Trump escapes second assassination attempt

Former president Donald Trump has escaped a second assassination attempt while playing golf at his private club in Florida.

According to local authorities, a Secret Service agent was one hole ahead of Trump when he spotted a rifle barrel sticking out of the fence, which was later found to be an AK-47 with a scope, at the Trump International Golf Club, West Palm Beach on Sunday.

The Secret Service opened fire on the suspect, who fled the scene only to later be pulled over on the highway and taken into custody.

The FBI said Trump had been the subject of “an apparent assassination attempt” at his Florida golf club.

Officials at a media briefing after the incident said a witness took a photo of the suspect's car as he fled the scene, helping authorities track him down.

The Secret Service officer who was on the course and spotted the weapon was praised for doing a “fantastic job”.

“What they do is they have an agent that jumps one hole ahead of time towards where the [former] president was at, and he was able to spot this rifle barrel sticking out of the fence and immediately engaged that individual, at which time the individual took off,” the Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said.

“In the bushes where this guy was is an AK-47 style rifle with a scope, two backpacks – which were hung on the fence that had ceramic tile in them and a GoPro, which he was going to take pictures with.”

Trump posted an update on his social media platform to assure his supporters he was unharmed in the attempted assassination.

“There were gunshots in my vicinity, but before rumours start spiralling out of control, I wanted you to hear this first: I AM SAFE AND WELL!” he wrote.

“Nothing will slow me down. I will NEVER SURRENDER! I will always love you for supporting me.”

The attempted shooting comes just months after Trump was injured during another assassination attempt in July while speaking at a rally in Pennsylvania.

Second marriage asset protection: What you need to know

Of paramount importance for many people in a second marriage is how to protect their assets if their relationship breaks down, or in the event of their death. Although second marriages bring a level of complexity, there are a number of strategies that you can implement to ensure that your assets are protected.

Let’s explore some of the options available to you and what you need to know to protect your assets.

Binding Financial Agreement

A Binding Financial Agreement, often referred to as a pre-nup, allows you and your spouse to put in place a legal agreement which outlines how your assets will be dealt with in the event that your relationship breaks down. Should you wish, it can also extend to the provision of financial support for either party. The intention is for each party to protect their own assets, and such agreements can be put in place prior to a marriage or during a marriage if both parties consent.

Like any legal document, a Binding Financial Agreement needs to be well drafted to ensure that it encompasses all relevant information, and it is important that you seek the advice of a family lawyer to assist you with putting this important document in place.

Joint Assets v Individual Assets

The manner in which you hold your assets is of paramount importance. All joint assets pass to the surviving party. If you and your spouse own a property as joint proprietors upon your death this property will automatically pass to your spouse. By changing the manner in which you hold the property from joint proprietors to tenants in common allows you and your spouse to deal with your individual interest in the property in your respective Wills.

Additionally, you need to be mindful of any bank accounts or other investments that you hold jointly with your spouse as these are not individual assets that you can make provision for and will pass to your spouse upon your death.

Your Will

It is imperative that you put a Will in place that is reflective of your current circumstances and adequately provides for both your spouse and your children from a previous relationship in the manner that you desire. For many parents in second marriages with children from a previous relationship, protecting their children’s inheritance is of paramount importance.

Discretionary Testamentary Trusts which are created in accordance with the provisions of your Will, can make provision for your spouse during their lifetime, whilst also ensuring that most of your assets go to your children.

If you are the sole registered proprietor of your residence in which you and your spouse reside you may make provision in your Will providing a life interest in your residence to your spouse subject to some conditions being adhered to. This will allow your spouse to reside in your residence for the duration of their life then subsequent to their death the property may then pass to your children.

Dying without a valid Will in place deems that you died intestate, and your assets will be distributed in accordance with a government formula and may not end up with the people who you would like to receive them. Your spouse would be entitled to a share of your assets, however this may not have been your intention, or the share that they would receive may be significantly more than you would like them to receive.

It is therefore crucial that you take the time to put a well drafted Will in place so that your assets pass to those who you would like to receive them upon your death.

Mutual Wills Agreement

A Mutual Wills Agreement is a separate document to your Will and essentially is an agreement between you and your spouse that both of you will not change your Will without the consent of the your spouse or their legal personal representative upon their death.

