Is hyaluronic acid as effective as skincare brands claim?

Lian Liu, University of Surrey

Hyaluronic acid has become a huge buzzword in the beauty industry, with everything from creams and cleansers to shampoos containing it. Often, these products are marketed to consumers with the promise that hyaluronic acid will boost hydration – important for keeping the skin looking its best.

Hyaluronic acid is ubiquitous in our organs and tissues, playing a crucial role in the function of our cells and tissues.

Hyaluronic acid has been in clinical use for decades, for example, as an injectable between joints to help lubricate cartilage. But at the turn of the century, cosmetic companies began using it as a moisturising ingredient in cosmetic products.

Topically, it’s thought that hyaluronic acid works by holding and retaining water molecules in order to hydrate the skin and restore elasticity, preventing wrinkles. When combined with sunscreen, hyaluronic acid may be capable of protecting the skin against ultraviolet radiation as it has antioxidant properties (meaning it prevents damage caused by oxidising agents, such as ultraviolet radiation).

One of the most frequent marketing claims used to sell hyaluronic acid is the long-held belief that hyaluronic acid holds 1,000 times its weight in water. This means it can maintain moisture and reduce moisture loss.

But this claim has been called into question recently, with numerous publications recently discussing the findings of a pre-print paper which suggests this claim is not true.

The authors of the pre-print, researchers from the University of California, looked into the molecule-binding properties of hyaluronic acid and water to test the claim that it can hold 1,000 times its weight in water.

To do this, the researchers created a solution containing 1g of hyaluronic acid and 1,000g of water (0.1% of hyaluronic acid), which was compared with just water. They then applied heat to both solutions, measuring the thermal changes that occurred. They found that there was not much difference in the changes that occurred in the 0.1% hyaluronic acid solution compared with the pure water. They therefore concluded that the long-held claim is not true.

These findings may have consumers wondering how well their hyaluronic acid products actually work if it doesn’t hydrate the skin as much as previously claimed.

How hyaluronic acid works

While there’s no disputing the experimental results obtained, the conclusion on hyaluronic acid’s water-holding capacity is not applicable to all forms of hyaluronic acids.

Hyaluronic acid comes in different molecular sizes. This pre-print only looked at one medium-sized hyaluronic acid molecule in their experiments. This means the results may only be true for products containing medium and smaller sized hyaluronic acid molecules.

When hylauronic acid interacts with water, its water-loving and water-hating parts lead to electrostatic repulsion. This enables large numbers of hyaluronic acid molecules to form networks, which look a bit like honeycombs, and expand.

The larger the hyaluronic acid’s molecule size, the more capable it is of forming these honeycomb structures – and also the more able it is to retain water relative to its own weight.

Hyaluronic acid with larger molecular sizes will form these networks at a concentration of 0.1%, meaning it can hold 1,000 times its own weight in water. Some very large molecules will even form these networks at a concentration as low as 0.05%. This means it can hold 2,000 times its weight in water.

It’s also worth noting that hyaluronic acid doesn’t just hold moisture and hydrate the skin. Because of its hydrating and antioxidant effects, it also promotes cell regeneration and stimulates collagen production. So hyaluronic acid’s benefits go beyond its ability to retain water.

Although this paper may have partially debunked one popular claim about hyaluronic acid’s moisturising abilities, that doesn’t mean you should stop using it. The research still shows there’s no doubt about hyaluronic acid’s moisturising abilities, which can leave skin softer, smoother and with fewer wrinkles. Plus, hyaluronic acid’s antioxidant effects promote the growth of new skin cells and collagen.

But if you want to make sure you’re getting the most effective product possible, look for one containing multiple weights of hyaluronic acid molecules (sometimes labelled as “triple weight”, “multiweight” or “multi-molecular weight”). Also look for a product containing a minimum hyaluronic acid concentration of 0.1%.

This is because research suggests products containing a formulation of multiple sizes of hyaluronic acid molecules could be more beneficial for skin than formulations containing only one molecule size. This is partly due to smaller molecules permeating skin better, while the larger ones hold more water.

Lian Liu, Reader, School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, University of Surrey

This article is republished from The Conversation under a Creative Commons license. 9 beauty hacks for when you’re running late

Spritz on dry shampoo

When you don’t have time to wash or blow-dry your hair, dry shampoo is your new best friend. One quick spritz is a shortcut to volume and oil-free hair. Simply spray the dry shampoo directly at the roots and massage in for a clean, tousled look. Beauty expert and blogger, Jeanette Zinno, shares her special trick, “Use a dry shampoo at night to wake up with fresh textured hair. It has all night to work and absorb.”

If you’re in a pinch and don’t have any dry shampoo on hand, run a dryer sheet across your hair, suggests Rochelle Maribojoc from Spa Pechanga. Though it sounds strange, it effectively picks up static, dirt, and oil; even if you plan on throwing your hair into a ponytail or messy bun, it’ll look leagues better.

Stock up on travel-size products

If you’re constantly running late (hey – no judgments!), having a to-go makeup bag full of mini hair and makeup products at the ready is a lifesaver. On those harried mornings, simply grab this trusty tote and do your beauty routine on the fly (on the train or when you get to your office).

Makeup artists, Sam & Nic Chapman, share, “Travel-ready products are fantastic in a bind. If you haven’t had enough time to perfect your look in the morning, you’ll have the tools to freshen it up throughout the day.”

Take advantage of multipurpose products

Multi-purpose products help reduce the number of products you use and can be applied in less time. For example, a colour stick the can be used for cheeks, eyes, and lips. “I love it because it’s also very small, so you can take it on-the-go too,” Zinno says.

Dry nail polish fast with ice water

We’ve all been there – you’re going to an event or getting ready for a date, and you didn’t have time for a manicure. Of course, there’s no such thing as speedily painting your nails, as polish requires ample drying time, except, that is, if you use this brilliant trick from Zinno.

“Soak your freshly-painted nails in a bowl of ice water for a minute; the cold will dry them quickly. Make sure you have the bowl ready before you paint your nails so you don’t mess them up!”

Skip the foundation

Unless your skin has a lot of unevenness, you really don’t need foundation 24/7. When you’re in a hurry, you can get away with dabbing concealer under eyes, down the bridge of the nose, on your chin, and on any problem areas like dark spots or pimples.

“Using your concealer for spot-concealing is the best time-saver as it provides evenness of tone, while giving your complexion a natural, not-fussy look,” says CEO of Veil Cosmetics, Sébastien Tardif, who adds that you want to pick a concealer that matches your skin tone for the most flattering finish.

Apply eyeliner on the "negative space"

While cat liner and smoky eyes require a time commitment, filling in the negative space (the area of skin on your eyelid between your lashes and eye) is extremely easy and gives instant definition and make your lashes look fuller without any mascara.

Smudge eyeliner for an instant smoky eye

For the quickest smoky eye, “Simply line your eyes using a creamy eyeliner and smudge with your ring finger (it’s the weakest, so it’s the best for blending without pulling your delicate eyelid skin),” shares beauty expert and professional makeup artist, Sona Gasparian, “In just a few seconds, you’ll have a simple Parisian look!”

Blush is a must

Although contouring your full face will eat up too much time, blush is too important to skip, especially in the morning when most of us tend to roll out of bed looking pasty or sallow. If you’re super tight on time, dab a tinted lip balm on your cheeks and blend for a creamy blush alternative.

“A little bit of colour on our cheeks can go a long way – the colour makes you look more alive without barely even trying,” says BH Cosmetics.

