Rare coin hidden for decades to fetch eye-watering sum

Three sisters from the US who inherited a dime coin kept it in a bank vault for more than 40 years, and while they know it had some value, they didn't know just how much until a few years ago. The rare coin, struck by the US Mint in San Francisco in 1975, could be worth more than $US500,000 ($748,000), according to Ian Russell, president of GreatCollections, the auction house selling the coin. What makes the coin depicting President Franklin D. Roosevelt so valuable is that it is just one of two coins missing the "S" mint mark for San Francisco. The other dime sold for $US682,000 (over $1 million) at a 2019 auction and then again months later to a private collector. While avid coin collectors have known about the existence of these two extraordinarily rare coins, their whereabouts had remained a mystery since the late 1970s. “They were hidden for decades,” Russell said. “Most major collectors and dealers have never seen one.” The three sisters from Ohio, who want to remain anonymous, inherited one of the two dimes after the recent death of their of their brother, Russell said. They told Russell that their brother and mother bought the first error coin discovered in 1978 for $27,225, which would amount to roughly $135,000 today. Their parents, who ran a dairy farm, saw the coin as a financial safety net, and it was only until last year that one of the sisters saw the coin first-hand. Russell also said that their brother had reached out to him about seven years ago and told him about the coin, but he too kept it a secret. When Russell told one of the sisters about the potential value of the coin, she told him: “is that really possible?”. The coin, known as the “1975 ‘no S’ proof dime,” will be displayed at a coin show beginning on Wednesday in Tampa, Florida, and before <a href="https://www.greatcollections.com/Coin/1655587" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the auction</a> closes late next month, Russell said. Woman “bullied” on plane over budget seating trick

A young woman has recalled a flight from hell when she was “bullied” by a couple who were trying to utilise a seating hack that went viral on TikTok. The solo traveller took to Reddit to recount the story and ask social media users if she was in the wrong for her action. The woman began by saying she usually pays more to select her plane seat ahead of time, but a medical emergency on another plane had her waiting on standby and left with no option other than to sit in a middle seat. When she was finally able to board, she was greeted by a couple who had purchased both the window and aisle seats in a bid to have more space, utilising a travel “trick” that has been popular on TikTok. The method, which has been dubbed the 'poor man's business class', usually leaves travellers with an empty middle seat and more space, and few travellers opt to pick a middle seat. “When I got to my row the man and woman were chatting and sharing a snack... it was obvious they were together. I mentioned to the man that I'm in the middle, and he got up to let me in,” the unsuspecting traveller wrote on Reddit. “I asked them if they would prefer to sit together, I said I was totally okay with that. The woman reacted rudely to this and said ‘you're not supposed to be sitting here anyway’.” After noticing how the plane was full, she offered to show the pair her new ticket with the correct seat number on it. “She flicked her hand at my ticket and made a disgusted sound. I offered again if they wanted to sit together to which she didn't reply, her partner said it's okay and... made some small talk,” she continued. The man’s girlfriend then interrupted their conversation to ask,”'Did you use one of those third party websites to book your flight? It's so frustrating when people cheap out to inconvenience others.” The American woman explained that she had booked her flight directly and she had been placed on standby like everyone else and didn't choose the middle seat - she was assigned it. She then tried to keep the peace by refusing to engage with the furious woman. “I was so done with her attitude, I put my headphones on and attempted to do my own thing,” she explained. But the “entitled” girlfriend wasn't letting it go, as the woman explained, “This woman kept reaching over me and tapping her partner and trying to talk to him in a way that was super intrusive.” “I could tell even her partner was trying to engage her less so that she would hopefully stop, but she didn't.” “I think they tried to pull that tactic where they don't sit together on purpose...hoping no one will sit between them. But on full flights it doesn't work. And even so - it's not the other person's fault.” The traveller's post was met with hundreds of comments slamming the girlfriend’s behaviour, as one person wrote, “It's like a toddler having a tantrum.” “She was disappointed and a total a**hole. Gross entitled people,” another added. Another person applauded the traveller’s level-headed behaviour, writing, “Wow! “Dig a hole in my chest”: Supermodel reveals double cancer fight

