Filling the silences in family stories − how to think like a historian to uncover your family’s narrative

Andrea Kaston Tange, Macalester College

Great-grandmothers. We all have them. But most of us will never know them except through glimpses of fading bits of paper: sepia photographs, recipe cards, letters in handwriting traced by a fountain pen dispensing cocoa-colored ink.

What does it take to build coherent stories out of such tantalizing fragments of lives? I face this question routinely in my career as a professor of 19th-century literature and culture. Recently, I’ve turned that experience to writing a book about my own family.

When I inherited my great-grandmother’s diary, a repurposed teacher’s planner in which she chronicled the family’s 1926 move from Michigan to Miami, I found a wedding portrait tucked inside. The angled profile showcases her youthful skin and a dress too elaborate for a Midwestern schoolteacher’s daily wear. It is easy to imagine that she took pleasure in inscribing her new name on the picture’s reverse: Faith Avery.

I stared at her beautiful image for years, as if details of her satin gown could explain why a woman widowed in 1918 would, for the rest of her life, refuse to admit to having had that first husband and yet carefully preserve this portrait.

And then, because archives have been at the center of my scholarly work, I turned to research. I located marriage records and draft cards, pored over maps, found family members in censuses and obituaries. Within those documents lay answers both surprising and poignant.

What did I look for? How might anyone with a half-told family story begin to uncover more truths? And what does it take to make sense of them?

The digging

Questions that begin with “why” can rarely be answered easily. Researchers thus often prefer to start with “who” and “when” and “how,” locating a person in one spot and then tracing them through time. This adventure down a rabbit hole follows a method.

Make a list of unknowns. These may be facts or enticing tidbits of incomplete family lore. My mother, trying to be helpful, told me things like, “Faith always said there was a horse thief in the family, but she was too mortified to reveal his name” and “I think Aunt Harriette (Faith’s sister) was married once briefly.”

Do precise, not general, searches. Typing “horse thief Avery” into Google yields nothing useful, but many other sources contain rich information about old-fashioned exploits. The New York Public Library’s guide for family research introduces some options. The Library of Congress print and photograph collection can also help you envision your ancestors’ world. Physical libraries contain historic photographs, maps, local records and digitized newspapers not available online. Historical societies and state universities typically allow free, in-person use of their collections.

Know that sometimes you will fail and need to change course. I spent several days looking for the horse thief to no avail, much to my mother’s disappointment. But when I turned to Aunt Harriette’s marriage, I found a character no less fascinating, one I now think of as “Four Wives Frank.”

Read old documents knowing they were produced by a patchwork of individuals who took information on trust. The handwritten birth, death, marriage and census records of past centuries relied on self-reported data that required no verification. They can be plagued by carelessness in the name of efficiency.

One hurried census-taker recorded Faith’s mother Cara as “Cora,” another renamed her brother Horace “Harris.” Frank offered up a variety of birth years, countries of origin and maiden names for his mother as he worked his way west. He must have been charming. Who but a charming man could have convinced woman after woman to marry him, each thinking she was, at most, his second wife? Marriage register officers and census-takers, not to mention his trail of brides, were none the wiser.

Which leads me to this: Cross-check information. I knew I had the right Frank because he had the same three sons in multiple records. Inconsistencies across those records, in conjunction with the trajectory of his life, made this conclusion inevitable: The man purposefully reinvented himself.

The assembly

My academic work has taught me that most archival answers lead to more questions. As a result, I expect multiple phases of collecting. I gathered everything I could find about Faith’s early life, in hopes something might explain her reticence about her first marriage. As her story emerged, I periodically hit holes in the narrative that sent me back for more digging.

Understanding people is easier if you are familiar with their world. For background, I read histories of Miami in the 1920s and researched details in Faith’s diary that might reveal her personality or motivations. Exploring her reading lists showed me a woman who enjoyed popular entertainment, such as 1926’s blockbuster “Aloma of the South Seas.” Primers of 1920s wages and prices explained the family’s economic worries.

As I got to know Faith, I revisited documents with new questions. To figure out whether Harriette’s husband Frank had anything to do with Faith, I made timelines for both sisters. To ponder the emotional underpinnings of those events, I reread Faith’s diary, paying particular attention to entries about Harriette and about Faith’s second husband.

Because every pile of documents contains multiple stories, the key to a coherent narrative is locating a through line that addresses the biggest conundrums while identifying the tangents. I let go of the horse thief.

The results

The detective-style plots of what I call “investigative memoir” may inspire you to do your own family research. Genealogy sites such as Ancestry.com and FamilySearch.org can help.

