Papa Swift vs Paparazzi: Taylor Swift's dad accused of assault

In the midst of celebrations marking the conclusion of Taylor Swift's Eras tour in Sydney, an unexpected and troubling incident has emerged involving her father – Scott Swift.

The 71-year-old has been accused of assaulting an Australian photographer, Ben McDonald, in the early hours of Tuesday morning at a Sydney wharf in Neutral Bay.

According to reports confirmed by NSW Police, the alleged altercation occurred around 2:30am, following Taylor Swift's final performance in the city.

It's said that Taylor and her father had been enjoying post-show festivities when the incident took place, tarnishing what should have been a joyous occasion.

McDonald, who serves as the chief executive of Matrix Media Group, recounted the events to Daily Mail Australia, shedding light on the confrontation. He stated that Taylor and Scott arrived at the wharf after travelling from Homebush on a luxury superyacht named Quantum.

McDonald claims that after they disembarked, Scott allegedly 'charged' at him. McDonald originally thought that it was a security guard, and was surprised when he realised it was Taylor's dad.

"In 23 years of taking pictures, I have never seen anything like it," he told the Daily Mail. "He probably decided he needed to defend his daughter, for some reason... She got off the boat, she walked towards security guards who were shoving umbrellas in our faces, and then he charged."

Footage capturing the moments leading up to and following the alleged assault has surfaced, providing some insight into the incident. The video shows Taylor and her father walking up from the wharf, shielded by large umbrellas held by security guards. Amid the commotion, McDonald attempted to capture the scene, and was obstructed by the guards protecting Taylor and her companions, including Mr Swift.

In the aftermath, McDonald reported the incident to authorities. He did not sustain serious injuries, though he described experiencing discomfort and soreness on the left side of his face.

Images: YouTube

Harry opens up about his intrusive Aussie gap year

While opening up to London’s High Court as part of his phone hacking case against British tabloids, Prince Harry detailed his experiences in Australia in 2003 when the royal was in the country on his gap year.

The Duke of Sussex referenced two articles that were published at the time, alleging that private investigators had been hired by his family to keep an eye on him.

In his witness statement, he noted that a newspaper had run with the headline “Beach Bum Harry” for a story on his trip to a Noosa beach with some of his friends.

“It was a public beach, but not busy or popular so I’m unclear how anyone had known we were there, to be in the right place at the right time to take photographs. I wasn’t aware of anyone taking photographs at the time,’’ he explained, before sharing that locating the group would have been of a similar challenge level to “trying to find a needle in a haystack”.

But as the lawyer representing Mirror Group Newspapers pointed out, there was “no doubt that many photographers were prepared to look for that needle in a haystack”.

Harry had more to reveal from there, sharing his belief that the late Queen had sent “senior” members of Buckingham Palace’s aide team to monitor him while he was in Australia, all because of the “intrusion” of the paparazzi into his life.

“I only learnt recently that the Queen had asked one of her Assistant Private Secretaries to fly out to Noosa and take a house down the road from where I was staying,” he explained, “without me knowing.”

The second article was also released in 2003, and was one that claimed the young royal was “ready to quit Oz”. As Harry explained, it reported that he was “considering leaving Australia … because of the level of press intrusion I was experiencing.”

“The article includes a comment from a Palace spokesman expressing concern and disappointment about the treatment I was experiencing,” he said.

“I do recall that the Palace issued a statement, because the situation in Australia was awful for me and there was supposed to be an agreement that once I had done the press call on arrival, I would be left to get on with my gap year in private.

“I was a teenager, and this made it clear that there was nowhere in the world - not even the Australian outback - where I wouldn’t be hounded by the press or paparazzi.”

Images: Getty

Prince Harry’s "dangerous paparazzi pursuit" called into question

Photo agency Backgrid has spoken out against claims the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and Meghan’s mum, Doria Ragland were involved in a “near catastrophic car chase” with paparazzi after attending an awards ceremony in New York.

"At BACKGRID USA Inc., we value transparency and ethics in journalism, which include providing fair and factual responses to claims," Backgrid's statement reads.

