"Our extraordinary Queen": William's first statement as new Prince of Wales

Prince William has shared a statement following the death of Queen Elizabeth, reflecting on her special relationship with her great-grandchildren.

The heir apparent released the emotional statement two days after the death of the monarch, honouring the Queen's life both professionally and personally.

The king-to-be began the acknowledgement by saying "the world lost an extraordinary leader" with an "absolute" to commitment to the people she governed.

The new Prince of Wales focused on his familial loss, and how the royal family are dealing with their grief.

"On Thursday, the world lost an extraordinary leader, whose commitment to the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth was absolute. So much will be said in the days ahead about the meaning of her historic reign," the royal wrote.

"I, however, have lost a grandmother. And while I will grieve her loss, I also feel incredibly grateful. I have had the benefit of The Queen's wisdom and reassurance into my fifth decade."

The Duke of Cornwall went on to honour the role Her Majesty played in his wife Catherine's life, and the lives of his three children, Prince Louis, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

"My wife has had twenty years of her guidance and support. My three children have got to spend holidays with her and create memories that will last their whole lives."

The emotional tribute recalled how the Queen, or "Grannie" to William, remained a pillar for the duke throughout his key life experiences.

"She was by my side at my happiest moments. And she was by my side during the saddest days of my life. I knew this day would come, but it will be some time before the reality of life without Grannie will truly feel real."

The 40-year-old prince ended his statement with a final emotional display of gratitude for the longest-serving monarch.

"I thank her for the kindness she showed my family and me. And I thank her on behalf of my generation for providing an example of service and dignity in public life that was from a different age, but always relevant to us all.

"My grandmother famously said that grief was the price we pay for love. All of the sadness we will feel in the coming weeks will be testament to the love we felt for our extraordinary Queen.

"I will honour her memory by supporting my father, The King, in every way I can."

New evidence found as Madeleine McCann's parents release statement

The German prosecutor in charge of Madeleine McCann’s case has alluded to “new evidence” in relation to the young girl’s disappearance 15 years ago to the day.

Christian Brueckner has been officially declared the first formal suspect in the case - years after Madeleine’s parents were also considered suspects but were cleared in 2008.

In a televised interview, Prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters indicated there is new evidence linking Brueckner to Madeline’s murder but stopped short of revealing any more.

“We are sure that he is the murderer of Madeleine McCann. We are sure that he killed Madeleine McCann,” he said.

“The investigation is still going on and I think we found some new facts, some new evidence – not forensic evidence, but evidence.”

The potential incriminating evidence comes 15 years to the day that Madeleine disappeared on May 3, 2007, with her parents Kate and Gerry McCann releasing a statement.

“This year we mark 15 years since we last saw Madeleine. It feels no harder than any other but no easier either,” the statement read.

“It’s a very long time. Many people talk about the need for closure. It’s always felt a strange term.

“Regardless of outcome, Madeleine will always be our daughter and a truly horrific crime has been committed. These things will remain.”

Brueckner, 45, is currently serving seven years for raping a 72-year-old woman, and is being probed over the 2004 rape of a second woman and sexual assault of a 10-year-old girl at Praia da Luz a month before Madeleine disappeared

Image: Getty

Prince Charles makes rare statement on Ukraine conflict

In a stunning break from protocol, Prince Charles – a senior member of the royal family, which traditionally remains neutral on such matters – has made a rare statement concerning the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.

“Russia's invasion of Ukraine is an attack on freedom and democracy,” said Queen Elizabeth II’s eldest son and heir.

Prince Charles spoke out as he visited Southend-on-Sea, where in October last year local MP David Amess was stabbed to death as he met constituents at a weekly public meeting.

He described Amess' death as "an attack on democracy … on open society, on freedom itself".

"We are seeing those same values under attack today in Ukraine in the most unconscionable way," he said in a speech to mark Southend officially gaining city status.

"In the stand we take here, we are in solidarity with all those who are resisting brutal aggression."

Last weekend, Charles' eldest son Prince William and his wife Catherine sent a personal message of support to the people of Ukraine.

In a tweet, they recalled meeting Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky and his wife in October 2020, and hearing of their "hope and optimism" for the country.

"Today we stand with the President and all of Ukraine's people as they bravely fight for that future," they added.

*embed tweet

Prince Harry and Meghan sent their own message from the United States last week.

"We stand with the people of Ukraine," they wrote on the website of their charitable organisation Archewell, calling Russia's invasion a "breach of international and humanitarian law".