This document is intended to prevent the remaining spouse from altering their Will and disinheriting step-children or making other adverse changes to their Will.

The Right People in Key Roles

The roles of executor of your Will and your attorney in respect to your Power of Attorney documents are important roles and it is paramount that you appoint trusted people to undertake these roles as essentially you are handing control of your assets to those who assume these roles.

Your attorney is entrusted to look after your finances and provide the best care for you in the event that you become incapacitated so you need to choose wisely.

Communication is Crucial

It is important that there is transparency for you and your family. By having important conversations with your spouse and children you can openly discuss your intentions and expectations so that all parties are relevantly informed and fully understand what your wishes are and what you have put in place.

In order to evaluate the best options for you it is important that you obtain the appropriate professional advice to determine which is the best strategy for your own individual circumstances so that the relevant documents are put in place which offer you the best asset protection possible.

Melisa Sloan is principal of Madison Sloan Lawyers and author of Big Moments: Expert Advice for Conquering those moments that define us. www.melisasloan.com.au

Second “royal racist” accidentally named in new book

A second member of the royal family has been accused of being "racist", after the bombshell royal exposé implied them in the scandal over baby Archie's skin colour.

In Omid Scobie's new book Endgame, he discusses the comments that members of the royal family made to Meghan Markle when she was pregnant with baby Archie.

Markle first shared the bombshell allegations in her tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021, but she refused to name the royal family member who made the comments, saying, “I think that would be very damaging to them.”

On Wednesday, reports emerged that copies of the book were being pulled from shelves as the Dutch translation of the book accidentally named the person involved in the scandal.

Omid Scobie admitted he does know who made the comments, but UK libel laws prevented him from naming them in the book.

Now, as copies of the tell-all book have been flying off shelves, it seems another member of the royal family has been implicated in the book, which is now said to be frantically being pulled from shelves.

It comes after Mr Scobie denied responsibility for the Dutch translation of his new book “accidentally naming” a member of the Royal Family.

Publishers Xander Uitgevers yesterday said they were seeking to remove Mr Scobie’s work from bookshelves saying there had been an “error”.

Speaking to Dutch TV on Wednesday night, Mr Scobie defended his book, saying, “The book is in several languages, and unfortunately I do not speak Dutch”.

“But if there are translation errors, I’m sure the publishers will have it under control."

“I wrote and edited the English version. There’s never been no version that I’ve produced that has names in it.”

In the English version, Mr Scobie writes, “In the pages of these private letters [given to Oprah by Markle], two identities were revealed. UK laws prevent me from reporting who they were”.

But the Dutch version reads, “In those private letters, an identity was revealed and confirmed” — before going on to name a senior royal.

Dutch royal reporter Rick Evers says he was one of only two journalists to be given a manuscript of Endgame last Wednesday.

Mr Evers said, “I was shocked that no one else in the world mentioned the fact that a member of the royals was named in the book as the racist”.

“That was the main accusation in the book that I noticed and what I put in my (review) article, which was published with a photo of that royal."

“I began to question if it was only my manuscript that had the name in it. I went to get the book from a store and it was exactly the same,” Mr Evers said.

“A woman called from the publisher saying there was a legal problem and my article had to be removed.”

It is unclear how the error occurred, but Mr Scobie confirmed that the first royal family member named in the book is not the one stated in the letters from Meghan Markle.

"Not my King": Second coronation marred by protestors

King Charles has celebrated his coronation a second time during a ceremony in the Scottish capital of Edinburgh, just two months after being crowned King in London.

The monarch was joined by Queen Camilla, and Prince and Princess of Wales, who are known as the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay in Scotland, for a Service of Thanksgiving and Dedication held in his honour.

During the service inside St Giles Cathedral, the monarch was presented with the symbols of his authority in Scotland – the Crown, the Sceptre and the Sword of State.

The new Elizabeth Sword, named in honour of the late monarch, was commissioned to replace the previous Sword of State as it had become too fragile, having been given to James IV by Pope Julius in 1507.

The sword was carried into the cathedral by Olympic rower Dame Katherine Grainger.

Despite the grand and emotional service, the ceremony was slightly marred by anti-monarch protestors outside.

The protestors stood chanting "not my King" for hours on end so loudly, that the voices could be heard from inside the church during the quieter moments of the ceremony.

