Woman baffled by mother-in-law’s insane ask over baby name

A woman has gone head-to-head with her mother-in-law over the name she has chosen for her unborn child.

The pregnant woman took to Reddit to share her unusual predicament, explaining how her mother-in-law has demanded she change the name of her baby.

The soon-to-be mum shared how she recently had dinner with her husband’s family, where she decided to reveal the baby’s gender and name.

She had been keeping the information secret, but with only a few weeks of her pregnancy left, she decided to share the happy news that she was having a baby boy and had chosen the name Shawn for her son.

But not everyone shared her happiness over the moniker, as her mother-in-law went pale with shock and demanded she choose a new name.

“My in-laws got quiet for a moment before asking if there were other options we'd considered. Apparently, Shawn is the name of my 17-year-old sister-in-law Ashley's former bully who tormented her [for years],” the pregnant woman explained on Reddit.

While she empathised with her in-laws, she didn’t want to change the name as it was the only one her and her husband agreed on for their son.

She also explained that she hadn’t known about the family connection when they picked the name, and hadn’t picked it out of any malicious intent.

“We took forever to pick a name,” she said. “Shawn is the only one we could agree on.”

The dinner party soon ended after the argument began, but the mother-in-law didn’t back down, sending the expecting mum demanding messages.

“She texted me and my husband again to ask us to find a new name for Ashley's sake.”

“Would I be the a**hole for not wanting to change it? We were only able to agree on it a few weeks ago.”

Commenters were torn over the subject, with many rushing to the pregnant woman’s defence, saying she can pick whatever name she wants for her son.

“My spouse and sibling have the same name. Somehow, you just compartmentalise it,” one shared.

“I feel like if a new baby in my family shared a name with my bully I'd just adapt,” another wrote. “After all, Shawn is a VERY common name, so I can't freak out every time I hear it and survive in this world.”

However, a select few sided with the mother-in-law, sharing how stunned they were that the couple couldn't find enough compassion to pick another name.

One person said, “I understand the difficulty of finding a name that feels right, but for me, after learning this, Shawn would quickly become another name that didn't work. It's only been decided on it for a few weeks so I'd just go back to the drawing board.”

Major Cruise line scraps entire season

Virgin Voyages has cancelled all of its sailings in Australia and New Zealand for the next year after they were left with "no choice" in the wake of escalating tensions in the Red Sea.

The Resilient Lady ship will not return Down Under for its promised second sailing season next summer due to safety concerns following a series of strikes on container ships in the Red Sea.

The cruise line revealed on Tuesday that a lengthier alternative return route around Africa was not viable for the company.

"On the heels of these recent changes and based on the regional and government advice we have received, we remain very concerned about potential escalations in the Red Sea over the next 12 months," a spokesperson from Virgin Voyages said.

“This significant and ongoing conflict puts unacceptable risks for safe passage through the region for our Sailors, crew and vessel."

“To say that we are disappointed to have come to this tough conclusion is an understatement.

“These adjustments are happening now to minimise potential future disruption to our passengers’ holiday plans, knowing there is a high likelihood that changes would need to happen in the future.”

The cancellations will impact customers with trips planned in late 2024 and early 2025 on repositioning voyages between Europe and Australia.

Virgin Voyages have indicated that a return to Australian waters will remain a possibility, as they continue to look for available options.

They also said that if the 2024/25 can go ahead, customers who had previously booked their holiday will be prioritised if they would like to re-book.

Currently, impacted customers have the option to re-book a different trip or request a full refund.

A few other cruise companies who operate seasonal sailings or world cruises through the Red Sea and Suez Canal have also had to cancel, reposition, or re-route their sailings.

MSC have cancelled three repositioning sailings in April, while Cunard, Princess and Seabourn have re-routed their world cruises to avoid the Suez Canal.

Image: Virgin Voyages

“My sister-in-law announced she was pregnant at my child’s funeral”

A woman has asked for advice on how to navigate her relationship with her sister-in-law, after the woman overheard an inappropriate conversation at her child’s funeral.

The grieving mother, a 28-year-old named Melissa, took to Reddit to share the heartbreaking story of how her toddler passed away after a battle with cancer.

Melissa described the time as the “hardest in my life”, explaining how she felt she lost “a part of herself” after the funeral.

