Sarah Ferguson sends her well wishes to Kate Middleton

Sarah Ferguson has shared a hopeful message for Kate Middleton in the wake of her cancer diagnosis.

The Duchess of York, who has battled both breast and skin cancer in the last year, said she was impressed and proud of the Princess of Wales for coming forward with the news of her diagnosis, while also sending her well wishes as her health journey continues.

In a statement to her Instagram page, Fergie wrote, "All my thoughts and prayers are with the Princess of Wales as she starts her treatment. I know she will be surrounded by the love of her family and everyone is praying for the best outcome."

She continued, "As someone who has faced their own battle with cancer in recent months, I am full of admiration for the way she has spoken publicly about her diagnosis and know it will do a tremendous amount of good to raise awareness."

"I hope she will now be given the time, space and privacy to heal."

The Duchess is no stranger to difficult diagnoses, as she shared the news of her skin cancer diagnosis in January - just months after undergoing surgery for breast cancer.

On Saturday, Kate Middleton confirmed she had been diagnosed with cancer in a personal video message released by Kensington Palace, following weeks of speculation and controversy surrounding the true state of her health.

Happy ending after company's awful retirement send-off

An elderly gentleman in the United States, who had faithfully served as an "extremely dependable" employee for 42 years, recently experienced a remarkable change in his fortunes, thanks in large part to the generosity of individuals from Australia.

John Bartlett, the dedicated worker in question, had received underwhelming recognition from an unnamed company for his decades of commitment. His daily 40-minute commute on public transportation to a job paying only the minimum wage went largely unnoticed until recently, causing widespread consternation.

Sonia, one of his colleagues, was deeply moved by the perceived injustice and decided to share a video clip of Bartlett's story online. In her post, she expressed her wish that his hard work had been better acknowledged and thanked him for his unwavering loyalty. She noted that Bartlett loved his job so much that he was reluctant to retire, receiving nothing more than a barbecue and a certificate as a token of appreciation.

After sharing Bartlett's story on social media, Sonia was inundated with messages from people eager to contribute to his well-deserved retirement. Responding to this outpouring of support, she set up a GoFundMe campaign, inviting the public to contribute "a little something for a better retirement" for him.

Within a matter of days, the fundraiser received an overwhelming response, with donations and messages pouring in from around the world, including numerous contributions from Australians. The campaign was eventually closed after more than 1,900 individuals contributed, resulting in a total of A$57,454 for Bartlett's retirement fund.

In his 70s, Bartlett was left speechless when Sonia shared this incredible news with him. She conveyed the global impact of his story and the messages of support he had received from people across the globe. Overwhelmed by the gesture, Bartlett could only smile and nod in response.

“They left messages for you," said Sonia in the video. "So I’m going to print it out and go ahead and make something nice for you so you can read it on your own time. We started the GoFundMe because they wanted to give you something for your retirement on their part and it just blew up overnight. You deserve it, OK? I’m going to make sure everything goes to your account, just for you.”

Supporters encouraged Bartlett to use the funds for special treats, like a grand holiday or for spending time with loved ones. Messages from donors expressed their heartfelt wishes for his retirement and new beginnings.

Sonia expressed her gratitude to the donors, assuring them that every cent raised would be placed directly into Bartlett's account. In her final update to the GoFundMe account, she thanked donors for their kindness and reaffirmed her commitment to ensuring Bartlett received every penny, attributing the success of the campaign to their collective efforts.

In the end, the power of community and compassion won out, as people from all walks of life came together to make a meaningful difference in the life of an individual who had dedicated so much to his job.

Images: TikTok

“You deserve more”: Company slammed over measly send-off party

A company has been slammed online for their measly attempt to farewell a hard-working employee of 42 years.

John Barlett was a dedicated worker for four decades, commuting long distances to work at minimum wage and give his all to his colleagues.

After 42 years of hard work, John announced his retirement from the company, prompting a measly farewell party from his place of work.

One of John’s longtime co-worker, Sonia, was devastated over the injustice, sharing a short clip to social media of John – now in his 70s – and what she felt was his hard work going unappreciated.

“Today is my co-worker’s last day. He worked for this company for 42 years making minimum wage,” Sonia wrote with the video.

“The company only threw him a barbecue and gave him a certificate. He takes the bus and Bart (train) to get here every day on time. He’s 70+.”

“He loves working here so much he didn’t want to retire. [He got] No bonus, just a barbecue and a certificate. Don’t be a slave to your job. Thank you John for your loyalty.”

The video quickly went viral and was flooded with comments of support for John, with one person even suggesting that John start a GoFundMe for people to contribute to his retirement.

In the fundraiser, she revealed John could not drive because of a disability, but “rain or shine” would always make it to work.