"We are aware of Prince Harry's statement regarding an alleged 'near catastrophic car chase' involving himself, Meghan Markle, and her mother, in New York City on Tuesday night.”

"We want to clarify that we have received photos and videos of last night's events from four freelance photographers, three of whom were in cars and one of whom was riding a bicycle,” the statement continues.

"It is important to note that these photographers have a professional responsibility to cover newsworthy events and personalities, including public figures such as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.”

Backgrid went on to say that according to the accounts given to them by the freelance photographers, they were covering Harry and Meghan’s time in New York City, which included a potential dinner following the awards ceremony.

"They had no intention of causing any distress or harm, as their only tool was their cameras. A few of the photos even show Meghan Markle smiling inside a cab," the statement says.

"The photographers report that one of the four SUVs from Prince Harry's security escort was driving in a manner that could be perceived as reckless,” it says.

"The vehicle was seen blocking off streets, and in one video, it is shown being pulled over by the police," Backgrid reports in the statement.

"We understand that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's security detail had a job to do, and we respect their work," it continues.

"We do, however, want to point out that according to the photographers present, there were no near-collisions or near crashes during this incident. The photographers have reported feeling that the couple was not in immediate danger at any point.”

The alleged car chase occurred on May 17 after the trio attended the Women in Vision Awards, hosted at the Ziegfeld Ballroom.

"Last night, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex and Ms Ragland were involved in a near catastrophic car chase at the hands of a ring of highly aggressive paparazzi," a spokesperson for the couple said in a statement.

"This relentless pursuit, lasting over two hours, resulted in multiple near collisions involving other drivers on the road, pedestrians and two NYPD officers.

"While being a public figure comes with a level of interest from the public, it should never come at the cost of anyone's safety.

"Dissemination of these images, given the ways in which they were obtained, encourages a highly intrusive practice that is dangerous to all in involved.”

It was alleged the incident involved a half-dozen vehicles with blacked out windows and included some individuals driving the footpath, running red lights and reversing down a one-way street.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) released a short statement, dubbing it a “transport challenge”.

"The NYPD assisted the private security team protecting the Duke and Duchess of Sussex," they said.

"There were numerous photographers that made their transport challenging.

"The Duke and Duchess of Sussex arrived at their destination and there were no reported collisions, summonses, injuries, or arrests in regard.”

New York City Mayor Eric Adams said he was yet to receive a full briefing but labelled the pursuit as “reckless and irresponsible”, comparing it to Princess Diana’s 1997 death in a Paris car crash after being chased by paparazzi.

"You shouldn't be speeding anywhere, but this is a densely populated city, and I think all of us, I don't think there's many of us who don't recall how his mum died," Adams told reporters when asked about the incident.

"It's clear that the paparazzi want to get the right shot, they want to get the right story, but public safety must always be at the forefront," Adams said.

A member of the Sussexes’ security team, Chris Sanchez, referred to the incident as “chaotic” in an interview with CNN’s Max Foster.

"I have never seen, experienced anything like this," he said. "What we were dealing with was very chaotic. There were about a dozen vehicles: cars, scooters and bicycles.”

He also said the couple were scared but relieved when they returned to the apartment where they were staying, which is believed to be a friend’s private residence.

"The public were in jeopardy at several points. It could have been fatal," Sachez said.

A local law enforcement source also corroborated some of the Sussexes’ reports to CNN.

They said a group of paparazzi in cars, motorcycles and scooters followed the trio as they left the ceremony, where Meghan had accepted an award from the Ms Foundation, alongside Black Voters Matter co-founder LaTosha Brown.

Footage on social media showed Harry, Meghan and Ragland all leaving the Manhattan venue through the public exit, with lights flashing intensely as they got into a waiting SUV with cheering crowds behind barriers waving them off.

Another video posted by TMZ saw the couple in a yellow New York City cab, stuck in traffic several blocks away from the venue, as photographers recorded them through the windows. The taxi was being escorted by NYPD vehicles with flashing lights.

However, the taxi driver Sukhcharn Singh seemingly refutes the claims of a “near catastrophic car chase”.