But it’s worth remembering that secondary reading will add richness to any family story. And local librarians are extraordinary at helping patrons navigate the search process.

Improbable as it might seem, Four Wives Frank helped me understand the extent of Faith’s secrets and that she harbored them in hopes that her children’s lives would be easier. Such self-sacrifices are common for mothers. And yet, their particulars are as individual as the faintly silvered portrait of the soft young woman who married Harold Avery in 1911, and whose story requires an entire book to tell properly.

Andrea Kaston Tange, Professor of English, Macalester College

This article is republished from The Conversation under a Creative Commons license. World No.1 golfer breaks silence after bizarre arrest

World No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler has broken his silence after he was arrested and charged by police on Friday, ahead of the second round of the PGA Championships.

Scheffler was detained by Louisville Metro police, after he drove onto a curb to try and get around a fatal accident that occurred in front of the Valhalla Golf Club.

Earlier that morning, a man who was working for a vendor at the tournament, was hit and killed by a shuttle bus while attempting to cross the street near the golf club.

The tragic incident caused the road to close in both directions, but Scheffler reportedly “refused to comply and accelerated forward” when Detective Bryan Gillis stopped the golfer to give instructions.

The police report obtained by ESPN also said that the detective who stopped him “suffered pain, swelling and abrasions to his left wrist and knee."

Scheffler was charged with felony assault on a police officer, criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding signals from an officer directing traffic and was released almost four hours later.

He returned to the golf course and issued a statement on the incident before completing his second round.

“This morning I was proceeding as directed by police officers,” Scheffler began.

“It was a very chaotic situation, understandably considering the tragic accident that had occurred earlier and there was a big misunderstand of what I thought I was being asked to do.

“I never intended to disregard any of the instructions.

“I am hopeful to put this to the side and focus on golf today.

“Of course, all of us involved in the tournament express our deepest sympathies to the family of the man passed away in the earlier accident this morning. It truly puts everything into perspective.”

After completing the second round, he spoke further about the incident and said: “My head is still kind of spinning, I can’t really explain what happened this morning."

He also recalled stretching and doing his warm-ups in the jail cell, in attempt to lower his heart rate.

“I was never angry. I was just in shock, and I think my body was just -- I was shaking the whole time. I was shaking for like an hour. It was definitely a new feeling for me," he said.

An officer even offered him a sandwich.

“I was like, ‘Sure, I’ll take a sandwich’. I hadn’t eaten breakfast yet. I mean, they were really kind. I’m grateful that we have such strong police, and they’re our protectors out there, and like I said, we just got into a chaotic situation this morning. That’s really all it was," he recalled.

Scheffler’s lawyer Steve Romines said that there was a bit of confusion as the officer directing traffic didn’t appear to be part of the tournament traffic detail “and that’s where the miscommunication arose”.

He also said that they will be pleading not guilty and told The Golf Channel that charges against Scheffler “will either be dropped or we will go to trial because Scottie didn’t do anything wrong.

“We’re not interested in any sort of settlement negotiations or anything like that. It was just a big miscommunication.”

Images: Twitter

Baby Reindeer's "real life stalker" breaks silence

The woman believed to be the inspiration for the stalker "Martha" in Richard Gadd's Netflix hit Baby Reindeer has denied the allegations that she stalked the show's creator.

The show depicts an aspiring comedian - Donny Dunn, played by Gadd himself - who meets a woman at a bar and she quickly develops an unhealthy obsession with him.

Fiona Harvey, 58, the person believed to be "real life Martha", spoke to Piers Morgan on his Uncensored YouTube show on Thursday and said that she was planning to take legal action against both Netflix and Gadd for the attention the semi-autobiographical show got her.

“You’re 100 per cent it’s not you?” Morgan asked.

"Yes,” she replied.

Harvey reportedly received death threats after internet sleuths tracked her down within hours of the show's premiere.

She also said that she only met a him a few times, and that the show's portrayal of events - including the one where they first met - were completely fictionalised.

“He didn’t offer me a cup of tea. No one gets anything free from the Hawley Arms,” she told Morgan, referencing the real-life pub Gadd worked at.

“He interrupted a conversation with another barman he said, ‘Oh, you’re Scottish,’ and basically commandeered the conversation.

“You know, I was talking to somebody. It’s pretty rich. So he seemed to be obsessed with me from that moment onwards.”

In the show, Gadd also claimed that he had received 41,071 emails, 744 tweets, 106 pages of letters and 350 hours of voicemail from the woman who Martha is based off, and Harvey denied this, although she did send him a few emails.

