Prince William’s undercover university ‘disguise’ revealed

Prince William knows a thing or two about life in the public eye, with most of his major life moments playing out for the entire world to see.

But that hasn’t always been the case, with the prince taking matters into his own hands when it came to his education, and opting to fly under the radar during his time at the University of St Andrews in Scotland.

And luckily for William, the media agreed, allowing him to conduct his studies with their constant - and prying - eyes on him.

But he still had to take a few extra measures to blend in with the rest of the prestigious student body, with one move rising above all of the others: Prince William decided to go by ‘Steve’.

According to The Mirror, the prince did still officially enrol under the name William Wales, but when it came to his friends and fellow students, ‘Steve’ was the perfect solution for avoiding any undesired attention.

And, as some have pointed out, it’s likely his now-wife Kate used the nickname, too, as “they were close friends at university and lived in the same student accommodation.”

However, it had been previously reported by the same publication that Kate had an entirely different pet name for the royal, in which they claimed she used the name ‘Big Willy’ instead. They also noted that the Princess of Wales had occasionally called him ‘Baldy’, too.

As a source explained to The Mirror at the time, “the royals are not very good at communicating with one another so this is one way around it. Nicknames are a way of taking the family tension out of things.”

William’s university stint wasn’t the first time he had gone by a different name, either, with the prince admitting in a 2007 interview with NBC that he had actually gone by ‘Wombat’ when he was younger - a nickname bestowed upon him by his mother, Princess Diana.

“I can’t get rid of it now,” he said. “It began when I was two. I’ve been rightfully told because I can’t remember back that far. But when we went to Australia with our parents, and the wombat, you know, that’s the local animal. So I just basically got called that. Not because I look like a wombat. Or maybe I do.”

And the unintended family tradition seems to have carried on through to William’s own children, with Charlotte having two nicknames of her own that have come to light.

At the Chelsea Flower Show in 2019, the royals were with their children in Kate’s ‘Back to Nature’ garden when William called out to Charlotte. Although rather than using her real name, he called out for ‘Mignonette’ - a French word meaning “small, sweet, and delicate” or even “cute”.

As for Kate, she revealed her nickname for Charlotte - ‘Lottie’ - during a visit to Northern Ireland in 2019, while she was chatting to another proud mother.

Images: Getty

Meghan Markle hits back at unfair nickname

Meghan Markle has hit back at her nickname, which she says is “really a codeword for the B-word”.

In her latest podcast episode To ‘B’ or not to ‘B’?, the Duchess of Sussex said her nickname “Duchess Difficult” is a way of gaslighting women.

“What these people are implying when they use that very charged word, is that this woman: ‘Oh, she’s difficult’,” she said in the episode on Archetypes.

“Which is really just a euphemism or is probably not even a euphemism. It’s really a codeword for the B-word.”

Meghan was given the nickname back in 2018 when she was accused of displaying “dictator” style behaviour towards her staff members - which led to one of them quitting.

“My friend said to me, there’s a certain point when you come to terms with the fact that not everyone is going to like you,” Meghan continued.

“The goal can’t be for everyone to like you, but the goal can be for them to respect you.”

Meghan has also been called the “Princess of Montecito” because of her bizarre requests when it comes to booking restaurants.

“If she’s going into Beverly Hills or West Hollywood for lunch or dinner, she’ll generally call ahead and request a table that is completely secluded,” a source told the UK’s Closer magazine.

The source alleges that Meghan’s favourite restaurants aren’t well known but when she goes to high-end places, she ensures the place is perfect for her arrival.

“But, generally speaking, these days she likes higher-end hangouts like Cecconi’s, Sunset Tower, Sugarfish or Lucky’s steakhouse in Montecito, which was recommended by Oprah,” the magazine reported.

“It’s become their favourite, and they’re waited on hand and foot.”

Image: Getty

King Charles' nickname for Meghan Markle revealed

King Charles III's nickname for his daughter-in-law Meghan Markle has been revealed, proving the level of respect and adoration he once had for the Duchess.

Royal expert Katie Nicholl reveals in her book The New Royals that the monarch called the Duchess of Sussex “Tungsten”, which is a hard steel-grey metal that has the highest melting point of all metallic elements.

“Charles reportedly nicknamed his future daughter-in-law ‘Tungsten’ because of her toughness and resilience,” Nicholl writes.