While Melissa expected her toddlers’ memorial service to be difficult, she never predicted a family member would make it even harder.

The mother said that when she heard her sister-in-law telling people about her pregnancy, she thought the move was just cruel.

“She didn't make a big announcement but more than ten people at the service 'heard' and it's what everyone was talking about. To understate it, I was livid,” Melissa wrote on Reddit.

Melissa’s post then asked social media users for advice, as she was unsure how much of a relationship she wanted to have with her sister-in-law after the stunt.

The 28-year-old shared that she had fallen pregnant herself, and was facing pressure to have a party in celebration, but she didn’t want her whole family in attendance.

“I've been working on who I want to invite, and I really don't want my SIL there,” she said.

“Besides what she did, she's a vindictive and mean person and I cannot stand her.”

“I mentioned it to my husband and he says he couldn't care less whether she's there or not. But for the sake of saving face, I want opinions before I do this.”

She asked the online forum if she would be “an a**hole” for not inviting her, addin that she would still be inviting her husband's other sister and husband's brother's wife.

“The original SIL will be the only one not invited,” she clarified.

The post was flooded with comments as many backed up Melissa, slamming the sister-in-law for her selfish behaviour.

“I wouldn't want someone like that around me. Announcing a pregnancy at a child's funeral is insane,” one said.

“Cut her off and ignore everyone close to her. You are right to have nothing to do with her. She's totally classless.”

However, others encouraged her to have an adult conversation with her sister-in-law in an attempt to mend their relationship.

“Please let it go,” one person began. “This happened on a terrible day during a bad time for you. It's possible that could be clouding how you're looking at this, she may not have been malicious at all.”

Heavily pregnant mum and disabled child kicked off plane

Siobhan Foster, her husband, and their disabled child were kicked off their flight after she was accused of being "aggressive" by a flight attendant.

Foster, who is seven months pregnant, was onboard an easyJet flight to Ibiza to celebrate her brother's wedding.

She struggled to find room for her carry-on in the overhead baggage compartment, so she asked a flight attendant to help her find space, but the response was reportedly "a sharp ‘Clearly Not’", which eventually led to a dispute.

When things escalated, all 180 passengers were eventually told to disembark.

One of Foster's outraged friends posted the video on social media, and the Newtonabbey mum was seen collecting hand luggage while struggling to carry her toddler.

“We’re being thrown off the plane today because of somebody thinking they’re better than everyone else,” the friend said.

The easyJet stewardess responded: “Bye, bye bye," as the upset family walked down the stairs.

Foster took to Facebook to complain about her experience with "sleezy jet".

“So, I asked could you help me find somewhere, her reply was ‘You’ll need to find somewhere yourself’ even though there literally was nowhere," she wrote.

She then claimed that she asked for help again, because she was heavily pregnant, to which the flight attendant allegedly said: "You’re being abusive and it’s not my job to help you.”

Another flight attendant reportedly backed up her co-worker, but Foster argued that other airlines have been more helpful as she is pregnant.

“Writing this, I understand it would make you think was I being abusive, but I honestly wasn’t and the whole plane can vouch for me,” Foster wrote. “People were actually putting this on [Facebook] about how bad I was treated.”

After eventually finding a place for her bag, the pregnant mum was allegedly confronted by two other crew members who also accused her of being “aggressive.”

Foster decided to ignore them because she was "crying" and "so upset," but the flight attendant reportedly started raising her voice.

They were then kicked off, and were told it was because of Foster's aggression, but when Foster’s mum and brother asked for an exact reason, the crew members allegedly couldn't give them a direct response.

After an hour, everyone had to disembark and the family were met by eight police officers and two Swissport employees and were told they would not be allowed back on the flight, despite other passengers being allowed back in.

“So, that whole day we were in Belfast airport from one lunchtime to nine that night with our child, my legs were so swollen and sore with being on them all this time I was crying uncontrollably that this was happening to us for no reason whatsoever.

“I’m so traumatized to the point I don’t know how I’ll ever fly again,” she wrote on Facebook.

EasyJet has denied any wrongdoing and a spokesperson told the Daily Mail that "a group of passengers were "behaving disruptively."

“EasyJet’s cabin crew and ground agents are trained to assess and evaluate all situations and to act quickly and appropriately to ensure that the safety of the flight and other passengers is not compromised at any time.

