From Love Actually to Christmas On The Farm: how rom-coms became a festive season staple

<p>It is a visual language with which we are almost all familiar. It’s cold and snowing outside, but inside, next to a crackling fire, it’s warm and cosy. The tree is a deep green, festooned with fairy lights, glinting off the wrapping of the presents below. There is hot chocolate and sugar cookies and eggnog and candy canes, and the only things that can be heard are carols and the joyous laughter of our nearest and dearest.</p> <p>This image of Christmas is, of course, vastly different to what we usually experience in Australia – extreme heat, seafood platters, <a rel="noopener" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fCNvZqpa-7Q" target="_blank">white wine in the sun</a> – but it is still one with which we are very familiar. Countdown to Christmas has become increasingly extravagant: <a rel="noopener" href="https://www.tasteofhome.com/article/hallmark-christmas-movies-2021/" target="_blank">in 2021</a>, it began on October 22, and will feature a total of forty new movies, along with a (very) large number from previous years.</p> <p>While Hallmark Christmas movies have been a cultural touchstone for many years in North America, that hasn’t been the case to the same extent in Australia, because we haven’t had widespread access to the flood of programming.</p> <p><a href="https://images.theconversation.com/files/437059/original/file-20211212-23-16hf6i3.jpg?ixlib=rb-1.1.0&amp;q=45&amp;auto=format&amp;w=1000&amp;fit=clip"><img src="https://images.theconversation.com/files/437059/original/file-20211212-23-16hf6i3.jpg?ixlib=rb-1.1.0&amp;q=45&amp;auto=format&amp;w=754&amp;fit=clip" alt="" /></a> <em><span class="caption">In Write Before Christmas (2020), a Hallmark Channel original movie, recently single Jessica sends Christmas cards to five people that have impacted her life. As each person receives Jessica’s card, they are sparked to act in their own lives to make them better.</span> <span class="attribution"><span class="source">Hallmark</span></span></em></p> <p>However, the advent and popularity of Netflix’s Hallmark-style Christmas movies, beginning with A Christmas Prince and Christmas Inheritance in 2017, have led to a growing familiarity and engagement with the Christmas romance genre from local audiences.</p> <p>As a result, after many years with <a rel="noopener" href="https://theconversation.com/a-very-aussie-christmas-70647" target="_blank">a dearth of local Christmas programming</a>, Stan released A Sunburnt Christmas last year, their first Australian Christmas original film. This year, they have another original Australian Christmas offering in rom-com <a rel="noopener" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_oEqfyLpMQ" target="_blank">Christmas on the Farm</a>, which premiered on December 1.</p> <p><iframe width="440" height="260" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/r_oEqfyLpMQ?wmode=transparent&amp;start=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe></p> <p>Christmas on the Farm is missing a key ingredient of the Hallmark Christmas romance: snow (in the Hallmark universe, the characters <a rel="noopener" href="https://www.vox.com/culture/2017/12/14/16752012/hallmark-christmas-movies-explained" target="_blank">“can’t be waiting for the snow, there has to <em>be</em> snow”</a>). However, it boasts a screenwriter with Hallmark credentials in Jennifer Notas Shapiro, and draws on plenty of other tropes of the Christmas rom-com.</p> <p><strong>What makes a Christmas rom-com?</strong></p> <p>Hallmark has a reputation for conservatism, and we cannot fail to note that for many years, their movies featured exclusively <a rel="noopener" href="https://thewalrus.ca/the-unwatchable-whiteness-of-holiday-movies/" target="_blank">straight, white, middle-class characters</a> <a rel="noopener" href="https://www.vulture.com/2021/11/gac-family-christmas-movies-cable-tv.html?utm_campaign=nym&amp;utm_medium=s1&amp;utm_source=tw" target="_blank">falling in love</a> (although they are slowly beginning to diversity their casts).</p> <p>It is perhaps surprising, then, that Christmas rom-coms do not tend to be particularly religious. Instead, <a rel="noopener" href="https://theconversation.com/what-makes-christmas-movies-so-popular-127972" target="_blank">as S Brent Rodriguez-Plate argues</a>, there’s a more secular reason for the season underpinning these films – “the power of family, true love, the meaning of home or the reconciliation of relationships”.