Nicholl said that the nickname was born when Meghan showed a display of unwavering poise and resilience her and Prince Harry’s appearance with Prince William and Kate Middleton at the Royal Foundation Forum in 2018.

“It was, according to one aide, the moment William and Kate, who was heavily pregnant, realised they needed to up their game,” Nicholl writes.

“The Cambridges [now the Prince and Princess of Wales] had already signalled their intention to be more than ‘ornamental royals’ and had, along with Harry, made a huge success of their mental health campaign Heads Together."

“But Meghan was the breakout star of the foursome. She was polished, passionate and funny, using all her TV-honed skills to present her case. That was a wake-up moment for William and Kate when they realised that Meghan was very impressive, very confident and very capable, according to a source.”

While Charles may have used the term of endearment four years ago, it’s unclear whether he still calls Markle the nickname after she and Harry resigned from their royal duties in 2020 and moved to California, where they reside with their two kids, Archie, three, and Lilibet, one.

How Meghan Markle earned her new nickname

Meghan Markle has been given a new nickname thanks to her behaviour in California.

The Duchess of Sussex and Prince Harry have been living in the American state after leaving the British Monarch.

And Meghan seems to be making an impression on the locals that she has been dubbed “Princess of Montecito” because of her bizarre requests.

Montecito is best known to host some of the most popular celebrities including Oprah, Ellen DeGeneres and Serena Williams.

The source said that Meghan spend quite a bit of time with Oprah where they talk about her future, issues in the UK, and Harry.

It comes as Harry and Meghan were seen leaving Oprah’s house in June with rumours swirling that another tell-all interview is on the way.

Harry appears to be content with his life in California as he wakes up to feed the kids and drive his wife to meetings before coming back, the source alleges.

But questions are swirling on how much longer he would be comfortable with the lifestyle.

“With all this speculation around her political career ambitions, everyone thinks Harry would be happy at the idea of being first gentleman if she accomplishes her long-term goal,” the source continued.

“Having said that, he might be fine with it right now — but you have to wonder for how much longer.”

Image: Getty

Royal biographer reveals Camilla's nickname for Meghan Markle

Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, branded Meghan Markle “that minx” and thought she was “ungrateful”, a royal expert claims.

Royal biographer Tom Bower has claimed that the two duchesses have never seen eye-to-eye. Future Queen Camilla is reportedly “suspicious” of the intentions of Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex.

He believes that Camilla, 74, remained “tight lipped” with her opinions of Meghan after she was brought into the Royal Family by her stepson.

There has been complete silence from Prince Harry and Meghan after the Queen announced Camilla would be known as Queen Consort when Prince Charles, aged 73 becomes King.

Mr Bowers believes that their silence was “deliberate” and an “insult” to the Royal Family.

“Perhaps the Sussexes’ deafening silence is Meghan’s way of declaring war.” He said.

“It is believed that she has never liked Camilla, and I am sure the feelings are reciprocated. She found it hard to believe that Meghan would sacrifice her career and independence to serve silently as a team player devoted to the monarchy."

“But, as in all her conduct, Camilla remained tight-lipped. While watching Charles painfully believe that Harry was intent on publicly humiliating him, Camilla undoubtedly provided the comfort and good advice to reassure her husband that he had done the best he could.

“She could comfort him that while his authority is challenged by the Sussex’s, he would emerge victorious."

“During those inevitably endless, tortured and inconclusive conversations, Camilla is the sort who would refer to Meghan as ‘that minx’ — the self-seeking troublemaker whose antics will always end in tears.”

In an address marking her Accession Day, Her Majesty, 95, said it was her “sincere wish” that the Duchess of Cornwall will be known as Queen Consort.

Image: Getty

The real meaning behind Prince Charles' nickname for Camilla

To the world, they're known as Charles, the Prince of Wales, and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall.

But behind closed doors, they have long been known to each other as Fred and Gladys.

The nickname originated from a British radio comedy show called The Goon Show, that ran from 1951 to 1960 and was a personal favourite of Prince Charles'.

Fred and Gladys were two of the main characters on the show that appeared regularly, but no details have emerged on why these specific names were chosen.

The nicknames have even been used in the latest season of The Crown, which focuses on Charles' relationship with Diana.

The royal couple have been using the nicknames for each other since they first started dating in their twenties, before Prince Charles' wedding to Princess Diana.

Through his engagement and marriage to Diana, Charles continued his relationship with Camilla, with Diana even finding a gold bracelet with the letters "G" and "F" engraved, which was meant for Camilla.