“The Captain took the decision to ask all passengers on the flight to return to the terminal so the situation could be resolved and as soon as it was they re-boarded and the aircraft continued to Ibiza.”

Despite the incident, the Foster family eventually made it to Ibiza the next day, just in time for the wedding, after catching a RyanAir flight out of Dublin.

“Thankfully we got to Ibiza and made my brother’s wedding to say how stressed, upset, and overwhelmed I’ve been I honestly think I’ve no words,” she wrote.

“EasyJet should be ashamed of themselves and I most definitely am taking this further, I’m still in shock of how we were treated especially being seven months pregnant and having a disabled child with us.”

Images: Facebook

Tragic accident claims pregnant Hollyoaks actress at just 38

Former Hollyoaks actress, best known for her role at Jess Holt on the Channel 4 series, has died at 38.

The actress was reportedly travelling with her two sons and nephew when she stopped to answer a phone call on the M66 hard shoulder near Greater Manchester in the United Kingdom.

The 38 year old - who is believed to have been 18 weeks pregnant at the time of the incident - was then struck by a speeding vehicle. Frankie, her nine-year-old son Tommy and two-year-old Rocky, as well as her four-year-old nephew Tobias, were all airlifted to hospital.

The Mirror have reported that Tommy and Tobias were put into medically included comas, while Frankie sadly passed away with her partner, Calvin, “frantically by her side”.

The devastating crash occurred on May 14, but the news has only come to the public’s attention since Frankie’s former co-star, Paul Danan, paid a series of emotional tributes on social media.

Frankie had been on Hollyoaks between 2000 and 2001, where Paul had had the honour of playing her character’s boyfriend, Sol Patrick.

Paul shared pictures of their time together working on Hollyoaks, as well as some more recent pictures of his late friend, along with the caption “I just heard the most shocking upsetting news I've heard in such a long time.

“Another good good friend who was such a special person has sadly passed away while carrying her unborn baby and her 2 little boys and nephew who were in the car too. They had a terrible car accident.”

He went on to share that the driver responsible for the crash had been charged, before linking the GoFundMe that had been set up to support Frankie’s loved ones and “to help them get through the most traumatic incident they have been through.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Paul L Danan (@pauldanan)

He later shared another series of images and a new caption, writing of his heartbreak over how “Frankie will never get to see her family again” and how “her unborn child … never even got a chance in life, let alone her two little Gorgeous boys and nephew [who] won't see their mum or aunty again.”

Paul wrote that his “heart and prayers” went out to Frankie’s boys and her husband, and added that the horrific news “just solidifies things for me about driving dangerously or fast especially when not in a good head space. "You go for a wee, I'm gonna stall": Harry Styles stops mid-concert for pregnant fan

Harry Styles has proven once again that he is nicest man in the world after halting his concert so a pregnant fan could use the bathroom.

Performing in Cardiff in Wales, the 29-year-old pop star was interacting with the crowd when he singled out expectant mother Sian and her partner Elliot.

The woman had asked Styles to help her name her unborn child, with the former One Direction member happy to oblige.

However, before they began to brainstorm names, Sian admitted pregnancy was taking its toll while she stood in the massive stadium, and needed to use the bathroom.

Styles acknowledged her predicament, telling the crowd, "I think we all agree that it's important that Sian goes for a wee don't we?"

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Harry Styles Updates ♡︎ (@harry_update)

The star then told her, "Do you know what I'm gonna do this one time? Pregnant woman’s plane dilemma sparks debate

In a tale as old as modern time, the internet has erupted over a tweet.

When professional American baseball player Anthony Bass shared his wife Sydney Rae Bass’s in-flight trouble to Twitter, he was expecting an outpouring of support, and perhaps an answer from the airline.

Instead, he generated a heated debate over plane etiquette, entitlement, and the responsibilities of parenting - namely, cleaning up after your own kids.

In the viral tweet, Anthony - who was not with his family at the time of the incident - wrote that a flight attendant had made the 22-week pregnant Sydney “get on her hands and knees” to clean up the mess their 2-year-old daughter had made with her popcorn.