Singh told The Washington Post he drove "Harry, Meghan, an older Black woman and one security guard" for a brief period, believed to be about 10 minutes.

“I don’t think I would call it a chase,” Singh said. “I never felt like I was in danger. It wasn’t like a car chase in a movie.

“They were quiet and seemed scared but it’s New York – it’s safe.”

Singh did confirm the trio were being followed.

“They kept following us and were coming next to the car. They took pictures as we stopped and were filming us.”

When asked by the BBC if there was a “near-catastrophic chase”, he said, “I don’t think that’s true. I think that’s all exaggerated.”

Singh later spoke on Piers Morgan’s Sky News Australia program Uncensored and gave more insight into what happened when the royals and Ms Ragland got into his cab.

He said they were about to inform him of their destination address before paparazzi surrounded his vehicle, which was being followed by a police escort.

“Prince Harry and his wife and another lady jumped into my cab. And they seemed very nervous,” he said.

“We went a block, we were blocked by a [garbage] truck and then all of a sudden paparazzi just came out of nowhere and flashes just went off.

“They were just about to say the location where they were going to go but then the paparazzis came and the security guard said, ‘Hey listen – just circle back to the precinct’.”

Singh said he spent about 15 minutes with the royals who paid him a $US50 tip on top of the $US17 fare.

“I’ve had other celebrities in my cab as well but this one, they completely surrounded the car and just went crazy with the camera,” he said.

“We just went around the block and two cars were tailing us, behind us, with the camera and that was it.

“I don’t know what they went through, right, because I only had interaction with them for 15 minutes and they seemed very nervous when they were in my cab.”

When asked whether it was a two-hour car chase, Singh responded, “That must have happened before me.”

“You are disgusting”: Prince William accuses man of stalking his children

The Cambridges seem to be embroiled in a row with YouTube, after the family claim a video that breaches their privacy has been viewed thousands of times despite attempts to block it.

The video, which clocked 20,000 views on Monday according to the NZ Herald, shows Prince William confronting a photographer after he was filmed on a bike ride with his family near Sandringham, Norfolk, sometime last year.

William is seen reproaching the man, who was videoing the prince, while Kate and their three children are off-camera nearby.

Obsessed with Prince William kicking off pic.twitter.com/NgKgyU5eLZ

— I Don't Know Her (@l_dont_know_her) June 27, 2022

“If you want to have this altercation we can have this altercation,” William says in the clip, while appearing to be calling someone on his mobile phone.

Kate can be heard in the background, telling the man, “We came with our children.”

“I know, I know, I just realised who it was and I’ve stopped,” the man said.

“You didn’t, you’re out here looking for us,” William replied.

“You drove past us outside our house, I saw you,” Kate said, which the man denied doing.

The man claimed he wasn’t following the family, to which William replies: “Yes you are, you are stalking around here looking for our children”.

The Duke of Cambridge then references the incident where the man followed the family while on a bike ride, lashing out when the man denies following them.

“You are outrageous, you are disgusting, you really are. How dare you behave like that,” William says.

The short clip was uploaded over the weekend, over a year after the incident occurred.

Kensington Palace has responded by claiming the clip is a breach of the family’s privacy, with William shown to be on a private bike ride with his family, who were blurred out in the video.

It is understood that staff are seeking the removal of the video in line with their usual policy about privacy, which seems to have been successful as of publication.

However, versions of the clip continue to circulate on other social media platforms, including TikTok and Twitter.

The balance between William’s family’s privacy and their roles in the public eye is something he has spent many years negotiating with the British media, in which he has authorised a small number of photographs of the children to be released each year while insisting on otherwise total privacy.

Traditional British print media doesn’t publish videos or photos of the royal family in private situations, particularly when Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis are involved.

But images are often posted on social media and sold to European publications working under different laws.

A spokesperson for YouTube is yet to comment on the situation.

Image: Twitter

Alec Baldwin and his wife Hilaria have spoken out about the shooting of Halyna Hutchins in a fiery exchange with paparazzi.

