Bride weds in 170-year-old veil passed down through 6 generations

Just when it seems all the old traditions we love so much about weddings are being forsaken to make room for new trends, one bride has made sure her family’s tradition stays alive. Thirty-eight-year-old Emma Marsh from Buckinghamshire in the UK wore an almost 170-year-old veil that has been passed down through six generations when she wed husband Donald recently.

“I am the eldest of three sisters and was unaware of the veil until my mum brought it down from the attic after our engagement,” Marsh told Daily Mail. “It had beautiful embroidery on it. Out of coincidence the pattern went perfectly with the lace of my dress.”

Marsh says she felt “very honoured” to continue the tradition, which would make her the sixth generation to tie the knot in the beautiful veil. “It also made me reflect on how the celebration of a marriage is probably very different to 200 years ago.”

The veil dates back to at least 1849, when Emma’s great-great-great-grandmother Hannah was married. It made another appearance in 1887 at the wedding of Hannah’s son John, then again in 1913 at John’s son Joseph’s wedding, then again in 1944 at Joseph’s daughter Joan’s wedding.

Before Emma’s ceremony, it was most recently worn in 1972 when her now-68-year-old mother Gillian wore it. “It was quite emotional for Emma to carry on the family tradition and the veil brought back memories of her ancestors and how lucky we are that it has survived,” Gillian explained.
