Unbelievable moment man finds his aunt's artwork in op shop

<p>A man has broken down in tears as he found a painting done by his aunt in his favourite op shop. </p> <p>Influencer Christian Hull was sifting through an antique shop in Brisbane when something caught his eye from behind a cushion. </p> <p>"I walk into this stall and there on the ground is a beautiful brightly coloured art work from the 1980's that reminds me so much of my aunt," he said of his artist aunt, Helen McCosker, who is based in Sydney and has no connection to the Queensland city.</p> <p>"It was her style of drawing and just screamed at me," Hull shared on his social media accounts.</p> <p>"I thought to myself how strange that this drawing instantly reminded me of her. I wanted it... I knew it wasn't one of hers because the likely hood of that was 0%. No way a drawing she did in Sydney in the 80's would be in my favourite shop in Brisbane staring at me."</p> <p>His find was confirmed when he spotted his aunt's signature in the bottom corner of the artwork, as he said, "There in the corner I saw it and SCREAMED! I needed to have it."</p> <p>The content creator was in tears at the find, and quickly snapped up the artwork which was priced at $200, before he promptly called his aunt to tell her of the news, as he found out the story behind the painting. </p> <p>"I was hoping it was a secret lover and that I had uncovered a scandalous family secret but sadly not the case," he shared.</p> <p>Hull relayed that the artwork was of a man named Andrew and was done in a life drawing class she used to go to, with it still being in it's original frame.</p> <p>"We both were shocked at the randomness of the discover... It's so crazy that I saw this thought of her and then realised it was one of her works!" he said of the "surreal" moment.</p> <p>Fans were equally amazed by the find, as one person commented, "That's crazyyyyy. Jack the Ripper's identity revealed after 137 years

<p>A major breakthrough in the Jack the Ripper case could have identified the notorious serial killer after 137 years of mystery. </p> <p>Jack the Ripper terrorised the streets of London in 1888, with police believing he was responsible for the brutal rape and murders of at least five women – known as the Canonical Five – but could very well have committed at least six more.</p> <p>The victims, who were all brutally slain between August and November 1888, were Mary Nichols, 43, Annie Chapman, 47, Elizabeth Stride, 44, Catherine Eddowes, 46, and Mary Jane Kelly, 25.</p> <p>Police, historians and crime buffs have long questioned the real identity of the serial killer, and despite a long list of potential suspects, investigators have not been able to definitively pin down a single suspect to the crimes.</p> <p>However, new evidence has emerged in the case, leading to a possible answer. </p> <p>Self-proclaimed ‘Ripperologist’ and British author Russell Edwards purchased a shawl belonging to one of the victims, Catherine Eddowes, which contained blood and semen back in 2007.</p> <p>Years later, the shawl was put through rigorous forensic testing where it was found to contain DNA from two separate people.</p> <p>One of them matched a descendant of the female victim, while the other matched the descendants of a Polish immigrant, who would have been around 23 at the time of the murders.</p> <p>Upon discovering this male’s name, Edwards was able to reveal the true identity of the infamous‘Jack the Ripper’: Aaron Kosminski.</p> <p>“Considering his DNA is on the shawl that was at the murder scene and he was named, I have never considered anyone else to be the Ripper,” Edwards told <em><a href="https://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/real-life/news-life/we-may-finally-know-the-true-identity-of-jack-the-ripper-after-137-years-of-mystery/news-story/14f22046597546a64113567752d972c9" target="_blank" rel="noopener">news.com.au</a></em>.</p> <p>“I have, however, looked into every other suspect in order to eliminate them. The DNA work was a huge four-year process. We had to bypass the issue of contamination, plus many other hurdles."</p> <p>“It was a voyage of discovery, with many twists and turns. The adventure was thrilling from beginning to end and I was lucky to experience it.”</p> <p>Edwards said that when he discovered the DNA from the shawl matched, he was absolutely elated to have made such a breakthrough.