The flight attendant @united just made my 22 week pregnant wife traveling with a 5 year old and 2 year old get on her hands and knees to pick up the popcorn mess by my youngest daughter. Are you kidding me?!?! pic.twitter.com/vLYyLyJC54

— Anthony Bass (@AnthonyBass52) April 16, 2023

The airline was quick to ask Anthony for more information in the comment section, but with over 70 million views - and counting - and 10,000 likes, many had questions. And because it was the internet, where filters tend to fall to the wayside, people had no qualms about sharing their opinion with the irate father.

“Genuinely curious who should clean up the mess your 2 year old made?” one asked him. “As a parent of three kids I am the one responsible for them.”

Anthony, who was having none of it, fired back, “The cleaning crew they hire!”

“It's called being considerate,” someone else pointed out, “and we all know planes don't get thoroughly cleaned during a day of flying.”

In one popular response, one user reminded the sports star that “just because you’re rich doesn’t mean everyone is your servant. I hope this helps.”

One former flight attendant chimed in as well, telling Anthony that “a flight attendant is there for safety, not to pick up after you or your children.”

“Shouldn't have even had to ask, TBH [to be honest],” another said.

“I have three kids, just flew coach 12 hours, and was able to clean up after them - for every mess. It’s called parenting,” one shared. “Do you expect park janitors to clean up after your pet? No; Your child, your responsibility.”

Although the majority were in agreement that it was “the most pretentious, arrogant, self-absorbed tweet of all time”, there were still those in Anthony’s corner.

As one such supporter wrote, “I think it’s disgusting that the stewardess made a pregnant woman clean up a mess if they’re going to supply popcorn on the aeroplane. Be ready for messes to clean up if you don’t like it, don’t serve popcorn.”

Perhaps the loudest - and most passionate - on their team was Sydney Rae’s sister, Jessie James Decker.

The country singer and reality TV star took to Instagram to share her thoughts in a now expired story, where she wrote that she had just received a text from Sydney from her flight, and “as you know, she is five months pregnant, high-risk, and also travelling alone with her two small children.

“Blaire [their 2-year-old] accidentally spilled some popcorn in the aisle, and the flight attendant came up to Sydney with a trash bag and a wet wipe, telling her the captain wants Syd to clean up every drop.

"My poor sister is on her hands and knees, crying in the aisle, completely humiliated and exhausted, with her children while everyone else watched.”

Images: Twitter

Elderly pizza lady receives $390k tip after falling during delivery

Barbara Gillespie was completing a typical Friday night pizza delivery when things took an unexpected turn.

The 72 year old had just made her way up a home’s front veranda stairs, arms laden with her pizza boxes, when she stumbled and fell on to a small white chair.

The family, whose security camera captured the entire tumble, came outside to see what had happened as the elderly driver was picking herself up from the ground.

On shaky legs, Barbara apologised again and again for what had become of the family’s food, telling them that she’d “ruined” it. But the family - otherwise known as the Keighrons - were only concerned about her.

“I opened the door and there she is, just laying on the ground trying to get up,” Kevin Keighron said on Good Morning America. “She was more worried about the food than anything else. And I was like, ‘I don't care about the food. I care about you’.”

Kevin and his wife, Lacey, described Barbara as being “the sweetest”, and after the incident - which occurred in early February - the pair decided to set up a GoFundMe to give Barbara a “tip” for her hard work.

“We would like to bless her by bringing by a ‘tip’ to help her with anything she may need,” Kevin said. “She is an older woman who fell and only cared about the food she dropped.

“Let’s show her some kindness and take off some of this burden that our economy is causing the older generations especially!”

More than 14,000 people donated, and the fundraiser achieved a whopping $390,000.

“We thought we would get her a bigger tip and bring it to her. We never expected to get as much as we did,” Kevin said of their successful campaign. “We were just so excited and thrilled to be able to tell her the next day.”

And when taking the surprise to Barbara, Kevin - Lacey, and two of their children - decided to make the grand reveal at her work. They later shared footage of the reunion to their TikTok account.

They have since shared that with the extra funds, Barbara was able to put in her two-week notice and finally enjoy her well-deserved retirement.

Barbara said that the generosity of everyone involved was overwhelming, and admitted she was close to giving up on people because some of them can be “so mean.”

“And here we got loving, caring people. They care about someone else” she declared, seemingly delighted to have had her mind so thoroughly changed, “about an elderly woman.”