Swipe on a dark lip colour

A red, plum, or sophisticated brown lip hue can elevate your look and make others think you dedicated a whole lot of effort on your appearance, even when you didn’t.

Choose a lip stain and you won’t even have to re-apply throughout the day, says Liz Fuller from Makeup Artistry Inc, “One quick pat on the lips in the morning as you’re running out the door, and you can forget about it for the remainder of the day.”

This article originally appeared on Reader's Digest.

How should I add sunscreen to my skincare routine now it’s getting hotter?

Monika Janda, The University of Queensland; Caitlin Horsham, The University of Queensland, and Katie Lee, The University of Queensland

Sun exposure is the number one cause of skin cancer – including the most deadly form, melanoma. High levels of sun exposure cause an estimated 7,200 melanomas in Australia each year.

Too much sun exposure can also lead to premature ageing, resulting in wrinkles, fine lines and age spots.

Can a tweak to your skincare routine help prevent this?

When should I start wearing sunscreen?

In Australia, we are advised to wear sunscreen on days when the ultraviolet (UV) index reaches three or higher. That’s year-round for much of Australia. The weather forecast or the Cancer Council’s free SunSmart app are easy ways to check the UV Index.

Besides “primary sunscreens”, which are dedicated sun-protection products, a sun protection factor (SPF) is also found in many beauty products, such as foundations, powders and moisturisers. These are called “secondary sunscreens” because they have a primary purpose other than sun protection.

Primary sunscreens are regulated by the Therapeutic Goods Administration and the SPF must be determined by testing on human skin. SPF measures how quickly skin burns with and without the sunscreen under intense UV light. If the skin takes ten seconds to burn with no sunscreen, and 300 seconds to burn with the sunscreen, the SPF is 30 (300 divided by 10).

Is the SPF in makeup or moisturisers enough to protect me the whole day?

Simple answer? No. SPF 30 mixed into foundation is not going to be as effective as a primary SPF 30 sunscreen.

Also, when people use a moisturiser or makeup that includes SPF, they generally don’t do the three key steps that make sunscreens effective:

putting a thick enough amount on

covering all sun exposed areas

reapplying regularly when outdoors for a sustained amount of time.

One study had 39 participants apply their usual SPF makeup/moisturisers and photographed them with UV photography in the morning, then again in the afternoon, without reapplying during the day. The UV photography allowed the researchers to visualise how much protection these products were still providing.

They found participants missed some facial areas with the initial application and the SPF products provided less coverage by the afternoon.

Another consideration is the product type. Liquid foundation may be applied more thickly than powder makeup, which is generally lightly applied.

The Therapeutic Goods Administration tests primary sunscreens so they’re effective when applied at 2mg per 2 square centimetres of skin.

For the face, ears and neck, this is about one teaspoon (5mL) – are you applying that much powder?

It’s unlikely people will cake on their moisturiser thickly and reapply during the day, so these products aren’t effective sun protection if outdoors for a sustained amount of time when used alone.

If skin products with SPF aren’t giving me better protection, should I stop using them?

These products can still serve a protective purpose, as some research suggests layering sunscreen and makeup products may help to cover areas that were missed during a single application.

When layering, SPF factors are not additive. If wearing an SPF 30 sunscreen and makeup with SPF 15, that doesn’t equal SPF 45. You will be getting the protection from the highest product (in this scenario, it’s the SPF 30).

A good metaphor is SPF in makeup is like “icing on the cake”. Use it as an add-on and if areas were missed with the initial sunscreen application, then there is another chance to cover all areas with the SPF makeup.

Should I apply sunscreen before or after makeup?

It depends on whether you’re using a chemical or physical sunscreen. Chemical sunscreens need to absorb into the skin to block and absorb the sun’s rays, whereas physical sunscreens sit on the surface of the skin and act as a shield.

When the main ingredient is zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, it’s a physical sunscreen – think the classic zinc sticks you used to apply to your nose and lips at the beach. Physical sunscreens are recommended for people with sensitive skin and although they used to be pretty thick and sticky, newer versions feel more like chemical sunscreens.

For maximum sun protection when using chemical sunscreens, apply sunscreen first, followed by moisturiser, then makeup. Give the sunscreen a few minutes to dry and sink into the skin before starting to put on other products. Chemical sunscreen should be applied 20 minutes before going outdoors.

When using a physical sunscreen, first apply moisturisers, followed by sunscreen, and then makeup.

When reapplying sunscreen, it’s recommended to wash off makeup and start fresh, but this isn’t going to be practical for many people, so gently patting sunscreen over makeup is another option. Physical sunscreens will be most effective for reapplication over makeup.

What type of sunscreen should I use?

The best sunscreen is the one you actually like to apply. Protecting your skin on a daily basis (and not just for trips to the beach!) is a must in Australia’s high UV climate, and should be done with a primary sunscreen.

Look for sunscreens that have the label “broad spectrum”, which means it covers for UVA and UVB, and has at least SPF30.

Then experiment with features like matte finish, milk texture or fragrance-free to find a sunscreen you like.

No sunscreen provides 100% protection so you should also use other sun protection such as protective clothing, hats, sunglasses, using shade and avoiding the sun during peak UV hours.

Skin care and makeup products with SPF is better than nothing, but don’t rely solely on your morning makeup for sun protection the entire day.

Monika Janda, Professor in Behavioural Science, The University of Queensland; Caitlin Horsham, Research Manager, The University of Queensland, and Katie Lee, PhD Candidate, The University of Queensland

This article is republished from The Conversation under a Creative Commons license. The best skin-care routine for oily skin, according to dermatologists

What is oily skin?

Oily skin is exactly what it sounds like: skin characterised by the production of a lot of oil. If you’re constantly dealing with shininess, always feel like your face has been hit by an oil slick by the end of the day or tend to notice a bit of oil buildup across your nose and forehead, it may be time to invest in a skin-care routine for oily skin.

Need another reason to target oily skin with your daily regimen? Because it produces so much oil (also known as sebum), this skin type often goes hand in hand with acne. But take heart: if you’re battling breakouts, you’re in good company. According to the Australasian College of Dermatologists, acne is the most common of skin diseases and up to 85 per cent of Australians will develop it during their lifetime.

Luckily, there are great skin-care formulations that can help oily skin avoid acne and stay healthy, and some formulas may even help curb oil production. Finding the best skin-care routine for oily skin just takes a little know-how, so we reached out to board-certified dermatologists Dr Corey L. Hartman and Dr David Kim to find out what makes a great oily-skin routine.

What causes oily skin?

“Oily skin is genetic, and it has to do with the size and activity of the oil glands that are associated with the hair follicles,” Dr Hartman explains. “That means if you have thicker hair, you may have thicker or larger oil glands.”

Another thing that can impact the amount of oil your skin produces? Hormones. That’s why acne, which is so often associated with oily skin, commonly shows up during puberty, and for those who menstruate, around their periods.

Now that you know what triggers oiliness, it’s time to put together your ideal skin-care routine for oily skin – and it’s simpler than it sounds. As Dr Kim notes, when it comes to oily skin types, less is more. “It’s best not to add too many layers for oily skin,” he says. “Otherwise, it can clog your pores and cause acne flares.”

If you’re ready to get glowing (but not shiny!) skin, follow the regimen below. Trust us: skin care for oily skin has never been easier.

Skin-care routine for oily skin

The heart of a good skin-care routine for oily skin has four main daily steps:

Cleanser

Toner

Moisturiser

Sunscreen

There are additional steps you can add in if necessary or as needed:

Exfoliator

Acne treatment

If hitting all those steps sounds intimidating, don’t worry. We have everything you need to know, including product recommendations.