</p> <p>“When we matched the DNA from the blood on the shawl with a direct female descendant of the victim, it was the singular most amazing moment of my life at the time,” he said.</p> <p>“We tested the semen left on the shawl. When we matched that, I was dumbfounded that we actually had discovered who Jack the Ripper truly was.”</p> <p>Born in Kłodawa in central Poland, Kosminski moved to England with his family as a child and eventually began working as a barber in London’s Whitechapel district.</p> <p>Medical records show that he had suffered from mental illness since at least 1885 and had spent time in various ‘lunatic asylums’ around London, with his condition reportedly taking the form of auditory hallucinations, a fear of being fed by other people, as well as a refusal to wash or bathe.</p> <p>He later died in 1919 at age 53.</p> <p>The descendants of Jack the Ripper’s victims are now calling for police to do an immediate investigation into Aaron Kosminski to make Edwards’ findings official.</p> <p>Karen Miller, the great-great-great-granddaughter of victim Catherine Eddowes, said that it would “mean a lot” to her and her family to put an end to this 137-year-old mystery.</p> <p>“The name Jack the Ripper has become sensationalised, it has gone down in history as this famous character,” the 53-year-old told the <em><a title="www.dailymail.co.uk" href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-14234461/Descendants-Jack-Rippers-victims-DNA-breakthrough.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Daily Mail</a></em>.</p> <p>“It has all been about him, this iconic name, but people have forgotten about the victims who did not have justice at the time."</p> <p>“What about the real name of the person who did this? Having the real person legally named in a court which can consider all the evidence would be a form of justice for the victims. We have got the proof, now we need this inquest to legally name the killer."</p> <p>“It would mean a lot to me, to my family, to a lot of people to finally have this crime solved.”</p> <p>Despite the excitement over the new evidence, some have cast doubt on the findings.</p> <p>The research has not yet been published in a scientific peer-reviewed journal, which means that the claims cannot be independently verified or the methodology scrutinised.</p> <p>Under UK law, it is up to the attorney general to approve a further inquest into the Jack the Ripper case, with Attorney-General Michael Ellis refusing the request two years ago, saying there was “not sufficient new evidence” to support an inquest.</p> <p><em>Image credits: Instagram </em></p>

Man slapped with $76,000 bill on free cruise

<p>A couple from the US have been slapped with a five-figure bill after embarking on a cruise that they won. </p> <p>Mark and Tami were onboard the Norwegian Cruise Line ship Encore, after winning their trip for free, to celebrate Tami given a clean bill of health after the successful removal of a “mass from her lungs” in October 2024 following a cancer diagnosis.</p> <p>Just four days after setting off on their five-week journey, Mark fell ill and was taken to the ship's dedicated ICU with flu symptoms and reduced oxygen levels. </p> <p>He received oxygen, a catheter, IV medications, and X-rays, and when he felt better the next morning, asked to quarantine in his cabin room for the remainder of the trip. </p> <p>However, he was not allowed to leave the medical ward, and so the costs of his stay there continued to climb.</p> <p>“Mike spent a total of four days in the medical ward and asked to be released each day,” his daughter Krystal Cameron wrote in a <a href="https://www.gofundme.com/f/relieve-mike-and-tamis-medical-burden?attribution_id=sl:5f4f89c5-bda8-4947-8f2b-5c9203b2cf8f&lang=en_US&utm_campaign=man_ss_icons&utm_medium=customer&utm_source=copy_link" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-link-type="article-inline">GoFundMe</a> to help pay the $75,800 ($47,638 USD) medical bill.</p> <p>During that time, she said staff would not remove his IV line, or the catheter which Tamra claims had been incorrectly fitted and was “leaking”.</p> <p>“Not on your life would I put my life in these people’s hands,” Tamra added in a social media post.</p> <p>“Should have demanded to get off at (the) port (on the) British Virgin Islands, where I was lied to that they had no good hospital.”