Four protestors were later arrested for their disruption.

Prior to the ceremony, Grant McKenzie from the Republic anti-monarchy pressure group, told the BBC's Good Morning Scotland programme that his group would be vocal at the event.

"It's being forced upon us," McKenzie said. "We've got an unprecedented cost of living crisis. I don't think the public in the UK are particularly interested in their tax payer money being put towards a parade up and down the Royal Mile in Edinburgh - it's tone deaf.

"Of course people are going to be able to enjoy it if that's what they want to do. Protests by their very nature are disruptive, we will be making ourselves visible and heard."

The King and Queen didn't let the demonstrators get in the way of the proceedings, which was strengthened by the thousands of crowds who lined the streets of Edinburgh in support of the royal family.

The tradition of a second coronation taking place in Scotland dates back over 400 years, with the late Queen Elizabeth also celebrating the event just weeks after her coronation in 1953.

11 garage sale finds you should never pass up

Vintage furniture

Want to snag the biggest bargain on vintage furniture at a garage sale? The key is to wait until the end of the day. By then, the sellers are wondering how they are going to get that heavy old sofa off of the grass and back into the living room – and they’ll be more likely to take your initial offer. Be careful with upholstered items (bed bug alert!), but once you’re confident it’s clean, try to look past garishly coloured fabric and eye-popping patterns: you can always reupholster a piece of furniture to better suit your sense of style.

Artwork

Garage sale artwork is a great way to add some colour to your home. It’s fun to pick up art for two reasons: you might learn about interesting local artists, or, even if you don’t like the image, you can always repurpose the frame. This is key for larger paintings and drawings, because big frames can be so expensive. Haggle if you want, since art is subjective and the sellers might not have too many interested buyers. Also, odds are that they’re tired of looking at it and just want it gone.

Vintage jewellery

Not to sound old-fashioned, but they don’t make jewellery like they used to – costume jewellery included. Since the popularity of items like brooches has declined over the years, you can usually get a deal on these accessories, and if you like, the possibilities for upgrading them are endless. Give tarnished silver a good polish with a paste of baking soda and warm water. For gold, paying a few bucks for solid pieces should pay off – you can always sell them for scrap or have them melted down to create something new.

Kitchenware

When you see pots and pans at a garage sale, look for rust, non-stick surfaces that are scratched or flaking, and chemical coatings that might leach out into your food. Cast-iron ware, on the other hand, can be salvaged and restored no matter what the condition – and it’ll last forever.

Also, if you find the following items in good working condition, snap them up: stainless steel baking items, kitchen timers, serving utensils, Pyrex or ovenproof glass baking dishes, and quality knives (you can always take them in to be sharpened). Just make sure to wash these great garage sale finds well before use.

Small kitchen appliances

If you’re in the market for an ice cream maker, single-serve smoothie blender, or rotisserie, consider scouring garage sales first. People hold sales to sell off unused items that take up space on their benchtops, and bulky, highly-specialised small appliances are often priced to move. You’ll usually be able to scoop them up for a fraction of their retail price – even if they’ve only been used once or twice.

Jackets

When it comes to apparel, jackets can be among the best garage sale finds. Since sellers spring-clean before their sales, bulky or unworn winter coats and vests are some of the first things to hit the to-go pile. Check for holes and wear before purchasing, and dry clean or give a good washing before putting in the wardrobe for next year. For children, buy the next size(s) up and store in a cupboard for future seasons.

Tools

Tools like drills, saws, nail guns and compressors can be great garage sale finds. As long as the seller can prove that they’re in good working condition, snap them up. Ask how old the product is and how much it has been used over the years. Always keep an eye out for rust, which usually means the integrity of the metal is compromised, making the tool more dangerous to work with.

Silverware

Odds are you can pick up a stylish silverware set for cheaper than what you can find new at most stores, plus you’re likely to hear a cool back-story to boot. There’s also a chance that what you’ve got is actual silver. How can you tell? On the back of silver-plated items there will be markings that can include the company name, the country in which it was made, a product number, and the electroplate marking. Don’t miss this garage sale find!