Supermodel icon Linda Evangelista has shared the devastating details of her cancer battle, after being diagnosed twice in five years. In a candid interview with <a href="https://www.wsj.com/style/fashion/linda-evangelista-steven-meisel-32909b7b?mod=style_lead_story" target="_blank" rel="noopener">WSJ magazine</a>, the 58-year-old revealed why she chose to "keep it quiet" and only tell a handful of people close to her about her health battle. Evangelista was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2018 after a routine mammogram, and decided to undergo a bilateral mastectomy: a surgical procedure to remove both breasts. "The margins were not good. [I chose this treatment] due to other health factors, without hesitation, because I wanted to put everything behind me and not to have to deal with this. "Thinking I was good and set for life. Breast cancer was not going to kill me." Four years later in 2022, Evangelista felt a lump on her chest and an MRI revealed cancer was present in her pectoral muscle. "I just went into this mode that I know how to do – just do what you've got to do and get through it," she said. "And that's what I did." "Dig a hole in my chest," she recalled telling her doctors. "I don't want it to look pretty. I want you to excavate. I want to see a hole in my chest when you're done. Do you understand me? I'm not dying from this." After another round of surgery, she was told the outlook was good for the future, but there is always a possibility the cancer could return. "Well, once it's come back, there's a chance," she recalled the oncologist's words. "I know I have one foot in the grave, but I'm totally in celebration mode." Mum left devastated after no guests attend her daughter’s party

A US woman has been left devastated after none of the 27 invited guests showed at her daughter’s third birthday party. Mum-of-three Breanna Strong had planned a massive celebration for her daughter, Avery, at KidsTopia Playground, a “jungle-themed indoor playground”, and had catered with pizzas, a Frozen-themed cake, and plenty of goodies for the kids. But, she was left devastated for her daughter when none of the kids turned up. Taking to TikTok, the 27-year-old shared her heartbreak in a clip that quickly went viral and prompted a flood of love to be sent Avery’s way. “We invited 27 kids to Avery's third birthday party. Not a single one of her friends showed up,” she wrote in the video, which showed the empty party room. “Money and time wasted. Breaks my momma heart so bad. Pizza, Frozen cake, and jungle gym. She didn’t know any different rather than having fun. Just shattered my heart,” Strong explained. Commenters were quick to share their support for the young girl, with some sharing that they had similar experiences with their children. “Let’s have a redo. Fence and digging marks at the centre of lion’s escape

A fence and digging marks are at the centre of an investigation into how five lions managed to escape their enclosure at Taronga Zoo. One lion and four cubs were roaming around the Sydney tourist destination prompting emergency alarms to go off and people to run to safety. A family who was sleeping overnight at the zoo as part of the “Roar and Snoar” program were ordered to run as alarms blared “code one”. Luckily no one was injured and the lions are back in their enclosure with a statement revealing what caused the animals to escape. “An initial review of this morning’s incident has confirmed that an integrity issue with a containment fence enabled five lions to temporarily exit their main exhibit,” Taronga said in a statement on Wednesday afternoon. “The lions are now in a back-of-house holding area while a full review continues. “A full report will now be prepared for the NSW Department of Primary Industries. “Keepers and vets report all lions are doing well. “Taronga Zoo remains open and is extremely grateful to its staff and the community for their support today.” Image: Nine

Sir Elton John and his husband David Furnish have set their sights on their new home: a yet-to-be-completed penthouse in Toronto. In a recent interview with Globe and Mail, the couple revealed that they had bought one of the bespoke penthouses in the King Toronto complex. The music icon and filmmaker have chosen an apartment called the “Treehouse”, as reported by <a href="https://storeys.com/a-condo-in-the-wind-inside-elton-john-new-toronto-penthouse/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Storeys</a>. Designed by Danish architect Bjarke Ingels, the complex includes six penthouses that are described as like “living on a mountaintop”, according to developer Westbank. While they are all custom-designed, all of the penthouses share a natural theme integrated using trees, foliage, and outdoor terraces - with the Treehouse even boasting an actual tree. The new two-storey home of the Rocket Man singer will also feature four terraces, an inner courtyard, and an interior that will include a wine cellar and curved sculptural staircase. “It has great views over the west and south,” says Riz Dhanji, president at Rad Marketing, who represents Westbank. “It has a unique tree in the middle of the unit as part of an artistic factor, a custom brass kitchen designed by Bjarke Ingels, and a stunning brass curved staircase that’s custom designed. Warnie's luxe digs sell for eye-watering price