</p> <p>Norwegian Cruise Line confirmed to <a href="https://7news.com.au/news/mark-won-a-free-holiday-with-norwegian-cruise-line-then-he-was-slapped-with-a-75800-bill-onboard-c-17618959" target="_blank" rel="noopener">7News</a> that Mike’s medical procedures and resulting expenses have been reviewed internally by the company, writing in a statement, “Mr Cameron was admitted to the onboard medical centre and received appropriate treatment for his condition, followed by 62 hours of critical care."</p> <p>“We are committed to providing quality medical services and each of our ships is equipped with a state-of-the-art onboard medical centre, staffed with highly qualified physicians and nurses, to provide care for both guests and crew while at sea."</p> <p>The couple had purchased travel insurance and said the Norwegian Cruise Line medical secretary reassured them they were covered for $20,000 USD ($31,987 AUD) and told “not to worry” when they raised concerns.</p> <div> </div> <p>However, Norwegian Cruise Line maxed out both credit cards they had on file for the couple when charging them with the final bill, adding, “Medical insurance is not accepted onboard.”</p> <p>“We strongly encouraged the guest to file a claim with their health insurance provider post-cruise," Norwegian Cruise Line told <em>7News</em>. </p> <p>“As the guest did purchase travel insurance for their vacation, we have recommended they follow up on their claim with the insurance provider, after they have filed the claim with their health insurance provider.”</p> <p>But Krystal said “neither their travel insurance nor their personal health insurance will cover the medical treatments received”.</p> <p>The travel insurance company requires the couple’s health insurance company to initially pay the bill, but their health insurance company states because the incident happened abroad it is not covered by the policy, Krystal said.</p> <p>“Between Tami’s recent cancer diagnosis and surgery ... and my father’s illness ... their medical debt is quickly adding up,” Krystal said.</p> <p><em>Image credits: GoFundMe / Facebook </em></p>

Some vegetables are pretty low in fibre. So which veggies are high-fibre heroes?

You can eat loads of salads and vegetables and still fall short of your recommended daily fibre intake.</p> <p>So, which vegetables pack the biggest fibre punch? Here’s what you need to know.</p> <h2>What is fibre and how much am I supposed to be getting?</h2> <p>Fibre, or dietary fibre, refers to the parts of plant foods that our bodies cannot digest or absorb.</p> <p>It passes mostly unchanged through our stomach and intestines, then gets removed from the body through our <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0268005X09002501">stool</a>.</p> <p>There are two types of fibre which have different functions and health benefits: soluble and insoluble.</p> <p>Soluble fibre dissolves in water and can help lower blood cholesterol levels. Food sources include fruit, vegetables and legumes.</p> <p>Insoluble fibre adds bulk to the stool which helps move food through the <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0924224418300499">bowels</a>. Food sources include nuts, seeds and wholegrains.</p> <p>Both types are beneficial.</p> <p>Australia’s healthy eating guidelines <a href="https://www.eatforhealth.gov.au/nutrient-reference-values/nutrients/dietary-fibre">recommend</a> women consume 25 grams of fibre a day and men consume 30 grams a day.</p> <p>However, <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC5986479/">research</a> shows most people do not eat enough fibre. Most adults get about <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC5986479/">21 grams</a> a day.</p> <h2>4 big reasons to increase fibre</h2> <p>Boosting fibre intake is a manageable and effective way to improve your overall health.</p> <p>Making small changes to eat more fibrous vegetables can lead to:</p> <p><strong>1. Better digestion</strong></p> <p>Fibre helps maintain regular bowel movements and can alleviate <a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/apt.13167?casa_token=HTtHw4dBjtQAAAAA:HI22rAfowUBLRsg7UxeAPumvq32hnKLjxJRZZbu-26S2rxVWhmteYZ01F4_3JFJDjOTTMVRcntrecg">constipation</a>.</p> <p><strong>2. Better heart health</strong></p> <p>Increasing soluble fibre (by eating foods such as fruit and vegetables) can help lower cholesterol levels, which can <a href="https://www.bmj.com/content/347/bmj.f6879.short">reduce your risk of heart disease</a>.