</p> <p>Christmas rom-coms thus have a particular aesthetic (snow, mistletoe, ugly-but-snuggly jumpers), and a particular set of core values: family, community, selflessness, kindness, love. One of our protagonists – usually the heroine – returns home for the holidays. This is often against her will: she’s usually a city-dwelling career woman, leaving behind a similarly career-driven boyfriend.</p> <p>But going home for Christmas reveals to her that although she might be successful, she hasn’t been happy. However, she nearly always finds herself using her corporate skills to re-energise and revive these businesses. For films which make it clear that we should not dream of labour, a surprising amount of attention is paid to stimulating the economy of small towns.</p> <p><strong>Christmas kingdoms</strong></p> <p>If our heroine is not going home for the holidays, she might find herself in a small, ambiguously European and unambiguously Christmassy kingdom. Any cynicism towards the season is swiftly quashed. It is only by embracing the genre’s key values that the happy ending of the rom-com can be reached. Our protagonists must fall in love not only with each other, but also with Christmas.</p> <p><strong>A happy ending</strong></p> <p>Christmas rom-coms always end happily, with our central couple in love and everyone having a very merry Christmas. There is a familiar pattern to them - one does not watch these films to be surprised.</p> <p>Like many of the trappings of Christmas, watching these movies is a holiday ritual for many people, as comforting as putting on a Christmas jumper. The 6 best rom-coms of all time

<p>Rom-coms: they tug at our heartstrings, make us laugh and make us cry. Some of us may not admit it, but we’ve all seen our fair share of romantic comedies – good ones, bad ones and just plain cheesy ones. The genre was popular in early cinema, with Audrey Hepburn the undisputed rom-com queen of the time, but faded in the 1960s. It wasn’t until 1989, where our list starts, when romantic comedies came sprinting back onto the scene with our first film:</p> <p><strong>1. <em>When Harry Met Sally</em> (1989)</strong></p> <p>Can men and women ever just be friends? That’s what this iconic rom-com asked in 1989, with stars Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal playing the titular characters, who meet at university and continue to encounter one another throughout the next ten or so years. And who could forget that legendary line: “I’ll have what she’s having.”</p> <p><strong>2. <em>Four Weddings and a Funeral</em> (1994)</strong></p> <p>This is the film which catapulted Hugh Grant to fame. The film follows bumbling Englishman Charles and Carrie (Andie MacDowell), an American, who meet at – you guessed it – four weddings and a funeral. Charles is quickly smitten with Carrie, who is due to be married back in the US. This film is filled with tear-jerking moments but also some hilarious one-liners.</p> <p><strong>3. <em>Roman Holiday</em> (1953)</strong></p> <p><em>Breakfast at Tiffany’s</em> (1961) is probably Audrey Hepburn’s most well-known film, but her first starring role as a princess determined to see the sights of Rome on her own is one her best. Acting alongside the incredible Gregory Peck, Hepburn’s character falls for an American reporter and finds herself caught between her duties and her heart.</p> <p><strong>4. <em>Pretty Woman</em> (1990)</strong></p> <p>In the film that made her a star, Julia Roberts stars as Vivian Ward, a call girl who agrees to the escort of businessman Edward Lewis (Richard Gere). As they attend Edward’s business events and functions together, the two begin to develop feelings for one another.</p> <p><strong>5. <em>Bridget Jones’ Diary</em> (2001)</strong></p> <p>Before the latest instalment comes out in September, go back to the original (and the best yet) film in the <em>Bridget Jones</em> series. Follow the life and loves of hapless Bridget Jones (Renée Zellweger) in this hilarious, quintessentially British romantic comedy.</p> <p><strong>6. <em>Gentlemen Prefer Blondes</em> (1953)</strong></p> <p>We couldn’t get through a rom-com list without some Marilyn Monroe. Researchers classify relationships in four rom-com categories