Diana spoke of finding the bracelet with royal biographer Andrew Morton, saying, “I walked into this man’s office one day and I said, ‘Ooh, what’s in that parcel?’ And he said ‘Oh, you shouldn’t look at that.

“So I opened it and there was a gold chain bracelet with a blue enamel disc. It’s got ‘G and F’ entwined in it, ‘Gladys’ and ‘Fred’—they were their nicknames.”

She later spoke about deciding to marry the royal despite finding the gift, with royal expert Jennie Bond saying, "Diana told me much later in one of our private conversations that she had felt like a lamb to the slaughter as she walked up the aisle, which was very sad."

Why Prince Charles’ secret “nickname” for Meghan Markle is important

One royal expert has said the nickname Prince Charles reportedly uses for Meghan Markle has provided an incredibly unique look into the duo’s relationship.

Christine-Marie Liwag told The List that the Prince of Wales’s nickname for his daughter-in-law is in fact a compliment, despite public doubts when the name leaked in 2019.

Dixon said a feeling of admiration for Meghan is evident in the nickname he reportedly used for her - Tungsten.

“As royal correspondent Russell Myers revealed on Lorraine in 2019, Charles nicknamed her after the metal as ‘she is tough and unbending’,” she said.

“Tungsten is the strongest naturally occurring metal on the planet. That makes this a pretty neat compliment all things considered.”

Dixon went on to say Charles has a lot of respect for his daughter-in-law, who is married to Prince Harry.

“Meghan Markle hasn’t had an easy time of it since joining the Royal Family,” she said.

“Not only has the press hounded her relentless, but she has also said that she felt less than at home in the Royal Family.

“The Royal Family may not have approved of Meghan and Harry stepping down as senior royals despite them doing so to escape an environment that was clearly not good for their mental health.

“However it seems that Prince Charles had a lot of respect for Meghan’s resilient nature.”

Charles’ youngest son, Prince Harry, recently made headlines earlier this year after he admitted he had felt “total neglect” from the royal family in his mental health documentary.

On Apple TV’s The Me You Can’t See, Harry revealed traumatic memories from his childhood, including the death of his mother Diana, Princess of Wales.

He also went on to describe the brutality of harassment on social media, admitting it impacted he and his wife Meghan drastically.

“Every single ask, request, warning, whatever it is, to stop just got met with total silence or total neglect,” he told Winfrey in reference to his alleged multiple attempts to get mental help for his family after endless malicious attacks online.

“We spent four years trying to make it work. We did everything that we possibly could to stay there and carry on doing the role and doing the job.”

Image: Getty

Bindi Irwin shares how Steve Irwin inspired her baby's nickname

Bindi Irwin is keeping her father's legacy alive, 15 years after his tragic death.

Speaking to The Bump, the pregnant wildlife conservationist shared how her dad, Steve Irwin, inspired her and her husband Chandler Powell to nickname their daughter Baby Wildlife Warrior, ahead of her arrival.

"My dad would have been the best grandfather," 22-year-old Irwin said. "I always joke that if he was still here, we'd never see our baby because he'd take her on all kinds of adventures! I want to make sure our baby girl gets to know my dad and thankfully, we have many documentaries and photos we can share with her. I think she'll love getting to watch footage of Dad working with all kinds of animals and learning about his legacy.

"My dad was the first person to create the term 'Wildlife Warrior.' Being a Wildlife Warrior means to stand up and speak for those who cannot speak for themselves. We've been referring to our daughter as our Baby Wildlife Warrior. I know in my heart that she will forge her own path to make our planet a better place."

Steve tragically died in 2006 at 44 years of age after being pierced in the chest by a stingray in the Great Barrier Reef.

But Bindi and Powell's baby-on-the-way isn't the only one who has been given a nickname, as mother Terri Irwin has been given a special moniker as a future grandmother.

"My extraordinary mama is my best friend and I know that she is going to be such an amazing grandmother," Bindi gushed. "We spent a long time searching for grandma names that also had an animal link. We decided that she's going to be called 'Bunny.'"

Grandma bans grandchild, 5, from visiting her home

A shocked mum has lashed out at her husband’s family after the grandmother banned their five-year-old daughter from visiting.

The reason for the ban is due to a nickname given to the grandchild by the grandmother.

The couple’s daughter is named Collette, but her mother-in-law has given her a nickname called “Letters”.