</p> <p><strong>3. Weight management</strong></p> <p>High-fibre foods are filling, which can help people feel fuller for longer and <a href="https://www.mdpi.com/2072-6643/9/2/149">prevent overeating</a>.</p> <p><strong>4. Reducing diabetes risk and boosting wellbeing</strong></p> <p>Fibre-rich diets are linked to a reduced risk of chronic conditions such as <a href="https://idp.springer.com/authorize/casa?redirect_uri=https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00394-015-0831-3&amp;casa_token=skn6pDaWHcYAAAAA:w8PDhyb-G1gDAiflBK6-l5fgFEy_1955V7nTDIKTg6GOzmEzpRaJO3ErLzryemjf2C4Yo_ybQSaj2Yc">type 2 diabetes</a> and <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0959804901002544">colorectal cancer</a>.</p> <p>Recent <a href="https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(18)31809-9/fulltext">research</a> published in prestigious medical journal The Lancet provided some eye-opening stats on why fibre matters.</p> <p>The researchers, who combined evidence from clinical trials, found people who ate 25–29 grams of fibre per day had a 15–30% lower risk of life-threatening conditions like heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes compared to those who consumed fewer than 15 grams of fibre per day.</p> <h2>So which vegetables are highest in fibre?</h2> <p>Vegetables are excellent sources of both soluble and insoluble fibre, along with essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.</p> <p>The following veggies are some of the <a href="https://afcd.foodstandards.gov.au/foodsbynutrientsearch.aspx?nutrientID=AOACDFTOTW">highest</a> in fibre:</p> <ul> <li>green peas</li> <li>avocado</li> <li>artichokes</li> <li>parsnips</li> <li>brussels sprouts</li> <li>kale</li> <li>sweet potatoes</li> <li>beetroot</li> <li>carrots</li> <li>broccoli</li> <li>pumpkin</li> </ul> <h2>Which vegetables are low in fibre?</h2> <p>Comparatively lower fibre veggies include:</p> <ul> <li>asparagus</li> <li>spinach (raw)</li> <li>cauliflower</li> <li>mushrooms</li> <li>capsicum</li> <li>tomato</li> <li>lettuce</li> <li>cucumber</li> </ul> <p>These vegetables have lots of health benefits. Beloved Man About the House actor passes away

<p>English actor Brian Murphy best known for his role as George Roper in <em>Man About the House </em>and its spinoff series <em>George and Mildred</em> has died aged 92. </p> <p>The star's agent confirmed he died on Sunday at his home in Kent, with his wife and actress, Linda Regan, by his side. </p> <p>"It is with the greatest of sadness that we have to announce the death of our client actor Brian Murphy," the actor's agent, Thomas Bowington, said in a statement to <em>Deadline</em>. </p> <p>"It is almost impossible to describe the depth of his talent and humanity. A truly joyful and profoundly good hearted man."</p> <p>Regan has since paid tribute to the actor, who she was married to for over 30 years, with an emotional message. </p> <p>"My love for you will never die. RIP sweetheart," she wrote to X, alongside a photo of them kissing. </p> <p>"I will love you forever darling, and all your wishes will be carried out as you wanted. Why the WHO has recommended switching to a healthier salt alternative

<p><em><a href="https://theconversation.com/profiles/xiaoyue-luna-xu-1388807">Xiaoyue (Luna) Xu</a>, <a href="https://theconversation.com/institutions/unsw-sydney-1414">UNSW Sydney</a> and <a href="https://theconversation.com/profiles/bruce-neal-69">Bruce Neal</a>, <a href="https://theconversation.com/institutions/george-institute-for-global-health-874">George Institute for Global Health</a></em></p> <p>This week the <a href="https://www.who.int/news-room/events/detail/2025/01/27/default-calendar/launch-of-the-who-guideline-on-the-use-of-lower-sodium-salt-substitutes">World Health Organization</a> (WHO) released new guidelines recommending people switch the regular salt they use at home for substitutes containing less sodium.</p> <p>But what exactly are these salt alternatives? And why is the WHO recommending this? Let’s take a look.</p> <h2>A new solution to an old problem</h2> <p>Advice to eat less salt (sodium chloride) is not new. It has been part of international and Australian guidelines <a href="https://www.ahajournals.org/doi/full/10.1161/HYPERTENSIONAHA.123.21343?rfr_dat=cr_pub++0pubmed&amp;url_ver=Z39.88-2003&amp;rfr_id=ori%3Arid%3Acrossref.org">for decades</a>. This is because evidence clearly shows the sodium in salt can <a href="https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/salt-reduction">harm our health</a> when we eat too much of it.