Image: Getty

“No right to be here”: Angry tennis stars pile on as Novak issues new statement

Novak Djokovic continues to face harsh criticism from commentators, fans, and fellow tennis players as more details about his behaviour in the lead-up to his arrival in Australia emerge.

The Serbian tennis star posted a statement on Instagram on Wednesday afternoon, in which he clarifies when he tested positive for COVID-19, and admits that he attended an in-person interview and photoshoot on December 18 while knowingly positive for the virus. He explained that he did this as he “didn’t want to let the journalist down”, but he made sure he “socially distanced and wore a mask” except for when his photo was being taken. He added that upon reflection, he realises this was an error of judgement.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Novak Djokovic (@djokernole)

He also explained that his travel declaration was submitted by his team on his behalf, and his agent has sincerely apologised for the administrative error in ticking the box about his previous travel before arriving in Australia that saw him detained last week.

Meanwhile, his fellow tennis players have voiced concerns about his actions, with former world number 1 Andy Murray suggesting there are “a few questions to be answered” and urging Djokovic to come clean. Murray had just won his first match in Australia in three years when he was asked about Djokovic, and he told reporters, “I mean, obviously, it‘s positive that he’s not in detention anymore. Obviously, he won in court, so that‘s a positive thing for him. Hopefully, (he) will be able to concentrate on the tennis now.

“There are still a few questions that need to be answered around the isolation and stuff, which I‘m sure we’ll hear from him in the next few days, but I’m obviously here to try and play and win tournaments.

“Like I said, it’s the first match that I have played here or won here in over three years, and this is where the situations like this are frustrating for players because I want to come off and talk about my tennis and what’s happening there, not talking about situations like that. So I‘m hoping that we can move on from it now.

“He won in court, which is good. Looks like he’s going to be able to play and compete in the Australian Open, which we do want the best players there, but like I said, I think there is still a few questions to be answered. Until that happens, tough to give a definitive opinion on everything. But like I said, positive that he‘s out and practising.”

Portuguese player Joao Sousa was critical of Djokovic’s attempt to skirt the rules. He told reporters, “I respect that he fights for what he believes and I can be empathetic with what he is going through in Australia, but it’s a bit selfish from him to arrive here as the only player unvaccinated. It’s tough for us players to accept that.

“Many players — not my case — didn’t want to get vaccinated and were forced to do it to be able to play tournaments. He is finding a way around those rules.”

Marton Fucsovics also criticised Djokovic, saying, “People’s health is paramount, and there are rules that were outlined months ago, namely that everyone should vaccinate themselves — and Djokovic didn’t. From this point of view, I don’t think he would have the right to be here.”

Image: Michael Dodge/Getty Images

Police release William Tyrrell search statement

Image: NSW Police

The search for William Tyrrell’s remains is set to end “in coming days”, according to police.

Officers and volunteers have spent several weeks scouring locations in and around the town of Kendall, on the NSW Mid-North Coast, where the boy was last seen in 2014.

The operation has been underway for four weeks and according to Detective Chief Superintendent Darren Bennett, the search was sparked by “new information”.

There have been over 1,000 people of interest during the case which has kept police puzzled for years. William was last seen playing out the front of his foster grandmother’s home.

In an update two weeks ago, Detective Chief Superintendent Bennett described this search as “painstaking”.

He said officers were “happy with the progress” but that there was “no great milestone to report”. While several items have been removed from the search site for forensic analysis, the ABC understands that there is no groundbreaking information.

Before the search began, police publicly confirmed for the first time they were looking for William's remains. Over the past four weeks, several forensic experts have attended a site, about 900 metres from the home formerly owned by William's late foster grandmother.

It's been the main site for the most recent search efforts. A local creek, along with water tanks in the area have also been drained, while police scour those locations and a nearby dam.

Police have also seized the foster grandmother's car from its new owner. It is being examined and a coronial inquest into William's death is ongoing.

In a statement, a police spokesperson said Deputy State Coroner Harriet Grahame had been kept up to date with developments from the search.

"Investigators would like to thank the NSW Rural Fire Service, Salvation Army and the local community for their hospitality and assistance," the spokesperson said.

They said officers remained "committed to finding William Tyrrell".

Royals release extraordinary joint statement

Buckingham palace has released a rare statement to condemn the BBC's new documentary about the royal family, saying the claims the show made are "overblown and unfounded".