The 63-year-old actor spoke to a group of local media on Saturday while staying in Vermont, which quickly turned into a very tense conversation.

Alec said he was unable to give any details on the ongoing investigation into Halyna's death, citing instructions from the Santa Fe Country Sheriff’s Office, but he did speak about his relationship with the cinematographer.

“It’s an active investigation in terms of a woman dying,” he said.

“She was my friend. The day I arrived on set and started shooting I took her to dinner with Joel, the director."

“We were a very, very well-oiled crew shooting a film together and then this horrible event happened.”

One of the paparazzi began to ask Alec about the meeting he had with Halyna's husband and son, but forgot her name while phrasing the question.

This action sparked a furious response from Baldwin's wife Hilaria.

“Halyna, her name is Halyna,” she said.

“If you are spending this much time waiting for us you should know her name.”

“You don’t know her name?” said Baldwin, before confirming he had met with Ms Hutchins’ husband Matthew and her nine-year-old son.

“I wouldn’t know how to characterise it. They’re mortified,” he said.

Hilaria interrupted again, saying, “You guys, you guys. You know what, no details.”

Alec then turned to her and said, “Do me a favour, I am going to answer the questions.”

After a few more questions, Baldwin asks the paparazzi to leave him alone, saying "my kids are in the car crying".

“As a courtesy I came to talk to you. I am not allowed to comment on the investigation, I talk to the cops every day,” he said.

“We sat down as a courtesy to talk to you, now please, would you just stop following us. Just leave us alone. We gave you everything.”

The accidental shooting took place on the film set of Rust in New Mexico on October 21st, as Alec fired a gun that killed Halyna Hutchins and injured the film's director Joel Souza.

Both assistant director David Halls and armourer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed have been questioned as part of the investigation into how Baldwin ended up handling a gun loaded with live ammunition.

"Not going to stop until she dies": Prince Harry slams paparazzi about Meghan Markle

And now look what’s happened.”

“You want to talk about history repeating itself? They’re not going to stop until she (Meghan) dies,” Harry added.

“It’s incredibly triggering to potentially lose another woman in my life. The list is growing. Showing one tenth of the emotion that everyone else was showing.

“I was like, ‘This was my mum. You never even met her’.”

“I don’t want to think about her, because if I think about her it’s going to bring up the fact that I can’t bring her back,” Harry said.

“It’s just going to make me sad. What’s the point of thinking about something sad, what’s the point of thinking about someone you’ve lost and you’re never going to get back again.

“I was so angry with what happened. And the fact that there was no justice, at all, nothing came from that.

“The same people that chased her into the tunnel, photographed her dying on the back seat of that car.”

Princess Diana once hid out at Kurt Russell’s home to escape paparazzi

During her short lifetime, Princess Diana was constantly hounded by the paparazzi. As we’re all too aware of now, this harassment caused her a great deal of stress, but what has only been recently made public knowledge, Diana would frequently hide out in Kurt Russell’s Colorado home.

At the royal premiere of Backdraft in London in 1991, Diana confided in Kurt about how difficult the paparazzi had become. Kurt offered up his 70-acre estate he shares with Goldie Hawn so that Princess Diana and her sons, William and Harry, could have "a nice getaway."

During an appearance on The Late Late Show earlier this month, Kurt spoke about how he and Hawn wound up lending their home to Princess Diana in 1995.

"Years later [Duchess of York Sarah Ferguson], who Goldie knows, worked it out," Kurt said. "I guess Diana wanted to go with the boys and so they were welcome, and they came and stayed for 10 days at the ranch, and they had a good time.”

At the time, Goldie's publicist denied the royal family were staying at their home, but there had been sightings of a then 13-year-old Prince William and 10-year-old Prince Harry enjoying the great outdoors in Aspen.

While Kurt and Goldie weren't staying at the property during Diana's visit, the star said at least one person bonded with the princess.

"Our housekeeper Bonnie became very close with her and every Christmas she'd get a nice Christmas card from Diana," he said.

Related links:

The cast of Grease: Where are they now?

Top 10 classic horror movies of all-time

The most hilarious Bond gadgets ever
