"I’m coming home from a party, and I don’t want to end up getting arrested": do driving apps help people break road rules?

<p><em><a href="https://theconversation.com/profiles/verity-truelove-1237331">Verity Truelove</a>, <a href="https://theconversation.com/institutions/university-of-the-sunshine-coast-1068">University of the Sunshine Coast</a>; <a href="https://theconversation.com/profiles/michelle-nicolls-1299069">Michelle Nicolls</a>, <a href="https://theconversation.com/institutions/university-of-the-sunshine-coast-1068">University of the Sunshine Coast</a>, and <a href="https://theconversation.com/profiles/oscar-oviedo-trespalacios-1417150">Oscar Oviedo-Trespalacios</a>, <a href="https://theconversation.com/institutions/delft-university-of-technology-1040">Delft University of Technology</a></em></p> <p>Apps such as Google Maps, Apple Maps and Waze can tell drivers when they are approaching speed cameras or random breath testing stations. Countries such as Germany, France and Switzerland have banned apps from displaying these enforcement locations.</p> <p>But what effect are these apps having in Australia – are they helping drivers break road rules?</p> <p>Our new <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0925753524002972">paper</a>, published in the journal Safety Science, examined this question.</p> <p>We found this technology can, in some cases, contribute to people thinking they are invincible on the roads. However, we also found they can sometimes help people drive more safely.</p> <h2>Being made aware of enforcement can help road safety</h2> <p>We conducted focus groups and interviews with a total of 58 drivers from Queensland, to understand how the use of this technology influences perceptions of being caught for breaking road rules.</p> <p>One driver told us: "If I know it’s coming up, I’ll put my phone down. If I was, say, texting or checking something, but then like once a good few 100 metres away, I sort of pick it up again, depending though."</p> <p>Another said: "It sort of depends where I am driving, I guess. Like, if I am driving on a country road and there is a speed camera there I would probably slow down for the speed camera and then sort of speed up again once I am sort of past that; it sort of depends on the circumstances."</p> <p>We also found that, for some people, being made aware of enforcement locations can help drivers better regulate their speed. This helped them comply with road rules more consistently.</p> <p>Waze also shows the speed limit in the area, which further assisted some drivers to stick to the speed limit. One driver told us: "I’m a bit careful if I just look at the speedo and just double check that I’m on the right amount of speed."</p> <p>Another said: "It just gives you a warning like, ‘OK, you need to check your speed.’ Just to double-check you’re going on the right speed perhaps or when it’s a camera coming up."</p> <h2>Concerning behaviours</h2> <p>Concerningly, we also found some drivers who use these apps are looking at and touching their screens more than they otherwise would. This can distract drivers and increase their <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0925753524001097">risk of crashing</a>.</p> <p>One driver told us they post traffic updates on the app they use while driving, “which I know is wrong.”</p> <p>Another said: "Just hit the button on the phone. Just two steps after I go past the camera."</p> <p>Another driver told us: "It’s so helpful […] Especially if it’s, say, late night and I’m coming home from a party, and I don’t want to end up getting arrested."</p> <p>One driver said: "I probably feel slightly more invincible, which is probably not a good thing."</p> <p>When asked why these apps are used, one driver said: "I guess the drug and the drink-driving."</p> <h2>Apps can help and hinder road safety</h2> <p>We know breaking road rules significantly contributes to <a href="https://www.who.int/teams/social-determinants-of-health/safety-and-mobility/global-status-report-on-road-safety-2023">crashes and road fatalities</a>, with deaths on Australian roads continuing to <a href="https://www.bitre.gov.au/publications/ongoing/road_deaths_australia_monthly_bulletins">increase</a> over time.</p> <p>On the one hand, when drivers are aware of enforcement measures like cameras and police, they are more likely to stop breaking the rules in those areas. That’s particularly true for behaviours such as speeding and using a phone while driving, we found.</p> <p>Using apps that flag where cameras and police are located also means drivers would be more exposed to enforcement activities than they otherwise would be on a normal drive.</p> <p>On the other hand, our results suggest some drivers are using these applications to break road rules more often in places where they think they won’t be caught.</p> <p>These apps are also not always completely accurate.</p> <p>For instance, even though Waze can display some police operation locations such as roadside breath testing, it can’t capture <em>all</em> on-road police activities. Influencer's windscreen smashed in wild road rage act

<p>Video footage has captured the scary moment a New Zealand influencer's windscreen got smashed in a wild road rage incident. </p> <p>Social media influencer Chantelle Baker claimed that the blue Mazda Demio had cut off another car behind her and began tailgating her when she was driving 40km/hr as she was carefully navigating a near-crash. </p> <p>“They started to scream at me from their car, trying to indicate [and] use their hands to tell me to pull over so they could go past,” she said in a video posted to Instagram. </p> <p>“I obviously didn’t. Dog care below freezing − how to keep your pet warm and safe from cold weather, road salt and more this winter