The extraordinary joint statement from Buckingham Palace, Kensington Palace and Clarence House was aired during the two-part series titled Princes and the Press, which details how Prince Harry and Prince William have been treated by the media.

The royal family was reportedly furious when they were not given the chance to vet the documentary before it aired, and issued a blistering statement to the BBC ahead of the broadcast.

"A free, responsible and open Press is of vital importance to a healthy democracy," the joint statement read.

"However, too often overblown and unfounded claims from unnamed sources are presented as facts and it is disappointing when anyone, including the BBC, gives them credibility."

The first episode of the series aired on Monday night and featured Omid Scobie, a journalist who co-authored Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's unofficial autobiography Finding Freedom.

Scobie claimed that unfavourable stories about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex has been vetted by members of the royal household, while journalist Dan Wootton said officials "behind the scenes" has reached out to press amid growing frustrations with Harry and Meghan's behaviour.

"There were some people who felt [Meghan] needed to be put in her place," Scobie said during the documentary.

"I think by leaking a negative story, that's punishment."

The documentary also discussed rumours of "competitiveness" between members of the royal family, and aired reports of Meghan's alleged "bullying" while in the palace.

Jenny Afia, a lawyer who had previously worked with Meghan, denied reports that the Duchess was "difficult" to work with.

"Those stories were false. This narrative that no one can work with the Duchess of Sussex that she was too difficult, demanding a boss, and that everyone had to leave is just not true," she said.

It has been reported that officials at the BBC refused to allow Buckingham Palace advance footage of the first episode of the documentary, in order to eliminate any chance of censorship.

Greta Thunberg's first vaccine comes with global statement

Swedish climate activist, Greta Thunberg, took to social media, tweeting: "Today I got my first COVID-19 vaccination dose. I am extremely grateful and privileged to be able to live in a part of the world where I can already get vaccinated."

But then she went on to blast the more wealthy countries for taking more than their fair share of the vaccines. She wrote: "The vaccine distribution around the world is extremely unequal.

The Swedish climate activist, 18, tweeted a photograph of herself wearing a fox-print face mask with a bandaid on her upper arm, using the hashtags '#VaccineEquity' and '#VaccineForAll'.

Thunberg is one of a number of famous people, encouraging others to get the jab as soon as it's available to them. What she says about the distribution of the vaccines has been backed up by media such as the New York Times which reported recently: "84 percent of shots that have gone into arms worldwide have been administered in high- and upper-middle-income countries. Only 0.3 percent of doses have been administered in low-income countries.''

Other celebrities including David Beckham and Billie Eilish, have asked world leaders to share surplus COVID vaccines with poorer countries.

Before the G7 summit in June, Unicef ambassadors warned in an open letter how important it would be to ensure the "fair and equitable" supplies of vaccines internationally or the world would continue to be at risk from future mutations of the virus.

The defamation lawsuit launched by Ben Roberts-Smith against Nine-owned newspapers, including The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, and The Canberra Times, has commenced with an explosive statement from the soldier’s lawyers.

Bruce McClintock SC said the reports published in 2018, which contained allegations including involvement in the unlawful killing of Afghans and bullying of Special Air Services Regiment (SAS) colleagues, “destroyed” Mr Roberts-Smith’s reputation as an “exceptional solder” with “dishonest”, “corrosive” journalism.

“This is a case about courage, devotion to duty, self sacrifice,” Mr McClintock told the court.

“This is a case about how a man with a deservedly high reputation of courage, skill and decency in how he carried out his military duties had his reputation destroyed by a campaign of jealous people,” he told Justice Anthony Besanko.

The court also heard of the decorated soldier’s high kill count during his time in Afghanistan.

Mr Roberts-Smith alleges he was defamed by accusations that he “broke the moral and legal rules of military engagement” while deployed and is “therefore a criminal”.

Mr McClintock spoke of Australia’s pride in its military, but that many were unwilling to confront the real, violent nature of war.

“The people reporting on matters involving [Mr Roberts Smith] have forgotten [that war is violent] in their rush to tear him down,” he said.

The court also heard Mr Roberts-Smith was a recipient of “puerile” behaviour from fellow soldiers after he was awarded the Victoria Cross in recognition for his bravery.

Nine have claimed one witness, known as Person 1, was bullied by Mr Roberts-Smith.

The media giant’s court documents claim Mr Roberts-Smith and the late Sergeant Matt Locke shot and killed a teenage boy.

Mr McClintock countered that the boy was a “fighting age male” and a “spotter” for the enemy.

