahead of time, but a medical emergency on another plane had her waiting on standby and left with no option other than to sit in a middle seat.

When she was finally able to board, she was greeted by a couple who had purchased both the window and aisle seats in a bid to have more space, utilising a travel “trick” that has been popular on TikTok.

The method, which has been dubbed the 'poor man's business class', usually leaves travellers with an empty middle seat and more space, and few travellers opt to pick a middle seat.

“When I got to my row the man and woman were chatting and sharing a snack... it was obvious they were together. I mentioned to the man that I'm in the middle, and he got up to let me in,” the unsuspecting traveller wrote on Reddit.

“I asked them if they would prefer to sit together, I said I was totally okay with that. The woman reacted rudely to this and said ‘you're not supposed to be sitting here anyway’.”

After noticing how the plane was full, she offered to show the pair her new ticket with the correct seat number on it.

“She flicked her hand at my ticket and made a disgusted sound. I offered again if they wanted to sit together to which she didn't reply, her partner said it's okay and... made some small talk,” she continued.

The man’s girlfriend then interrupted their conversation to ask,”'Did you use one of those third party websites to book your flight? It's so frustrating when people cheap out to inconvenience others.”

The American woman explained that she had booked her flight directly and she had been placed on standby like everyone else and didn't choose the middle seat - she was assigned it.

She then tried to keep the peace by refusing to engage with the furious woman.

“I was so done with her attitude, I put my headphones on and attempted to do my own thing,” she explained.

But the “entitled” girlfriend wasn't letting it go, as the woman explained, “This woman kept reaching over me and tapping her partner and trying to talk to him in a way that was super intrusive.”

“I could tell even her partner was trying to engage her less so that she would hopefully stop, but she didn't.”

“I think they tried to pull that tactic where they don't sit together on purpose...hoping no one will sit between them. But on full flights it doesn't work. And even so - it's not the other person's fault.”

The traveller's post was met with hundreds of comments slamming the girlfriend’s behaviour, as one person wrote, “It's like a toddler having a tantrum.”

“She was disappointed and a total a**hole. Gross entitled people,” another added.

Another person applauded the traveller’s level-headed behaviour, writing, “Wow! You are my hero for keeping it classy - I’m afraid I would not have been as kind as you.”

Prince Philip’s will to be kept sealed for 90 years

The UK High Court has ruled that Prince Philip’s will is to remain secret so as to protect the “dignity” of Queen Elizabeth, owing to her constitutional role. Philip died in April at the age of 99 following almost 74 years as the Queen’s consort.

Sir Andrew McFarlane, president of the Family Division of the High Court, heard arguments from lawyers representing Philip’s estate and the attorney general, who represents the public interest, in a private hearing in July, and published the court’s ruling on Thursday.

In the ruling, McFarlane ordered that Philip’s will remain sealed for 90 years, and even after that date, may only be opened in private. The judge said: “I have held that, because of the constitutional position of the sovereign, it is appropriate to have a special practice in relation to royal wills. There is a need to enhance the protection afforded to truly private aspects of the lives of this limited group of individuals in order to maintain the dignity of the sovereign and close members of her family.”

According to The Guardian, it has been convention for over a century that following the death of a senior member of the royal family, an application to seal their will is made to the president of the family division of the High Court. This means their wills are not publicly available the way most wills are.

McFarlane also ruled that any future judgements on applications to seal wills belonging to members of the royal family would remain closed, and therefore will not be made public.

Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, died on April 9th of this year, following a 73-year marriage to Queen Elizabeth, making him the longest-serving royal consort in world history. At the time, Buckingham Palace released a statement reading, "It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband. The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss."

Images: Danny Lawson - WPA Pool/Getty Images, Bettmann/Getty Images

A royal biographer has revealed an important detail of Princess Diana’s second pregnancy that she kept from her husband.

Andrew Morton says Princess Diana told him she knew she was having a son, but kept it a secret from Prince Charles.

“I knew Harry was going to be a boy because I saw on the scan,” he claimed she recalled to which she added: "Charles always wanted a girl".

The royal couple welcomed Prince William in 1982, less than a year after getting married.

Princess Diana fell pregnant again with Harry around two years later.

Morton says the royal told him her husband “wanted two children, and he wanted a girl.”

Morton said in his autobiography, Diana: Her True Story - in Her Own Words that the late royal told him that although she was extremely excited when Prince Harry was born in 1984, Charles was “less enthusiastic.”

It is rumoured after their second child was born, he had reportedly said “Oh God, it’s a boy,” then commented on the hair of Prince Harry where he said “and he’s even got red hair.”