The luxe $10 million apartment belonging to the late Shane Warne has reportedly been sold. Located in the deluxe Saint Moritz development in St Kilda, in Melbourne's east, the apartment features elements designed by the cricketer, including that No. 23, his Australian cricket shirt number, be embroidered on fittings throughout. According to the <a href="https://www.heraldsun.com.au/entertainment/page-13/shane-warnes-10m-st-moritz-st-kilda-apartment-sold-by-his-family-to-secret-buyer/news-story/59948beb2c3003f773c2f0be0f0e37a3" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Herald Sun</a>, Warne's family arranged for it to be on-sold to a private buyer. Paul McCartney takes a dig at the Rolling Stones in candid new interview

Legendary musician Sir Paul McCartney has reignited the rivalry between The Beatles and The Rolling Stones with a brutal burn in a recent interview. In an interview with The New Yorker this week, Sir McCartney said of the Stones, “I’m not sure I should say it, but they’re a blues cover band, that’s sort of what the Stones are.” Of his own band, he said, ”I think our net was cast a bit wider than theirs.” This isn’t the first time McCartney, 79, has described the Stones this way; in an interview with Howard Stern last year, he said that he thought the Beatles were the better band, adding that the Stones, “are rooted in the blues. When they are writing stuff, it has to do with the blues. ”We had a little more influences... There’s a lot of differences and I love the Stones, but I’m with you. The Beatles were better.” Responding to his comments, Stones frontman Mick Jagger, 78, said in an interview with Zane Lowe, that there was “obviously no competition” between the two groups, and called McCartney a “sweetheart”. Jagger went on to describe what he saw as the fundamental difference between the two bands, saying, “The big difference, though, is, and sort of slightly seriously, is that the Rolling Stones is a big concert band in other decades and other areas when the Beatles never even did an arena tour, or Madison Square Garden with a decent sound system. “They broke up before that business started, the touring business for real.” The Beatles performed together from 1960 to 1970, while The Rolling Stones have been together for almost six decades since forming in 1962. Both being iconic 1960s rock bands, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones have always been compared, despite having vastly different sounds and career trajectories. Royals hit the red carpet at Bond world premiere

Daniel Craig’s final appearance as James Bond has received a royal debut, after Prince Charles, Camilla, Prince William, and Kate appeared at the film’s world premiere in London. No Time To Die, the 25th in the series of movies depicting the British spy’s heroics, was initially due for release in April 2020. But, after multiple delays due to the pandemic the long-awaited moment has been met with relief by Craig. “A year ago, this was just a dream,” he told reporters on the red carpet at the Royal Albert Hall. “It didn’t look like we would get here. But we have and I’m just happy that we’re here and we can celebrate with everybody,” he said. Lea Seydoux, who reprises her role as Dr Madeleine Swann, echoed the same relief. “It’s been such a crazy time for all of us,” she <a rel="noopener" href="https://7news.com.au/news/human-interest/royals-join-cast-of-bond-film-for-premiere-c-4096628" target="_blank">said</a>. “And now to celebrate, you know, with this film, to reunite. And it’s great. I’m really happy.” Appearing onstage before the screening, the 53-year-old dedicated the film to its cast, crew, producers, and frontline workers. “Just look at us and where we are,” Craig said. “To amazing cast and crew, MGM, Universal, [producers] Barbara [Broccoli], Michael [G. Wilson]. A lot of front-line workers here. [It’s] an honour for us - we’d like to dedicate this film to you this evening.” To thank them for their work during the pandemic, healthcare workers and members of the UK armed forces were also invited to Tuesday’s premiere. No Time To Die features Craig’s last appearance as 007, and when asked how he felt about leaving the role, he said: “I’m good. I’m really good about it.” As for his potential successor, Craig abruptly said: “Not my problem.” Also appearing at the star-studded event were official songwriters Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell, composer Hans Zimmer, screenwriters Neal Purvis, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and Robert Wade. The stars stunned with bold outfit choices, including Lashana Lynch in a bold yellow off-the-shoulder gown with a wide skirt, Craig in a pink velvet dinner jacket, and Rory Kinnear in a blood orange suit jacket with a black shirt and tie. Prince William arrived in an appropriate tuxedo and matching black tie, with Kate dressed in a sheer-panelled gown with gold sequin detailing. No Time to Die will FINALLY be released here in November

