“I was spiralling”: Naomi Watts’ candid menopause admission

Naomi Watts has spoken candidly about how her life drastically changed when she started going through early menopause at the age of 36.

The Aussie actress, now 54, said going through such a big change at such a young age “wasn’t easy”, and found it difficult to access information about what she was going through, both physically and mentally.

Speaking candidly to Hello magazine, she said, “Going through menopause at such a young age was not easy, especially during a time when there was so little information available about it.”

“Mood swings, night sweats, and migraines … I was feeling like I was spiralling out of control,” she added.

According to the Mayo Clinic, menopause typically occurs at the age of 50, when a woman experiences her last period.

Despite the change coming on much earlier than anticipated, Watts said learning to cope with the hormonal changes helped her feel more liberated.

“Going through this journey led me to a deeper understanding of myself, and I came out on the other side feeling more authentically me,” she told Page Six.

“A lot of freedom came in the self-acknowledgment.”

She continued, “I had those voices in the back of my mind reminding me how old women are let out to pasture, but there was a lure to this desire to be authentic, to crawl from behind the invisible wall and just acknowledge for myself something that everyone could have probably guessed.”

Watts’ personal experience led her to partner with Menopause Mandate, a non-profit organisation that aims to revolutionise midlife support available for American women.

“I truly believe that if menopause hadn’t been such an off-limits topic when I first started experiencing symptoms, I would’ve had an easier transition,” she said.

“I was part of a cycle that desperately needed to be broken.”

But to her surprise, her tastebuds remained pretty chill. No cravings for pickles and ice cream, or bizarre food combinations. No pressure, Naomi; we're sure you'll ace the parenting game just like you do on the court.)

When Osaka made the big announcement on Instagram, she did it with style. In a carousel of photos, she unveiled an ultrasound screen capturing the first glimpse of her future tennis prodigy. But it wasn't just about the picture; she had a heartfelt message to share with her fans.

She reflected on the rollercoaster ride of the past few years and how challenges have shaped her into the fierce competitor she is today. Life's too short to take for granted, and every moment is a precious blessing. Osaka can't wait for her little one to witness her dominating matches and proudly declare, "That's my mum!"

Osaka also has her sights set on the court once again. She's determined to swing back into action after welcoming her baby girl. Chances are good your day or night cream probably contain it as an ingredient and if you have regular facials, it’s most likely integrated into the treatment somehow. While our body is constantly creating new collagen, the rate at which this happens starts to slow right down as we get older. Fortunately, along with your topical products, certain foods can help naturally boost collagen in the skin.

Here’s what to include on your plate to give your dermis a boost:

Fish – Packed with Omega-3, quality fish helps create stronger cells, which in turn support the structure of the skin.

Red fruit and veggies – Veggies like chilli, capsicum and beetroot and fruits like tomato contain lycopene, an antioxidant that acts as a natural sunblock, helping protect skin from UV rays while also boosting collagen.

Dark green veggies – Rich in vitamin C and high in antioxidants, veggies like kale, spinach and darker varieties of lettuce can help increase collagen production.

Orange vegtgies – Chowing down on carrots and sweet potato gives your body a hit of vitamin A, which restores and regenerates damaged collagen.

Berries – Low in sugar and delicious to boot, berries contain antioxidants which help eliminate free radicals and increase collagen levels.

Soy products – Whether it’s soy milk, cheese, yoghurt or even tofu, soy contains a hormone called genistein which helps boost collagen production and block enzymes that cause ageing.

White and green herbal teas – Sipping a cup of herbal tea can help support the structure of the skin and prevent collagen breakdown.

Citrus – Fruits like orange, lime and lemon not only contain high levels of vitamin C but they also have the ability to help convert amino acids to collagen.

Eggs – Protein rich foods in general are high in collagen, which can help boost the levels in your skin. Lean meat and nuts are also great for creating a healthy complexion.

Garlic – Not only useful for warding off cold and flu, garlic provides the body with sulfur that is necessary for collagen production.

Surprising items to never take into the kitchen

Keeping your kitchen clean may seem like a never ending task at times, what with constant food preparation and other crumb and mess producing activities taking place all day long. There’s a difference however between a “messy” kitchen and a “dirty” kitchen with the latter providing a breeding ground for nasty germs and harmful bacteria. Here’s what to ban now for a cleaner, healthier kitchen space in a snap.