Prince Charles had apparently made it extremely clear he was unhappy with having another son instead of a daughter, telling Princess Di’s mother, Frances Kydd: "We were so disappointed — we thought it would be a girl" at Harry’s christening.

According to Morton, in Diana’s own words, her mother had snapped at him.

She allegedly told her son-in-law "You should realise how lucky you are to have a child that's normal".

Princess Diana and Prince Charles divorced in 1996.

In 1997, Princess Di tragically passed away in a car accident.

Scroll through the gallery above to see Prince Harry as a young child.

“They kept walking”: 78-year-old man breaks hip and is left on the road without help

A 78-year-old man was left on the road for an hour and a half without help after falling off his bike, his daughter said.

Karingal resident Allan Mayo-Smith was cycling near Skye Road in Frankston, Melbourne when his front wheel slipped on sand, landing him on concrete and breaking his hip.

His daughter Kathryn Smith said he called on several people who saw him, but they did not go to his aid.

“He saw some people walk past and he was waving at them,” she told the ABC.

“He was screaming ‘help me’, and they just looked at him and kept walking.”

Smith said her father was “left to lie on wet grass” before a father and a son stopped to call an ambulance and take his bicycle for safekeeping.

“I was really disappointed in those people who just looked and then kept going,” she said.

“It’s not hard to check on someone.

“You can check on them a couple of metres away if you’re afraid it’s a set-up or a drug person. But he was in cycle gear, he was an old dude, you know.”

Since the fall earlier this week, Mayo-Smith has had hip replacement surgery.

Smith recalled a similar experience that she had when motorists “were just driving past” as she struggled in a motorbike accident on the Monash Freeway three months ago.

“People stopped, but only the ones that witnesses it. They didn’t get out and help, they saw me struggle to pick the bike up,” she said.

“I think everyone’s just out for themselves these days.”

This island off an island is Australia’s best kept secret

The blockbuster drug that could prevent Alzheimer's – why has it been kept secret?

A pharmaceutical company discovered that its drug could prevent Alzheimer’s disease, but kept the finding under the radar for four years, it has been revealed.

The Washington Post reported that American pharmaceutical company Pfizer chose not to publish its finding that its anti-inflammatory drug Enbrel, which is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, “could potentially safely prevent, treat and slow progression of Alzheimer’s disease”.

In 2015, a team of researchers inside the company found that Enbrel appeared to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease by 64 per cent based on an analysis of hundreds of thousands of insurance claims. Researchers in the inflammation and immunology division urged Pfizer to conduct a clinical trial to verify the drug’s efficacy, which is estimated to cost US$80 million.

“Enbrel could potentially safely prevent, treat and slow progression of Alzheimer’s disease,” read an internal company document dated February 2018.

However, after three years of internal reviews, Pfizer decided against making the data public. The company said the likelihood of a successful clinical trial is low, as the drug does not directly reach brain tissue.

According to company spokesperson Ed Harnaga, the decision was solely based on the fact that the findings failed to meet “rigorous scientific standards”.

Pfizer said the data was not made public because it might mislead outside scientists.

However, researchers said the company should at least make the findings available to a broader audience. “It would benefit the scientific community to have that data out there,” said Keenan Walker, an assistant professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins.

“Whether it was positive data or negative data, it gives us more information to make better informed decisions.”

Bobbie Farsides, professor of clinical and biomedical ethics at Brighton and Sussex Medical School in London said Pfizer has a responsibility to disclose the positive side effect of the drug. “Having acquired the knowledge, refusing to disclose it to those who might act upon it hides a potential benefit, and thereby wrongs and probably harms those at risk of developing Alzheimer’s by impeding research.”

The difficulty of getting regulatory approval to use a drug for a completely different disease may also play a part in the company’s decision to keep the findings a secret, said Robert Field, a professor of law and health care management at Drexel University. He admitted that it is “frustrating that there may be a missed opportunity”.

Alzheimer’s remains one of the most prevalent diseases among the ageing community. No clear cause, effective cure or preventive measure has been found for the disease so far.

How gardening kept my father young

Anne Marr, 68, shares her precious memories of her father, who loved nothing more than spending time in the garden growing fresh produce.

Dad always loved gardening. After 25 years of working at the East End Markets as a cashier, then running his own fruit and veg shop seven days a week for another 20 years, his dream life finally became a reality. When he retired at 70 years of age, he could finally concentrate on growing his own vegies.