The latest James Bond movie, No Time to Die, was ready to be released in May of 2020 but with COVID lockdowns in place in many parts of the world, its release was delayed again and again but now finally, it will be released in Australia and New Zealand on the 11th November. The date for many other parts of the rest of the world is early October but unfortunately the movie is further delayed for Australia and New Zealand because of the continuing lockdowns we've been experiencing. There is no more iconic pairing of music and cinema than the likes of Goldfinger and Live And Let Die. Barty fumes as match suspended

Barty was well on her way to victory against Vera Zvonareva with some sizzling tennis in the first set which she won 6-1. But in the second set, the match was briefly suspended after the controversial electronic line-calling system crashed on Arthur Ashe Stadium, the centre court at the Flushing Meadows venue in New York. The 25-year-old spoke to the umpire after the annoying delay was announced and was heard on court microphones asking if human line judges could be brought onto court to replace the electronic system. Her request was denied as a result of the tournament not using any line judges this year. More relaxed after the match Later, when Barty was interviewed on the court after her match, she seemed much more relaxed and talked about her recent winning streak. “It has certainly been really enjoyable right from the start,” she said. Barty will now play 18-year-old Clara Tauson in the second round. The world No. 1 is chasing back-to-back grand slam titles after her historic win at Wimbledon. Mum “humiliated” and allegedly put on no-fly list over nappy change

A woman in the US has shared how she was “humiliated” by a flight attendant mid-flight while trying to discard her baby’s nappy in the rubbish. Farah Naz Khan, an endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolism doctor from Seattle, shared the ordeal on social media, including how she was yelled at by a flight attendant who was then “harassing” her in a call to her personal mobile number after the flight. “Anybody with connections at United Airlines? Had a horrific experience today with a flight attendant and then got a harassing phone call from the very same flight attendant,” Ms Khan wrote in a Facebook post, which she later edited to include the full story. “When I walked back to the front holding my diaper wipes container and ... the pad that we used to change my daughter’s diaper on, the flight attendant accosted me and said: ‘Did you just dispose of a diaper back there? That’s a biohazard’,” Ms Khan told <a rel="noopener" href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/seattle-woman-humiliated-flight-attendant-over-dirty-diaper-says-she-n1273777" target="_blank">NBC News</a>. Ms Khan said that she then asked whether he wanted her to retrieve the nappy and that the flight attendant said yes. Ms Khan continued to say the experience made her feel “humiliated” and “belittled”. After asking another flight attendant for a garbage bag to put the nappy in, she became angry when the attendant told her she hadn’t done anything wrong. After filing a customer service incident report once the plane landed, things took a bizarre turn. Later in the day, Ms Khan received a phone call from the flight attendant. “I recognised the voice,” she told NBC News. “He said, ‘Due to a biohazard incident on the plane today, we’ve placed you on the no-fly list’. “This made me very angry, because I suffered the humiliating experience … They are placing me on a no-fly list? “I also didn’t dispose of the diaper on the plane, even if it was considered a biohazard. I walked it off the plane and threw it away myself outside the flight.” She also accused the flight attendant of using “profanities” during the call. “[He said] ‘You people bring your children everywhere. Don’t you know that some people just want a peaceful flight and don’t want to listen to your effing children?’,” Ms Khan said. He also allegedly said to her: “I hear your obnoxious daughter in the background.” Ms Khan also shared her experience on Twitter, including the hashtag #racism. She said she didn’t believe she had been placed on the no-fly list, after she was able to fly back to Houston a few days later. Ms Khan confirmed she had heard from United Airlines, which uses Mesa Airlines to run regional services, but the conversation was “unsatisfying” as the airline could not say how the flight attendant obtained her phone number or whether he had been disciplined. In a statement, a Mesa spokesperson said: “The details as described by our customer do not meet the high standards that Mesa sets for our flight attendants and we are reviewing the matter.” Image: Facebook