Bicycles

Bikes can be a great garage sale find, but it’s important to take them for a test drive before you commit to the purchase. Hardcore bargain-hunters might consider bringing a wrench to adjust the seat and get a real feel for how it rides, paying particular attention to the condition of the brakes and tyres. (Although tyres can always be filled with more air, check the treads for wear and the sidewalls for cracking.) For kids’ bikes, the owner’s children might not have used the item much before they outgrew it, but ask.

Exercise equipment

This is one of the best garage sale finds! A lot of people lose interest in their fitness gear quickly, which means you can get the equipment you’ve been looking for at half the price or better. Look for big-ticket items (elliptical machines, treadmills) as well as other indoor merch like hand weights in autumn/winter, when New Year’s resolutions are long forgotten. Research the equipment first: it’s important to know where certain machines tend to wear out the most.

Books

Bulk up your home library with new favourite reads, especially children’s books (kids outgrow their books quickly as their reading comprehension increases) and hardcover classics.

This article originally appeared on Reader's Digest.

Princess Eugenie has expanded the ranks of the royals with the arrival of her second child - another son with husband Jack Brooksbank.

To celebrate, the princess took to her official Instagram account, sharing two pictures of their new bundle of joy - one of the baby by himself, and another with his proud big brother, August.

“Jack and I wanted to share the news that we had our little boy,” she captioned the pics, “Ernest George Ronnie Brooksbank on 30th May 2023 at 8.49 weighing 7.1lbs.”

Eugenie then made the touching explanation that little Ernest’s name was more than regal, but also meant a lot to the history of their family, too.

“He is named after his great great great Grandfather George,” she said, “his Grandpa George and my Grandpa Ronald.”

And last but certainly not least, she shared that “Augie is loving being a big brother already.”

Some have speculated that Eugenie could be referring to either King George V - who would actually be Ernest’s great-great-great grandfather - or King George VI, while others have noted that the name also honours Jack’s father George, and Sarah Ferguson’s father Ronald.

Either way, fans were delighted to hear the happy news, whether from Eugenie or from Buckingham Palace.

“Princess Eugenie and Mr Jack Brooksbank are delighted to announce the safe arrival of their son, Ernest George Ronnie Brooksbank," a palace statement read. "Ernest was born on Tuesday, 30th May, and weighed 7lbs 1oz."

And it was in response to Eugenie’s photos that they came out in droves to celebrate, showering the family in their love and congratulations for the first royal baby since the death of Queen Elizabeth II, and coronation of King Charles III.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Princess Eugenie (@princesseugenie)

“Congratulations Eugenie,” one wrote. “Your heavenly grandma Lilibet and grandpa Philip would have been so proud and thrilled after hearing the news of the arrival of another great-grandchild”.

“Huge congratulations to you both!!!” another gushed. “To a lot of great memories as a family of four now. Your grandma as well as your grandpa are looking down on you with a lot of love!!”

“Congratulations with the birth of your son Ernest … August is a big brother now and have someone to play with for later,” one declared.

Meanwhile, a few took the opportunity to note that young August bore a striking resemblance to his cousin, Archie.

“Congratulations!” someone shared. “August looks so much his CA cousin in that second photo.”

“Is it just me or does Augie look just like Archie?” another asked.

“Auggie looks like Archie! Congratulations on your new baby boy!” one more shared.

And if there was one thing they could all agree on, it was that the new royal - 13th in line to the throne - was a “beautiful” addition to the family.

Images: Instagram

Second M*A*S*H star to pass away in just one month

Actress Eileen Saki, best known for her role as bar owner Rosie in the hit series M*A*S*H has died.

The 79-year-old had been fighting pancreatic cancer, and “passed away peacefully in Los Angeles” on May 1, according to PEOPLE. Eileen’s fellow M*A*S*H star, Judy Farrell, had died just one month prior on April 2.

Eileen’s manager, Camilla Fluxman Pines confirmed the devastating news in a statement to the publication, writing that “she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in January.

"She was a lung cancer survivor in 2004.She got a second chance at auditioning and working in the industry that she loved so much - she shot a couple big commercials shortly before her diagnosis.

"She was often recognized by face or even just voice by people who knew they knew her 'from somewhere' - and loved talking to young actors about the journey."

Suki’s former co-star Jeff Maxwell, who brought the character Igor Straminsky to life on M*A*S*H, honoured his late friend with a social media post, sharing the news of her passing on the official page for his MASH Matters podcast.