1. Sponges – You’ve probably heard it before but the kitchen sponge is a breeding ground for bacteria. Keep yours spick and span with a weekly soak and wash in bleach followed by a dry in the sun and chuck them out once they start to show signs of wear and tear.

2. Shabby re-usable grocery bags – If your reusable grocery bags are starting to show their age, it may be time to replace them. Your bags can harbour plenty of bacteria from the loads of groceries you use them for. A quick wash and dry can help solve the problem and prolong the life span of your bags.

3. Your mobile – Your mobile phone is crawling with germs. Taking it into the kitchen while cooking is a sure fire way to transfer the yuckiness to your food. Try and keep your device out of the kitchen or if you need it for cooking, set it somewhere away from the food and wipe your hands and device down with an antibacterial wipe after you’ve finished cooking.

4. Pet food – While keeping your dog or cat food in the house can help prevent outdoor pest problems, the kitchen isn’t the place for food bowls. If their food sits out for a longer period of time it can attract indoor pests and create a less than appealing smell. Try moving your feeding station to the laundry for a more sanitary solution.

5. Your handbag – Similar to your mobile, your handbag is literally covered in grime. Think about where you take it on a daily basis! Keep it out of the kitchen when and where possible.

5 make-up mistakes making you look tired

When applied correctly, a good make-up job can be a Godsend – taking you from tired and washed-out to invigorated and glowing. Unfortunately, it can work the other way as well with incorrect application making you look even more exhausted than you actually are! Fortunately it’s easy to avoid these make-you-look-tired traps. Here are the five common mistakes many women make (and how to avoid them).

1. Overdoing the powder – Dull skin is synonymous with tired skin and an overly powdered complexion often emphasises that. Try skipping the matte foundation and powder combo and try either an illuminating liquid foundation or even a BB cream or tinted moisturiser which will highlight instead of camouflaging.

2. Going beige – Skipping colour on your face may seem the best way to detract attention away from a tired complexion but by embracing beige, you’re actually doing yourself a disservice. A completely neutral face looks lacklustre and a little bit flat. Try adding some definition and pop with a darker toned lippie or rosy hued blush to lift your face and add some colour.

3. Using the wrong concealer – Concealer is there to conceal. Unfortunately, the wrong shade can actually highlight that which you’re trying to cover. Try a creamy formula no more than one shade lighter than your natural skin tone. And always try out your shade in natural light as artificial light can disguise the true match.

4. Layering on the liner – While a smoky eye may be a classic look, if you’re looking less than fresh, it can come across as harsh and unflattering. Try skipping the black and grey shades in favour of navy or even dark brown, as they’ll help lift your eyes and add definition without darkness.

5. Forgetting to curl – Curling your lashes is one of the best ways to open up your whole eye area and help you look awake and alert. Unfortunately, it’s often the first thing we forget to do when tired. Try curling your lashes first, before applying the rest of your makeup and if you really want to amp up the result, use a heated eyelash curler.

Images: Getty

8 nifty uses for leftover glass jars

If your recycling bin is building up with leftover jars, scoop them out and salvage them. There are so many uses for leftover jars that you never need crowd out the rubbish again.

Here are our eight favourites:

Vase – Leftover glass jars, especially long narrow ones (like the ones tomato passata come in) are ideal for small flower arrangements. Wild flowers or natives look especially good in these vintage inspired vessels.

Candle-holder – Forget expensive candle holders. Small glass jars are excellent for holding your tea-lights. Try different shapes and sizes grouped together for an eye-catching effect.

Hold-all – Need somewhere to store your pens/pencils or even the bits and bobs that make up your sewing kit? Try using a large glass jar. Added bonus? You can see everything you’ve stashed.

Drinking glass – If you’ve been to a trendy café recently, you may have had your drink served in a glass jar. It’s the new ‘in thing’ to do. Why not create the same vibe at home and serve your drinks in your leftover jars? Smoothies especially are great in jars. You can even cap them with the lid for drinks on the go.

Related link: Make your own polka-dot drinking glasses

Planter – If you’re a keen gardener, especially one with a small space to green up, you’re no doubt always on the lookout for planters. Larger sized glass jars can make a beautifully eye-catching display for small plants with succulents.

Storage container – If your jar still has a tightly fitted lid, why not use it to store other foods? Homemade foods like pesto and nut butters are especially good stored in air-tight glass containers while large jars make the perfect biscuit tin.