Madeleine McCann case leads to German police digging in back garden

German police are currently investigating the disappearance of Madeleine McCann in Portugal in 2007 and have searched a garden plot in the city of Hannover in connection with their probe. Julia Meyer, a spokeswoman for the prosecutor's office in Braunschweig, confirmed to local media that police investigators had been at the garden plot since Monday. Meyer said she could not give any further details on the procedure, adding only that police would “still need some more time to finish.” At the time of writing, it is not clear what police believe might be at the site they are searching. “Despair and devastation”: John Edward's gut feeling about 9/11 weeks before it happened

John Edward, well known psychic medium, had a gut feeling he just couldn’t shake as he was in a ballroom back in 2001. He shared with <a rel="noopener" href="https://www.mamamia.com.au/john-edward-medium/?utm_source=Mamamia.com.au%20-%20All%20Newsletters&utm_campaign=b6079f2877-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_07_22_05_54&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_9dc62997a2-b6079f2877-211561537&mc_cid=b6079f2877&mc_eid=c10f87c072" target="_blank">Mamamia’s No Filter Podcast</a> about the weird sensation he felt as he ducked into a nearby lobby to take a phone call from a friend. “It was the most eerie, ominous, evil feeling. I can’t even tell you,” he said. “I get goose bumps as I tell you this. I looked around and I looked at the security guard, and then I remember looking everywhere around, and I just was like, ‘Oh’. “I walked out of the building, and I went to my wife. I go, ‘I need to talk to you… You have to find a new place [for the competition]; you can’t do it here next year.’ And she’s like, ‘What?’ I go, ‘I don’t want you to come down here. Go talk to your boss. You’ve got to get it moved’.” His wife was surprised at his sudden panic and kept pressing for an answer. “I go, ‘Death, despair and devastation’.” The nearby lobby he was standing in happened to be the World Trade Center. The feelings Edward felt that day in mid-August, 2001 – just weeks before tragedy struck on September 11 – sat with him for a long time. They reappeared when he was dining with friends and his wife, Sandra, suggested brunch at the World Trade Center restaurant, View of the World. It was here that Edward erupted. “I turned to her and snapped. I bit her head off, like a lunatic. She like looked at me, like, ‘I’m gonna be polite because we’re in front of other people right now, but I want to push your arse in front of an oncoming bus for the way you just spoke to me.’ “But I just really erupted. [I said] ‘There’s no way you’re getting me in that building! There’s no way I’m going up there.’ I can’t even convey to you how it came out. It was like a Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde moment. It was really weird.” Edward then spend the next days in a deep depression. It was so noticeable that even strangers, who recognised him from his show Crossing Over, asked him if he was OK. “I was really struggling. It was a debilitating doom-and-gloom feeling, like I didn’t want to get out of bed if I didn’t have to,” he said. It was only when Edward recorded an episode of CNN interview program Larry King Live that the fog within him lifted. The pair had spoken about loss, grief and how to cope. However, the following day was one that plunged the world into a state of shock and unease as two planes that were hijacked by al-Qaeda terrorists flew into the World Trade Center twin towers on September 11. The attack killed 2,977 people and reduced the buildings to toxic dust that still claims victims to this day. After the attack, Edward was contacted by several New Yorkers as well as people from the surrounding areas. “They literally said to me, ‘You were the last thing we watched, my husband and I. You were the last thing that we watched, us together. We had a conversation about grief. We had a conversation about the afterlife because of you. It was the last thing that we did.’"

