"It was a pretty nasty bang": Freddie Flintoff airlifted to hospital

Andrew “Freddie” Flintoff is recovering from a "nasty" accident while filming for Top Gear, according to his friend Piers Morgan.

The former English cricketer, 45, was airlifted to hospital on Tuesday after receiving medical care at the scene, following a crash at an aerodrome in Surrey.

Piers said he had spoken to Freddie's family, and said the TV host is remaining in good spirits.

“I’m told it was a pretty serious crash and that Freddie’s going to be OK, but it might be a little bit more serious than first appreciated,” he told talkSPORT.

“I’m told he’s going to be OK, which is great news, but I’m also told it was a pretty nasty bang and that he’s had surgery and is recovering now and we’ll have to wait and see."

“I’ve been in contact with them privately but I just want to wish him and his family – Rachael, his wife – all the very best and I think we’re all just keeping our fingers crossed that the big man comes through all right.”

It is understood that the crash did not happen at high speed, with all health and safety precautions said to have been in place.

The health and safety watchdog said it was “aware and making inquiries” after the BBC reported the incident, as was standard procedure.

A BBC spokesperson said at the time, “Freddie was injured in an accident at the Top Gear test track this morning, with crew medics attending the scene immediately. He has been taken to hospital for further treatment and we will confirm more details in due course.”

We can pretty accurately tell when a human or dog is happy, but not so much with aggression

Humans are terrible at understanding aggressive characteristics in dogs — and unfortunately, in other humans.

Being able to correctly interpret social interactions is an important skill that allows humans to react appropriately in different situations.

But, research from the Dog Studies Research group at the Max Planck Institute for Geoanthropology in Germany shows while we’re generally clued in to distinguishing the nature of social interactions between children, dogs, and monkeys, we suck at identifying negative behaviour in dogs and humans.

Researchers presented 96 adults with short video clips of aggressive, neutral, and playful interactions between two individuals in three different species: human children, dogs, and macaques.

The clips included clues, such as body postures and facial expressions, but ended before the interaction took place.

Half the study participants were asked to categorise the interaction as aggressive, neutral, or playful, while the other half were asked to predict the outcome from three sentences prepared by the experimenters describing the three possible outcomes.

The researchers found that people performed better than chance for both tasks, even without prior experiences with the non-human species.

They selected the correct choice of the three outcomes in 50–80% of interactions and were most accurate in categorising playful interactions, which they correctly identified 70% of the time.

This wasn’t the case for predicting aggressive outcomes in humans and in pooches in particular. Participants rated aggressive contexts among dogs at chance level, and predicted outcomes below chance level.

“It is possible that we are biased to assume good intentions from other humans and from ‘man’s best friend’,” says first author Dr Theresa Epperlein the DogStudies Research group in the Max Planck Institute for Geoanthropology, Germany.

“Perhaps this bias prevents us from recognising aggressive situations in these species.”

“Our results underscore the fact that social interactions can often be ambiguous and suggest that accurately predicting outcomes may be more advantageous than categorising emotional contexts,” adds senior author Dr Juliane Bräuer, DogStudies Research Group Leader.

The research has been published in the journal PLOS ONE.

This article was originally published on Cosmos Magazine and was written by Imma Perfetto.

Image: Getty Images

Glaring errors in fan favourite movies

You have to be a real cinema buff or at least excelled in high school English class to notice some glaring errors in popular movies.

TikTok user Don Farelli has done all the work and pointed out the mistakes left in fan favourites such as Pretty Woman, Gladiator, the 1985 flick Teen Wolf, and the 1995 movie Braveheart.

Up first is the 1990s blockbuster Pretty Woman starring Julia Roberts and Richard Geere.

In the scene, Julia’s character Vivian Ward is seen nibbling on a croissant as she tells Richard’s Edward Lewis that she didn’t go past 11th grade.

Suddenly, the croissant disappears and in its place is a pancake.

The swap in foods has been spotted a few times before and there are even unconfirmed reports from the director for the change.

"Director Garry Marshall said he liked the performance she gave in the latter part of the scene better, so the croissant magically becomes a pancake, which she began to eat as they did more takes,’ it reads on IMDB.

"While this may be the case, there is still a continuity issue. In the first scene with the pancake, she takes a second bite. In the next scene with the pancake in her hand, there is only one bite missing.

"Not only that, but the pancake with one bite missing has a different bite pattern and is clearly a different pancake."

Next up is Mel Gibson’s Braveheart, who is seen speaking to a fellow actor in a scene.

Upon closer inspection, a man in the background is seen wearing a baseball cap - which very obviously has no place in the film.

Similar to Gladiator starring Russel Crowe, which features two modern items which are very clearly not meant to be there.

In one scene, a man is seen wearing jeans which is not the wardrobe for the movie and another scene shows another extra moving a water bottle out of the way.

The final movie is Teen Wolf starring Michael J. Fox, which hilariously shows a man realising his zipper is undone and tries to cover it during a basketball game.

Don’s TikTok video received a whopping 1.7million likes and has been viewed more than 15million times.