Gift – Bear with us! While handing over an empty glass jar probably isn’t the best idea, filling a pretty jar with some homemade goodies makes for an excellent gift. The dry ingredients for biscuits, a favourite slice or even something like homemade tea or dried herbs and spices can all be placed in a jar festooned with some ribbon and a card.

Related links:

A guide to homemade candles

Great uses for Mason jars

How to create your own flower arrangements

“I didn’t know how to ask for help”: Naomi Watts shares important message on ageing

Naomi Watts got candid about the topic of menopause and how the word used to “freak her out” in a bid to normalise conversations about this aspect of every woman’s life.

The 53-year-old took to Instagram to tackle the topic, which she describes as “a natural phase in life”, sharing her own experience and revealing that it began earlier than she expected.

“When I was in my late 30s, I was finally ready to start thinking about creating a family. Then the M word swiftly blew my doors down, it felt like a head-on collision with a Mack truck.🚚💥,” she began.

“How could I figure this out when no one was talking? I was earlier to it than my peers. My mentors and mum didn’t seem up for discussing it, I didn’t know how to ask for help and they didn’t know how to provide… even doctors had little to say.

“It’s oddly like an unwritten code of silence: women should suck it up and cope, because that’s how generations past have done it.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Naomi Watts (@naomiwatts)

Watts then called for more representation of women “in this phase of life” and age group in the media.

“We’ve been under-served in media, stories and marketing for far too long”, she continued.

“Particularly since 1 billion people worldwide will be menopausal by 2025…

“When you spotlight uncomfortable conversations, they get easier. Why has this particular one taken so long?”

She concluded the post by urging everyone to “conquer the stigma” and “address the secrecy and shame” for the sake of generations to come.

“Getting older is a privilege and a time for us to feel proud of our cumulative experiences - to feel empowered, unapologetically so,” she wrote.

“I think being part of a change-maker generation is exciting. No more walking through this alone.”

Watts, who became a mother at the age of 38, hinted that she is “working on something” she is “super proud of”, with more details to come soon.

Image: @naomiwatts (Instagram)

It’s a very strange dynamic, to be this broken and this blessed.”

The sisters also quoted Psalm 23, a common hymn for funeral services.

“My mama loved you so much and I’m sorry that she couldn’t hang on until today,” Ashley began.

“Your esteem for her and your regard for her really penetrated her heart, and it was your affection for her that did keep her going in the last years, and please come see Pop,” she continued in reference to her stepfather and Naomi’s husband Larry Strickland.

“While this is so much about the Judds as a duo, I want to take a moment to recognise my sister, a GOAT.”

Wynonna then jumped in: “Though my heart is broken, I will continue to sing.”

Naomi and daughter Wynonna, began singing together as a professional act in the early 1980s.

They produced major hits loved by fans all over the world including "Mama He's Crazy" and "Love Can Build a Bridge”.

The sisters announced their mother’s death in a statement on Sunday.

"Today we sisters experienced a tragedy. We lost our beautiful mother to the disease of mental illness," the statement read.

"We are shattered. We are navigating profound grief and know that, as we loved her, she was loved by her public. We are in unknown territory."

Image: Getty

Naomi Osaka's stunning new mega-mansion

Naomi Osaka, former World No. 1 tennis player, has forked out $8.7 million (US$6.3m) for former boy-band star Nick Lachey's LA home.

This isn't the first time the famed athlete has bought a home from a pop star. In 2019, Osaka splashed $9.5 million (US$6.9m) on buying Nick Jonas' 90210 pad.

The San Fernando Valley purchase happened off market, according to Dirt, and appears to be a tidy pay day for Lachey and wife Vanessa. The pair only lived there for a year after buying the house in late 2020 for $7 million (US$5.1m).

Nick Lachey is best known as the former 98 Degrees boyband singer, Jessica Simpson's ex-husband and co-host of Netflix's Love Is Blind.

Osaka is well placed to indulge in luxury real estate. Forbes estimates the Japanese-Haitian tennis superstar's income reached $83 million (US$60 million) in a single year, making her the highest-paid female athlete of all time.

Located in LA's Tarzana neighbourhood, the East Coast traditional-inspired manor was newly built in 2015 and boasts an outdoor feature Osaka was no doubt drawn to – a sunken sports court.

Behind a double-gated driveway, the home welcomes you with manicured front garden and driveway parking for a dozen or more cars, plus a four-car garage.

Interiors feature a large gourmet eat-in kitchen with dual islands, a formal dining room sports wainscoting and a patterned wallpaper, a lounge area with beautiful coffered ceiling and fireplace and a temperature-controlled wine cellar.