Images: TikTok

Prince William's godmother resigns amid racism row

Prince William's godmother and Queen Elizabeth's lady-in-waiting has resigned from her royal position after making "unacceptable comments" towards a black guest at Buckingham Palace.

The incident reportedly took place earlier this week, when Camilla, Queen Consort was joined by Crown Princess Mary of Denmark, Queen Mathilde of Belgium and Queen Rania of Jordan at an event to highlight domestic violence survivors and charities.

Ngozi Fulani, chief executive of Sistah Space, was invited to the afternoon reception at the palace through Safe Lives, a charity the Queen Consort is patron of.

The next day, Fulani took to social media where she detailed an exchange with Lady Susan Hussey, saying the woman repeatedly asked where she was "really from", saying "this event remains a blur after the violation".

Mixed feelings about yesterday's visit to Buckingham Palace. 10 mins after arriving, a member of staff, Lady SH, approached me, moved my hair to see my name badge. "It's really special": Grandmother volunteers as surrogate for her son's child

The Hauck family is looking forward to welcoming another child into their family later this year, but under very unusual circumstances

Jeff and Cambria are parents to four children, who they had through IVF, and wanted one more baby to complete their family.

But after Cambria needed a hysterectomy after their last child was born, they had to contemplate using a surrogate.

“Cambria needed an emergency hysterectomy after having our boys,” her husband Jeff Hauck told NBC.

“We knew if we were going to be able to have any more of our embryos we would have to use a gestational carrier,” he said.

Enter: Jeff's mum Nancy.

The 56-year-old grandmother stepped up and offered to carry the couple's last embryo, as she became pregnant with her own granddaughter after several appointments with a fertility specialist and a complicated embryo transfer.

“Bringing another strong baby girl to our family, it’s just really special,” she said.

Despite not being pregnant in 26 years, Nancy said the pregnancy is going well and her body is handling the symptoms with ease.

“I am feeling great, surprisingly, and just like I did when I was younger and expecting,” she said.

The couple said the experience of getting their daughter here has been an incredible journey, and are eternally grateful to Nancy for her selflessness in carrying their child.

“It’s been so incredible to be part of this experience with her. I am eternally grateful,” Cambria said.

Just a couple of days after the embryo transfer, Nancy said she woke up in the middle of the night and heard a sweet voice clearly say, “Hi, my name is Hannah.”

Because of that experience, the couple has decided to name their daughter Hannah.

“Hannah means favour or grace which sums up the whole experience perfectly in every definition of the words! Nancy is doing this eternal ‘favour’ for our family. The way it all came to be has been through the grace of God,” Cambria said.

Royal biographer hints at Queen's cause of death

A royal expert claims Queen Elizabeth II was suffering from a “relatively painless” but “invariably fatal” condition before announcing her death 90 minutes before Buckingham Palace.

In a video uploaded to YouTube at 5pm local time (4am NZST), controversial royal biographer Lady Colin Campbell claimed the Queen had passed away at 2.37pm (1.37am NZST).

Buckingham Palace announced the monarch’s passing 90 minutes later, at around 6.30pm UK time.

Her announcement came at the end of a lengthy clip where the royal expert spoke about a condition the Queen was allegedly suffering from.

Lady Campbell, who is most well-known for her books about Princess Diana and the Queen Mother, claimed that Her Majesty was suffering from a serious bone condition, though she wouldn’t reveal “the word that accurately conveys her diagnosis” out of respect for her “dignity and privacy”.

“If she wants to reveal that word, or her advisors wish to reveal it, that is up to them. I don’t think one needs to use the word to get across the point that I think most people will be able to pick up, that this is a really serious situation,” Lady Campbell said in the video, prior to announcing the monarch’s passing.

“The condition has been induced, in part, according to people who know her well, has been created by the tremendous stress to which she has been subjected over the last three years.”

The Palace has not confirmed the Queen’s cause of death.

“Can you imagine an older woman, as her life is winding down, and she is hoping to enjoy the last few years of her life in good health being bombarded by the tremendous abuse to which she and the monarchy have been subjected,” Lady Campbell said.

She went on to say she had tried to warn people that the Queen was “far more ill than they thought she was” over the past few months.

“I have on several occasions in the last few weeks, if not months, made the point that she had been affected to her bones. I used that repeatedly to get across the point that what she was suffering from was a malady of the bones,” she continued.