Visiting your favorite downtown café on a cool spring morning, going to a favorite dog park on a clear summer evening or going on walks along a river when the leaves are changing color are all wonderful when the weather is favorable. But in much of the country, when winter rolls around, previously hospitable conditions can <a href="https://theconversation.com/is-winter-miserable-for-wildlife-108734">quickly turn chilly and dangerous</a> for people and pups alike.</p> <p>Winter brings some unique challenges for dog owners, since dogs still need activity and socialization during colder seasons. Studies have shown that dog owners are almost 50% less likely to walk their dogs <a href="https://doi.org/10.3390/ani11113302">when the weather gets cold</a>. Knowing the basics of winter safety is critical to maintaining a healthy lifestyle for your dog.</p> <p>I am an <a href="https://www.vetmed.ucdavis.edu/faculty/erik-olstad">assistant professor</a> at the University of California Davis School of Veterinary Medicine who weathered polar vortexes with my dog while living in Michigan early in my career. While I’ve since moved to sunny California, I’ve seen how quickly frigid temperatures can turn dangerous for pets.</p> <h2>Breed and age differences</h2> <p>Not all dogs have the same abilities to deal with cold weather. A short-coated dog like a Chihuahua is much more susceptible to the dangers of cold weather than a thick-coated husky. When the weather dips below 40 degrees Fahrenheit (4 degrees Celsius), the well-acclimated husky may be comfortable, whereas the Chihuahua would shiver and be at risk of hypothermia.</p> <p>Additionally, if your dog is used to warm weather, but you decide to move to a colder region, the dog will need time to acclimate to that colder weather, even if they have a thick coat.</p> <p>Age also affects cold-weather resilience. Puppies and elderly dogs can’t withstand the chill as well as other dogs, but every dog is unique – each may have individual health conditions or physical attributes that make them more or less resilient to cold weather.</p> <h2>When is my dog too cold?</h2> <p>Pet owners should be able to recognize the symptoms of a dog that is getting too cold. Dogs will shiver, and some may vocalize or whine. Dogs may resist putting their feet down on the cold ground, or burrow, or try to find warmth in their environment when they are uncomfortable.</p> <p>Just like people, <a href="https://vcahospitals.com/know-your-pet/frostbite-in-dogs">dogs can get frostbite</a>. And just like people, the signs can take days to appear, making it hard to assess them in the moment. The most common sites for frostbite in dogs are their ears and the tips of their tails. Some of the initial signs of frostbite are skin discoloring, turning paler than normal, or purple, gray or even black; red, blistered skin; swelling; pain at the site; <a href="https://www.britannica.com/science/ulcer">or ulceration</a>.</p> <p>Other <a href="https://vcahospitals.com/know-your-pet/frostbite-in-dogs">serious signs of hypothermia</a> include sluggishness or lethargy, and if you observe them, please visit your veterinarian immediately. A good rule to live by is if it is too cold for you, it is too cold for your dog.</p> <p>Getting your dog a <a href="https://www.cnn.com/cnn-underscored/pets/best-winter-dog-coats-jackets">sweater or jacket</a> and <a href="https://www.akc.org/expert-advice/vets-corner/protect-dogs-paws-snow-ice-salt/">paw covers</a> can provide them with protection from the elements and keep them comfortable. Veterinarians also recommend closely monitoring your dog and limiting their time outside when the temperature nears the freezing point or drops below it.</p> <h2>Road salt dangers</h2> <p>Road salt that treats ice on streets and sidewalks <a href="https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/kitchener-waterloo/ice-salt-toxic-for-pets-1.5020088">can also harm dogs</a>. When dogs walk on the salt, the sharp, rough edges of the salt crystals can irritate the sensitive skin on their paws.</p> <p>Dogs will often lick their feet when they’re dirty, wet or irritated, and if they ingest any salt doing that, they may face GI upset, dehydration, kidney failure, seizures or even death. Even small amounts of pure salt can <a href="https://www.petpoisonhelpline.com/pet-tips/my-dog-ate-road-salt-will-they-be-okay/">disrupt critical body functions</a> in dogs.</p> <p>Some companies make pet-safe salt, but in public it can be hard to tell what type of salt is on the ground. After walking your dog, wash off their feet or boots. You can also keep their paw fur trimmed to prevent snow from balling up or salt collecting in the fur. Applying a thin layer of petroleum jelly or <a href="https://www.akc.org/expert-advice/lifestyle/how-to-make-your-own-paw-balm-for-winter/">paw pad balm</a> to the skin of the paw pads can also help protect your pet’s paws from irritation.</p> <h2>Antifreeze risks</h2> <p><a href="https://www.britannica.com/science/antifreeze-chemical-substance">Antifreeze, or ethylene glycol</a>, is in most vehicles to prevent the fluids from freezing when it gets cold out. Some people pour antifreeze into their toilets when away from their home to prevent the water in the toilet from freezing.</p> <p>Antifreeze is an exceptionally dangerous chemical to dogs and cats, as it tastes sweet but can be deadly when ingested. If a pet ingests even a small amount of antifreeze, the substance causes a chemical cascade in their body that results in severe kidney damage. If left untreated, the pet may have <a href="https://www.petpoisonhelpline.com/pet-owner-blog/antifreeze-poisoning/">permanent kidney damage or die</a>.</p> <p>There are safer antifreeze options on the market that use ingredients other than ethylene glycol. If your dog ingests antifreeze, please see your veterinarian immediately for treatment.</p> <p>When temperatures dip below freezing, the best thing pet owners can do is keep the time spent outside as minimal as possible. Try some <a href="https://www.akc.org/expert-advice/lifestyle/great-indoor-games-to-play-with-your-dog/">indoor activities</a>, like hide-and-seek with low-calorie treats, fetch or even an interactive obstacle course. Too big, too heavy and too slow to change: road transport is way off track for net zero