<p>A new study promises to define your relationship for you once and for all, boxing you into one of four tidy categories reminiscent of the rom-com movies you know and love.</p> <p>This one's a step further than the multiple-choice magazine quiz – it's backed by science. Three relationship researchers worked with 400 couples over nine months, checking their levels of commitment over time.</p> <p>Using this fool-proof method, they found four categories your relationship could fit into - conflicted but passionate, partner-focused, social butterflies, and the dramatic.</p> <p><strong>1. Conflicted but passionate</strong></p> <p>They break up, they make up. Think <em>Notting Hill</em>, <em>The Notebook</em> and most of all, Ashton Kutcher and Brittany Murphy in <em>Just Married</em> - the one where they get hitched, drive into a snow drift, kill a dog and eventually their love conquers all.</p> <p>Perhaps you've set your Facebook relationship status to "it's complicated"?</p> <p>The study says these couples have ups and downs and their commitment levels wax and wane depending on their latest make up or break up. However, it's not all doom and gloom. Just like Ashton and Brittany, they're likely to stick together and conquer it all in the end.</p> <p>Study author Brian Ogolsky says, "These couples operate in a tension between conflict that pushes them apart and passionate attraction that pulls them back together".</p> <p><strong>2. The partner-focused</strong></p> <p>Fancy a night in on the couch with a bowl of pasta, re-runs of Suits and the dog? Just like Jack Black and Kate Winslet in <em>The Holiday</em> or Diane Keaton and Morgan Freeman in <em>5 Flights Up</em>, you spend a lot of time with your significant other and have a relationship based around shared interests and a life built together.</p> <p>You tend to be a bit more cautious, building the relationship from the inside out. The study says these couples are likely to go the distance and tend to be the most satisfied.</p> <p><strong>3. The social butterflies</strong></p> <p>You could be the real life version of Monica and Chandler - well, maybe without the purple apartment and the neurotic clean freak angle!</p> <p>The social butterflies are couples whose relationship is built on mutual friendships and a feeling of friendship felt for each other. They spend a lot of time together in their social groups, which builds their relationship with each other. These couples tend to be very stable and have good chances of long term happiness.</p> <p><strong>4. The dramatic</strong></p> <p>Well, you could basically be any big screen couple who breaks up and never gets back together. Dramatic couples sometimes struggle to see the positives, and break up because the struggle starts to erode the relationship. They are twice as likely to break up as the other couples.</p> <p>You're <em>500 Days of Summer</em> or <em>Forgetting Sarah Marshall</em>. The original ending of Pretty Woman was shockingly different

<p><em>Unfaithful</em> actress, Diane Lane, who auditioned for Julia Roberts’ loveable call girl part in <em>Pretty Woman</em>, has revealed how different the famous romantic comedy could have turned out.</p> <p>She told host James Cordon on <em>The Late Late Show</em> that when she was asked to audition for the role of Vivian Ward the movie was a psychotic thriller called 3000. It was a dark tale of a psychotic prostitute with no fairy tale ending.</p> <p>“It was called <em>3000</em> — her fee for the weekend,” Lane says, before revealing the shocking ending: “At the end of the film, she gets kicked out of a rolling limousine and into the street.”</p> <p>However, when the script changed hands and got to Disney director Gary Marshall, he did a number of rewrites.</p> <p>“My vision was a combination of fairy tales. Julia was Rapunzel, Richard was Prince Charming and Hector [Elizondo] was the fairy godmother. It didn’t seem like a vision everybody would have, but I did,” he told Vanity Fair.</p> <p>Interestingly, Al Pacino and Michelle Pfeiffer also were auditioned for the lead roles. </p> <p>“It would definitely have been a different movie if had it been Al Pacino and Michelle Pfeiffer,” Marhshall adds. “It might have been closer to the original script and maybe not have had a happy ending. But the chemistry between Julia and Richard, it is palpable on the screen, it was palpable in auditions. You can’t really see how it could end any other way, because they just light up with each other.”</p> <p>So it seems in the end it was the sizzling chemistry between Roberts and Gere that forced a change of the script to create one of the most loved rom-coms of all time.</p> <p>“The chemistry between Roberts and Gere was perfect.