He was “extremely dependable”, Sonia added, revealing it had been difficult to convince him to take a break because he always wanted to work.

He was “one of the most talented and hard working” employees at the company and his energy was “unmatched”, she said.

“He has no wife or kids, however he does have a nephew whom he loves dearly,” she wrote in the fundraiser.

“It would be nice to give him some kind of company or something to do so he knows that he’s special and loved.”

In the few days since the GoFundMe was created, it has raised almost $45,000, as many shared their comments of support.

One person wrote, “Happy retirement, John. You deserve more than what this company has offered you. Wish you all the best in your life and your future.”

Airline sends woman 13 brand new suitcases as compensation

A woman has been left shocked and confused after being sent 13 brand new suitcases as compensation.

Giséle Rochefort was flying with Delta Airlines in the US when her luggage was badly damaged on her flight.

"Delta destroyed my suitcase. "The audacity": Mum spots man sending vile texts about her and her son midflight

A Qantas passenger has been left stunned after seeing a man writing “racist” texts about her and her son after claiming the toddler kicked the back of his chair.

The woman and her one-year-old had been aboard Qantas flight QF158 from Auckland to Melbourne when she saw the disgruntled passenger describe her as a “fat Islander woman” and her son as a “black kid kicking me”.

She took to Facebook to share her story, saying the ordeal brought her to tears and had her questioning if she could ever fly without her husband again.

The mother said the tension between her and the man seated in front of her son began when he turned around and shook his head at the one-year-old.

She asked the man if anything was wrong, whom she claims responded, “I just hope he doesn't kick my seat the whole way”.

She said she felt confused because, from her son’s position, his legs could barely dangle off his chair, let alone kick the seat in front.

The mother told the passenger in front that her son’s legs were too short to do so and added that if he was so concerned about sitting in front of a child, then he should have flown business class.

Mid-air, the mother spotted the man venting his anger to a friend via text, referring to her as a “fat Islander woman” and her son as a “black kid”.

“I feel as though the whole interaction had nothing to do with my son 'kicking' his chair but merely something to do of how we looked with his racial comments or simply because I had a child who was sitting right behind him,” she wrote.

The woman claimed when she confronted the man about the nasty texts, he appeared “shocked” and immediately started to delete the message.

At this point, the mother said that she and her son were both “tired, frustrated and mad”.

The mother eventually moved to the back of the plane after a flight attendant was made aware of the ordeal.

In her Facebook post, she thanked a man and his teenage son who volunteered to sit in their original seats behind the disgruntled man.

“I'm not one to share anything or write statuses but this one I was prompted to in the hopes that if you see anything like that I hope you are not a bystander like the many people on that flight who didn't bother to help or do anything.”

Despite the incident, she and her son are doing well, but she will “definitely” not be travelling without her husband ever again.

Facebook users flocked to the comments and were quick to sympathise with the woman.

“Your so brave, even in tears you still the bigger person who stood up for yourself against such bullying and racism,” one comment read.

“Traveling with a toddler is hard and that punk made it worst for you!” another said.

“I'm so sorry you had to go through that sis, my gosh the audacity this man has,” a third wrote.

This common bathroom practice could send germs flying everywhere

No matter how thorough you are with cleaning your bathroom, there's one common mistake you could be making that regularly fills the space with germs.

According to home hacks expert Stephanie Booth, that habit is leaving the toilet lid up when you flush. You’ll probably never do it again once you hear what she has to say about it in a TikTok.

@stephanieboothrealtor Who’s still flushing their toilet with the lid open? And all that bacteria lands on all the nearby surfaces, including your toothbrush," she said.

If you're wondering just how true this claim is, it's been backed up by Australia's favourite scientist Dr Karl Kruszelnicki, explaining why it’s such a gross habit in a video of his own.

@drkarl Do you need scientific evidence to make your housemates flush with the toilet lid shut? NASA’s Perseverance rover sends back Mars soundscape playlist

Nearly two years after its launch, and almost 18 months after landing on Mars, NASA’s Perseverance rover has hours of audio recordings from the red planet’s atmosphere.

So, what does Mars sound like? On the whole, it’s quiet. Very quiet. But the recordings did pick up interesting weather events and changes which give us a better overall picture of Mars’s clime.

Perseverance’s primary mission is to explore sediments in a dormant river delta on the edge of the 45 kilometre-wide Jezero Crater, to learn about the crater’s formation and hopefully find signs of ancient life. But microphones are light and cheap, so it made sense to add a couple to the rover’s instruments.

The first audio from Mars was sent by Perseverance earlier this year. Now, a year’s worth of recording from the Martian atmosphere has been condensed into about five hours of sound.