<p><a href="https://theconversation.com/profiles/robin-smit-594126">Robin Smit</a>, <em><a href="https://theconversation.com/institutions/university-of-technology-sydney-936">University of Technology Sydney</a></em></p> <p>The need to cut the emissions driving climate change is urgent, but it’s proving hard to decarbonise road transport in Australia. Its share of the nation’s total greenhouse gas emissions <a href="https://ageis.climatechange.gov.au/">doubled</a> from 8% in 1990 to 16% in 2020. New vehicles sold in Australia have <a href="https://theconversation.com/we-thought-australian-cars-were-using-less-fuel-new-research-shows-we-were-wrong-122378">barely improved</a> average emissions performance for the last decade or so.</p> <p>The federal government <a href="https://www.dcceew.gov.au/climate-change/publications/australias-emissions-projections-2022">publishes</a> emission forecasts to 2035 – 15 years short of 2050, the net-zero target date. Our <a href="https://www.transport-e-research.com/_files/ugd/d0bd25_7a6920bdd9e8448385863a7c23ec9ecf.pdf">newly published study</a> forecasts road transport emissions through to 2050. The estimated reduction by 2050, 35–45% of pre-COVID levels in 2019, falls well short of what’s needed.</p> <p>Our findings highlight three obstacles to achieving net zero. These are: Australia’s delay in switching to electric vehicles; growing sales of large, heavy vehicles such as SUVs and utes; and uncertainties about hydrogen as a fuel, especially for freight transport. These findings point to policy actions that could get road transport much closer to net zero.</p> <h2>How was this worked out?</h2> <p>Emissions and energy use vary from vehicle to vehicle, so reliable forecasting requires a detailed breakdown of the on-road fleet. Our study <a href="https://www.transport-e-research.com/software">used</a> the Australian Fleet Model and the net zero vehicle emission model (n0vem).</p> <p>The study focused on so-called <a href="https://www.cummins.com/news/2022/05/26/well-wheel-emissions-simplified">well-to-wheel emissions</a> from fuel production, distribution and use while driving. These activities account for about 75–85% of vehicle emissions. (<a href="https://theconversation.com/how-climate-friendly-is-an-electric-car-it-all-comes-down-to-where-you-live-179003">Life-cycle assessment</a> estimates “cradle-to-grave” emissions, including vehicle manufacture and disposal.)</p> <p>Working with European Union colleagues, our emissions simulation drew on an updated <a href="https://www.transport-e-research.com/_files/ugd/d0bd25_7a6920bdd9e8448385863a7c23ec9ecf.pdf">EU scenario</a> (EU-27) showing the changes in the EU vehicle fleet needed to meet the latest (proposed) CO₂ targets. Our study assumed Australia will be ten years behind the EU across all vehicle classes.</p> <p>We further modified the scenario to properly reflect Australian conditions. For instance, the EU has a much higher proportion of plug-in hybrid vehicles than Australia, where buyers are now bypassing them for wholly electric vehicles.</p> <h2>Energy use is shifting, but too slowly</h2> <p>Using this modified scenario, the simulation produces a forecast fall in total wheel-to-wheel emissions from Australian transport from 104 billion tonnes (Mt) in 2018 to 55-65Mt in 2050. Within the range of this 35–45% reduction, the outcome depends largely on the balance of renewable and fossil-fuel energy used to produce hydrogen.</p> <p>The modelling nonetheless predicts a large shift in energy use in road transport in 2050, as 2019 was basically 100% fossil fuels.</p> <p>The on-road energy efficiency of battery electric vehicles is roughly twice that of fuel cell electric (hydrogen) vehicles and roughly three times that of fossil-fuelled vehicles of similar type.</p> <p>The modelling results make this clear. In 2050, battery electric vehicles account for about 70% of total travel, but 25% of on-road energy use and only about 10% of total emissions.</p> <p>In contrast, fossil-fuelled vehicles account for about 25% of total travel in 2050, 60% of energy use and 75-85% of emissions. That’s even allowing for expected efficiency improvements.</p> <p>This means the shift to a mostly electric fleet by 2050 plus the use of hydrogen is predicted to fall short of what’s needed to get to net zero. It will require aggressive new policies to increase the uptake of electric vehicles across all classes.</p> <h2>Lighter vehicles make a big difference</h2> <p>But that is not the whole story. One neglected issue is the growing proportion of <a href="https://theconversation.com/we-may-be-underestimating-just-how-bad-carbon-belching-suvs-are-for-the-climate-and-for-our-health-190743">big, heavy passenger vehicles</a> (SUVs, utes). This trend is very noticeable in Australia. The laws of physics mean heavier vehicles need much more energy and fuel per kilometre of driving, and so produce more emissions.</p> <p>Currently, a large diesel SUV typically emits a kilogram of CO₂ for every 3 kilometres of driving, compared to 15km for a light electric vehicle and 200 kilometres for an e-bike. An average electric vehicle currently emits 1kg of CO₂ every 7km.</p> <p>This distance is expected to be around 60km in 2050, when renewables power the electricity grid. A lightweight electric car will more than double the distance to 125km per kilogram of CO₂. Reducing vehicle weights and optimising energy efficiency in transport will be essential to meet emission targets.</p> <p>The study modelled the impacts of <a href="https://www.automotiveworld.com/special-reports/vehicle-lightweighting-2/">lightweighting</a> passenger vehicles while keeping buses and commercial vehicles the same. If Australians had driven only small cars in 2019 for personal use, total road transport emissions would have been about 15% lower.</p> <p>The reduction in emissions from simply shifting to smaller cars is <a href="https://www.dcceew.gov.au/climate-change/publications/national-greenhouse-accounts-2019/national-inventory-report-2019">similar to</a> emissions from domestic aviation and domestic shipping combined. Importantly, lightweighting cuts emissions for all kinds of vehicles.</p> <h2>The uncertainties about hydrogen</h2> <p>Fuel cell electric vehicles using hydrogen account for only a few percent of all travel, but most will likely be large trucks. As a result, in our scenarios, they use a little over 10% of total on-road energy and produce 5-20% of total emissions, depending on the energy source used for hydrogen production and distribution.</p> <p>The modified EU scenario includes a significant uptake of hydrogen vehicles by 2050. That’s by no means guaranteed.</p> <p>The uptake in Australia has been negligible to date. That’s due to costs (vehicle and fuel), the need for new hydrogen fuel infrastructure, less mature technology (compared to battery electric vehicles) and limited vehicle availability. <a href="https://theconversation.com/we-must-rapidly-decarbonise-transport-but-hydrogens-not-the-answer-166830">Unresolved aspects</a> of hydrogen in transport include lower energy efficiency, the <a href="https://theconversation.com/for-australia-to-lead-the-way-on-green-hydrogen-first-we-must-find-enough-water-196144">need for clean water</a>, uncertainty about leakage, fuel-cell durability and value for consumers.</p> <h2>How do we get back on track?</h2> <p>Our study suggests Australia is on track to miss the net-zero target for 2050 mainly because of the large proportions of fossil-fuelled vehicles and large and heavy passenger vehicles.</p> <p>These two aspects could become targets for new policies such as public information campaigns, tax incentives for small, light vehicles, bans on selling fossil fuel vehicles and programs to scrap them. Other options to cut emissions include measures to reduce travel demand, optimise freight logistics and shift travel to public transport, to name a few.</p> <p>The study confirms the scale of the challenge of decarbonising road transport. "Who picks a fight with a rock star?" Jimmy Barnes confronts on-road "bully"

<p>Jimmy Barnes' wife Jane has ripped into a truck driver who "bullied" the couple on the road, with the driver attempting to "fight Jimmy on the roadside". </p> <p>Jane Barnes said the incident occurred on Wednesday night in the south Sydney suburb of Botany Bay, when the couple had been driving home from a charity event. </p> <p>In a furious thread on Twitter, Jane detailed the terrifying incident which resulted in the police being called. </p> <p>Jane wrote, "(He) cut us off across our lane and swiped our mirror, wanted to fight Jimmy on the roadside."</p> <p>"Trucks are like weapons, bullies behind the wheel a danger to us all," she wrote, alongside the hashtags #TOLL and #NOtobullies.  </p> <p>Jane then shared a photo of the truck drivers' side profile as he almost came to blows with the rockstar, as well as photos of the truck's license plate and the Barnes' car which shows the drivers' side wing mirror bent out of place. </p> <p>Jane went on to say the truckie had shared his details with the couple and that NSW Police had been called over the altercation. </p> <p>However, she said, officers "couldn't do much" if there were no injuries or damages.</p> <p>Jane's post drew in a wave of attention, with one fan asking, "Who picks a fight with a rock star?"</p> <p>Ms Barnes replied, "Shouldn't matter who it is. This guy was just a pig. Swearing, smug, ignorant, misogynist bully."</p> <p>The musician continued her rant on Instagram, writing, "When you drive a truck you're in charge of a weapon. Beloved US musician and his wife found dead on desert road