“There may have been a couple of emails exchanged. Just some jokey banter,” she said.

“I have no idea (where the other emails and communications came from). I think it’s probably made up himself.

“I don’t see how anyone could do 41,000 emails.”

When asked to put a number on the emails she had sent, she replied: “A handful, 10? Not 41,000”.

“Even if the email thing was true, the rest is not,” she added and said that “I wouldn’t be suing if there were 41,000 emails out there."

She also said that she never sexually assaulted him, contacted his parents or attacked his girlfriend and was never charged – let alone convicted – of any offence, another claim that the show made.

When asked by Morgan if she thought Gadd was “mentally unwell,” she replied "yes".

”I think he always was. Whether that rape was real or conceived in his mind. He's completely off his head,” she said.

“He’s crazy and wants to make this up," she added.

“My mind is made up – he is a lair”.

Morgan then asked her if she had a message for Gadd, and she went straight to the point: “Leave me alone please. Get a life. Get a proper job. I am horrified at what you’ve done”.

Image: Piers Morgan / Netflix

Keep being strong!" while another person hoped she was doing well and encouraged her not to let the negativity of others affect her soul.

Another fan commented on the renewed criticism and social media attacks on a woman they don't even know, urging people to "do better."

Back in 2004, Loos was accused of having an affair with Manchester United star David Beckham while she was working as his personal assistant. At the time, Beckham had been married to Spice Girls singer Victoria Beckham since 1999, and the allegations became a significant media sensation.

On October 4, Netflix released the documentary series Beckham, which delves into the football player's career and marriage, including addressing the rumours of his infidelity in the early 2000s. Both David and Victoria Beckham discuss the impact of tabloid rumors on their marriage during the series.

Victoria, in an individual interview for the series, admitted, "It was the most unhappy I have ever been in my entire life," and she shared how challenging it was, especially because they felt pitted against each other. David also acknowledged the difficulty of that period, emphasising Victoria's importance in his life and how hard it was to see her hurt but doubling down on their determination to overcome it together.

Images: Instagram

"I will die sorry": Phillip Schofield breaks his silence on his career-ending affair

Former This Morning host Phillip Schofield has broken his silence over his affair with a colleague 30 years his junior in an interview with The Sun.

And while the disgraced British television star shared that he had been left feeling “utterly broken and ashamed” over the whole ordeal, he stressed that any rumours of grooming were not true.

“I did not,” he told the publication, after a week of the social media rumour mill running riot. “I did not [groom him].”

“I know the photos of us circulating on Twitter look shocking, but I’m not a groomer,” Phillip insisted.

He noted that “there are accusations of all sorts of things”, but claimed that had never been an abuse of power, as “we’d become mates … but of course I understand that there will be a massive judgement, but bearing in mind, I have never exercised that anywhere else.”

According to Phillip, the two remain friends. And although the ex-show runner had been 30 years younger than him at the time of their affair, he added that the relationship had only begun after the man was 20 years old, when “something just happened between us that changed everything.”

“I assume somebody, somewhere, assumed something was going on, correctly” he shared, “and didn't say anything.

“At the time I did not think about it possibly ruining my career. I really probably only thought about it when I saw the rumour mill, and saw it growing.

“Then I saw the link with the drama school photo [from] all those years before, and thought, ‘this looks shocking’."

However, as Phillip said, he hadn’t lied in order to protect his own career, but instead because the other man in the affair hadn’t wanted “his name in public. He wanted his own life.”

Phillip explained that “the lies grew bigger and bigger and bigger”, and that it was starting to have a deep effect on both of them.

“It got to the stage where it was out of control,” he said, “and for whatever cost, it had to stop.

“I have massive guilt, and regret. I’ve made a mistake, I’ve had an affair at work.”

“I think my greatest apology must go to him,” Phillip revealed. “It has brought the greatest misery into his totally innocent life, his totally innocent family, his totally innocent friends.

“It has brought the greatest grief to them.”

He added that the pair hadn’t spoken since the story broke - and that he also no longer speaks to his former friend and co-host Holly Willoughby - but that when things began to spiral out of control, he’d “paid for his lawyers to independently work on his behalf.

“I am deeply sorry and I apologise to him because I should have known better. I should have acted the way I have always acted. I should not have done it.

“I’m sorry. And I will forever be sorry. I will die sorry. I am so deeply mortified.”

Images: Getty

Assault victim breaks silence after Rolf Harris' death

Warning: This article contains information about sexual assault which some readers may find distressing.