There's a media room that acts a second comfy lounge room and a "parlor games room" that in listing photos is equipped with pool table and wet bar that can easily seat five sports fans. There's also a movie theatre.

All five of the home's bedrooms enjoy ensuite full bathrooms, with an additional two powder rooms in the residence. The upstairs main suite comes with a fireplace, private balcony, private sitting room and dual closets.

Year-round outdoor entertaining is also on offer, with a covered loggia including fans and a fireplace.

Outside, the resort-style backyard has grassy lawns, a fire pit, stamped concrete patio and a dark-bottomed pool. Plus, there's also a bar and built-in BBQ for summer get togethers.

The best feature of the roughly 2,800sqm property, and no doubt part of the reason Osaka was keen to snag the home, is the aforementioned sports court.

Images: Domain.com.au

Ever wondered who would win in a fight between a dingo and a wolf? An expert explains

Imagine two of the world’s most iconic canids – a dingo and a wolf – head to head in a fight. Who would win?

Before we examine the combatants in more detail, we need to answer an important question first, which wolf and which dingo? Taxonomy – the way we describe, name and classify Earth’s biodiversity – remains contentious for both animals.

Dingoes are recognised as a species in their own right by some, but not others. And, dingoes are quite different in their size and appearance, depending on whether they live in Australia’s alpine and forested areas, deserts, or tropical regions.

As for wolves, there are North American (“Grey”), Mexican, Eurasian, Himalayan, Asiatic, Indian and Tibetan, Red, African golden, Ethiopian and even “ghost wolves” – yes, ghost wolves! Ghost wolves are species we can recognise from the past using genetic information, but they no longer survive and no fossils are known to exist.

And then there are “wolves” that aren’t wolves at all: the fox-like maned wolf in South America, and the gargantuan, now-extinct dire wolf.

The maned wolf is a canine from South America, but is neither a wolf nor a fox. Shutterstock

For the purposes of this battle, let’s assume it’s between a grey wolf and an alpine dingo.

Why do dogs, dingoes and wolves fight?

For wild canids, fights occur for many reasons, within and between species when they overlap. Wolves and dingoes fight for mates, to attain dominance within packs, and to establish and maintain their territories.

So, let’s get to know each opponent a little better.

Dingoes and wolves are both social and intelligent species, capable of complex behaviours and problem solving.

Grey wolves are what we call hyper-carnivores, feeding predominantly on other animals, in many cases large prey such as deer, elk, moose and bison.

Dingoes are omnivores with a broad, varied diet. They eat everything from fruits, to invertebrates, to small and large vertebrates – think lizards, birds, wombats, wallabies, possums, kangaroos, and feral animals like goats and deer. Dingoes will also scavenge food and carcasses.

Prior to European invasion, dingoes likely occupied all of mainland Australia.

Aside from humans, it’s thought the grey wolf was once the world’s most widespread mammal, where it, and its subspecies, occurred across much of Europe, Asia, and North and Central America. But, like with dingoes, humans have caused substantial population and range decline of wolves.

The battle: terrain is crucial

The terrain of the arena for our combatants would be crucial. Dingoes and wolves are capable of moving at great speeds, sustained for long periods of time, especially in open country. Both can reach top speeds in the range of 50-60 kilometres per hour!

Aside from humans, the grey wolf may once have been the world’s most widespread mammal. Milo Weiler/Unsplash, CC BY

However, dingoes arguably have the advantage in tight spots, in terms of their much smaller size, greater agility and flexibility, and climbing abilities. Dingoes typically weigh between 15 and 20 kilograms, while grey wolves are usually in the range of 30-65kg, and up to around 80kg for some males.

Dingoes have been recorded vertically jumping 2 metres and climbing fences, making them quite cat-like in many respects. So, if the battle occurs among many obstacles and on steep terrain, this will give dingoes an edge.

Dingoes are perfectly adapted to Australia’s conditions. Shutterstock

But if the fight is in the open, the much heavier, taller, and longer wolves will be too much for dingoes. They also pack a heavier bite quotient (bite force relative to body mass) of 136 as compared to the dingo’s 108.

Having said that, wolves are much taller than dingoes, around 65-80 centimetres and 45-60cm at their shoulders, respectively. So it’s possible a wily dingo could dash under the legs of a tall wolf and launch an attack on the vulnerable underbelly.