<p>A beloved US musician and his wife have been found dead near California under mysterious circumstances. </p> <p>Larry Petree and his wife Betty, who had been married for more than 60 years, were found dead on a desert road in a bizarre tragedy, leaving family members wondering what happened.</p> <p>“When deputies arrived, they found the bodies of an adult male sitting in the driver’s seat and adult female leaning against the rear tire,” the Kern County Sheriff’s Office said.</p> <p>Criminal activity is not suspected in the case, so homicide detectives didn‘t respond to the scene, while investigators added that it appeared the couple had run out of petrol. </p> <p>It is unclear where the couple were heading, and an official cause of death has yet to be revealed. </p> <p>Larry was known for his musical talents and played the pedal steel guitar, contributing to the iconic Bakersfield Sound era.</p> <p>He was playing shows in the area up until his passing, with Larry‘s final show being with a band called The Soda Crackers.</p> <p>“We had the honour of having Larry as our steel guitarist at our first ever show in Bakersfield and had the even greater honour of playing with him for his last show a few weeks ago,” the band wrote in a Facebook post on Monday.</p> <p>“We send our condolences to the Petree family and the greater Bakersfield Sound community.”</p> <p>Larry’s cousin, Laurie Sanders, told The Californian that Larry had been disoriented recently and got lost when attending his own gig. </p> <p>He failed to show up for the performance, and a family friend had to pick him up and take him to the concert. </p> <p><em>Image credits: Facebook</em></p>

"Very lucky": Queen in near-miss road incident

<p dir="ltr">Queen Elizabeth II has had a near-miss, after the car she was in was forced to swerve to avoid being hit by another vehicle coming towards them at speed.</p> <p dir="ltr">The Queen was sitting in the front passenger seat of her Range Rover as it left Wood Farm - where she is staying on the Sandringham estate - and pulled out onto a quiet country road, per <em><a href="https://honey.nine.com.au/royals/queen-elizabeth-car-forced-to-swerve-during-birthday-drive-near-sandringham/24e31303-c8e2-40d4-8f99-a4f998c9ec89" target="_blank" rel="noopener">9Honey</a></em>.</p> <p dir="ltr">A white Nissan Juke was driving towards them at speed - with onlookers saying it was travelling at around 50 km/h - forcing the Range Rover to swerve onto the grass to avoid a collision.</p> <p dir="ltr">The Nissan came to a stop before driving on again.</p> <p dir="ltr">Though no-one was injured, a witness told <em><a href="https://www.telegraph.co.uk/royal-family/2022/04/21/queens-car-forced-swerve-birthday-trip-drive/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Telegraph</a></em> UK the road was a common spot for speedsters.</p> <p dir="ltr">“We sometimes get cars going much faster along that road so the Queen was very lucky,” the witness said.</p> <p dir="ltr">The near-miss occurred at around 10.30am on Thursday, April 21, the same day she turned 96.</p> <p dir="ltr">Her birthday was celebrated with family and friends at Wood Farm, the cottage which was much loved by her late husband Prince Philip.</p> <p dir="ltr">The Queen’s family also took to social media to share sweet messages celebrating her milestone, accompanied by plenty of photos.</p> <p dir="ltr">“Happy 96th Birthday Granny!” Princess Eugenie wrote on Instagram.</p> <blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; "Poise under pressure": Woman snaps selfie as car sinks in ice

<p><em>Image: Twitter<br /></em></p> <p>A woman In Canada has been criticised for appearing to take a selfie from the roof of her submerged car as it sunk in a frozen lake.</p> <p>The woman’s car became submerged after breaking through ice on the Rideau River in Ottawa on Sunday afternoon, requiring her to be rescued. Fully."</p> <p>Video shot by resident Sacha Gera appears to show the woman driving on the ice at speed ahead of the rescue. It was reported that nobody was injured.</p> <p>Police said it served as an example that people should not drive across ice even when it looks safe.</p> <p>It seems the woman spent her time waiting to be rescued snapping a selfie while on the roof of her car. “She captured the moment with a selfie while people hurried and worried to help her,” Lynda Douglas tweeted, along with a photo.</p> <p>“Any time you are in a dangerous situation, you should not be taking selfies or doing anything distracting. You should be 100 per cent focused on being safe,” another man tweeted.</p> <p>However, others were far less critical. “She's waiting to be rescued. What the hell else is she supposed to do?” one man tweeted.</p> <p>“I appreciate her poise under pressure.”</p> <p>Regardless, the drive on the ice has proven costly for the woman, with her car being written off. Police have also charged her with an offence.</p>

Instead of putting more massive trucks on our roads, we need to invest in our rail network

