Popular TV host diagnosed with same condition as Bruce Willis

Popular American TV host Wendy Williams has shared her diagnosis after being plagued by "hurtful rumours".

The 59-year-old's medical team announced in a lengthy statement that she has been diagnosed with aphasia and frontotemporal dementia: the same conditions actor Bruce Willis is battling.

The news comes after Williams' family confirmed she had checked in to a facility to treat cognitive issues.

“Questions have been raised at times about Wendy’s ability to process information and many have speculated about Wendy’s condition, particularly when she began to lose words, act erratically at times, and have difficulty understanding financial transactions,” her medical team said.

They said Williams' symptoms first began in 2023, and was diagnosed with the neurological conditions just weeks later after undergoing a series of tests.

Her team said both conditions have “already presented significant hurdles in Wendy’s life”.

“Wendy would not have received confirmation of these diagnoses were it not for the diligence of her current care team, who she chose, and the extraordinary work of the specialists at Weill Cornell Medicine,” they said.

“Receiving a diagnosis has enabled Wendy to receive the medical care she requires.”

Williams chose to share the news to “advocate for understanding” and to “raise awareness” for the difficult conditions.

“Unfortunately, many individuals diagnosed with aphasia and frontotemporal dementia face stigma and misunderstanding, particularly when they begin to exhibit behavioural changes but have not yet received a diagnosis,” her team said.

“There is hope that with early detection and far more empathy, the stigma associated with dementia will be eliminated, and those affected will receive the understanding, support, and care they deserve and need."

“Wendy is still able to do many things for herself. Most importantly she maintains her trademark sense of humour and is receiving the care she requires to make sure she is protected and that her needs are addressed."

“She is appreciative of the many kind thoughts and good wishes being sent her way.”

The TV presenter has previously been open with her medical battle with Graves’ disease and lymphedema, as well as other significant challenges related to her health.

I have hope in having found a new purpose — admittedly one I never would have gone looking for — using the spotlight to help and empower others.”

“I didn’t come to play”: Bruce Willis’ wife smacks down trolls

Emma Heming Willis has been forced to shut down the heartless trolls targeting her in the wake of husband Bruce Willis’ dementia diagnosis.

In a video posted to social media, the 44-year-old model throws away claims that she’s been using Bruce for her “five minutes” of fame, and instead declares that she will turn them “into 10 because I'm always going to advocate for my husband.”

Emma - who has spoken openly about her support for Bruce - once again stressed that she would be using this opportunity to raise awareness, before she was “going to turn my grief, and my anger, and my sadness, and do something good, around something that feels less than.”

“So, watch this space,” she said, “because I didn’t come to play.”

Emma’s message comes barely three days after she reached out to followers, “caregivers, or dementia care specialists navigating this world” alike, seeking advice on how to help “get your loved ones out in the world safely”.

“If you are someone who is looking after someone who has dementia,” she said in the clip, “you know how difficult and how stressful it can be, just to get them out into the world and navigate them safely - even just to get a cup of coffee.”

And while the response to her post was overwhelmingly positive, the cruel few determined to make things worse for everyone just had to say their piece, and to prompt Emma’s fight back.

They were nowhere to be seen in her latest post - possibly hiding with their tails tucked between their legs - and instead, she was once more met with an outpouring of support.
<blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; “Cruel disease”: Bruce Willis given heartbreaking new diagnosis

In a devastating statement on Instagram, Bruce Willis’ family have shared an update on his health, announcing that the actor has been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia.

Bruce’s wife, Emma Heming Willis, shared a picture of Bruce smiling on a beach, with a caption that provided their supporters news of the development in his health battle, and explained that his condition has gotten worse since his aphasia diagnosis in 2022. The same post was shared by Bruce’s ex-wife, Demi Moore, and daughter Rumer.

On behalf of herself and the “Ladies of Willis/Moore”, Emma wrote, “our family wanted to start by expressing our deepest gratitude for the incredible outpouring of love, support and wonderful stories we have all received since sharing Bruce’s original diagnosis.