Are you at risk? Data sharing amongst health apps is more common than you think

Some of the sensitive information you might share with a doctor, including your age, sex, medical conditions and current symptoms, are being shared with popular health apps. Although it’s easy to feel like these applications are helping you, a new study has found that the data that users input into these apps are being shared with third party entities. The study, published in the <a href="https://www.bmj.com/content/364/bmj.l920">British Medical Journal</a>, has found that user data from health-related mobile apps on the Android platform is routine and not transparent at all. The information that is put into these health apps can be shared with app developers, their parent companies and potentially dozens of third-party entities. Therefore, the information that you think is private ends up being distributed on a wide scale. Lead author of the report, Dr Quinn Grundy, said that health apps are a “booming market”, but is one with many privacy failings. She told <a href="https://www.abc.net.au/news/science/2019-03-21/health-apps-sharing-data-common-practice-study-finds/10923484">The ABC</a>: "I think many of us would expect that this kind of data should be treated differently," said Dr Grundy, an assistant professor at the University of Toronto. "Unfortunately, our study shows that that's not the case. These apps behave in much the same way as your fitness app, weather app or music app." Dr Grundy and colleagues at the University of Sydney examined 24 medicine related Android applications that are popular in Australia, North America and the United Kingdom. Some of these apps included ones that might remind you when to take a prescription. The researchers found that 19 out of 24 apps shared data outside of the application to a total of 55 different entities, owned by 46 parent companies. The information that was shared included users emails and device ID to medical conditions and drug lists. The researchers discovered that Amazon and Alphabet, the parent company of Google, received the highest volume of user data. This was closely followed by Microsoft. Dr Grundy explained that whilst most apps have a privacy policy and said that the data was stripped of identifying information, they described what was collected and shared in very general terms. "They wouldn't name specific third parties or why data was shared with them. But would say, 'we never sell your data, but we may shared anonymised, aggregated reports with third parties for legitimate business purposes'," she explained. Peter Hannay, an adjunct lecturer and security researcher at Edith Cowan University has offered a solution. "It's not a matter of 'swap to a different app'," he said. "It would be a matter of just not using those sorts of services at all." However, if you do want to use these services, he has some advice for that as well. "If the application is reminding you to take medication, I would try to find one that doesn't require permission to connect to the internet," he said. Ingredients: <ul> <li>1 cup of digestive biscuit crumbs</li> <li>4 ½ tablespoons of butter</li> <li>2 tablespoons of cold water</li> <li>1 ½ teaspoons of powdered gelatin, unflavoured</li> <li>2/3 cup of heavy cream</li> <li>225g of cream cheese</li> <li>¾ cup of powdered sugar</li> <li>¼ cup of sour cream</li> <li>1 ½ teaspoons of vanilla extract</li> <li>Extra blueberries for garnish</li> </ul> Sauce <ul> <li>1/3 cups of sugar</li> <li>2 ½ teaspoons of cornflour</li> <li>¼ cup of water</li> <li>1 tablespoon of lemon juice</li> <li>2 cups of blueberries</li> <li>1 tablespoon of butter</li> </ul> Method: <ol> <li>With aluminium foil, line a 20cm by 20cm baking dish (or for round cakes, as shown, use individual round baking dishes) leaving five-cm of foil overhanging and spray with cooking spray.</li> <li>In a bowl, mix together digestive biscuits and butter until thoroughly combined.</li> <li>Pour into dish and press to bottom, creating a base layer. Let chill.</li> <li>In a small bowl, sprinkle gelatin over water and let rest.</li> <li>In a separate bowl, whisk or electric mix heavy cream until heavy peaks form.</li> <li>In another bowl, mix cream cheese and powdered sugar, whipping until smooth. </li> <li>Add sour cream and vanilla.</li> <li>Take gelatin mixture and microwave for 25 seconds. Whisk until dissolved and let cool for less than three minutes.</li> <li>While mixing, pour gelatin into cream cheese mix. Add whipped cream and combine.</li> <li>Take cream cheese mix and spread it over the biscuit layer.</li> <li>Cover and chill for three hours. Cut into squares or remove from individual baking dishes.</li> <li>To make the sauce, in a saucepan mix together sugar and cornflour. Add water, lemon juice and blueberries.</li> <li>Cook over medium-high heat, bringing the mixture to a boil, stirring often.</li> <li>Once thickened, add butter and stir.</li> <li>Let cool and pour atop cheesecake. Hotel room key card holders are just as irritating for travellers as they are helpful because the moment you remove your card from the slot in your room, the electricity immediately cuts out. This makes it difficult to have your devices on charge when you pop outside or when you leave your partner to sleep in. However, there is an easy fix for this travel dilemma that went over everyone’s heads. Twitter user Katyagar Moonagon has revealed that you can place any card in the slot to turn the electricity on. “[I] wanted to charge my battery pack whilst I was I eating dinner, but needed my keycard,” she said.