Mr Roberts-Smith is expected to tell the court of an incident with another soldier, Person 10, who Roberts-Smith saw shooting towards a woman and child.

When they returned to base, Mr Roberts-Smith confronted Person 10 and asked why he’d shot at unarmed civilians.

Mr McClintock said when Person 10 “giggled” in response Mr Roberts-Smith punched him in the face.

“He shouldn’t have done this but he was shocked by Person 10’s intention and the lack of understanding of the gravity of his actions,” he said.

“The potential impact of killing an innocent woman and child, not just on the SAS and our country generally, but on Person 10 himself would have been a disaster.”

The prosthetic

Mr McClintock said the leg of an Afghan man Mr Roberts-Smith was alleged to have shot dead, was “souvenired” by another SAS officer - an enemy of Mr Roberts-Smith - who took it and mounted it back at the base.

The leg was later used as a “novelty-drinking vessel”, with pictures of soldiers drinking from it having since emerged.

"It might appear bad taste to drink from a souvenir prosthetic leg taken from a dead enemy," Mr McClintock told the court.

"In the scheme of human wickedness, it does not, in my submission, rate terribly high.

"And allowances should be made — my client will say something along these lines — for the necessity for men who've engaged in armed combat to decompress afterwards."

Mr McClintock said his client did not drink from the leg.

Mr McClintock’s opening address is expected to run for two to three days before Mr Roberts-Smith takes the stand as a witness.

The trial will run for two months.

Image: Getty Images

Harry and Meghan fight back in revealing new statement

After the Queen said that the Sussexes will no longer be able to use the word “royal” in their branding after they cease being working members of the royal family, the Sussexes have hit back in an emotional and wordy statement.

The Queen recently explained that the Sussexes would not be able to go forward with their “Sussex Royal” branding, which is less than ideal considering their website and Instagram accounts as well as the brand the Sussexes were trademarking use the word “royal” in it.

At 7:30 pm on Friday night UK time, a spokesman for the Sussexes put out a statement before a 1,114 word version was published on their website.

A Palace statement earlier this week said: “As The Duke and Duchess are stepping back as senior Members of the Royal Family, and will work towards financial independence, use of the word ‘Royal’, in this context, needed to be reviewed.”

However, according to the Duke and Duchess in their statement: “While there is not any jurisdiction by The Monarchy or Cabinet Office over the use of the word ‘Royal’ overseas, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex do not intend to use ‘Sussex Royal’ or any iteration of the word ‘Royal’ in any territory.”

The couple also wrote in their statement that the royal family “respect and understand” their wish to live a “more independent life” and that they “remain a valuable part of Her Majesty’s family”.

“The preference of The Duke and Duchess of Sussex was to continue to represent and support Her Majesty The Queen albeit in a more limited capacity, while not drawing on the Sovereign Grant,” it read.

“Per the agreement The Duke and Duchess of Sussex understand that they are required to step back from Royal duties and not undertake representative duties on behalf of Her Majesty The Queen.”

The statement also brought into question whether or not the Sussexes will be paying for their own security.

“It is agreed that The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will continue to require effective security to protect them and their son,” the statement reads in part. “This is based on The Duke’s public profile by virtue of being born into The Royal Family, his military service, the Duchess’ own independent profile, and the shared threat and risk level documented specifically over the last few years.”
<blockquote style="background: #FFF; The statement from her yesterday was surprisingly open.

“Following many months of conversations and more recent discussions, I am pleased that together we have found a constructive and supportive way forward for my grandson and his family,” the Queen’s statement reads.

“Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved members of my family.

“I recognise the challenges they have experienced as a result of intense scrutiny over the last two years and support their wish for a more independent life.

“I want to thank them for all their dedicated work across this country, the Commonwealth and beyond, and am particularly proud of how Meghan has so quickly become one of the family.

“It is my whole family’s hope that today’s agreement allows them to start building a happy and peaceful new life.”

Many royal fans were surprised by the personal nature of the note, as the Queen consistently uses “I” and “my family” throughout the statement.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by The Royal Family (@theroyalfamily) on Jan 16, 2020 at 9:09am PST

The statement from Buckingham Palace and therefore Prince Harry and Meghan was much more formal. Royal fans were quick to pick up on the use of “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex”, which suggested that they’re using their titles while they still have them.

“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are grateful to Her Majesty and the Royal Family for their ongoing support as they embark on the next chapter of their lives.

“As agreed in this new arrangement, they understand that they are required to step back from royal duties, including official military appointments. They will no longer receive public funds for royal duties.