“In the spirit of that, we wanted to give you an update about our beloved husband, father and friend since we now have a deeper understanding of what he is experiencing.

“Since we announced Bruce’s diagnosis of aphasia in spring 2022, Bruce’s condition has progressed and we now have a more specific diagnosis: frontotemporal dementia (known as FTD). Unfortunately, challenges with communication are just one symptom of the disease Bruce faces. While this is painful, it is a relief to finally have a clear diagnosis.”

In their full statement, the family explained that FTD is a “cruel disease” that is largely unheard of, although it is the most common form of dementia for individuals under the age of 60. Symptoms, which can worsen over time, include a loss of motor skills - from having trouble walking to muscle spasms.

“Today there are no treatments for the disease,” the family wrote, “a reality that we hope can change in the years ahead. As Bruce’s condition advances, we hope that any media attention can be focused on shining a light on this disease that needs far more awareness and research.”

“Bruce always believed in using his voice in the world to help others, and to raise awareness about important issues both publicly and privately. We know in our hearts that – if he could today -- he would want to respond by bringing global attention and a connectedness with those who are also dealing with this debilitating disease and how it impacts so many individuals and their families.”

The statement - from the hearts of Bruce’s wife, ex-wife, and five daughters - concluded with a plea for fans to go out and educate themselves on the disease, and to support the mission to help others, whether or not they had any experience with FTD themselves.

“Bruce has always found joy in life – and has helped everyone he knows to do the same,” they finished. “It has meant the world to see that sense of care echoed back to him and to all of us. We have been so moved by the love you have all shared for our dear husband, father, and friend during this difficult time. Your continued compassion, understanding, and respect will enable us to help Bruce live as full a life as possible.”

In response to the news, fans and fellow Hollywood stars came to share their love and support for the actor, as well as his loved ones as they all come to terms with the new diagnosis.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Emma Heming Willis (@emmahemingwillis)

“Thank you for sharing this with us. We met him where he was hour by hour, minutes by minutes and learned so much him and ourselves. To his and other families with a loved one with FTD, stay strong. Keep fighting. We are all here for each other.”

Image: Instagram

Willie Nelson’s former Tennessee home hits the market

The former home of country music legend Willie Nelson has been listed for sale, and the folklore surrounding it is just as interesting as the home itself.

According to property records, the 150-acre property and its pastures, woods, trails, and cabin have been owned by just two people, including the Georgia On My Mind singer.

“From what we can find from tax records, there have only been two owners. One is the current seller and different members of that family. And the other is Willie Nelson,” Ross Welch, one of the two Zeitlin Sotheby’s International Realty agents representing the property, said.

“This was one of the properties that the IRS seized when Willie was not paying taxes.”

Before the IRS seized the home in the early 1990s, Nelson lived there from the early 1960s.

After settling his tax debt in 1993, the property was returned to the family that had owned it, who then sold it on to the current owners.

“From what we have been told and what we’ve seen on tax records, it was seized by the IRS and then the IRS went back to the family that had previously owned it and asked if they wanted to buy it back for pennies on the dollar,” Matt Lawson, the second agent representing the home, explained.

Prior to its complicated ownership, Nelson built the property’s rustic log cabin, which features lime and mortar from the property in the shower and fireplace.

In 1970, another home on the property caught fire while the singer wasn’t inside, sparking the story in which he rushed home to rescue his beloved guitar Trigger and a pound of marijuana, per Taste of Country.

The events described in Nelson’s hit Shotgun Willie also reportedly took place while he lived at the home and earned him the nickname, though Lawson hasn’t found concrete evidence to confirm the stories.

“One of the biggest stories that I wish I had concrete proof of is that this is the place where he got the nickname ‘Shotgun Willie,’” he said.

“There’s a ton of just wild stories about him out there.”

The sprawling property has been listed for $2.5 million ($AUD 3.9 or $NZD 4.3 million).