The findings are due to be presented by Baptiste Chide of the Los Alamos National Lab during a seminar, “Mars soundscape: Review of the first sounds recorded by the Perseverance microphones,” at the 182nd Meeting of the Acoustical Society of America tomorrow, May 25, in Denver in the US.

With no large dynamical natural phenomena, extant animal species (that we know of), industrial civilisation, or extreme weather events, you’d expect Mars to be pretty silent. And it is. Under the same conditions on Earth, sounds are 20 decibels louder than on Mars.

“It is so quiet that, at some point, we thought the microphone was broken!” says Chide.

But, like giving a new music album a second run-through, closer listening revealed some fascinating phenomena. The group heard much variability in the wind and abrupt changes in the atmosphere, see-sawing from calm to intense gusts.

The team noticed that the red planet’s soundscape is seasonal. During winter, carbon dioxide freezes in the polar caps. This causes changes in atmospheric density, and environmental volume fluctuates by about 20%. Atmospheric CO2 also causes high-pitched sounds in the distance to become fainter.

The rover also used laser sparks to calculate the speed of sound’s dispersion, confirming a theory that high-frequency sounds travel faster than low frequencies.

“Mars is the only place in the solar system where that happens in the audible bandwidth because of the unique properties of the carbon dioxide molecule that composes the atmosphere,” notes Chide. While the rover will continue to record audio as it travels across Mars’s surface, Chide believes that the technique could be applied to studies of other celestial bodies. Planets and moons with denser and more volatile atmospheres, such as Venus and Titan, may yield even more information as sound waves interact more strongly and travel further.

This article was originally published on Cosmos Magazine and was written by Evrim Yazgin. Woman’s monthly spend sends shockwaves

A woman who earns a $100,000 salary has shocked people with how she budgets her generous pay cheque.

The video shared to TikTok by Smart Women Society breaks down the 28-year-old Sydney project manager’s spending.

After taxes, compulsory student loan payments (HECS) and superannuation, the woman was left with $5,297 a month.

The woman’s financial goal is to “top up emergency fund” as well as go on a lavish holiday at the expense of $3,000.

A list of all her expenses amount to $4,215 a month, with that pay going toward her mortgage, bills, transport, phone, groceries, health, insurance, internet, subscriptions and charity.

Broken down, the woman spends $2,200 on her mortgage, $400 on bills, $30 on her phone, $250 on transport and $140 on her health.

She also spends $500 in groceries, $500 in insurance, $70 for internet and $25 for subscriptions, and $100 given to charity.

The video noted that the woman only had her HECS debt of $32,000 which is already taken out of her pay.

This then leaves the woman with only $1,082 after paying all her expenses.

Smart Women Society suggested, based on her goals, that the woman put $300 toward her emergency fund, $400 for her end-of-year holiday, and $382 for “fun spending”.

Viewers were left shocked and confused at the anonymous woman’s spending habits, with many questioning why she is paying so much in charity and insurance.

“$382 for ‘fun’ in Sydney, is this a joke?” someone wrote.

“You’re young…$500 on insurance seems excessive,” another wrote.

“$300 spending? For the entire month? Good luck. Cost of fun in Sydney she’s going to need at least $300 a week,” a viewer pointed out.

“How is someone on $100k a year only left with $85 a week for personal spending? That's not even a night out in Sydney,” another joked.

“She should move out of Sydney,” someone suggested.

Images: TikTok

Denazify Ukraine? This is not true!

“Ukraine is a country with a Jewish president, a Jewish president I might add, whose father’s three brothers were all murdered by the Nazis.

“You see, Ukraine did not start this war. Neither did the nationalists or Nazis. Those in power in the Kremlin started the war. This is not the Russian people’s war.

“As a matter of fact … what you should know is that 141 nations at the UN voted that Russia was the aggressor.

“They called for it to remove its troops immediately. Only four countries in the entire world voted with Russia. This is a fact.”

Schwarzenegger spoke about how Russian artillery and bombs have destroyed “whole city blocks”, including hospitals, and of the three million refugees who have fled the country.

“It is a humanitarian crisis,” he said.

“Because of its brutality, Russia is now isolated from the society of nations. You’re also not being told the truth about the consequences of this war on Russia itself.

“I regret to tell you that thousands of Russian soldiers have been killed.

“They have been caught between Ukrainians fighting for their homeland and the Russian leadership fighting for conquest.”

He said that both the citizens and soldiers had been lied to by the government, and that the wildly different things they have been told - from going to fight Nazis to particpating in training exercises - were all false.

He then questioned the Russian government’s willingness to sacrifice soldiers for “your own ambitions”, and urged Russians listening to help him spread the truth.