“There are two maladies of the bones, one is more painful than the other. Fortunately the Queen’s malady, although it falls in the same category and condition of the more painful one, has been the less painful one.

“It has been restrictive, and I will not go into the medical treatments she has been receiving. I have previously indicated that her bruising was due to cannulas and I have left it at that.”

After the video cuts away, Lady Campell continued filming, claiming she had found out about the Queen’s passing.

“Having just made this video it is with great sadness that I have to inform you that events have yet again overtaken one’s plans, and I am reliably informed that the Queen died at 14.37pm this afternoon,” she said.

“And that the reason why the announcement has not been made so far is that they are waiting for Harry and Meghan to arrive at Balmoral, after which the announcement will be made.”

Buckingham Palace went on to announce the news of Her Majesty’s passing before Harry arrived at Balmoral, while Meghan remained in London.

“I think we should be very grateful for having had such a wonderful monarch,” Lady Campbell continued.

“And I think we can be also grateful for the fact that her death was relatively painless. Bone cancer is not fun.

“But she was fortunate enough to have the lesser of the forms of bone cancer, and she kept her spirits and her vitality to practically the end.

“And now, I would say, my sympathies to all her loved ones, all her family, and really, all her subjects many of whom love her.”

However, the Courier Mail reported that medical experts said frailty and “geriatric syndrome” - a term describing a group of common health conditions older people experience that don’t fit in distinct disease categories - could have been contributors to her passing.

Her symptoms reportedly met five of seven criteria used by Britain’s NHS to classify people as frail, including being over 85, having ongoing health conditions, requiring regular help, being forced to cancel activities and using a walking stick.

In the hours before her death, a statement from Buckingham Palace said doctors were “concerned” for the Queen’s health and that she was “comfortable” at Balmoral.

Images: Getty Images / Lady Colin Campbell (YouTube)

Lady Louise Windsor has surprising new job

Lady Louise Windsor, one of Queen Elizabeth’s numerous grandchildren, has joined the thousands of young people in a tradition as old as time itself: getting a summer job.

Though she might be a royal, the 18-year-old’s new job is quite ordinary, with reports that she is earning £6.83 ($AU 11.68 or $NZ 13.03) at a garden centre.

According to The Sun, Lady Louise was spotted by a shopper, pruning and potting plants, as well as greeting customers and serving them behind the till.

The shopper described the daughter of Prince Edward and Sophie, the Countess of Wessex, as “modest”, “sweet” and “polite”.

“I couldn’t believe it was Lady Louise – I had to look twice,” the shopper told the newspaper.

“She is a really modest and sweet young woman who is polite and attentive to customers. She seemed to be loving the job.

“You’d never imagine the Queen’s granddaughter would take on a role working behind a till.”

It’s believed Lady Louise is working at the garden centre several days a week, with the news coming after a Buckingham Palace spokesperson confirmed she would be studying English at the University of St Andrew’s after finishing her A-levels in June.

Though she is 16th in line for the throne, Lady Louise and her brother, James, don’t use an HRH title, nor are they expected to carry out duties when they’re older.

As unexpected as the royal’s job appears, it seems to have delighted fans of the monarchy, with one fan telling The Sun: “It’s not every day you buy begonias off a royal.”

Image: Getty Images

Queen Elizabeth II in mourning

Queen Elizabeth II is in mourning after her life-long friend passed away.

Lady Myra Butter, a descendent of Tsar Nicholas I of Russia and poet, novelist and playwright, Alexander Pushkin, died “peacefully” at the age of 97 in London.

"Lady Butter was a daughter of Sir Harold and Lady Zia Wernher, and a granddaughter of Grand Duke Michael Mikhailovich of Russia and Countess de Torby,” managing editor of Majesty Magazine Joe Little wrote.

"Myra was a close friend of the Queen and Prince Philip since childhood and from time to time appeared in royal documentaries."

Lady Butter created the Pushkin award, which helped celebrate literary work in honour of her ancestor.

She was married to Sir David Butter to who she had five kids with - and the Queen was the godmother of their eldest child, Sandra Elizabeth Zia.

Lady Butter grew up with the Queen and her sister Princess Margaret, and spent their holidays together.

She was also a guest at the Queen’s wedding to Prince Philip, the late Duke of Edinburgh, in 1947.