One of Rolf Harris's victims has spoken out about the "impact of evil" the disgraced entertainer had on her life, after the news of his death broke around the world.

Karen Gardner, a presenter for the the BBC, accused the convicted pedophile of assaulting her three times when she was his 16-year-old bag carrier for the show Star Games in 1977.

Upon hearing the news of his death, Gardner wrote on Twitter, "Very few of us escape the impact of evil people. What we have to do is expose them, share and stand together to dilute the pain."

"For me it was Rolf Harris but he inflicted much worse on other girls."

Ms Gardner shared the details of her harrowing experience in the recent ITV documentary Rolf Harris: Hiding in Plain Sight, which aired just last week.

She told the program, "In the space of I guess about 35 minutes, he assaulted me three times in plain sight. And it was horrible because you're surrounded by people, and he had a method of operating."

"I won't talk about the actual details, but he was paying me attention, he was saying how great I had been, and he, he hugged me, and that that's when, when it happened. And it was humiliating and degrading and awful and your, your blood turns to concrete."

"And then it was mid-afternoon and they had organised a couple of taxis and one of the cars came to get him. And I had to get in the back seat of the car."

Ms Gardner said Rolf got beside her and assaulted her again, adding, "Maybe because there wasn't anyone there, I did tell him to f**k off. And he said something, which makes, still makes me feel sick now. He said to me, 'You're irresistible.' I was 16. He was 48. He was 10 years older than my dad."

Harris was acquitted of assaulting Ms Gardner after the jury could not reach a verdict at two trials.

Rolf Harris' death was confirmed on May 23rd, while his death certificate states he died at the age of 93 on May 10th, after a battle with neck cancer.

Image credits: ITV / Getty Images

Fergie breaks her silence on coronation snub

Sarah Ferguson has opened up about not being invited to the coronation of King Charles and Queen Consort Camilla.

Last week, the Duchess of York revealed she did not receive an invitation to the crown of His Majesty, due to take place in Westminster Abbey on May 6th.

Fergie is not among the 2,000 people expected to attend, despite knowing the king since she was a child.

Instead, she is expected to watch the event on TV at Royal Lodge, which she shares with disgraced ex Prince Andrew.

Speaking candidly on Good Morning Britain, Fergie shared the exact reasoning she wasn't invited.

She said, “I‘m not invited because it’s a state occasion. Being divorced you can’t have it both ways."

“I am enjoying being divorced to my husband - not from my husband."

“I am close with King Charles and Camilla. The great thing at this moment is the unity of family."

“In private I can be there. It‘s a great feeling to be part of the family.”

Earlier this month, she told ITV1’s Loose Women she always planned to watch the Coronation on TV.

She said, “I will be having a little tea room and putting out the bunting. I love to watch it on the telly because the commentators are always good.”

Despite not being invited to the ceremony, the Duchess will have a seat on the East Lawn of Windsor Castle 24 hours after the ceremony.

She will be joined at the bash by other royals believed to include daughters Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, plus 20,000 lucky ticket holders.

Courteney Cox breaks silence over Spare claims

Courteney Cox has finally addressed her unexpected cameo in Prince Harry’s memoir Spare, debunking the Duke’s claims.

In the book, Prince Harry shared an anecdote about going to the Friends actress’s home where he’d helped himself to a “box of black diamond mushroom chocolates” in her fridge that led to a wild, hallucinatory trip.

After unveiling her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the 58-year-old actress confirmed to Variety that the royal had once stayed at her house for “a couple of days”, but denied she’d been the one offering up the mushrooms.

“He did stay here for a couple of days — probably two or three. He’s a really nice person,” she said.

“I haven’t read the book. I do want to hear it, because I’ve heard it’s really entertaining. But yes, it’s gotten back to me about it. I’m not saying there were mushrooms! I definitely wasn’t passing them out.”

In Prince Harry’s best-selling memoir, he admitted he had become a “Friends fanatic” after becoming engrossed in the series while dealing with mental health issues and panic attacks after his second tour of Afghanistan in 2013.

In the years following, during a trip to Los Angeles with a friend, he’d spontaneously crashed at Cox’s house while party-hopping.

“We went from the home of [my friend] Thomas’ girlfriend to the home of Courteney Cox. She was a friend of Thomas’ girlfriend, and had more room. Also, she was travelling, on a job, and didn’t mind if we crashed at her place,” Harry wrote.

“No complaints from me. As a Friends fanatic, the idea of crashing at Monica’s was highly appealing. And amusing. But then … Courteney turned up. I was very confused. Was her job cancelled? I didn’t think it was my place to ask. More: Does this mean we have to leave?”