</p> <p>Excess sodium increases the risk of high blood pressure, which affects millions of Australians (around <a href="https://www.aihw.gov.au/reports/risk-factors/high-blood-pressure/contents/summary">one in three adults</a>). High blood pressure (<a href="https://www.healthdirect.gov.au/high-blood-pressure-hypertension">hypertension</a>) in turn increases the risk of heart disease, stroke and kidney disease, among other conditions.</p> <p>The WHO estimates <a href="https://www.who.int/news-room/events/detail/2025/01/27/default-calendar/launch-of-the-who-guideline-on-the-use-of-lower-sodium-salt-substitutes">1.9 million deaths</a> globally each year can be attributed to eating too much salt.</p> <p>The WHO recommends consuming no more than <a href="https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/salt-reduction">2g of sodium daily</a>. However people eat on average more than double this, around <a href="https://www.who.int/news-room/events/detail/2025/01/27/default-calendar/launch-of-the-who-guideline-on-the-use-of-lower-sodium-salt-substitutes">4.3g a day</a>.</p> <p>In 2013, WHO member states <a href="https://iris.who.int/bitstream/handle/10665/366393/9789240069985-eng.pdf?sequence=1">committed to reducing</a> population sodium intake <a href="https://www.who.int/news/item/09-03-2023-massive-efforts-needed-to-reduce-salt-intake-and-protect-lives">by 30% by 2025</a>. But cutting salt intake has proved very hard. Most countries, including Australia, will not meet the WHO’s goal for reducing sodium intake <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2161831322004690?via%3Dihub_">by 2025</a>. The WHO has since <a href="https://www.who.int/news-room/events/detail/2025/01/27/default-calendar/launch-of-the-who-guideline-on-the-use-of-lower-sodium-salt-substitutes">set the same target for 2030</a>.</p> <p>The difficulty is that eating less salt means accepting a less salty taste. It also requires changes to established ways of preparing food. This has proved too much to ask of people making food at home, and too much for the food industry.</p> <h2>Enter potassium-enriched salt</h2> <p>The main lower-sodium salt substitute is called potassium-enriched salt. This is salt where some of the sodium chloride has been replaced with potassium chloride.</p> <p>Potassium is an <a href="https://www.healthdirect.gov.au/potassium">essential mineral</a>, playing a key role in all the body’s functions. The high potassium content of fresh fruit and vegetables is one of the main reasons they’re so good for you. While people are eating more sodium than they should, many don’t get enough potassium.</p> <p>The WHO recommends a daily potassium intake of 3.5g, but on the whole, people in most countries consume significantly <a href="https://www.ahajournals.org/doi/full/10.1161/HYPERTENSIONAHA.123.21343?rfr_dat=cr_pub++0pubmed&amp;url_ver=Z39.88-2003&amp;rfr_id=ori%3Arid%3Acrossref.org">less than this</a>.</p> <p>Potassium-enriched salt benefits our health by cutting the amount of sodium we consume, and increasing the amount of potassium in our diets. Both help to <a href="https://theconversation.com/this-salt-alternative-could-help-reduce-blood-pressure-so-why-are-so-few-people-using-it-221409">lower blood pressure</a>.</p> <p>Switching regular salt for potassium-enriched salt has been shown to <a href="https://heart.bmj.com/content/108/20/1608">reduce the risk</a> of heart disease, stroke and premature death in large trials around the world.</p> <p>Modelling studies have projected that population-wide switches to potassium-enriched salt use would prevent hundreds of thousands of deaths from cardiovascular disease (such as heart attack and stroke) each year in <a href="https://www.bmj.com/content/369/bmj.m824.long">China</a> and <a href="https://www.ahajournals.org/doi/10.1161/HYPERTENSIONAHA.122.19072?url_ver=Z39.88-2003&amp;rfr_id=ori:rid:crossref.org&amp;rfr_dat=cr_pub%20%200pubme">India</a> alone.</p> <p>The key advantage of switching rather than cutting salt intake is that potassium-enriched salt can be used as a direct one-for-one swap for regular salt. It looks the same, works for seasoning and in recipes, and most people don’t notice any important <a href="https://theconversation.com/this-salt-alternative-could-help-reduce-blood-pressure-so-why-are-so-few-people-using-it-221409">difference in taste</a>.