“With The Queen’s blessing, the Sussexes will continue to maintain their private patronages and associations. While they can no longer formally represent The Queen, the Sussexes have made clear that everything they do will continue to uphold the values of Her Majesty.

“The Sussexes will not use their HRH titles as they are no longer working members of the Royal Family.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by The Duke and Duchess of Sussex (@sussexroyal) on Jan 18, 2020 at 10:30am PST

“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have shared their wish to repay Sovereign Grant expenditure for the refurbishment of Frogmore Cottage, which will remain their UK family home.

“Buckingham Palace does not comment on the details of security arrangements. There are well established independent processes to determine the need for publicly-funded security.

“This new model will take effect in the spring of 2020.”

This essentially means that Prince Harry and Meghan are giving up their royal titles and stepping away from all of the charity work that was done in partnership with the Royal family.

Royal fans of Harry were quick to point out that this is devastating for Prince Harry as it means that the army charities he proudly supported will no longer receive his help.

“It’s so sad that Harry has to give up his military career over this, Meghan KNEW who Harry was and knew what she was getting into so now a couple years later does she want to change it?!! It’s not fair on him having to walk away from his friends, life to move to where she stayed!!” one fan angrily commented underneath the announcement.

Others noticed that their comments were being deleted on the post, which only added fuel to the fire.

“Why are you deleting negative but true posts???” another fan pointed out.

It has been an intense ten days for the British Royal family, but it appears that a resolution is slowly but surely coming forward.

Kensington Palace releases rare statement regarding Duchess Kate

The Duchess of Cambridge’s beauty is all her own despite rumours circulating she has had work done for years – and the Kensington Palace has issued a rare statement slamming any claims she has.

A plastic surgeon took to Instagram to share in a now deleted post of the 37-year-old royal two side-by-side images in a “before and after” comparison.

“Our Kate loves a bit of baby Botox,” Somji wrote under the photos, reported the New York Post.

“Note the reduction of fine lines on the forehead. But also note the depression of the medial (middle part) brow but elevation of the lateral tail of the brow.”

Baby botox is a more subtle form of injections used to soften and relax wrinkles.

"It prevents wrinkles but you'll still have movement. It acts like a little complexion freshener," Pamela Benito, a cosmetic dentist and aesthetic medicine specialist, told Byrdie.

While it is unusual for the palace to comment on juvenile rumours including the Duchess’ beauty skin routine – it seems they have had enough of the slack talk and have absolutely refuted the royal has had any cosmetic procedures.

The Kensington Palace said the Instagram post is “categorically not true” and added that, “The Royal Family never endorse commercial activity.”

Serena Williams' latest fashion statement at French Open causes a stir

It appears Serena Williams was looking to make a fashion statement yet again this year, while playing on court in her daring outfit at the French Open.

It comes a year after the 23-grand slam champion caused a stir at the French Open last year with her black panther catsuit, which resulted in the tournament implementing a change in the dress code to regulate players' uniforms.

“I think that sometimes we’ve gone too far,” the French Tennis federation president, Bernard Giudicelli, said at the time.

“One must respect the game and the place.”

However, Williams' latest black and white ensemble appeared to tick all the boxes – with a twist – as it was the design of the two-piece outfit that turned heads.

The Nike garments were designed by Virgil Abloh and features the words “Champion, “Queen” and “Mother” written on the fabric.

“It has words in French which talks about me being a mum, a queen and a champion. It's all positive re-enforcement for me and I kind of love that,” Williams told Tennis Channel.

The day before her first match, the mother-of-one took to social media to reveal the full look, which included a cape and long skirt.

The “super-hero” duped outfit seemed to work out for the tennis champ in the end as well, as she overcame a slow start for a 2-6, 6-1, 6-0 win against 83rd ranked Vitalia Diatchenko in her opening game.

She went on to only lose one out of the last 13 games, resulting in securing herself a spot in the second round.

Speaking of her terrible start in the first set, the former world number one admitted, “I just got nervous out there and I stopped moving my feet.

“And it was like concrete blocks on my feet. I was, like, 'You've got to do something.'

“I was just making so many errors. Every shot I hit, I felt like I was hitting on my frame. I usually don't hit balls on my frame. I was just off, basically, and then instead of correcting it, I just kept getting worse.”

Williams added, “I knew it couldn't get worse and I knew I could only go up. That's what I told myself.”

Scroll through the gallery above to see Serena William’s daring French Open outfit.