<p>In recent years, the <a href="https://transport.vic.gov.au/ports-and-freight/freight-victoria">Victoria</a> and <a href="https://www.transport.nsw.gov.au/projects/strategy/nsw-freight-and-ports-plan">New South Wales</a> governments have both unveiled strategies to move more freight across the country by rail and ease the increasing pressure of goods moving through the two largest container ports.</p> <p>The reality is, however, the numbers of containers coming and going by rail to the Port of Melbourne and Sydney’s Port Botany have been going backwards.</p> <h2>More massive trucks on Victoria’s highways</h2> <p>The Port of Melbourne moves more containers than any other port in Australia. In 2020-21, <a href="https://www.portofmelbourne.com/about-us/trade-statistics/quarterly-trade-reports/">3.3 million</a> containers passed through the port, a <a href="https://www.portofmelbourne.com/about-us/trade-statistics/historical-trade-data/">30% increase from ten years ago</a>.</p> <p>Over this time, the percentage of containers moving by rail has fallen, reaching a <a href="https://www.accc.gov.au/system/files/Container%20stevedoring%20monitoring%20report%202020-21.pdf">low of 6.1% in 2020-21</a>. This has meant the number of trucks going to and from the Port of Melbourne has significantly increased.</p> <p>This has been assisted by improvements to the state’s roads and bridges. But the Victoria government also in mid-2021 <a href="https://transport.vic.gov.au/about/transport-news/news-archive/guiding-road-freight">approved</a> large “A Double” trucks being able to access the Port of Melbourne. These trucks can carry two 12-metre containers and be up to 36 metres long – much longer than the standard semitrailer at 19 metres.</p> <p>Large numbers of trucks accessing the ports not only add to road construction and maintenance bills, they also make our roads less safe and more congested, and add to noise and air pollution.</p> <p>The <a href="https://www.parliament.vic.gov.au/994-epc-lc/inquiry-into-air-pollution">recently released report</a> into the health effects of air pollution in Victoria notes the city of Maribyrnong has some of Australia’s highest levels of diesel pollution. This is mostly due to the number of trucks accessing the Port of Melbourne each day.</p> <p>The report also notes the transport sector is accountable for <a href="https://www.parliament.vic.gov.au/images/stories/committees/SCEP/Air_Pollution/Report/LCEPC_59-04_Health_impacts_air_pollution_Vic_Report.pdf">20% of Victoria’s total greenhouse gas emissions</a>.</p> <p>In 2018, Victoria introduced a new <a href="https://transport.vic.gov.au/getting-around/roads/heavy-vehicles">freight plan</a> that included initiatives to move more goods from the port by rail. One of these projects was the Port Rail Shuttle Network, a $28 million investment to connect the freight terminal in South Dandenong to the rail network. This is now underway.</p> <p>Increasing the amount of freight moving by rail will not only make our roads safer and reduce maintenance costs, it makes environmental sense – <a href="https://www.railfutures.org.au/2017/07/submission-to-inquiry-into-national-freight-and-supply-chain-priorities">rail freight produces one-third the emissions of road freight</a>.</p> <p>However, rail freight in Victoria is crippled by two different track gauges and tracks with too many temporary and permanent speed restrictions. Without greater investment to improve the rail system, it remains a less feasible option than moving freight on massive trucks on our roads.</p> <p><img src="https://images.theconversation.com/files/437972/original/file-20211216-19-ljbvpc.jpg?ixlib=rb-1.1.0&amp;q=45&amp;auto=format&amp;w=754&amp;fit=clip" alt="" /> <span class="caption">A freight train passing through a level crossing in Cootamundra, NSW.</span> <span class="attribution"><span class="source">Shutterstock</span></span></p> <h2>Sydney’s situation is not much better</h2> <p>A recent NSW <a href="https://www.audit.nsw.gov.au/our-work/reports/rail-freight-and-greater-sydney">auditor-general report</a> said the volume of freight passing through Greater Sydney is expected to increase by 48% by 2036.</p> <p>In 2020-21, <a href="https://www.nswports.com.au/nsw-ports-ceo-update-july-2021">2.7 million containers</a> moved through Port Botany. The NSW government had planned to increase the number of containers moving by rail from the port to <a href="https://www.nswports.com.au/resources-filtered/trade-reports">28% by 2021</a>. However, the auditor-general report said this effort would fall short. Just 16% is currently carried by rail.</p> <p>This means more trucks on the roads in NSW, as well. The NSW government has also recently <a href="https://www.smh.com.au/national/nsw/congestion-compounded-as-more-trucks-added-to-sydney-roads-20201101-p56aix.html">given permission</a> for “A Double” trucks to access Port Botany.</p> <p>The auditor-general report made recommendations on how NSW Transport could improve the operation of the state’s rail network to allow for more rail freight. It noted, for example, 54 trucks could be replaced by one 600-metre-long port shuttle freight train.</p> <h2>Rail moving less intercity freight</h2> <p>The rail network between Australia’s two largest cities is outdated and under-utilised. In fact, the proportion of freight moving between Melbourne and Sydney on rail has <a href="https://pacificnational.com.au/australias-major-highway-now-a-conveyor-belt-for-big-trucks/">fallen to about 1% today</a>. In 1970, it was <a href="https://www.bitre.gov.au/publications/2000/is_017">about 40%</a>.</p> <p>This is, in part, due to the total <a href="https://roads-waterways.transport.nsw.gov.au/about/environment/protecting-heritage/hume-highway-duplication/index.html">reconstruction</a> of the Hume Highway from a basic two-lane road to a modern dual carriageway, completed in 2013. There are now over <a href="https://roads-waterways.transport.nsw.gov.au/about/corporate-publications/statistics/traffic-volumes/aadt-map/index.html#/?z=6&amp;id=GNDSTC&amp;hv=1">20 million tonnes of freight</a> moved each year on the Hume Highway, with over 3,800 trucks on the road each day (and night at Gundagai).</p> <p>The result is more road trauma, higher maintenance bills and pressure for further road upgrades. Plus more emissions.</p> <p>The Sydney-Melbourne rail track, meanwhile, has been left with severe speed weight restrictions and a “steam age” alignment characterised by tight curves. It is also over 60 kms longer than it needs to be.</p> <h2>From a national perspective</h2> <p>Getting more freight on rail is not helped by hidden government subsidies to heavy truck operations, which in my estimations exceed <a href="https://theconversation.com/distance-based-road-charges-will-improve-traffic-and-if-done-right-wont-slow-australias-switch-to-electric-cars-150290">$2 billion per year</a>.</p> <p>It is also made harder by the current <a href="https://www.freightaustralia.gov.au/">National Freight and Supply Chain strategy</a>, which puts much more emphasis on increasing truck productivity with ever larger trucks.</p> <p>Instead, much more attention is needed to improving the efficiency and competitiveness of rail freight.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. How to make roads with recycled waste, and pave the way to a circular economy

<p>It cost <a href="https://www.buildingfortomorrow.wa.gov.au/projects/russell-road-to-roe-highway/">A$49 million</a> to add 12.5 kilometres of extra lanes to Western Australia’s Kwinana Highway, south of Perth’s CBD. That’s not unusual. On average, building a single lane of road costs about about <a href="https://www.bitre.gov.au/sites/default/files/rr148.pdf">A$5 million per kilometre</a>.</p> <p>What is unusual about this stretch of extra freeway is not the money but the materials beneath the bitumen: two stabilising layers comprised of <a href="https://www.wasteauthority.wa.gov.au/images/resources/files/2021/06/RtR_Pilot_Report.pdf.pdf">25,000 tonnes of crushed recycled concrete</a>, about 90% of which came from the demolition of Subiaco Oval (once Perth’s premier football ground).</p> <p><iframe width="440" height="260" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/jiFwKw3NTkk?wmode=transparent&amp;start=75" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe></p> <p>Recycling building and construction materials remains the exception to the rule in Australia. The<a href="https://www.awe.gov.au/sites/default/files/documents/national-waste-policy-action-plan-2019.pdf"> National Waste Policy</a> agreed to by federal, state and territory governments has a target of 80% resource recovery by 2030. It’s currently <a href="https://www.awe.gov.au/sites/default/files/documents/sustainable-procurement-guide.pdf">about 40%</a>.</p> <p>Of the 74 million tonnes of waste <a href="https://www.environment.gov.au/system/files/pages/5a160ae2-d3a9-480e-9344-4eac42ef9001/files/national-waste-report-2020.pdf">generated in Australia in 2020</a>, masonry materials comprised about 22.9 million tonnes. Plastics, by comparison, comprised about 2.5 million tonnes. Of the 61.5 million tonnes of “core waste” managed by the waste and resource recovery sector, 44% (27 million tonnes) came from the construction and demolition sector, compared with 20% (12.6 million tonnes) from households and local government activities.</p> <p>Most of this waste – concrete, brick, steel, timber, asphalt and plasterboard or cement sheeting – could be reused or recycled. It ends up in landfill due to simple economics. It’s cheaper to buy new materials and throw them away rather than reuse and recycle.</p> <p>Changing this equation and moving to a circular economy, in which materials are reused and recycled rather than discarded in landfill, is a key goal to reduce the impact of building and construction on the environment, including its contribution to climate change.</p> <h2>The economics of ‘externalities’</h2> <p>The fact it is more “economic” to throw materials away than reuse them is what economists call a market failure, driven by the problem of “externalities”. That is, the social and environmental costs of producing, consuming and throwing away materials is not reflected in the prices charged. Those costs are instead externalised – borne by others.</p> <p>In such cases there is a legitimate – and necessary – role for governments to intervene and correct the market failure. For an externality such as carbon emissions (imposing costs on future generations) the market-based solution favoured by most economists is a carbon price.</p> <p>For construction material waste, governments have a few more policy levers to help create a viable market for more recycling.</p> <h2>Using procurement policies</h2> <p>One way to make recycling more attractive to businesses would be to increase the cost of sending waste materials to landfill. But this would likely have unintended consequences, such as illegal dumping.</p> <p>The more obvious and effective approach is to help create more demand for recycled materials through government procurement, adopting policies that require suppliers to, for example, use a minimum amount of recycled materials.</p> <p>With enough demand, recyclers will invest in further waste recovery, reducing the costs. The federal <a href="https://www.environment.gov.au/system/files/resources/856a1de0-4856-4408-a863-6ad5f6942887/files/sustainable-procurement-guide.pdf">Sustainable Procurement Guide</a> states the Australian government “is committed to transforming Australia’s waste into a resource, where most goods and services can be continually used, reused, recycled and reprocessed as part of a circular economy”.</p> <p>But these policies lack some basic elements.</p> <h2>Three key market-making reforms</h2> <p>Our research suggests three important reforms could make a big difference to waste market operations. This is based on interviewing 27 stakeholders from the private sector and government about how to improve sustainable procurement.</p> <p>First, government waste policies that set aspirational goals are not supported by procurement policies setting mandatory minimum recycled content targets. All contractors on government-funded construction projects should be required to use a percentage of recycled waste materials.</p> <p>Second, the nature of salvaging construction materials means quality can vary significantly. Cement recycled from a demolition site, for example, could contain contaminants that reduce its durability.</p> <p>Governments can help the market through regularly auditing the quality of recycler’s processes, to increase buyer confidence and motivate suppliers to invest in production technologies.</p> <p>Third, in some states (such as Western Australia) the testing regimes for recycled construction products are more complex than that what applies to raw materials. 5 of the most dangerous roads in the world