1. Cleanser

Every good skin-care routine – including one for oily skin – begins with a good cleanser. You want to use it twice a day: once in the morning to prep your skin to apply your products, and again at night to take off any debris you’ve collected throughout the day.

You might’ve heard that you can skip a morning cleansing, but rinsing without washing is better suited to a skin-care routine for dry skin. If yours is oily, go ahead and use a cleanser in the morning and at night.

Dr Hartman says that for oily skin, the best face wash is likely “something a little astringent” that uses hydroxy acids or benzoyl peroxide. “You don’t want to do so much that it pushes you in the direction of overly drying,” he explains. That can lead your skin to produce more oil, a process called rebound oiliness.

As for the best face wash formulations, Dr Hartman recommends staying away from oils, which can sometimes be comedogenic. (In other words, they can clog your pores.) Instead, look for gel, foam or cream cleansers.

2. Toner

Toner is technically an optional skin-care step, but many dermatologists recommend it for oily skin because it can help regulate sebum. These watery formulas are meant to eliminate any leftover makeup and grime left after cleansing, while treating the skin with helpful ingredients.

What’s the best way to use them? “Once or twice a day on a cotton pad,” says Dr Kim. “Apply to [your] full face.”

The best toner for you depends on your goals: Are you aiming for better skin texture? Regulated oil production? A combination of both? According to Dr Kim, if you have oily skin, look for gentle exfoliating acids, such as glycolic or lactic acid, to gently resurface the skin. Or go with salicylic acid to help with sebum control.

You’ll know you’ve found the right one when your skin feels soft and smooth after use, not tight or dry. Luckily, unlike the harsh toners of the past, today’s formulas are much gentler and more foolproof.

3. Moisturiser

Yes, oily skin needs moisturiser. It may sound counterintuitive, but keeping your skin moisturised means it won’t have to work as hard to keep hydration levels up! In fact, Dr Hartman says it’s one of the keys to holding off rebound oiliness. You want to use it morning and night, after cleansing.

When looking for the best moisturiser for oily skin, the formula is everything. “I like things that are less creamy and more like a serum or gel base,” says Dr Hartman. “You want something light, nothing too heavy, nothing too emollient,” he explains. In other words, look for terms like daily or sheer, and skip thicker formulas – night creams and bottles marked intense may be too heavy for oily skin. One thing to stay away from: oils, as they can be comedogenic, meaning they may clog pores.

4. Sunscreen

Sun damage impacts every skin type, including oily skin, so having SPF in your morning routine is non-negotiable. And, yes, that means you need to use it year-round, even on cloudy days and in the winter. (And don’t forget the scalp sunscreen!)

Admittedly, sunscreen can make your skin look a little oily, so finding a nongreasy sunscreen is essential (more on that in a second). But Dr Kim reassures us that’s not impossible. “If you’re using good skin care that helps exfoliate and regulate sebum production, you should be able to wear sunscreen without feeling too greasy,” he says.

When it comes to the best face sunscreens for oily types, lightweight daily formulas win. Just be sure yours has an SPF of 30 or higher.

Whether you reach for a mineral or chemical sunscreen is a matter of personal preference, and it often comes down to how they wear on your skin (mineral sunscreens can sometimes leave a white cast). “The goal is to find your favourite sunscreen – chemical or mineral – and actually use it every day,” says Dr Kim.

Powder sunscreens are a good option for touching up oily skin – they allow you to reapply SPF on the go while soaking up oil. Sunscreen oils, on the other hand, are best avoided. “These can clog the pores,” he says.

Exfoliant

Exfoliators help remove the dead skin cells that can mix with sebum and clog pores, which is why exfoliating can be an important step in your routine.

There are two categories of exfoliants: chemical (like glycolic and salicylic acid or retinols, which increases cell turnover) and physical (scrubs that use friction). Dr Hartman recommends starting with chemical exfoliators, as “they’re a more controlled way of exfoliation,” he says.

Apply an exfoliator once or twice a week – or more if your skin can handle it – either in the morning or at night. You may need to start slow, only using it more often if you don’t experience irritation. Beyond that, exfoliate only for very special events, when you really want a glow. That way, you won’t trigger irritation.

Dr Hartman’s go-to products for oily skin are prescription retinoids or over-the-counter retinols – not surprising, as these vitamin A derivatives are darlings of the dermatology world. But retinoids are harsh chemicals. “For retinol, start using a pea-size [amount] only twice weekly, and let your skin develop tolerance,” says Dr Kim. You’ll want to apply retinol at night and be extra careful about wearing sunscreen during the day.

For people who don’t tolerate them well, Dr Hartman says an alpha hydroxy acid (like glycolic acid) or beta hydroxy acid (like salicylic acid) is a great alternative. If you prefer a physical facial scrub, remember: the finer the particles, the better.

Acne treatment

First, forget about spot-treating blemishes – if you’re dealing with acne, Dr Kim insists it’s best to treat your whole face. That way, you prevent breakouts before they have a chance to form. And if you’re struggling with breakouts, he says, “you should use at least one prescription cream on your full face to treat existing pimples and prevent new ones.”

Heads up: retinoids don’t just aid exfoliation; they can treat acne too. If you’re using a retinoid for acne control and have sensitive skin, you may want to consider this your combo acne and exfoliating treatment. It covers both needs, and including an additional exfoliant in your skin-care routine may cause irritation, especially if your skin is sensitive.

If acne is something you grapple with more than occasionally, see your dermatologist for a prescription cream – your doctor will pick the formula that’s best for your skin. If it’s a retinoid, you’ll use this at night.

But if you only experience the occasional pimple and would rather go for an over-the-counter option, you’ve got some choices. First things first: you’re going to want a cream rather than a medicated face wash. Sure, face washes offer some acne-fighting ingredients, but you wash them away almost immediately. “Acne wash stays on your face for five seconds, so you need something that will stay on your skin the whole day or night,” Dr Kim explains.

While you may see a few other ingredients (like azelaic acid) pop up in the acne world, when it comes to OTC options, there are two all-star ingredients: salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide. Both are effective, but of the two, benzoyl peroxide tends to get a little more love – it’s especially effective when combined with antibiotics (under a doctor’s care), according to the Mayo Clinic.

Just be aware that it can bleach fabrics, so make sure to let it really soak in before getting dressed. And, again, make sure to apply it to your whole face, not just one pimple. Remember, your goal is to avoid pimples in the first place.

Skin-care tips experts swear by

Armed with our dermatologist-approved skin-care routine for oily skin, you’re well on your way to a less-greasy face. But there are a couple more things to consider as you follow this regimen.

Skin care and exercise

You know you need to wash your face in the morning and at night. But what if you’re feeling particularly grimy midday? If you work out in the middle of the day, for instance, should you wash your face if you have oily skin? “You probably don’t need to do that,” says Dr Hartman. “Twice a day is enough.”

Adding an additional cleansing session may dry your skin out, causing more oiliness. You do want to rinse your face, however. That’ll prevent the sweat, debris and oil from mixing and clogging your pores. And it has the added bonus of leaving you refreshed after a gruelling workout.

Smart product use

Take your time when introducing ingredients. Before slathering a new product all over your face, do a spot test to make sure your skin can handle it. And when dealing with ingredients like benzoyl peroxide and retinoids, which some people find irritating, start slow to acclimate your face, building to more frequent use as your skin adjusts to the ingredient.