“She smiled. Of course not Harry. Plenty of room,” he said. “Great.”

The story was one of many eyebrow-raising revelations in Harry’s memoir, including details of private clashes with Prince William, a story about losing his virginity, and recounting having a frostbitten penis while he attended William and Kate’s wedding.

“We are devastated”: Family break silence over daughter’s intense Madeleine McCann claims

Julia Wendell’s story has been all over the internet in the past week, with one question on the tip of everyone’s tongue: is she telling the truth?

Julia, a 21-year-old from Poland, is convinced that she is the missing Madeleine McCann, who would only now be 19.

While highlighting the similarities between the two girls, Julia has also declared that she has been unable to source photographs from her childhood, and her own birth certificate. It has also been widely reported that Julia’s parents, who have denied her claims, have refused to partake in a DNA test.

“For us as a family,” they said in a statement to a Polish missing persons website, “it is obvious that Julia is our daughter, granddaughter, sister, niece, cousin, and step niece.

“We have memories, we have pictures. Julia also has these photos, because she took them from the family home with the birth certificate, as well as numerous hospital discharges.”

They spoke of how they tried to “get [Julia] back on her feet” after she left the family home, and opened up about how she sought fame when she was younger, with her eye on becoming something like a singer or a model.

“What’s happening now is she has got 1 million followers,” her family said. “The internet won’t forget, and it’s obvious that Julia isn’t Maddie. We are devastated at this current situation.”

At this time, neither London’s Metropolitan Police nor the Find Madeleine campaign have issued statements about Julia’s claim. However, they have previously provided updates on other potential leads, suggesting that they don’t put much stock into Julia.

Regardless, the Polish woman is pressing forward, with reports that she intends to go to court over DNA testing with her parents.

Dr Fia Johansson - who has been acting as Julia’s representative in a series of Instagram videos, and is a psychic medium and private investigator - announced the move.

As Dr Johansson told 7News, “when I’m talking to her … she’s crying and saying ‘I just need to understand the truth, all I want is for my mum and dad to do the DNA test with me’.

“But basically her father said, ‘no, we are not going to’.”

She went on to explain that if her parents were going to refuse, then they would be forced to take legal action. And while speaking to The Sun, despite the media frenzy Julia has sparked across the globe, Dr Johansson claimed they want to “be very respectful” in their approach.

“We want to be very respectful to the McCann family, and respect the privacy of them and their kids while we don’t know exactly who Julia is.

“My feeling is that we need to force the mother, or a member of Julia’s family, to take the DNA test rather than disrupt the peace of Kate and Garry, which is not necessary.

“If a current family member will take a DNA test we could solve this, but they are refusing to.

“I have been personally talking to Julia’s mother and told her we will make her safe and secure in any way she needs, but she is still refusing to take the test. She claims she has Julia’s birth certificate, but our worry is that you can easily forge this.”

Images: Instagram

Harry and Meghan break their silence on "boring and baseless" South Park episode

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have broken their silence after being portrayed in an episode of South Park, in which they were ruthlessly mocked and ridiculed.

The animated TV show released their newest episode, titled The Worldwide Privacy Tour, which depicted the royal couple embarking on a promotional tour for the Prince's new book titled "Waaaah".

After the episode aired, reports emerged that Meghan Markle was left "upset and overwhelmed" by their merciless slating on the show, while a royal commentator speculated that the couple's lawyers were "casting an eye" over the cartoon series.

Despite these claims, a spokesperson for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle has debunked rumours that they would be suing South Park over the episode, blasting the claims as "boring and baseless" in a statement given to Newsweek.

The statement did not mention Harry and Meghan's personal feelings towards the episode, nor did it address claims that the couple's lawyers will be monitoring the show in order to see whether South Park's creators launch any fresh attacks on the pair in the future.

U.S. royal commentator Kristen Meinzer also told Newsweek that is was easy to see why the couple were not taking legal action.

She said, "I highly doubt Meghan and Harry are suing a satirical cartoon that famously ridicules everyone."

"If anything, they'll know they're in good company with other decent people who've been raked over the coals by the show."

"For example, South Park has repeatedly ridiculed Al Gore and his efforts to combat climate change. They made fun of Steve Irwin for being killed by a stingray just a few weeks after his death."

"They turned Rob Reiner into a punchline because of his weight. They've never been a bastion of good taste, and they've absolutely been offensive, but again, they're also a cartoon, not a news outlet—and Harry and Meghan are unlikely to take a cartoon to court."