“Our sweet Eileen. Our sassy Rosie,” he wrote, before going on to extend his appreciation - as well as that of her husband, Bob - to Eileen’s devoted fans and followers who offered her their love and their support in her final days, before promising to share more on Eileen as the day went on, and encouraging others to do the same.

“Our sweet, sweet Eileen. How we love you,” he concluded. “How we will miss you.”

True to his word, Jeff went on to post a few favourite Eileen moments, from her most recent work in advertisements, to time on screen with the likes of Mickey Rooney and Dom Deluise, and last - but certainly not least - as “a scene with a certain sassy bartender”.

Saki had actually been the third actress to portray Rosie, having taken over from Frances Fong and Shizuko Hoshi for her eight episode stint. In the end, she was the final and longest-running owner of Rosie’s Bar, and remains dear to her co-workers and fans for it.

“You will forever be in our hearts!” one commented, in a sentiment shared by many.

“Sorry to hear of her passing. Great memories at Rosie’s,” said another.

“She was the best Rosie of them all and such a great actress,” one declared. “So sorry to hear she passed on.”

“One of the finest roles ever played,” someone agreed, before requesting that she “say hello to Col. Blake, Trapper, Major Burns”.

And as one said on behalf of them all, “you fought the great fight, Eileen. Now, rest easy, for your burdens and struggles are behind you. Love and strength to the entire family during these hard days ahead.”

Images: Facebook

You’re wasting your money if you’re buying these 13 things in brand-new condition

Exercise equipment

There’s a good chance exercise equipment like treadmills, ellipticals, and dumbbells, are still in good condition.

“Many people buy these items with the intentions of starting a regimen but fall off quickly and then try to unload these bulky goods that take up too much room,” says consumer and money-saving expert Andrea Woroch.

Just make sure to research the brand and test the equipment before you buy, she says. In addition to the usual spots like garage sales, a local gym that’s getting renovated might be selling old equipment at killer prices, says Woroch.

Hand tools

There are so many used hand tools like hammers and wrenches on the market that there’s no reason to buy new, says Shelton.

If you’re on the market, he recommends checking out a surprising spot.

“Pawnshops are a great place for used tools,” says Shelton.

“A lot of times they’re coming from trade because people change jobs.”

Gift cards

“Buying gift cards used may seem like an unusual idea, but it’s actually becoming more mainstream as a unique way to save money,” says Woroch.

You can save 10 to 30 percent on store credit at your go-to shops, or gift cards to give as presents, she says.

Tech gadgets

At the rate new technology comes out, a used phone or laptop from five years ago probably isn’t worth the buy.

But last year’s model could be a great value without making you feel like a dinosaur.

For instance, Apple sells certified refurbished laptops and computers with limited warranties.

Head to a big-box store or phone carrier for a refurbished smartphone, which are usually good quality, says Shelton.

Beware of buying used tech from companies you don’t know though.

“It’s already an off-brand, cheaply made product,” he says.

“If it’s been refurbished, it’s already had an issue, so there’s a pretty good chance it won’t last very long.”

Sports gear

Equipment for specific sports, like skis or golf clubs, are also a good idea to pick up used, says Shelton.

Beginners often buy the items but don’t stick with the sport, meaning the gear is still in great condition.

And if you don’t want to be that person shelling out hundreds on a sport you or your kid doesn’t love, you won’t lose much on a used version.

“If you find out you don’t like it, you could sell it to someone else and save money in the process,” says Shelton.

Vehicles

“New cars lose considerable value as soon as they leave the dealership’s lot, so it’s always best to buy used,” says Woroch.

Find a model that’s a year old and doesn’t have many miles for a like-new ride that costs way less.

You can even find cars on sites like Gumtree or eBay, but don’t take the price at face value.

Always negotiate with the seller.

Furniture

You can save tons of cash on furniture by buying preowned instead of new, especially if you shop at the right time.

Tax season, spring-cleaning time, and the holidays usually have the best prices and most options because people are often trying to downsize or sell those big-ticket items, says Shelton.