This article originally appeared on Reader's Digest.

Your skin cells don't have time to repair themselves

“The evening is a time of rest and repair, when the skin heals itself from daily damage,” says dermatologist Dr Joshua Zeichner. “If you are not sleeping, then your skin will not be able to heal itself and may increase your likelihood of premature ageing.”

Breakouts can - and probably will - pop up

Your levels of cortisol (the stress hormone) naturally drop at night. But when you stay up late and disrupt your sleep cycle, cortisol levels remain high. This means your oil glands are continually stimulated, which can make you more likely to get an acne breakout, explains Dr Zeichner.

Your pores will look bigger

Another side effect of increased oil production brought on by lack of sleep is clogged and dilated pores.

Your risk of sun damage increases

“Normal sleep is needed for production of your body’s natural antioxidant stores,” says Dr Zeichner. “It has been shown that sleep deprivation results in a decrease in antioxidant production, which interferes with your skin’s ability to protect itself from environmental stressors the next day, including UV light, pollution, and exposure to cigarette smoke.”

Your risk of skin infection goes up

“Sleep deprivation has been shown to affect your immune system, lowering your white blood cells,” Dr Zeichner says, “so a lack of sleep may increase your risk of skin infections.” A few of these infections can include the fungal variety (athlete’s foot and ring worm) as well as cellulitis and folliculitis (a big word for an ingrown hair).

Your under-eye bags get deeper and darker

Your lymph system is like your waste disposal system, helping to filter excess fluid and toxins and, according to Dr Zeichner, there is some data that suggests a lack of sleep does interfere with your lymphatic drainage. “If the fluid is not drained away, it may accumulate, leading to puffiness and increase your under-eye bags.” Also, keep your diet low in sodium, to prevent fluid accumulation.

Sallow complexion much?

“Lack of sleep interferes with the normal circadian patterns in your skin, including night time skin repair,” tells Zeichner. “This may interfere with normal skin cell turnover, leading to the accumulation of cells on the skin’s surface and a dull complexion.” That means your skin may look dull or grey. A good exfoliation treatment will help brighten your skin right up.

Your psoriasis and eczema may flare up

Stress is a common trigger for chronic skin conditions including psoriasis and eczema. When you don’t get enough sleep the chances are good that your stress levels will go up, along with your production of cortisol. An early study has shown a connection between sleep and psoriasis and other studies have shown that lack of sleep damages your skin barrier, making an eczema flare-up more likely.

This article originally appeared on Reader's Digest.

The best anti-ageing secrets dermatologists won’t tell you for free

The best tips from top dermatologists

A wide array of over-the-counter anti-ageing skincare products aim to improve the signs of ageing, such as skin spots, fine lines, wrinkles, and boost collagen. Yet, most of these products are more hype – it’s important for consumers to understand when a product is a cosmetic, drug, or both to evaluate the validity of these claims. So, which products can actually deliver results that improve the signs of ageing?

We spoke with medical experts who told us the best anti-ageing secrets for better skin health.

Opt for sunscreen to fight ageing skin

Sunscreen is one of the best weapons when it comes to protecting your skin against skin cancer, and it’s also one of the best ways to keep your skin looking younger and healthier. “The sun emits ultraviolet radiation that damages skin, both the overlying epidermis and the underlying dermis,” explains dermatologist, Dr Jerome Garden. “In addition to increasing your risk of skin cancer, the sun causes brown spots, red spots, and wrinkles.”

Expensive products are not always more effective

It may be tempting to splurge on a skin-care item that promises to yield worthy results, but pricey doesn’t always equal quality. There are some great inexpensive products that can produce great results, according to dermatologist, Dr Dendy Engelman. “A higher price tag can mean better quality ingredients or a higher concentration of an ingredient, but the ingredients list is always more important than the brand selling the product,” she says.

Don't buy generic skincare

You don’t need to spend a fortune to get a high-quality skincare product, but there is a difference between a brand name product and a generic one, according to dermatologist, Dr Joshua Zeichner.

“Many generic products are packaged to look similar to the original, and may even have the same ingredients list, however, the difference is the quality of the ingredients and how they are actually formulated,” he says.

Skimp on a fancy cleanser

No matter what an expensive cleanser may cost, it’s not going to work any more magic than most lower-cost competitors, according to dermatologists. “The goal of a cleanser is to remove dirt, oil, makeup and pollution from the skin without disrupting the outer skin layer – and the ingredients used to create a product that can do this are not expensive,” says Dr Zeichner. “In fact, some of the best quality cleansers are actually among the least expensive products on the market.”

Opt for a serum

Serums, which are meant to be layered underneath your daily and nightly moisturiser, often are the first skincare products to be skipped. But, they actually play an important role in your daily routine. “Serums contain a high concentration of active ingredients and are lightweight, so they penetrate deeper into your skin to provide maximum benefits,” says dermatologist, Dr Whitney Bowe.

She recommends looking for serums that contain ceramides and amino acids, which help to bolster the skin’s natural barrier, and antioxidants, which protect skin from sun damage and free radicals.

Don't trust anti-wrinkle face cream claims

“We develop fine lines because of repeated folding of the skin from underlying muscles,” explains Dr Zeichner. “Young, healthy skin has a strong foundation that resists folding and bounces back to its original shape, but, with age, that skin foundation gets weaker.”

While topical creams will certainly help keep the skin barrier strong, the only way to truly reduce wrinkles is to relax the muscles underneath the skin, according to Dr Zeichner.

Wear sunscreen year-round

It’s true that even on the cloudiest or snowiest of days, sunscreen should be a part of your daily skincare routine. “Incidental sun exposure for only 10 to 15 minutes a day adds up over time and can cause significant sun damage and accelerated photoaging,” says Dr Engelman.

In order to keep skin looking its youngest and healthiest, she recommends applying sunscreen every single day of the year, as brief sun exposures throughout the year can add up to significant damage (think driving with the sunroof open or walking around outdoor shopping centres during peak sun hours).

Use retinol - it really works

According to dermatologist, Dr Hadley King, topical retinoids are the most effective topical anti-ageing products (after sun protection). “There is great data that supports their effectiveness and safety,” she says. “While prescription retinoids are the most effective, there are now plenty of over-the-counter products that contain retinol and work well, especially on those with sensitive skin.”

Invest in laser treatments

If you’re looking for fast results without the use of creams, Dr Garden recommends laser treatments, which he specialises in. “We have lasers for brown spots, red spots, blood vessels and wrinkles,” he says. “Newer devices called fractionated lasers can produce impressive results with less downtime than before.” Although they’re on the pricier side, he says that these treatments can offer results far superior to creams.

But the only caveat is that these machines are powerful and, in many states, can be operated by unqualified individuals who are not even physicians. He recommends making sure that your laser treatments are being performed by a board-certified dermatologist to avoid complications.

Try collagen supplements

Collagen is a protein that’s a building block for our hair, skin and nails. “Supplemental collagen is fragmented pieces of amino acids and peptides that connect in the bloodstream with enzymes that trigger the production of collagen,” explains Dr Engelman. “In a collagen-deficient system, this will support and increase collagen production.” It’s important, however, that you choose the right type of collagen, since 16 different strains exist.

“For oral supplements, hydrolysed collagen is easiest to digest, as it is broken down into the smallest forms of peptides and amino acids,” she says. “I like pills and powders because they are easy to incorporate no matter what your lifestyle.”