“Let your fellow Russians know the human catastrophe that is happening in Ukraine,” he said.

Schwarzenegger’s message came as Ukrainian cities continued to be bombed, with the capital Kyiv being the target of missiles early on Thursday morning.

The southern city of Mariupol was also the target of heavy attack, with city officials estimating at least 2400 people had died as a result.

According to US authorities, an estimated 28,000 Russian soldiers have been killed or wounded during the three-week invasion.

Image: @schwarzenegger (Instagram)

I spent 40 minutes on my makeup to meet his friends and coworkers at a grand opening for the retail company he works for.”

“He was too embarrassed to be seen with me in this outfit, so he sent me home in an Uber and went to the opening without me.”

Nikki shared the details of her fleeting relationship with her online followers, as she admitted it was not the first time the man had commented on her appearance.

She said, “It all started with little comments here and there over the past couple of weeks like “Why are you wearing heels? I like it when you wear tennis shoes. Why are you wearing so much makeup? I really like it when you’re natural.”

After sharing the details, her followers were quick to give her relationship advice.

One person commented, “ “Remember: This is him in the beginning. This is him on his best behaviour. Run.”

Many others told Nikki she deserved a lot better, and described it as “a blessing” that she got out of the relationship early, to which Nikki responded, “I deserve better than this.”

Since the nightmare date, Nikki has made sure to dress exactly how she wants to.

Neighbour sends confronting note about a nearby home’s exterior

A neighbour has been left feeling shocked after they received a scathing note that details how they have been letting down their street.

The author of the letter, who is new to the neighbourhood, has detailed all the ways that the house needs to be renovated to keep up appearances.

The letter was posted on Reddit, and reads, “Dear neighbour. Just thought I'd drop a line to ask you to do something with your house.

"We recently moved in and are down the corner from you, and yes the front yards are very small, and the landscaping is very minimal, it's easy to clean, plain, fixup and garden these homes, especially in the front.”

The letter goes on to detail how the author’s family nominated the house as “the worst on both sides of the block”, as they tell their children “that’s where the lazy’s live.”

The letter goes on to rattle off a list of things they expect to be done to their neighbour’s house, including having the house painted, lawn mowed, weeds removed and “showing some initiative.”

The author even wonders if the residents “have absolutely no pride”, as they insist they “do something with the front of that s*** hole.”

The Reddit post welcomed a flood of comments from sympathisers, saying the author’s request is uncalled for and unfair.

While some users shared their own experiences with nightmare neighbours, many people told the recipient of the letter to simply adorn their front lawn with “plastic flamingos and lawn gnomes”.

Another thought it was a good idea, adding, "Flamingos might be too tame. I think it's time to invest in a modest display of giant lawn gnomes in raunchy poses."

Image credits: Getty Images / Reddit

Eager to learn: A man’s love for his wife sends him to beauty school

While we might think grand gestures are the best way to show loved ones we care, it can be the smallest things that can really get the message across.

One man found this to be true when news of his act of kindness for his wife flooded social media recently.

The elderly man, realising that his wife’s ailing vision meant she struggled styling her hair with curlers as she had done for so many years, stepped in to help.
Cybersecurity expert Brian Krebs has alerted the public about a worrisome location tracking feature on Apple’s latest iPhone 11 Pro.

He revealed on his website KrebsOnSecurity that even if you turn off your location services on the latest iPhone, the phone intermittently tracks your location and sends the data to Apple anyway.

The Location Services Privacy policy reads:

“Location services allows Apple and third-party apps and websites to gather and use information based on the current location of your iPhone. If Location Services is on, your iPhone will periodically send the geo-tagged locations of nearby Wi-Fi hotspots and cell towers (where supported by a device) in an anonymous and encrypted form to Apple to be used for augmenting this crowdsourced database of Wi-Fi hotspot and cell tower locations.”

However, in the video below, you can see the purple arrows which mean that location services are still being used despite the services being turned off.

Krebs notified Apple and said that an engineer got back to him, saying that they “do not see any actual security implications”.

“We do not see any actual security implications,” an Apple engineer wrote to Mr Krebs.

“It is expected behaviour that the Location Services icon appears in the status bar when Location Services is enabled. The icon appears for system services that do not have a switch in Settings.”

Mr Krebs tried to replicate the tracking issue on an earlier iPhone 8 but was unable to, which points to a possible issue with the iPhone 11 Pro devices themselves instead of the software.

Apple later disclosed to Krebs that the behaviour is tied to the inclusion of a new short-range technology that lets iPhone 11 users share files locally with other nearby users that support this feature.

Apple also said that a future version of its mobile operating system will allow users to disable it.