Images: @willienelsonofficial (Instagram) / Realtor.com

Explainer: what is aphasia?

After racking up more than 100 films over the span of four decades, Bruce Willis is closing out his stellar acting career. In a statement released by his family, his withdrawal from the spotlight has been attributed to a recent diagnosis with a condition called aphasia.

Never heard of aphasia before? You’re in good company. In a 2020 survey on aphasia awareness, 86.2% of participants had never heard of the condition. Of the few who did recognise the term, a third either had aphasia themselves or personally knew someone who did.

The disorder simply doesn’t have the broad recognition of Parkinson’s disease, cerebral palsy or multiple sclerosis.

And yet, aphasia is more common than any of these, affecting over a million Australians – and twice that number in the US.

So what is it?

Aphasia explained

Aphasia is an acquired communication disorder that impairs a person’s ability to process language – sufferers struggle to speak and to understand others, and often also experience difficulties with reading and writing.

But there’s no one-size-fits-all description of the disorder, and its severity can be wide ranging. In mild cases, aphasia may be barely noticeable. In more severe cases, communication can become near impossible.

Importantly, aphasia is not a disease, but rather a symptom of brain damage. This means that there’s no one single cause of the condition. Instead, aphasia may occur suddenly, often as a result of a stroke or head injury, or may creep up insidiously as a side effect of a brain tumour, infection or dementia.

The exact location of damage to the brain determines the nature and severity of the resulting language dysfunction. Generally, aphasia can be divided into three broad categories:

Broca aphasia: patients have damage to front portion of the language-dominant side of the brain. They may eliminate simple words, like “and” and “the”, from their speech, but can still construct meaningful – if abbreviated – sentences. The patient knows what they wish to say, but simply can’t find the words to say it.

Wernicke aphasia: patients have damage to the side portion of the language-dominant portion of the brain. They often speak in rambling, confusing sentences, adding unnecessary words or creating entirely new words of their own. The patient can hear spoken words without difficulty, or read words in print, but struggles to make sense of them.

Global aphasia: patients with this most severe presentation have more profound difficulties with all aspects of speaking or comprehending language.

Aphasia doesn’t indicate diminished intelligence

The aphasia awareness study offered another telling insight, beyond the lack of recognition of the disorder. Nearly half of all respondents strongly correlated intellectual capacity with speech ability, believing that “if a person has difficulties with speech, they also have intellectual deficiencies”.

While it’s easy to assume that the loss of speech correlates with the loss of an internal dialogue, and consequently of a thinking mind, this is absolutely not true of patients with aphasia – and it’s an assumption that can make interactions with aphasia patients unnecessarily challenging.

Provided the brain injury that caused the aphasia hasn’t impacted other areas of the brain, the damage wrought in the language centre of the brain doesn’t affect what patients remember, or how they think. They retain the same personality – the same bad jokes, strong opinions, and lifetime of stories are still present inside the mind, but now the patient struggles to make them manifest in the external world.

Treating aphasia

Aphasia isn’t necessarily a life-long diagnosis. The brain is a remarkably flexible and resilient organ, and many people with aphasia see dramatic improvements in their language abilities with dedicated treatment.

Research has shown that communication abilities can continue to improve for many years after traumatic injury and the onset of aphasia, though progress is largely determined by the extent of the injury. In slow-developing cases, such as those associated with the onset of dementia, recovery may not be possible – but targeted therapy may still assist in developing ways to build on remaining language abilities, incorporating alternative means of communication such as sign language or pictures.

Increasing aphasia awareness

The tragedy of aphasia lies in its shrouding silence – shut inside their own minds, sufferers struggle to convey the nature of their experience. As a result, despite its prevalence, aphasia is largely unknown in the general community.

This can make life incredibly challenging for aphasic patients and their carers, not only in their personal sphere, but in accessing social and medical services.