<p><strong>Proceed with caution!</strong></p> <p><span>We came up with our list of the world’s most dangerous roads by consulting the experts who have driven some of these harrowing highways and by checking out other lists from the </span><em>World Most Dangerous Roads</em><span> travel documentary TV series. These 18 roads hug the edges of cliffs with no guard rail, are covered in ice, frequently flood, feature 18 lanes of manic traffic, and have sections of their infrastructure that are crumbling that would test even the best road trip cars. Attempting to tackle one of the most dangerous roads in the world is not for the faint of heart and not for the kind of driver who struggles to find reverse!</span></p> <p><strong>Col du Chaussy, France</strong></p> <p><span>At 1,532 metres above sea level, Col du Chaussy in the Rhône-Alpes region of south-eastern France is a high mountain pass that starts with the famous “Les Lacets de Montvernier.” This special stretch is only about 3.2km long but features 17 hairpin turns as you climb up an actual cliff. There’s a small concrete barrier as you zigzag upward but this improbable road, while impossibly picturesque, is still one of the most dangerous roads in the world.</span></p> <p><strong>Karnali Highway, Nepal</strong></p> <p><span>Approximately 50 people die here every year, making a drive on the 250km Karnali Highway in the Himalayas of West Nepal a literal death wish. It is one of the most dangerous roads in the world even when it’s not monsoon season because the surface is extremely dusty making visibility poor and includes narrow stretches, landslides, falling rocks, flooded sections, potholes, huge drops off steep cliffs, and significant bumpiness. And now it is only a road passable, at best, during the day as the police have banned driving at night due to the high number of fatal accidents.</span></p> <p><strong>Commonwealth Avenue, Philippines</strong></p> <p><span>Unlike other roads and highways on this list, this one isn’t perched on the edge of a mountain or near a crumbling bridge. In fact, it’s a wide urban highway that’s just 12km long. Eighteen lanes wide to be specific and due to heavy traffic, poor drainage which brings floods on the avenue, and the constant presence of motorbikes and pedestrians that tour buses can’t even see, this road has earned the tragic nickname “Killer Highway” because of the many accidents and fatalities suffered here.</span></p> <p><strong>BR-116 ("Rodovia da Morte"), Brazil</strong></p> <p><span>Any highway called Rodovia de Morte or Highway of Death is bound to be one of the most dangerous roads in the world. Stretching from Fortaleza in the north of the country to the southeast edge along the Uruguay border, this 4,490-km highway is the second-longest in Brazil and while it is advertised as being completely paved, that designation is dubious as much of BR-116 is in poor condition. But some cracked asphalt is not what makes it dangerous. Unstable weather and steep cliffs regularly cause major accidents and because the Highway of Death passes through some of Brazil’s most poverty-stricken areas, the threat of gangs lurk in several spots along this busy route.</span></p> <p><strong>Taroko Gorge Road, Taiwan</strong></p> <p><span>Taroko Gorge Road is one of the most dangerous roads in the world because it is carved out of a mountain and runs through one too. This popular 19km stretch in Taiwan is spectacular so you can expect a parade of tour buses, cars, scooters, bicyclists and pedestrians all sharing the same narrow road, and all trying to navigate blind corners and terrifying bends that look too small to fit around. If you find yourself on Taroko Gorge Road, you better hope the weather is fair, otherwise, you might suffer through landslides, floods and falling rocks that make sections impassable.</span></p> <p><em><span style="font-weight: 400;">Written by Tamara Hinson and Jeff Bogle. 10 tips for safe road trips