Mum admits that “it’s not the greatest nickname in the world”, but it hasn’t been a problem until now.

Her daughter recently asked her mum why grandma calls her letters.

“Why does grandma call me letters? My name is Colette," she said.

Mum explained that it was a nickname, but Colette quickly decided that it was weird and didn’t like it being used.

Mum took charge and politely said to Colette that she can asked to be called by her name if she doesn’t like the nickname.

Shortly after the exchange, her husband took their daughter Colette to visit his family, but received an angry phone call from her mother-in-law after the visit.

"She tells me that it was really rude for Colette to say she didn't like her nickname and that I shouldn't have told her to say that,” the mum explained.

"She said I was raising her to be bratty. She also said that Colette couldn't come over until she apologised and says that she likes being called Letters."

"That last part p***ed me off. I told her 'what the f***? You're banning a five-year-old from your house for not liking a stupid nickname'. Then I hung up on her."

Asking if she had overreacted to what happened, one Reddit user was quick to defend her daughter’s choice.

"Good for you for teaching your daughter to stand up for herself and for doubling down by standing up for her. MIL needs to apologise to the 5-year old for not respecting her name request,” one commenter said.

A second commented: "Your daughter is being more mature than her."

"I’m honestly just sort of in disbelief your mother-in-law could be old enough to be a grandma and act like that,” a third commenter said.

The sweet nickname Duchess Meghan is called in the palace

Princess Diana was famously known as the “People’s Princess” and now, with Duchess Meghan stealing the hearts of royalists around the world, the palace has given her a nickname previously belonging to her late mother-in-law.

Speaking to Vanity Fair, an insider close to the royal family said, “I’ve heard the Duchess is referred to as Di 2, because of the similarities to Harry’s mother. It’s meant affectionately, and I think it’s quite true – they are rather alike.”

Regardless of who Prince Harry chose as his wife, it’s inevitable that she would be compared to the royal’s late mother, who left behind a legacy and is considered the woman who broke down the royal walls and chose to bond with everyday citizens.

But despite that, Duchess Meghan has already proven to not only embody Diana through her wardrobe, as she chooses to wear her jewellery and similar dresses, but also through her kindness and her desire to bring change to the world.

Her rebellious nature is reminding the world of Princess Diana, who had a penchant to break protocol.

“I’m often reminded of Diana when I photograph Meghan,” said royal photographer Mark Stewart to Vanity Fair. “Their wardrobes are quite similar; Meghan loves great tailoring and block of colour, just like Diana did.

“I remember photographing Diana in Japan, when she stepped out in a red and white spotted outfit. Meghan’s wardrobe choices on this tour really reminded me of Diana’s, like the red dress she wore when she arrived in Tonga. It was pure Diana, honouring the national colours of the island before Meghan had even said a word.”

Throughout the Duke and Duchess’s 16-day tour, the Duchess of Sussex has been spotted wearing jewellery from Diana’s collection, such as the butterfly earrings she wore in Sydney and the beautiful aquamarine ring in Tonga.

“I don’t think we’ve seen a royal like Diana until now,” said Stewart about Meghan.

And while Meghan has a lot to live up to, the Duchess of Sussex may soon be titled the “People’s Duchess”.

Duchess Kate reveals the unique nickname Prince Harry has given her

The royal family really are just like us, with each member of the family having a special nickname of their own. With Queen Elizabeth being known as “Lilibeth”, Duchess Meghan as “Meg” and Duchess Camilla as “GaGa”, the tradition of nicknames has now extended to Duchess Kate.

Speaking to BBC Radio One, it was revealed that Prince Harry likes to call Duchess Kate, “Cath” – a short form of her full name Catherine.

Presenter Scott Mills asked, “That really confused me because everyone else calls you Kate – all the press call you Kate. Is this a thing just in the family?”

“I’m not sure, actually,” said the Duchess. “I’m not that familiar with it, I have to say. But I’ll answer to most things, to be honest.”

The Duchess has previously revealed her childhood nickname: Squeak – a name that she shared with her pet hamster.

Speaking to the children at St Andrew’s School in Pangbourne, Berkshire in 2012, she mentioned that, “There was one called Pip and one called Squeak because my sister was called Pippa and I was Squeak.”

Though in her later years, the Duchess was known to prefer the name Catherine when being referred to, a name that Prince William still calls her by.

Do you have a special nickname?