Don't fall for 'trendy' products

The latest and greatest products on the market might be eye-catching, but their popularity doesn’t mean that they’re effective. “Just because something is ‘hot’ right now in the beauty industry, does not mean that you should run out to purchase it,” says Dr Bowe. “I always encourage my patients to look for scientific studies and statistics which prove that products deliver the results they promise.”

Follow a healthy diet

No matter how much time, energy and money you spend on your skincare regimen, if you’re not supplementing it with a healthy diet, you’re wasting your efforts, according to experts. “Your skin is a reflection of your overall health and wellness and your diet absolutely impacts the appearance and health of your skin,” says Dr Bowe.

“For example, sugar in any form causes multiple changes in our body, from our cellular membranes and our arteries to our hormones, immune systems, gut, and even microbiome – the microbes in our intestines that affect our biology all the way out to our skin.”

Allergy pill and a nap may reduce dark circles and puffy eyes

There are other causes of dark circles that are unrelated to your skin, such as seasonal allergies or lack of sleep. Dermatologist, Dr Joel Schlessinger recommends trying Clarityne or Zyrtec, drinking more water, or heading to bed an hour earlier to clock in more sleep. If your dark circles and puffiness aren’t improved by any of those suggestions, then he says a well-formulated and hydrating eye cream could help.

Avoid sleeping on your side

Believe it or not, the way you sleep does have an effect on the smoothness of your skin. “Sleeping on your side presses your cheek into the pillow and causes the skin on your chest to be scrunched, creating new or reinforcing existing wrinkles,” warns Dr Schlessinger. “Train yourself to sleep on your back as much as you can – it will keep skin as flat and smooth as possible.”

Don't wait until it's too late too start Botox

Some fine lines and wrinkles are caused by repetitive movements, so starting these treatments early, even in your late 20s and early 30s, may potentially help prevent them or slow their progression, according to cosmetic dermatologist, Dr Sejal Shah.

“People are often afraid of injectables because they don’t want to look ‘frozen’ or overdone, but many neurotoxins (Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, and Jeuveau) can look very natural when appropriately placed.” Just be sure to seek treatment from trained individuals, such as a board-certified dermatologist.

This article originally appeared on Reader's Digest.

Some skincare rules were made to be broken

Beauty influencer Natalie O’Neill has gained quite the following on TikTok with her honest beauty advice, and has now shared her three least favourite - and most overrated - pieces of skincare advice.

As anyone with sensitive skin knows, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution, though it doesn’t stop us from trying every new hack and ‘groundbreaking’ product to hit the market.

But according to Natalie, that in itself can be causing half the trouble. Her answer? Focus on the basics - cleansing, toning, and moisturising - and stop following these three popular but probably doomed-to-failed ‘rules’.

Exfoliating

“The first one is exfoliation,” she said. “Ask any dermatologist, they will tell you you don’t need to exfoliate every day. Skin care brands have exfoliating products that they want to sell to you, and you will use them up quicker if you exfoliate every day.

“The only thing is, your skin doesn’t need to be exfoliated every day. And if you do that you probably will have worse skin. We are conditioned to feel like skin needs exfoliation, but it actually exfoliates itself. It has its own natural turnover, it doesn’t need you to interact with it all the time.”

Natalie suggested instead just protecting skin, keeping it hydrated, and exfoliating maybe once every one to two weeks at most.

Vitamin C

“In at number two is vitamin C,” Natalie continued. “I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, several dermatologists that I follow don’t use vitamin C. It’s not that necessary, and it can actually be one of the most irritating ‘actives’ available.”

After going on to list some popular online dermatologists that she knows don’t consider it important either, Natalie said that “again, it’s the brands telling you that you need to use it every day. And actually, you don’t.

“And you might find that if you stop using it you would have much calmer skin. That’s what I found.”

Skin cycling

Skin cycling is a skincare routine that calls for ‘rest days’, where the skin is given time to ‘repair’ itself after using products. Supposedly, this has the added benefit of preventing the likes of irritation and inflammation.

“I know that the person who invented it is on this app [TikTok], I know that, I respect her,” Natalie began for her third take. “In a way, skin cycling has helped lots of people, and that’s a good thing.

“But let me ask you this - if those people weren’t using chemical exfoliants and retinoids prior to doing skin cycling, it would therefore make sense that they are now experiencing good results after using chemical exfoliants and retinoids.

“On one hand I do understand why people do skin cycling, because it makes a complicated subject a lot easier to absorb and implement in your daily life. But on the other hand, it’s not really anything new.”

Her answer? “Use your retinoid or your chemical exfoliant more consistently” to see better results.

Images: TikTok

Common retinol myth debunked by experts

Soaking up some Vitamin D (while protecting your skin with an SPF, of course) can often bring upon a change in our daily skincare routine.

As our skincare shelves undergo their spring clean, one thing will become clear: many of us will have fallen prey to a common misconception about a widely loved skincare ingredient - Retinol.

The myth? You can't use Retinol in summer or when in the sun.

While this is false, there are a few facts to keep in mind when stepping out into the sunshine.

Retinol does make our skin more sensitive to the sun, and thus more susceptible to sun damage.

But that doesn't mean we have to move it to the back of our shelf for the next 6 months, as No7 Beauty Company's Head of Science Research, Dr Mike Bell, explains.

“Generally, retinol should only be used at night time and followed by a night time moisturiser and an SPF day cream in the morning, even if it is a retinol-free night.”

He then goes on to explain how we can carefully choose skincare ingredients to help us in using retinol in summer.

“Excellent complementary ingredients can either work alongside retinol in enhancing the rejuvenating benefits, or by supporting skin's tolerance to retinol in the form of calming ingredients, or barrier strengthening ingredients.”

Some of the key ingredients Dr. Mike Bell references include Vitamin C, Bisabol, Niacinamide and Ceramides.

He also explains that when using retinol, at any time of the year, you should avoid using physical and chemical exfoliants.

No7 has developed a top-tier range of Retinol products to help you continue on your Retinol journey in summer, to keep your skin looking youthful and rejuvenated.

The No7 Pure Retinol 0.3% Night Concentrate is a perfect everyday product for the warmer months, while No7 1% Pure Retinol Night Concentrate is a stronger working retinol product, best for restoring radiance of retinol-using pros.

Lastly, the No7 Pure Retinol Post Retinol Soother is a game-changing necessity for summer months, containing Niacinamide, Bisabolol and Ceramides to leave your skin feeling nourished and calm.

The entire No7 range is available exclusively at Priceline.

What happens to our skin as we age?

The main factors that contribute to how old we look include the shape of our face, the number of lines or wrinkles, and the luminosity of our skin. Each of these is influenced by intrinsic and external factors.

Skin is the most visible organ. So ageing skin has a big impact on a person’s self-esteem. Aussies spend nearly A$5 billion per year on skin care products and treatments, with Queenslanders spending the most on beauty per capita.

Intrinsic ageing of the skin

Rates of intrinsic (also known as chronologic) ageing are predicted, to a degree, by our genetic makeup, including our skin colour.

With age, the epidermis (the top layer of the skin) becomes thinner and more transparent. This means that it reflects less light and so appears less luminous as time goes on.

The epidermis may also start to develop growths, including small brown dots (dermatosis papulosa nigra and seborrhoic keratoses) and overgrown oil glands, as well as spots that result from ultra-violet (UV) light exposure such as lentigines (freckles), melasma (pigmentation), solar keratoses (sun spots) and skin cancers.

Our dermis (the layer of skin under the epidermis) loses collagen and elastin as we age, causing the skin to sag and develop wrinkles when our muscles move under the skin. The blood vessels in the dermis also become thinner, which leads to easy bruising. And because the dermis and epidermis are thinner and hence closer together as we age, the blood vessels become more visible on the surface of the skin with time.