</p> <p>In the <a href="https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2105675">largest trial</a> of potassium-enriched salt to date, more than 90% of people were still using the product after five years.</p> <h2>Making the switch: some challenges</h2> <p>If fully implemented, this could be one of the most consequential pieces of advice the WHO has ever provided.</p> <p>Millions of strokes and heart attacks could be prevented worldwide each year with a simple switch to the way we prepare foods. But there are some obstacles to overcome before we get to this point.</p> <p>First, it will be important to balance the benefits and the risks. For example, people with <a href="https://www.ahajournals.org/doi/full/10.1161/HYPERTENSIONAHA.123.21343?rfr_dat=cr_pub++0pubmed&amp;url_ver=Z39.88-2003&amp;rfr_id=ori%3Arid%3Acrossref.org">advanced kidney disease</a> don’t handle potassium well and so these products are not suitable for them. This is only <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8177747/">a small proportion</a> of the population, but we need to ensure potassium-enriched salt products are labelled with appropriate warnings.</p> <p>A key challenge will be making potassium-enriched salt more affordable and accessible. Potassium chloride is more expensive to produce than sodium chloride, and at present, potassium-enriched salt is mostly sold as a niche health product at a <a href="https://publichealth.jmir.org/2021/7/e27423">premium price</a>.</p> <p>If you’re looking for it, <a href="https://www.georgeinstitute.org/switchthesalt#card-with-text-2166">salt substitutes</a> may also be called low-sodium salt, potassium salt, heart salt, mineral salt, or sodium-reduced salt.</p> <p>A <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8319774/">review published in 2021</a> found low sodium salts were marketed in only 47 countries, mostly high-income ones. Prices ranged from the same as regular salt to almost 15 times higher.</p> <p>An expanded supply chain that produces much more food-grade potassium chloride will be needed to enable wider availability of the product. And we’ll need to see potassium-enriched salt on the shelves next to regular salt so it’s easy for people to find.</p> <p>In countries like Australia, about 80% of the salt we eat comes from <a href="https://www.foodstandards.gov.au/consumer/nutrition/sodium-salt/salthowmuch">processed foods</a>. Tonsils can grow back after they’ve been removed – here’s which other body parts can regenerate

<p><em><a href="https://theconversation.com/profiles/adam-taylor-283950">Adam Taylor</a>, <a href="https://theconversation.com/institutions/lancaster-university-1176">Lancaster University</a></em></p> <p>The human body is composed of over <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6085824/">37 trillion cells</a>, each with a limited lifespan. These cells are continuously replaced to maintain organ and system function. Yet over time, or as a result of damage, the number of functioning cells can decrease to a level that causes symptoms or even organ failure.</p> <p>Regeneration of organs and systems is a scientific holy grail that relies on <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9973391/">stem cells</a>, but due to their limited number and slow division rate, this isn’t a practical route to organ regeneration. It would take many years to repopulate all the cell types needed.</p> <p>However, some people see organs “reappear”, like <a href="https://edition.cnn.com/2025/01/02/health/tonsils-regrow-sore-throat/index.html">Katy Golden</a> who had her tonsils removed for a second time as an adult after they grew back over 40 years.</p> <p>One reason that tonsils may grow back is that one of the operations to remove them is a <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22431869/">partial tonsillectomy</a>. Only removing part of the tonsils leads to a quicker recovery and fewer complications, but around <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC5639321/">6% of children may see regrowth</a>, which may require further surgery in later life.</p> <p>Most people associate organ regrowth and regeneration with the liver. As little as <a href="https://www.nih.gov/news-events/nih-research-matters/cells-maintain-repair-liver-identified">10% of the liver</a> can regrow into a fully functioning liver. This is also how partial liver transplants allow the <a href="https://bmcsurg.