Image: TikTok

Duchess Kate is pretty in polka dots on visit to children’s centre

The Duchess of Cambridge has stepped out Autumn ready at a surprise engagement at the Sunshine House Children and Young People’s Health and Development Centre in London.

Opting for a long-sleeved polka dot blouse, which she paired with cropped, wide-legged trousers, the mother-of-three looked picture perfect in her chic attire.

Her new hair colour, which she debuted earlier this month while dropping Princess Charlotte off on her first day of school, was styled in her signature blowout.

According to Kensington Palace, Kate visited Sunshine House to learn more about the Southwark Family Nurse Partnership National unit, a program in which “parents are partnered with a specially trained family nurse, who visits them regularly from early pregnancy until their child is two.”

The 37-year-old met with the team at Sunshine House, which supports young mothers and parents. And her visit was specifically to “further her research and engagement with the Early Years sector,” said Kensington Palace.

Recently, Kate has started to focus her attention of supporting families, mothers and young children.

The Duchess has a “really strong interest therefore in how you can support mothers and fathers in the earliest months of life of a child and during pregnancy in order to make sure that brain architecture was well supported,” Kate Stanley, the Director or Strategy for the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children to People magazine.

“And a real compassion about the challenges of that and desire to understand the experiences of the families that some of the people around the table work with.”

Scroll through the gallery above to see Kate’s chic ensemble.

Michael J Fox opens up about recent health struggles: "To get to that place is pretty dark"

Michael J Fox has opened up about his recent health struggles. The actor and comedian, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1991, revealed his new health problems in an interview with The NY Times.

“I was having the recurring problem with my spinal cord,” said the 57-year-old.

“I was told it was benign but if it stayed static I would have diminished feeling in my legs and difficulty moving. Then all of a sudden I started falling – a lot. It was getting ridiculous. I was trying to parse what was the Parkinson’s and what was the spinal thing.”

Fox revealed that he was heading for work in August 2018 when he fell and fractured his arm, resulting in him getting 19 pins and a plate to repair the bones.

While the Back To The Future star did not believe that these medical struggles happened “for a reason”, he said: “I do think the more unexpected something is, the more there is to learn from it. In my case, what was it that made me skip down the hallway to the kitchen thinking I was fine when I’d been in a wheelchair six months earlier?”

Michael J. Fox attends the 2018 Fan Expo Canada at Metro Toronto Convention Centre on August 31, 2018 in Toronto, Canada.

Fox is currently working on a book about his health journey. “I realized that the understanding I’d reached with Parkinson’s was sincere but risked being glib,” he said.

“I’d made peace with the disease but presumed others had that same relationship when they didn’t. Then when I started to deal with the effects from the spinal surgery, I realized: 'Wow, it can get a lot worse.'

“My health issues last year brought me to places where I started to say, ‘Was it false hope I’d been selling? Is there a line beyond which there is no consolation?’ For me to get to that place is pretty dark.”

Upon finding out his diagnosis at the age of 29, Fox took up numerous jobs in comedy films that turned out to be critical and commercial flops.

“I was so scared,” he said. “I’m fine now but back then I wasn’t in the ‘I’m fine now.’ I was in the ‘I’m going to be bad.’ That thinking didn’t allow me to trust that I could make a decision without worrying about time restrictions or financial pressures – which were inflated in my head.”

Fox said he only began to accept his disease in 1994 and went public with it in 1998. He went on to open the Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, a foundation dedicated to finding a cure for the disease, in 2000.

Barbara Streisand opens up: "I wasn't pretty enough to be harassed"

Barbara Streisand has revealed she’s never suffered sexual harassment in Hollywood, but has felt abused by the media.

In a wide-ranging interview with director, product and long-time admirer Ryan Murphy, Streisand spoke candidly about her career, the #MeToo movement and her aversion to interviews.

When asked if she had ever been sexually harassed or mistreated, Streisand replied: “Never”.

“I wasn’t like those pretty girls with those nice little noses. Maybe that’s why,” she added.

Of the #MeToo movement sweeping the entertainment industry, she said, “We’re in a strange time now in terms of men and women and the pendulum swinging this way and that way, and it’s going to have to come to the centre.”

She also opened up about her reluctance to speak to the media, which is based on years of what she labelled “inaccurate reporting”.

One particularly persistent story that Streisand labelled as false is that she has an “awards room” at home dedicated to her Oscars, Emmys and other trophies.

She also criticised the late American TV journalist Mike Wallace, recalling how when she was a young star (and before Wallace joined 60 Minutes) he asked her a series of hurtful questions during a TV interview and she had complained to him afterwards.

However, on a subsequent show Wallace told viewers who’d objected to his line questioning of Streisand that she “loved” the interview.

“I thought, I don’t know what date rape is, it’s terrible … but it was such a violation,” she said. “Why lie?”

The interview, which was part of a tribute to Streisand for the 35th annual PaleyFest LA television festival at the Dolby Theatre, ended with Murphy’s own personal tribute to the Funny Girl star.

“People talk about Barbra as the greatest female star. I say, no, that’s not enough,” Murphy said, adding, “She was a touchstone, a beacon I followed my entire life.”