The reason collagen decreases as we age is complex, but is partly due to the reduced function of the cells that make collagen (fibroblasts) and an increase in the enzyme that breaks down collagen.

Research has also shown that fat is lost and bone is resorbed from different compartments of the face at different rates, and this affects our perceived age.

When fat disappears from under the eyes (usually in our 20s or 30s), a dark shadow appears, making us look tired. And as the fat pad around the cheeks moves downwards (in our 30s and 40s), lines are created that extend outwards from the nose.

Decreases in collagen and elastin cause frown lines and crows feet to develop, alongside other dynamic wrinkles (wrinkles from muscle movement). Meanwhile, the edge of the brow begins to drop and the lips start to thin out.

As we move into our 50s, collagen and elastin levels fall further, causing our wrinkles to deepen, and resorption of bone occurs around the eyes causing “bags” to form. Fat hanging from now less-elastic skin causes our eyebrows and nasal tips to droop and the skin on our neck to sag.

But intrinsic factors aren’t the whole story. Our lifestyle, environment and habits also play a role in skin ageing.

Extrinsic ageing of the skin

Extrinsic ageing can be induced by environmental factors such as UV exposure, smoking and air pollution. This means the skin’s apparent age and its chronological age are not always the same.

UV light breaks down elastin in the dermis, causing saggy, stretchy skin. The skin also bruises and tears more easily and takes longer to heal with ongoing exposure to UV rays.

Tobacco smoke results in insufficient oxygen supply to the skin and blocked blood vessels. It reduces immunity (meaning skin cancers can develop more easily) and increases the level of an enzyme that breaks down collagen. Reduced collagen results in wrinkles and loss of volume. Smoking also increases dryness, coarseness and a dull appearance of the skin, and increases wrinkles around the mouth.

Recent research also suggests a positive correlation between air pollution and extrinsic skin ageing, with 20% more pigment spots noted on the forehead and cheeks of those with exposure to more soot and particles from traffic.

Differences in ageing

So why is it that people of different ethnicities and skin colours seem to age differently? Different types of skin have different amounts of elastin, collagen, pigment cells (melanocytes), and fats.

Darker skin has larger, more numerous melanosomes, which manufacture, store and transport melanin, in turn giving the skin pigment. This provides protection against UV rays in people with darker skin types.

The average protective factor against UV-B radiation in black skin was found to be 13.4 – compared with 3.4 for white skin, while the average rate of UV-B transmission into the dermis was 5.7% in black skin, compared with 29.4% in white skin.

While increased melanin serves as an inbuilt sunscreen, it’s also the responses of these pigment cells that make patients with skin of colour more susceptible to pigment problems over time.

And those with darker skin types are said to have a thickened outer layer of the skin with larger and more numerous fibroblasts (cells that make connective tissue and collagen) and compact collagen. This means this type of skin won’t wrinkle as easily, but has a greater chance of keloid scarring (overgrowth of scar tissue).

So it seems that not all skin is created equal, but there are things we can do to optimise our skin health. Sun protection (hat, sunscreen, seeking shade) and avoiding smoking are good places to start. Retinoids have been proven to help minimise fine lines, pigmentation and to increase collagen and repair sun-damaged skin.

As for the myriad lotions and potions that claim to magically make us look 21 again … if I find one that works I’ll let you know.

This article originally appeared on cosmosmagazine.com and was written by The Conversation.

“Less is more”: Skin doctor shares her holy grail skincare routine

A skin and cosmetic doctor has shared her holy grail skincare routine that focuses on a “less is more” approach for more mature skin.

Dr Imaan Joshi, 49, only began her foray into the complicated world of skincare when she was 42, and now had refined her routine to work in her favour.

Dr Joshi only cleanses once each day, uses a handful of serums in the morning and puts on hyaluronic acid and retinol before bed.

Chatting with Femail, she admitted she prefers the “wash and wear” approach to achieving healthy skin.

“You don’t need 10 steps or whatever to get the job done if you use targeted personalised stuff for you and stop following fads and trends,” she said.

“Most of my patients are busy with hectic lifestyles. Keeping it simple means they’re more likely to stick to their routines rather than skip it completely because it’s too hard.”

She also says looking after your skin isn't about “looking younger”, but rather about looking healthier.

“I think my skin looks better but the goal is never to look younger. I’m not trying to pass as younger, that’s an unintended consequence if it happens, not the goal,” she said.

As well as her five minute a day routine in the mornings and evenings, Dr Joshi also likes to do monthly laser and chemical peels, and an 'anti-wrinkle' treatment every three or four months.

She also likes to do micro needling or have a deep hydration done twice each year.

While she admits these treatments, creams and clinic visits can “all add up”, she says it's important to invest in your skincare the same way you would your physical health.

13 tricks to make your makeup last all day, according to pros

Start with a good base

Prepping your skin before you apply makeup is key, says makeup artist Lucy Halperin. Start by washing your face so it’s sparkling clean, then apply a quick face mask – Halperin loves REN Flash Rinse 1 Minute Facial, which does its job in a mere 60 seconds – before applying moisturiser. “The skin is plump, it’s moisturised, and it’s even-toned,” she says. “I end up putting on less foundation on than I would.”

Prime your face

Even if you’re using a product with built-in primer like BB cream or tinted moisturiser, starting with a primer will even out the texture of your skin and keep your makeup in place, says Jessica Mae, founder, creative director and makeup artist of WarPaint International Beauty Agency. “Putting primer down first gives an additional layer of something to hold on to,” she says. Pick one to match your skin type: a smoothing one for large pores or fine lines, a mattifying one for oily faces, or a hydrating one for dry skin.

Apply with a brush

No matter how tempted you are to ignore your brushes and apply foundation with your fingers, this has to be a hands-off process if you want your look to stay. Otherwise the oil from your fingers could transfer to your face, and you’ll use more product than you need, Mae says. “Brushes apply the product evenly, which is the key to longevity of it,” she says. “You aren’t having a thicker layer on one side vs thinner on the other. You’ll have consistency with how the natural oils of your face mix with the product.”

Apply in layers

Use a light hand to apply powder blushes and bronzers. “Sweep it lightly and layer it on,” Halperin says. “Really blend it in.” Smudging away any harsh lines will make it less obvious if your makeup does start to melt away, she says.

Prep your eyes

An eye cream will help get rid of dark circles and leave you ready for concealer. Halperin suggests Clinique Even Better Eyes, which has a metal applicator that cools the skin while you apply it. “It really smooths out the skin,” she says. But only apply under your eye – if you put it on your eyelids, the moisture will cause your eyeshadow to slip into your creases, Mae says.

Pick the right eye primer

You may have heard concealer is a good substitute for eye primer, but Mae says she’s found that isn’t the case. “Concealer is usually creamy in consistency, which is more emollient,” she says. “If you’re using it on the eyelid, it can cause creasing and cause eye shadow to not blend as well.” She says the best results come from a product specifically designed to prime eyes.

Choose waterproof eyeliner

For a long-lasting liner, opt for a waterproof formula, or use a regular one and go over it with a powder of the same colour to set it, Halperin says. If your eyes start to get moist, put a bit of powder underneath to keep a runny mess from forming, she recommends.

Or skip the eyeliner

If you’re notorious for runny eyeliner, sometimes the best strategy is to stop working against nature. “If someone’s eye is waterlogged, just skip it,” Halperin says. “Just use waterproof mascara to accentuate the lashes.”