What about pack vs pack?

The final factor to consider is whether the fight is simply one dingo vs one wolf. Both can occur as individuals or in packs.

Grey wolves can be in packs with 20 or more individuals. Eva Blue/Unsplash, CC BY

Dingoes are typically found alone, in pairs or in small packs of a few individuals, but occasionally can be found in much larger, less socially cohesive groups of ten or more when food resources are plentiful.

Wolves, on the other hand, are often found in groups of between five and ten, but much larger packs of 20 or more can also occur.

I spoke to Lyn Watson, who runs the Dingo Discovery and Research Centre. She says dingoes are “flight, rather than fight, canids”. This is wise behaviour, as dingoes are small in number and size and can’t rely on a large pack, like wolves sometimes can, to substitute them should they become injured in a fight.

She goes on to say that from her 30 years of observations, female dingoes are particularly deadly.

While dingoes are small, bonded pairs will fight in a coordinated way. Males fight in traditional neck and throat grabs, or “elbow”, but their bonded other has a completely different mode - and it’s deadly.

The female will stay at the periphery then dart into the soft parts of the combatant that is threatening her mate. She aims to maim - and does so, targeting the most “sensitive” of areas, enough said!

So if it’s pack vs pack, wolves will be far too strong. But if a single wolf was unlucky enough to come across a pack of dingoes, the tide could turn strongly in favour of dingoes.

Female dingoes aim to maim when they fight. Angus Emmott

Learning to live together

Even though wolves and dingoes fight in the wild, despite common perceptions, they generally pose a very small risk to people, especially if we adhere to advice such as not feeding them.

Domestic and feral dogs pose a far greater risk to us. It’s estimated that around the world, dogs bite and injure tens of millions of people annually. In the US alone, it’s thought around 4.5 million people are bitten by dogs each year.

Of course, in reality wolves and dingoes will never fight each other in the wild. The greatest threat they both face is the ongoing destruction of their habitats and widespread direct persecution from humans (trapping, poisoning, shooting, and exclusion from areas), often aimed at protecting livestock.

Like other apex predators, dingoes and wolves have critical roles in our ecosystems and, in many cases, have deep cultural significance for Indigenous people. We must find more ethical and sustainable ways to share our world. <!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. Naomi Osaka's feud with Piers Morgan heats up

A Twitter feud has started between Naomi Osaka, conservative commentator Megan Kelly, and Piers Morgan, after Kelly and Morgan hit out at the tennis star over her recent magazine feature.

Osaka recently appeared on the front cover of Sports Illustrated in a swimsuit photoshoot, making history as the first Japanese and Haitian woman to do so.

After sharing the cover on her social media pages, Osaka attracted criticism for appearing in the media after her recent break from the spotlight.

Since taking time away from the tennis court on mental health grounds, Osaka has announced a collaboration with Barbie for her ‘Role Model’ doll, a Netflix mini-series about her, and made appearances in Vogue, Time Magazine, and Sports Illustrated.

All of these media engagements would have been in the works for months, but sports pundit Clay Travis called Osaka out for her latest media appearances during her break.

Kelly and Morgan echoed their support for his criticisms.

“Since saying she’s too introverted to talk to the media after tennis matches, Naomi Osaka has launched a reality show, a Barbie, and now is on the cover of the SI swimsuit issue,” Travis said on Twitter.

Let’s not forget the cover of (& interview in) Vogue Japan and Time Mag! https://t.co/PAAUEwAVi0
— Megyn Kelly (@megynkelly) July 19, 2021

ANOTHER magazine cover for brave inspiring Naomi!
No wonder she had no time for beastly media press conferences! 🤣 https://t.co/ckrKodKBc5
— Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) July 19, 2021

In a now-deleted tweet, Osaka hit back at Kelly and criticised her for not doing her ‘research’ and for ‘spewing negativity’.

“Seeing as you’re a journalist I would’ve assumed you would take the time to research what the lead times are for magazines, if you did that you would’ve found out I shot all of my covers last year,” Osaka wrote.

But, after appearing to block Kelly, the commentator continued the attack on the tennis star.

Poor @naomiosaka blocked me while taking a shot at me (guess she’s only tough on the courts). She is apparently arguing that she shot her many covers b/4 publicly claiming she was too socially anxious to deal w/press. Truth is she just doesn’t like Qs she can’t control. You have no idea what you are talking about. But go ahead and take your shot. It missed badly!!!” Navratilova tweeted.