Now Dad never did anything by halves. Growing vegies was a very serious business. Dates when everything was planted, the type of seed used, the fertiliser and the weather were all carefully recorded.

Mum longed for a holiday or for that matter, a trip out for the day, but now those were a thing of the past. “It’s too warm today,” Dad would say. “My seedlings will need a drink every three hours.”

Of course as one crop was harvested, another was already planted, so caring for seedlings was a non-stop job. “It’s like starting a family all over again,” complained Mum.

Things only escalated from there. Dad discovered the local show – finally somewhere he could show off his gardening expertise. The first year he entered just four of his magnificent specimens. Much to his wonder he won three firsts and a second.

We all thought this was great and the bonus of eating free prize winning vegies for weeks - even better. Mum wasn’t so sure. “He gets up at the crack of dawn and fusses for hours getting them ready,” she complained. “I should get so much attention.” But I caught the small smile after this comment.

We all reminded Mum it could be worse. At least he was home, out of her hair, and really, it was a cheap hobby. Not to mention all the fresh produce that appeared out of their backyard. “You try blanching and freezing 15 kilos of beans,” she said. “I don’t care how expensive they are in the supermarkets I never want to see another bean again.”

But of course she did, and she loved the compliments she got from her friends about how fit and young-looking her husband was. Plus, how lucky was she to have all this fresh produce. “I can’t let him know about that he might get too big a head,” she would say. “So I’ll just complain a bit instead,” she said with a smile

Then came that fateful day: 19 entries went into the show, 19 first prizes came home. Plus, the trophy for the most number of points. Now things were really cooking and Dad was gardening in earnest.

The second year a repeat performance and Dad was over the moon. Mum had joined in helping.

The third year to Dad’s amazement, another repeat performance. But Mum was now getting a little tired of the whole procedure of staying up half the night guarding his prize-winning veg. Dad was also tiring of growing his pristine vegetables. He never used any chemicals or sprays, instead he patrolled his veggie garden at night with a torch. No earwig or snail was safe.

But then for a few weeks, Dad went rather quiet to the point where Mum asked, “Are you ok, what’s up”? “Nothing,” said Dad, “Just thinking.”

He finally announced to the entire family when we were all gathered for his 75th birthday, “I have decided that this year I won’t enter the show. It’s not fair to everyone else who enters if I just keep winning year after year. It’s time to give other people a chance to win. Three years in a row is enough for me to know I grow the best so I’m retiring.”

“Thank goodness,” was Mum’s reply.

But of course Dad kept gardening, just in a more relaxed way, and both of them got to sleep all night and go on the occasional trip. No more snail guarding or patrolling the garden hourly. Our fridges and freezers were still being filled, but we all did our own blanching and freezing.

Dad passed over in his late 80s at home, still looking like a young 60-year-old, with my daughter and myself holding his hands. His grandson was sitting on the bed with him along with our dog. With his last sentence he continued his philosophy of doing something he’d never done before. He said “I forgive the world and I forgive myself too.”

All my life Dad had judged the world, or the people in it and found them guilty. He finally learnt how to forgive just before he left. This I was so happy about.

My daughter and I continue to grow vegies, just not as good as Dads, of course.

If you have a story to share please get in touch at melody@oversixty.com.au

Related links:

How to say no when you’re unable to babysit grandkids

7 important things little children should be allowed to do

Grandparenting in the 21st century

The best-kept secret for caring for older loved ones

As parents or close family members age, it can get harder for them to stay in their own home. Serious illness, mobility issues, injury, sight and hearing problems – all of these can mean that their desire to remain at home is no longer viable.

For some people, it means being caught up trying to look after parents and children or grandchildren. When each of the families involved don’t live in the same area, it can prove difficult to manage.

If the elderly parents are don’t require full-blown aged care, but they do need a little help with certain tasks, another option that is worth investigating is a serviced apartment. These offer independent living with some assistance where required with tasks such as cleaning and cooking.

Often it is the parent themselves who realise they need a bit more help around the house. They may even feel worried that they are becoming a burden to their kids if they need someone to cook meals for them or help them with the clothes washing. This is especially true when close family members don’t live in the same area.

There are various apartment styles available, nearly all are single-level which is ideal if stairs are becoming a problem.

Other benefits include access to a like-minded community of retirees who are all of similar mobility and health. There are clubs to join and activities to enjoy together. Socialisation is a key part of well being for the elderly, and having a group of people to spend time with can be beneficial for their health.

Related links:

Grandmother retires after 52 years walking kids to school

9-year-old raises $100,000 for sick kids

Wonderful moment newborn twins meet for the first time