Find the right mascara

Mascaras tend to be personal, and finding the right formula for you will help you get a lasting wear. People with watery eyes should opt for waterproof, but other than that, it’s trial and error, Mae says. “Get samples sizes from your favourite makeup counter and try a few to find the perfect one that works for you,” she says. To avoid ruining your makeup before you’re even done applying, avoid getting mascara transfer on your eyelids. Mae recommends starting with bottom lashes and let them dry before adding product to the top.

Use lip liner as a base

A lot of lipsticks marketed as long-lasting can be drying, Halperin says. Start by filling in your lips with lip liner before applying your lipstick, which will give a waxiness that the lipstick can grip on. “It gives it a longevity because the lips have already been based with that colour,” Halperin says.

Lock in your lip colour

After applying lipstick, Mae suggests laying a tissue on your lips, then lightly dusting translucent powder over the tissue to seal in the colour. “It acts as a setting powder for lipstick,” she says.

Set your makeup

Once you’ve finished your look, use a setting spray to lock it in place. Mae likes to use setting spray after applying foundation, then applying powder after it’s dried, finishing the rest of her makeup, and adding with one more layer of setting spray. “As you layer the products, it lasts longer,” she says. “It creates a barrier between the natural skin and the product.” Between skin cream and a moisturising primer, you’ll already have plenty of hydration, so choose a setting spray that doesn’t moisturise – any more could cause your makeup to slip, Mae says.

Keep your hands off

Don’t let the rest of your day ruin the hard work you put in to your makeup. “Avoiding touching your facing as much as you can will help keep makeup on longer,” Mae says. That means to stop resting your hand on your face and holding your phone against your cheek. If you’re acne-prone, try cleaning bacteria off your work phone and cell phone regularly to prevent breakouts, Mae says.

This article originally appeared on Reader's Digest.

16 easy ways to look younger

Wear the right glasses

According to a survey conducted by Jacksonville University researchers, wearing glasses in general increases how old people think you are. For those who need to wear them, investing in a nice pair that frame your face could take years off your look. Cat’s eye frames are especially known to make people look younger by lifting the face, while aviators negatively focus attention downward.

Swap out your orthopaedic shoes

Sacrificing style for comfort by wearing orthopaedics is an easy way to look older, but you can have both, by choosing a pair of stylish, on-trend but oh-so-comfy trainers.

Wear the right bra

An appropriately fitted bra is essential, no matter your age. Finding the right fit not only provides comfort, but also has a slimming effect, according to Best Health. An ill-fitting bra with straps that dig into the skin or too-tight cups that cause flesh to bubble up can make you look as though you’re wearing old, outdated, or super-worn garments.

Work on your posture

Not only can poor posture lead to headaches, neck pain, and breathing problems but it can also make you look older, the Mayo Clinic reports. Slouching in your chair or hunching over your computer are just two ways you might already be practising bad posture. Sitting up straight and checking your posture throughout the day are two easy ways to look younger and more confident.

Exercise more

Exercising more can contribute to things that help you look younger, such as your mood and sleep (more on that later). Working out actually slows down ageing on a cellular level. According to a study published in the journal Preventative Medicine, people who do regular, vigorous exercise have longer telomeres – shorter ones are related to various age-related diseases. Looks-wise, exercising keeps skin younger, and it may also reverse some skin ageing in people who are new to regular exercise, the New York Times reports. But if you’re exercising outdoors, be sure to use sunscreen.

Get enough sleep

Beauty sleep isn’t just a buzzy phrase; Cosmopolitan reports that getting too-little sleep leads to a dry complexion, breakouts, redness, and dreaded dark circles – all of which add years to your looks. Surgeon, Dr Chester Griffiths also advises having a set sleep schedule. “Regulate sleep patterns and prepare for bed with a 15-minute pre-sleep routine to close the day,” Dr Griffiths says. He also advises removing electronics from the bedroom to make sure they don’t interfere with your sleep quality.

Sleep on your back

Yes, getting enough shut-eye is important, but how you’re sleeping is just as key. Sleeping on your side or your stomach promotes skin damage, wrinkles, and sometimes results in indentations in the skin that mimic wrinkles. Sleeping on your back promotes less face swelling, fewer fine lines, and helps your body relax, enhancing the cell turnover that gets rid of dead skin cells, according to Dermstore.

Stay hydrated

Dehydration makes you look older by drying your skin, thus making you look tired. Carry a reusable water bottle so you can always stay hydrated. The daily general recommended amount of water for women is eight cups of total water, from all beverages according to the Australian Government Department of Health. For men, the average is 10 cups per day.

Moisturise your skin

As people age, skin becomes thinner and loses the ability to retain moisture. That’s why adding a moisturiser to your routine is so important, much as hydrating by drinking water is good for your body. According to the University of Maryland Medical Centre, moisturisers help prevent tearing and bruising, and they temporarily stretch the skin, reducing the look of wrinkles for a short time.

Wear sunscreen

It’s never too late to protect your skin with sunscreen, according to cosmetic and reconstructive surgeon, Dr Eugene Elliot. “You can’t change what you were dealt with genetically, but you can take control of other factors which help you stay younger looking,” Dr Elliot says. His favourite sunblocks are mechanical, contain zero zinc or titanium oxide, and block the UV damaging rays effectively with frequent application. Not only can wearing sunscreen prevent ageing, but a study sponsored by the Johnson & Johnson Skin Research Center found that people who applied a daily moisturiser with SPF 30 for a year saw significant improvements in hyperpigmentation, texture, and skin clarity. Make sure to cover any exposed skin, such as your neck, hands, and chest – not just your face!

Hone in on your nutrition

Although eating nutritious foods might seem like generic advice, a balanced diet is a mainstay in healthy living for a few reasons. Eating certain foods or vitamins, however, could be more beneficial than others when it comes to looking more youthful. A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, for example, found that people with a higher Vitamin C intake had fewer wrinkles and less dryness no matter their age. Spices such as cinnamon, chilli powder, and ginger are associated with better-looking skin thanks to an increase in collagen (essential for skin firmness and elasticity), reduction in age-related skin cell changes, and anti-inflammation that may help prevent age spots, per Healthline.

Drink less alcohol

Overindulging in alcohol negatively affects the body in a few ways, and even on a cellular level, some studies have found. Again, it comes down to dehydration. Alcohol dehydrates you, which makes your skin look dull and dry and depletes iron levels which could trigger hair loss, too, according to the BBC.

Whiten your teeth

As people age, tooth enamel fades and yellow dentin found underneath shows through, according to Medical News Today. This yellow hue is an obvious sign of ageing and is easily remedied with safe teeth whitening. Remedies such as whitening trays, white strips, whitening toothpaste, and even a DIY mix of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide could do the trick, per Healthline.

Change up your hair

If you’ve been sporting the same ‘do for years, it might be time for an update. The change could be as simple as switching up your part, or it could involve a serious cut, colour, and style alteration. Some styling mistakes to watch out for are ballerina buns, severe centre parts, and stiff locks that might age you, according to Prevention. Some better and quick options to bring your hair up to speed include side-swept bangs, honey highlights, and romantic waves.

Have more sex

Getting frisky at least once a week not only helps you live longer but, according to some research, can also make you look up to seven years younger. According to HuffPost, Dr David Weeks, a clinical psychologist, found in his research that people who looked younger than their age were having 50 per cent more sex than those who looked older. A satisfying, healthy sex life is a contributing factor that increases overall quality of life and is a good predictor of general wellbeing, too.