<p><strong>Check the brakes</strong></p> <p>To prevent accidents on the road, checking your brakes prior to departure should be at the top of your road trip checklist.</p> <p>Make sure they’re free of damage or rust, which will ensure they’re in optimal working order, and check the brake fluid as well.</p> <p>The latter ensures the pressure you put in when pressing down on the brake pedal actually makes it to the brakes. It’s basically the secret ingredient to ensure they do their job successfully.</p> <p><strong>Check the lights</strong></p> <p>When driving, you want to make sure that other drivers know when you’re switching lanes, pressing on the brakes or turning your hazard lights on.</p> <p>Doing a quick check at home is easy: simply test out all the lights with a friend to see which ones are and are not functional.</p> <p>Take note of any lights that may need to have their bulb replaced, and get them fixed before you go.</p> <p><strong>Check your battery</strong></p> <p>The battery is the power that keeps your car running.</p> <p>Before a lengthy drive, you need to make sure your battery is juiced-up.</p> <p>Particularly during the summer, the heat can increase the rate in which the battery corrodes.</p> <p>Batteries tend to have a lifespan of three to five years, so if your road trip falls somewhere within that timeframe, it’s best to get it changed before you and your family hit the road.</p> <p><strong>Check your tyre pressure</strong></p> <p>Warm weather can really do a number on your tyres.</p> <p>As the temperature rises, pressure increases, so you would have to let some air out of your tyres.</p> <p>It’s best to get your tyre pressure checked before you hit the road, as the more you drive, the more the pressure mounts.</p> <p>Always keep a tyre-pressure gauge with you in the car – they’re inexpensive to purchase.</p> <p>Also, make sure the pressure on your spare tyre is sufficient, too.</p> <p><strong>Check oil and other fluids</strong></p> <p>If your car is due to be serviced for an oil check, be sure to do so prior to leaving on your road trip, rather than waiting until you return.</p> <p>The oil, after all, ensures your engine runs smoothly, so the oil has to be checked whether it is both sufficient as well as clean.</p> <p>It’s pretty easy to do on your own – you can find various ‘how-to’ guides online – but for extra precaution, bring it in to your dealer or a trusted mechanic.</p> <p>While you’re there, have them check the transmission, radiator and brake fluids.</p> <p><strong>Fill up on engine coolant</strong></p> <p>As its name suggests, engine coolant keeps the engine from overheating.</p> <p>So if you’re looking to spend hours on the road under the sun, this is an indispensable tip.</p> <p>Some think that plain water could be a good (and less expensive) alternative to coolant but while water does transfer heat better than coolant, coolant actually boasts ingredients that will keep your engine, radiator and heater from corroding.</p> <p><strong>Check your air filter</strong></p> <p>A car’s air filter tends to need a cleaning every time you get your oil checked – or as often as is suggested in your owner’s manual.</p> <p>It’s imperative that the filter isn’t clogged or dirty.</p> <p>By keeping it clean, your car will continue to run smoothly, as it’s an integral part of your engine’s system, keeping gunk from infiltrating the fuel system.</p> <p><strong>Check windshield wipers and top up washer fluid</strong></p> <p>On average, windshield wiper blades need to be replaced once per year – this is particularly the case in cold climates where the blades tend to wear out fast.</p> <p>How do you know when they need to be replaced?</p> <p>f they leave streaks behind and actually hinder visibility more than they help with it, it is time for a replacement.</p> <p>Be sure to also fill up on windshield washer fluid before you hit the road – you don’t want to be caught with an empty tank after a particularly muddy detour!</p> <p><strong>Get a car wash</strong></p> <p>A newly-washed car boosts a driver’s morale, and gets him or her excited for the road ahead.</p> <p>On the safety front, a washed car just makes your journey all the more secure.</p> <p>After all, a clean window ensures visibility, and spotless tail lights make it easy for drivers behind you to know when you’re hitting the brakes.</p> <p><strong>Stock and emergency kit</strong></p> <p>When you’re on the road – whether for a short or a long trip – you never know what to expect. Musical roads around the world

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Scattered around the world are “musical roads”, as disparate as Iran, California, Denmark, and Japan. </span></p> <p><strong>How can roads be musical?</strong></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">These tuneful roads use the vibrations made by each wheel of the car as it bumps along the uneven road, with select grooves carved into the road surface to make a cohesive series of notes.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">By changing the distance between each strip, the pitch can be controlled. The closer the strips are, the higher the pitch of the vibrations, and the further apart they are, the lower the pitch is.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">This can also be achieved using raised bumps in the road.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">But this method is much more jarring to the vehicle occupants, and only the very first musical road in Gylling, Denmark, was created this way.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Ensuring the road stays in tune can be quite difficult though. Engineers must etch each groove so that it is sampled at a specific speed, just like how a record has to follow rpm limits.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Drivers need to hit the grooves head-on and should keep their windows closed to get the best effect, as most of the sound is transmitted through the car’s chassis rather than the air.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">While there are none currently in Australia (or New Zealand), there are dozens around the world with their own tune of choice. Here are top five musical roads from all over the globe.</span></p> <p><strong>The Musical Road - Lancaster, California, USA</strong></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Originally installed as part of an advertising campaign for the Honda Civic, and was the first musical road in the United States. The reward of getting to hear a small snippet of “America the Beautiful” has proven to be a popular way of ensuring drivers follow the 45 mph (72 km/h) speed limit, though it has become slightly out of tune.</span></p> <p><iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Uucy_blcSrg" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen=""></iframe></p> <p><strong>Melody Road - Anyang, Gyeonggi, South Korea</strong></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Just to the south of Seoul, a section of highway in Anyang plays the nursery rhyme “Mary Had a Little Lamb”. The musical elements were added to keep motorists alert, as 68 percent of traffic accidents in South Korea are caused by inattentive, sleeping or speeding drivers, while also entertaining commuters.</span></p> <p><iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/BFlkWV45oYE" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen=""></iframe></p> <p><strong>Whimsey hides the true motivation</strong></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">While musical roads might come across as a pure novelty, the requirement to “play” the tune at a specific speed can also serve as a stealth enforcement of speed limits.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In New Mexico, for instance, the melodic road is part of a strategy to reduce accidents on a stretch of Route 66 that has often been the source of accidents in the past. </span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In South Korea, the musical roads are intended to help motorists stay alert in areas where fatigue has caused a number of accidents.</span></p>

Elderly man fined over DIY zebra crossing for his disabled wife

<p><span>An elderly man is paying the price for painting a zebra crossing near his home after multiple requests to his local council went ignored.</span><br /><br /><span>Laurie Phillips, 78, was forced to take matters into his own hands when his local council ignored multiple requests to introduce a safer crossing on his busy street for his disabled wife.</span><br /><br /><span>Mr Phillips, from Dorset on England’s south coast, painted the crossing early one morning with two friends.</span></p> <p><img style="width: 500px; height: 281.25px;" src="https://oversixtydev.blob.core.windows.net/media/7839882/zebra-crossing-1.jpg" alt="" data-udi="umb://media/0c972e78a2844e86b5e4995be2d3dfae" /><br /><br /><span>However council workers were quick to report him to the police and his creation was quickly removed.</span><br /><br /><span>Mr Phillips argued his DIY crossing had made the area “dramatically safer”, but local authorities agreed and was slapped with a fine of AU$233 after being interviewed by police.</span><br /><br /><span>He said he warned the council he would install the crossing for his 76-year-old wife Estelle, who uses a mobility scooter, if they failed to do so.</span></p> <p><img style="width: 500px; height: 281.25px;" src="https://oversixtydev.blob.core.windows.net/media/7839881/zebra-crossing-2.jpg" alt="" data-udi="umb://media/dca54c26bbae4917a2fe1dbfa9d0475c" /><br /><br /><span>He went on to argue that he was never told not to install a crossing and believes the debacle is a waste of police resources a</span><br /><br /><span>Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council have since said they will “carefully assess” if a crossing was needed at the location.</span></p> <p><em><span>Images: Bournemouth News/Australscope</span></em></p>

Are you planning a road trip?