Increasing aphasia awareness is a vital step towards alleviating some of the difficulties that patients face. According to the awareness survey, among those who were aware of the condition, movies and television were one of the most commons means of introduction. Tragic though his diagnosis is, Willis’s publicly declared diagnosis with aphasia could make significant inroads in garnering the crucial awareness needed for this silent struggle. His acting career will be widely celebrated, but this may yet be his most vital contribution to the world.

This article was originally published on cosmosmagazine.com and was written by Jamie Priest.

Willy Wonka fun facts

*Willy Wonka Willy Wonka everybody give a cheer HOORAY*

Don’t pretend you did not sing that like the Oompa Loompa’s did because that is such a classic.

Obviously the one with the late Gene Wilder, even though the one with Johnny Depp isn’t that bad either.

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory came out in 1971 and was based on the 1964 book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by British author Roald Dahl.

To this very day it remains a classic to grandparents, parents and even kids who grew up watching it.

We all secretly wished we could visit Willy Wonka’s factory and consume all the chocolate possible…just like Augustus Gloop wanted to.

But did you know that Willy Wonka’s factory wasn’t actually a factory? Yes, the movie has some delicious facts despite being released 51 years ago.

Wonka’s limping entrance was Gene Wilder’s idea

The first time everyone finally meets Willy Wonka is when he is limping. This idea came to Gene Wilder who suggested it would be perfect to keep the crowd on its toes.

The director questioned why he would want to do that to which Gene responded: “Because from that time on, no one will know if I’m lying or telling the truth.”

Almost everything was edible

Remember when Willy Wonka said “everything in this room is edible except for me”? Well they weren’t lying because everything in the factory was edible.

Except for that floral cup he would drink from which was actually made from wax. Gene would bite into it and continue biting until the shot was perfect.

Chocolate river not actually made out of chocolate

Would’ve been a dream come true had that river actually been made out of chocolate. It was however filled with brown-coloured water which eventually stunk up the place.

In the remake, thick, fake chocolate was actually used.

Charlie and Wonka were close in real life

Peter Ostrum, the actor who played Charlie, said Wilder “treated people with respect and dignity.”

He said Wilder would always buy a chocolate bar after lunch and share it with him.

Not a factory

The movie was filmed in Germany and Willy Wonka’s “factory” was in fact a power plant.

The director chose that place on purpose so viewers would not immediately pick up where the story was set.

Roald Dahl HATED it

Author Roald Dahl actually hated the film and refused to grant the film rights to a sequel.

It was only 15 years after he died that a remake was approved.

Image: Getty

Bruce Willis forced to retire after medical diagnosis

Bruce Willis has announced he will be stepping back from acting after a shocking medical diagnosis.

The 67-year-old has been diagnosed with aphasia: a medical condition that can affect a person’s ability to speak, write and understand language, both verbal and written.

“To Bruce’s amazing supporters, as a family we wanted to share that our beloved Bruce has been experiencing some health issues and has recently been diagnosed with aphasia, which is impacting his cognitive abilities,” Bruce’s family wrote in a statement shared to each of their Instagram accounts.

They added that he will be “stepping away from the career that has meant so much to him”.

“This is a really challenging time for our family and we are so appreciative of your continued love, compassion and support,” the family continued.

“We are moving through this as a strong family unit, and wanted to bring his fans in because we know how much he means to you, as you do to him."

“As Bruce always says, ‘Live it up’ and together we plan to do just that,” concluded the statement, which was signed by his wife Emma Heming, his ex-wife Demi Moore, and his five children, Rumer, 33, Scout, 30, Tallulah, 28, Mabel, 9, and Evelyn, 7.

Willis has multiple projects that he has completed that are now in the stage of post-production, including Vendetta, Fortress: Sniper’s Eye and White Elephant.

His upcoming project Fortress 3 is currently in pre-production, with no announcement on the future of the film.

Rumours of Willis' health declining were first pushed by OK! magazine in January 2021, when the actor was kicked out of a Los Angeles chemist for not wearing a mask during Covid-19 restrictions.

He later apologised, saying in a statement that it was “an error in judgement”.