Focus on de-stressing

Stress has some pretty negative impacts on your health including a higher risk of depression, fatigue, anxiety, and even heart disease, according to The Jed Foundation. That’s part of the reason why Dr Griffiths recommends finding impactful and enjoyable ways to de-stress. This could include everything from meditation and breathing routines to focusing on relationships with friends and family. Stress not only puts people in a bad mood, but also makes you seem older thanks to its negative contributions to wrinkles, under eye circles, and even hair loss, Medical Daily reports. More research also shows that chronic stress leads to shorter telomeres, which age you, according to Harvard Medical School.

This article originally appeared on Reader's Digest.

10 natural face cleansers you can make yourself

Coconut oil face cleanser

Without stripping your skin of its natural oils, coconut oil can eliminate any shine that appears at the end of the day. Its unique combination of natural fats – including linoleic acid (which helps fight acne) and lauric acid (which is hydrating and antimicrobial) makes it useful in treating the skin, says Dr Joshua Zeichner. It’s an effective moisturiser, and it’s great for atopic dermatitis. But if you have acne-prone skin, steer clear of coconut oil unless you know that your face can tolerate it.

Try: gently massage a squirt of coconut oil onto your face for about 30 seconds, recommends Sherri at Overthrow Martha. Then apply a warm towel onto your face to open up your pores. Wait 15 to 30 seconds, then remove the oil by patting with a washcloth.

Apple cider vinegar face cleanser

Apple cider vinegar has a long history as a beauty ingredient. In fact, Cleopatra is said to have used it as a facial cleanser. A key ingredient is malic acid, which is similar to alpha-hydroxy acid and exfoliates the skin, says Dr Lian Mack. This in turn promotes cell turnover, restores the skin’s pH levels, clarifies the skin, and helps clear out and prevent clogged pores and acne. A word of caution: apple cider vinegar should always be diluted and never be applied directly to skin.

Try: to make a natural toner, mix one part apple cider vinegar with two parts water, and shake well, recommends Beth of Tasty Yummies. Apply to a clean face with a cotton ball or pad. Once your skin dries, apply your usual daily moisturiser.

Honey and lemon face cleanser

Honey and lemon team up to become a natural moisturiser and antiseptic, a perfect soothing and cleaning combination for a natural face cleanser. Honey is naturally antibacterial and full of antioxidants, which have been shown to prevent acne and slow down the skin’s ageing process, says dermatologist, Dr Sejal Shah. Honey also provides a complexion boost. “Lemon juice is often recommended in DIY skin care because it has vitamin C, which is a great antioxidant,” says Dr Shah. “It also has antimicrobial and astringent properties.”

Try: mix 1 tbsp of organic honey with the juice from half a lemon, advises Jessica Siefert of LiveGlam. Apply the mask, covering your face and neck but avoiding the area near your eyes. Wait 20 minutes, then wash off with warm water, followed by cold water. Pat dry.

Yoghurt face cleanser

Yoghurt is a perfect natural face cleanser, says Dr Judith Hellman, helping to rejuvenate and soften the skin. Protein and lactic acid in the yoghurt work together to help detoxify skin: Regularly applying lactic acid encourages your skin to get rid of the dead cells through exfoliation, and protein helps hydrate, tighten pores and reduce the appearance of fine lines.

Try: mix 2 tablespoons plain, full-fat Greek yoghurt with 1 to 2 teaspoons honey. (Optional add-ins: a squeeze of lemon or a few blueberries.) Apply to your face and let stand for about 10 to 15 minutes. Remove with a soft, damp washcloth.

Gently massage a thin layer of plain yogurt onto your clean face using your fingertips; this action will help loosen any dirt or makeup. Leave yoghurt on for 20 minutes, then wash off with warm water, suggests Stephanie Gerber of Hello Glow.

Olive oil face cleanser

This star ingredient can also feed your face! Olive oil is a great natural moisturiser to nourish and soften skin, says Dr Hellman, and its antioxidants and good fats may also help reduce free radicals to relieve irritated or sunburned skin.

Try: from the YouBeauty blog: Mix one egg yolk, 1 tablespoon of honey, 1 tablespoon of olive oil and a few drops of lemon juice. Apply to your clean face for 5 to 10 minutes, then rinse off.

Grape face cleanser

Research in the Journal of Clinical Aesthetic Dermatology found that phytonutrients in grapes can help shield skin cells from harmful UV radiation. Grapes also contain vitamin C, which is proven to help form collagen, the protein that improves skin elasticity and keeps you looking young.

Try: combine 1 egg white with 6 or 7 grapes in a blender, recommends Stephanie Gerber of Hello Glow. Blend thoroughly, crushing the seeds, which contain grapeseed oil. Once the mixture becomes frothy, use a facial brush to apply the mask to face and neck in upward strokes. Leave on for 15 minutes, then rinse thoroughly and follow up with moisturiser.

Dry yeast cleansing mask

When applied topically, yeast is hydrating, collagen-producing, anti-ageing and brightening, says dermatologist, Dr Julie Russak. It also protects the skin from environmental damage, strengthens its structure and helps repair damaged skin cells. Many expensive skin products contain yeast, but you can easily make a DIY facial mask at home.

Try: dissolve 1 tablespoon dry yeast in 2 tablespoons warm milk, then add 1 teaspoon honey, advises Eva at Ko-Te. Pat the mixture on your face, avoiding the eyes. Allow to sit for 10 to 15 minutes. Rinse with warm water, and pat the skin dry.

Natural face cleanser for breakouts

Putting oil on your face when you have acne may seem counterintuitive. But hear us out. Oils with a high percentage of linoleic acid, an omega-6 essential fatty acid, can help, says Dr Hellman. Linoleic acid is naturally present in your skin, but when you have acne, your skin has less of it than it needs. Among the oils that contain high amounts: hemp, safflower, rosehip and grapeseed.

Try: place a small amount of oil in your hand, and rub your hands together to warm the oil, suggests Donica Johns of nmbotanical. Apply gently all over your face. Massage firmly but gently, always moving upward, for two minutes, then let the oil sit on your face for 30 seconds. Place a washcloth soaked with warm water on your face. Leave on for about a minute.

Natural face cleanser for dry skin

Avocado oil, extracted from the pulp of the fruit, is an excellent source of enrichment for dry, damaged and chapped skin, according to a study in the International Journal of Molecular Science. Macadamia, almond and wheat germ oils are similarly rich in fatty acids and polyphenols, which nourish the skin and help fight ageing.

Try: follow the same instructions provided for the cleanser above: apply enough oil to cover your face with your fingertips using a circular motion, and hold a warm washcloth over your oil-covered face for a few minutes to open the pores. Then gently wash away using warm water.

Almond mayonnaise scrub

This combination may sound a bit strange, but it works well on very dry skin, according to the book Extraordinary Uses for Ordinary Things by the Reader’s Digest editors. The mayo will nourish your face, while the almonds will exfoliate.

Try: 1. Clean your face thoroughly with any natural face cleanser. Herbal Splash recommends grinding 1/4 cup (40 g) of whole, natural almonds in a blender or food processor. Mix in 1/8 teaspoon mayonnaise until it’s the consistency of a scrub. Set aside. 2. cCombine 1 teaspoon red wine or cider vinegar with 1/2 cup water. Rinse your face with this mixture. 3. Gently and thoroughly massage your face with the almond-mayo scrub. Leave it on for 10 minutes, then rinse with warm water and pat dry.

This article originally appeared on Reader's Digest.