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Every now and then we all get itchy feet and feel the need to escape the daily grind, but perhaps don’t want the expense and or hassle of organising a major holiday to a far off destination. Why not just keep it simple and do a good old fashioned road trip? It can be a satisfying and stimulating adventure with lots of variety and experiences along the way and with a little bit of smart planning it can be a simple and economical way to take some time out.</span></p> <p><strong>Good planning is essential</strong></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The difference between a fun-filled, stress-free trip and a frustrating, tiring one is all in the planning. Driving a long distance without a good plan is a recipe for a disastrous holiday. Get together with your partner or whoever you are travelling with and get some concrete ideas of:</span></p> <ul> <li style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">The general area and destinations you want to include</span></li> <li style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">How far you want to travel each day</span></li> <li style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">What attractions and experiences you want to sample along the way </span></li> <li style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Key places where you may want to stop over a bit longer </span></li> <li style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Where you will stay</span></li> </ul> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Internet is a great place to research potential routes and to work out itineraries and there are some fabulous sites that can give you inspiration and let you plan for the factors listed above. The Drive Australia site is a great example. It provides a host of suggested route maps Australia-wide and it even breaks each route down to daily chunks, accommodation options and things to see and do along the way, so you can plan your adventure as much as possible in advance. It even has a handy ‘inspirations’ tool that lets you filter possible journeys that suit the profile of the people travelling, the length of time you have available and the types of attractions you are interested in.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The key to good trip planning is to focus on quality, not quantity. It’s not how far you drive or how quickly you can get to your destination that matters; it’s the variety and quality of experiences along the way. The major highways will often bypass some interesting country towns or some scenic wonders, so don’t let the road determine your itinerary; read and research the things that will fill your journey with richer encounters.</span></p> <p><strong>Organise your accommodation</strong></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The last thing you want to be doing at the end of each day of the trip is to be hunting around for somewhere to stay the night. Take the stress out by booking your accommodation ahead. If you have a planned itinerary then you know what towns you will be in each night and it’s easy to research the options online.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The type of accommodation depends on your preferences. You may want to keep as close to nature as possible and opt for camping grounds or caravan parks. If you are more concerned about getting a good night’s rest, then maybe it is better to book hotels, motels or bed &amp; breakfast style accommodation.</span></p> <p><strong>Worry-free driving</strong></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Make sure you don’t neglect the central hub of your roadtrip – your vehicle. It’s your transport and your ‘daytime accommodation’ so it needs to be in tip top shape for the journey. Safety and reliability are critical to a worry-free trip, so have your vehicle serviced before you leave to make sure things like battery, oil, tyres and belts are all in good order.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Then there are the little things that can make your time on the road more comfortable, such as windshield cleaner fluid, wipers and even just a good clean inside and out. Pack some emergency gear too, (just in case), including jumper leads, torch, a basic first aid kit.....and a spare set of car keys.</span></p> <p><strong>Feeding the mind and body in transit</strong></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">When it comes to food, variety is the key word. It’s nice to stop at the occasional café, restaurant or pub along the way, but you may end up eating too heavily if that makes up your whole diet, not to mention the extra cost involved. Mix up your meal options by taking a cooler bag with you and stock it up with some fruit, healthy snacks (such as trail mix), juice, bread and sandwich fillings. This gives you the flexibility to stop by a river, beach or scenic spot for lunch, rather than driving around searching for take-aways. A thermos can be refilled each morning at your accommodation and instant coffee and teabags will complete the picture.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">To keep the mind stimulated on the longer stretches of road make sure you pack your favourite music and even some audio books for a change of pace. Keep comfortable too by packing some moist towlettes, some bags for rubbish and maybe a pillow and blanket will be handy if you ever need to pull over at a quiet grassy spot to catch a quick refreshing nap.</span></p> <p><strong>A final tip</strong></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Some of the best experiences on the road will be the people you meet and not just the places you visit. Don’t be afraid to ask the locals for tips on the best places to dine and the more offbeat attractions to visit. You can make your own healthier chocolate or simply use a good quality store bought dark chocolate with a cocoa content of around 85 per cent. </span></li> <li style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">In a dry fry-pan over medium heat, add your nuts and toast them, tossing frequently so they do not burn. Once they become aromatic and lightly golden brown, after about 3 to 4 minutes, remove from the heat and set aside to cool slightly. </span></li> <li style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">In a bowl, add your Macro Certified Organic Frozen Raspberries, Blueberries and Mixed Berries and toss gently to combine. </span></li> <li style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Line a small brownie pan or square cake tin with baking paper. Pour in half of the melted chocolate, cover well with the mixed nuts and macro organic berries, and then pour the remaining raining half of chocolate over the top, making sure you get even coverage and cover the nuts and berries as best as you can.</span></li> <li style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Transfer to your freezer and allow it to set completely for about 30 to 45 minutes before slicing with a warm knife and serving in generous chunks. “They kept walking”: 78-year-old man breaks hip and is left on the road without help

<p>A 78-year-old man was left on the road for an hour and a half without help after falling off his bike, his daughter said.</p> <p>Karingal resident Allan Mayo-Smith was cycling near Skye Road in Frankston, Melbourne when his front wheel slipped on sand, landing him on concrete and breaking his hip.</p> <p>His daughter Kathryn Smith said he called on several people who saw him, but they did not go to his aid.</p> <p>“He saw some people walk past and he was waving at them,” she told the <a rel="noopener" href="https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-09-06/elderly-melbourne-cyclist-ignored-after-falling-daughter-says/11481550" target="_blank"><em>ABC</em></a>.</p> <p>“He was screaming ‘help me’, and they just looked at him and kept walking.”</p> <p>Smith said her father was “left to lie on wet grass” before a father and a son stopped to call an ambulance and take his bicycle for safekeeping.</p> <p>“I was really disappointed in those people who just looked and then kept going,” she said.</p> <p>“It’s not hard to check on someone.</p> <p>“You can check on them a couple of metres away if you’re afraid it’s a set-up or a drug person. But he was in cycle gear, he was an old dude, you know.”</p> <p>Since the fall earlier this week, Mayo-Smith has had hip replacement surgery.</p> <p>Smith recalled a similar experience that she had when motorists “were just driving past” as she struggled in a motorbike accident on the Monash Freeway three months ago.</p> <p>“People stopped, but only the ones that witnesses it. They didn’t get out and help, they saw me struggle to pick the bike up,” she said.</p> <p>“I think everyone’s just out for themselves these days.”</p>