“The war had been so grey that the royal wedding seemed to signify the world coming to life again,” Lady Butter previously told The Daily Mail.

"Everyone was determined to have a new dress for the day and I wore a blue ribbed silk dress by Dior. It was one of the first three-quarter length dresses, and I wore it with a feathered hat. I had new shoes and a bag, too – any excuse.

"All the people from the Commonwealth made the ceremony very colourful and the choir superb.

"The Princess looked truly glittering. Her dress was beautiful and she was obviously in love. Philip looked very dashing in his naval uniform – and it really did seem like a fairy tale wedding."

Images: Getty/ITV

Ukraine’s first lady sparks controversy with Vogue cover

Olena Zelenska, Ukraine’s First Lady, has sparked backlash after she appeared on a new ‘digital cover’ of Vogue with her husband, President Volodymyr Zelensky, amid the ongoing war with Russia.

The accompanying article, titled ‘Portrait of Bravery’, was created in collaboration between Ukrainian Vogue and the Conde Nast Vogues, featuring moody, graceful portraits of the First Lady taken by Annie Leibovitz, including one where she stands next to female soldiers at Antonov Airport.

Unlike her 2019 debut on the magazine’s cover, where she was styled in brands such as Prada, Lemaire and Jimmy Choo, this year’s feature sees her exclusively wear Ukrainian designers and a focus on the pain and trauma her country is currently experiencing.

With Vogue’s historical connections to elitism, wealth and frivolity, the sombre tone and focus on the realities of war in Ms Zelenska’s latest feature has prompted backlash from some who have labelled it as tasteless.

“While Ukraine is going through hell, Vogue is doing a photoshoot for the President & his wife,” columnist Amrita Bhinder wrote on Twitter.

US Republican Mayra Flores, a representative from Texas, was among a number of conservatives who jumped on the opportunity to attack the Biden administration for supporting Ukraine financially, insinuating it was funding vanity, as reported by The New York Times.

wartime vogue photo shoots. very serious. let’s keep sending ukraine weekly billion dollar aid packages to protect “democracy.” don’t question it. pic.twitter.com/MXVaW16K0y

— Logan Hall (@loganclarkhall) July 26, 2022

Others defended Ms Zelenska, arguing the photoshoot was a symbol for national pride and a means of raising awareness of the struggles facing Ukraine to audiences that might otherwise not be reached.

Supporters included Lesia Vasylenko, a Ukrainian MP, who tweeted that Ms Zelenska’s interview with Vogue was “about duty, keeping sane and staying together”.

“It’s about personal strength. Pregnant woman argues unborn baby counts as a passenger under new abortion laws

A pregnant US woman has argued her unborn baby should count as a second passenger in her car in the wake of Roe v Wade being overturned, after she was fined for driving in a lane that requires at least two people in the car.

Brandy Bottone of Plano, Texas, was pulled over on June 29 after driving in a high-occupancy (HOV) lane by the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department looking for drivers violating HOV lane rules, as reported by NBC-Dallas Fort Worth.

HOV lanes, also known as carpool and T2 lanes, require drivers to have at least one passenger in their car when they use the lane.

When an officer told Bottone about the rule and asked whether she had any passengers with her, she said she did.

“I pointed to my stomach and said, ‘My baby girl is right here. She is a person’,” the 32-year-old told The Dallas Morning News.

The officer argued that the rule applies to “two people outside the body”, to which Bottone responded that, since the overturning of Roe v. Wade, her unborn child is considered as a living person.

“And then I said, ‘Well [I’m] not trying to throw a political mix here, but with everything going on, this counts as a baby’,” Bottone recounted.

She said the officer told her he didn’t “want to deal with this”, insisting the law for HOV lanes required “two persons outside of the body” to be in the vehicle.

While the penal code in Texas recognises a foetus as a person, there appears to be no language in the state Transportation Department’s code that recognises a foetus in the same way.

Though deputies told Bottone that her case would likely be dismissed if she fought it, she still plans to fight the $215 ticket, arguing that her in-utero baby should count as another occupant.

“This has my blood boiling. How could this be fair? According to the new law, this is a life,” she told The Morning News.

“I know this may fall on deaf ears, but as a woman, this was shocking.”

Image: NBC DFW