Clothing

Thrifting your clothes can save you up to 90 percent on everything from jeans to tuxedos, says Woroch. “Have a second phone”: Aussie spy chief’s warning on social media use

MPs have been urged to use a second phone if they want to access social media apps such as TikTok, after one of Australia’s top spy bosses spoke about how these apps use our personal information.

Rachel Noble, the Director-General of the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD), recommended that politicians and their staff should adopt the practice during a Senate estimates hearing.

She also said that having a phone without access to social media was the only way to have “absolute certainty” of data privacy.

“Our advice was, frankly, for people who are members of parliament who might be particularly targets of espionage … that if you wanted absolute certainty that your social media app couldn’t have access to those things … would be to have a second phone which you exclusively use for that,” Ms Noble said.

The warning comes after it was reported earlier this year that the ASD had confidential meetings with politicians and their staff to warn them that some apps undertake excessive data collection and request access to contact lists, location data and photos.

Last year, the Department of Home Affairs restricted TikTok use on work phones, joining the Department of Defence in doing so.

During the hearing, Ms Noble said that in some cases social media apps were collecting additional information extending “beyond the content of messages, videos and voice recordings”.

“Social media apps are monetising what you do on your phone, what you access, what you look at for how long, who your friends are – they will seek to get demographics of your friends in order to push you the information and get you to buy things,” she said.

With some apps headquartered outside Australia, such as China, Ms Noble said the information collected could be accessed legally or be subject to covert collection.

Sectors of the Australian public service aren’t the only ones restricting use of social media apps on work phones, with parliaments in the United States and New Zealand warning against using TikTok on government devices.

Image: Getty Images

Tips for buying a second hand car

If you’re not a car expert, buying a used car can be tricky. Here’s a few simple tips to make the process easier.

Second hand or used cars are an affordable option when you’re looking to purchase a vehicle that will get you from A to B. However, if you’re not a car expert, it can be difficult to determine if the pre-loved vehicle you’re buying is reliable and trusty, or will need extensive repair work to make it roadworthy. Having said that, you can buy a used car without having studied exactly what makes a car run.

Your insurance company won’t cover the costs of damage that was already on the vehicle when you purchased it. These costs will need to be covered by you. It’s for this reason that it’s important to do a thorough check of the vehicle, both internally and externally, before buying it. Follow these basic guidelines to help ensure you buy a gem and not a lemon.

Take a sniff
“The first thing to do is check the interior of the car really closely,” says David Skapinker from over 50s insurer, Apia. “If there has ever been water damage to a car it might only show under the carpeting, but ultimately it could lead to rust issues. What we suggest is to take a bit of a sniff around the car. It sounds funny but the water damage may actually show itself as a musty smell.

“We would also suggest people check for things like scuffing, loose trimming and upholstery tears. Basically, anything that is considered pre-existing damage to when you take out an insurance policy won’t be covered by that policy, so the costs to repair that really will be up to you.”

Don’t forget the boot
Another key area to check is the car’s boot. Take a look inside the boot to check if the vehicle has any internal damage, which could be the result of a previous incident.

“If the car you’re buying has had a rear-end accident the external damage may have been fixed, but it’s very hard to fix the internal damage easily,” Mr Skapinker explains. “Take a good look at the exterior very closely too. If panels are slightly different colours, this might mean that damage from an accident has been repaired. There may be nothing wrong with that, but it’s worth getting an independent check of the quality of past repairs before you commit to buying the vehicle.”

Check for rusting, small scratches and dents, and if you’re happy to live with these, then go ahead with your purchase. However, if you’re hoping to get these fixed, keep in mind a new insurance policy wouldn’t cover it as pre-existing damage is not included. .

Getting mechanical
From the boot to the bonnet, it’s important to check the mechanics of the car as well. “If you are someone who is comfortable taking a look under the bonnet, common things to look out for are blocks or wear and tear around the carburettor, fuel injector, timing belts and spark plugs,” Mr Skapinker says. “For those who wouldn’t know where the carburettor is located, there are companies you can get in touch with who send out independent inspectors to thoroughly check the vehicle for you.”

After giving your potential purchase an inspection, take it for a test drive as this is one of the most important steps in purchasing a second hand car. When you’re taking the car for a spin around the block, check the wheel alignment is not pulling the vehicle to the left or right, ensure the tyres and brakes work properly and that there are no odd sounds coming from under the bonnet. “Listen out for sounds like knocks and rattles,” Mr Skapinker says.“This can be a good indicator that something may be wrong.”

Remember, this is a large purchase so take your time before making a decision. Be prepared in knowing what you want, what to look out for and what your limits are.

The 30 seconds that changed Johnny Ruffo’s life forever

Johnny Ruffo made the (literal) last-minute decision to apply to the X-Factor auditions – a move which he now credits for his life changing irrevocably.

The 34-year-old was still tossing up between whether or not he should apply for the singing show in 2009, and when he did he only had 30 seconds to do so before the cut-off kicked in and he would miss his chance forever.

Of course, he went on to wow the judges and made it to the top three – which eventually saw him rise to fame and head off on tour tour with One Direction and The Backstreet Boys.

“I was fairly happy with the path that I made for myself,” Ruffo says.

“I had concerts, I was doing performances and shows, and I was really quite happy with how everything was going.”

It was a few years later, in 2017, when Ruffo was first diagnosed with brain cancer as he struggled with multiple headaches.

His girlfriend Tahnee Sims pushed him to go to hospital where he was told that if he hadn’t come in then he wouldn’t have woken up the next day.

But the Home and Away actor has now revealed that his cancer is back and it is terminal.

As he struggled through the headaches, Ruffo was forced to wait four months before seeing a specialist.

“The anxiety levels go up through the roof and you’re just waiting and waiting,” he told 7 Entertainment.

“And it’s like it feels like six months, but it’s only a week. And that’s just honestly... a day feels like a month.”

It was only when he suffered 11 seizures in four days that Ruffo was rushed to hospital where he underwent an MRI scan.

There they found multiple tumours and determined that he would have to start treatment immediately.

“It felt like another kick in the teeth... yeah, dammit,” he said.

The terminal diagnosis gave Ruffo a new “goal” in which he is waiting for Christmas where he will reunite with his brother and “best friend”, who has been away in Ireland for the past three years.

He has also released a book, No Finish Line, dedicated to his girlfriend, in which he details his experiences recording music, acting, his girlfriend, family and partying.

The title, he explains, is that “it wasn’t the end”.

Ruffo is currently receiving chemotherapy injections every three weeks which he says are making him feel like “s***”.

I’m always fatigued, just walking up a set of stairs,” he says.

“By the time I get to the top I just want to have a sleep.”

Images: Instagram

"10 seconds left to live": Skydive survivor recalls horror moment

Young Aussie Emma Carey has recalled the gut-wrenching moment she realised she only had “10 seconds left to live” during a freak skydiving accident that happened nine years ago.

Emma Carey, now almost 29, is lucky to be alive after her parachute became tangled and then strangled her instructor during a tandem skydive. The pair fell 14,000ft out of the sky.

The accident unfortunately went down on the fifth day of her three-month long overseas trip when she decided to skydive in Switzerland alongside her best friend. Emma realised something was seriously wrong when she spotted the parachute flapping out in front of her rather than in the air above. When the parachute was finally deployed it became tangled with the strings of the safety chute and choked her instructor, causing him to pass out almost instantly.

“I remember thinking, oh my god Jemma will have to find me on the ground, I remember thinking about my family and the main thing I remember feeling is regret for not embracing myself fully up until that point” she shared.

The then-20-year-old copped the brunt of the fall, landing facedown with the instructor on top of her. Quickly trying to roll him off, she became distraught realising she couldn’t feel anything from the waist down. Ms Carey was rushed to hospital where surgeons operated on her back and pelvis. Her spine was broken in two places, rendering her a paraplegic.

After recovering from surgery, she was reunited with her family and friends in Australia where she started rehabilitation. By some miracle, she slowly but surely began to get the feeling back in her legs and eventually learned to walk, albeit with a small limp.

However, Ms Carey has remained positive throughout the ordeal and now looks at the terrifying moment she felt sure she was going to die as a “rebirth”.

“I know how it feels. To think I only have 10 seconds left to live and now I get the rest of my life, whatever that is, so I think it's actually really nice for me to have that memory because it helps to keep me grateful,” she said.

Carey has written a book “the girl who fell from the sky” detailing the day her life was changed forever.
It has been nine years since the shocking incident and little did she know, nine years later she would be where she is today.

Image: Nine