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12893-019-0606-5">donor to “regrow”</a> a normal sized and fully functioning liver.</p> <p>One organ that has a surprising capacity to regenerate is the spleen and sometimes it can regenerate without people realising.</p> <p>The spleen is a high-risk organ for injury and is the <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4056798/">most commonly injured organ</a> in blunt abdominal trauma during traffic collisions, sporting injuries or trivial activities such as <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8551460/">bumping into furniture</a>.</p> <p>The spleen is at high risk because it has lots of blood vessels and hence lots of blood, but is only surrounded by a <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31623879/">thin capsule</a> that can tear in trauma, allowing blood to leak out. This can <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6783166/">result in death</a> if not treated promptly.</p> <p>What may also happen is small pieces of the spleen – sometimes just a few cells – can become free in the abdomen and go on to “grow” where they settle – termed <a href="https://ajronline.org/doi/10.2214/AJR.11.7896">splenosis</a>, going on to have <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4762861/">similar functional activity</a> to a mature, normally located spleen. This can be beneficial for those who have to have their spleen removed due to traumatic injury, with some reports suggesting regeneration in up to <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/2603609/">66% of patients</a>.</p> <p>In the last few years, our lungs have also been shown to have regenerative capacity. It is well known that smoking and other pollutants <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK53021/">destroy the alveoli</a> (tiny air sacs) where oxygen is passed to the blood. Stopping smoking has been shown to allow cells that have avoided damage from the cancer-causing chemicals in tobacco smoke to help <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-020-1961-1">regenerate and repopulate</a> the lining of parts of the airways with healthy cells.</p> <p>Where a lung has been removed, the remaining lung has to adapt to support the tissues of the body and ensure enough oxygen gets to them. Studies have shown that the remaining lung <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22808959/">increases the number of alveoli</a> it has, rather than the remaining alveoli compensating by getting bigger to take up more oxygen.</p> <p>It isn’t just organs inside that regenerate. One organ that constantly does so on a humongous scale is the skin.</p> <p>As the largest organ, it has multiple barrier functions to keep things such as <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4529263/">water in</a> and <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6283644/">germs out</a>. With a <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0378517322004057">surface area of almost 2m²</a>, the skin requires a significant amount of regeneration to replenish the 500,000,000 cells that are lost each day – that’s over <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15541634/">2g of skin cells per day</a>.</p> <h2>Tissue regeneration is much more common</h2> <p>One of the most active regenerative tissues is the endometrial lining of the uterus which is shed every 28 days as part of the menstrual cycle and goes through about <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10308170/">450 cycles</a> of this during a woman’s life.</p> <p>This layer varies between <a href="https://pubs.rsna.org/doi/10.1148/rg.2017170008">0.5 and 18mm in thickness</a> depending on the stage of the menstrual cycle, the <a href="https://journals.physiology.org/doi/full/10.1152/physrev.00031.2019">functional cells</a> that are lost along with the blood from vessels that support a fertilised egg if it implants.</p> <p>Men’s genitalia can also show regeneration. <a href="https://www.nhs.uk/contraception/methods-of-contraception/vasectomy-male-sterilisation/what-is-it/">Vasectomy</a>, which removes a piece of the tube (<a href="https://www.cancer.gov/publications/dictionaries/cancer-terms/def/vas-deferens">vas deferens</a>) connecting the testes to the openings in the urethra, is used to reduce the chance of pregnancy by preventing sperm moving from the testes out of the penis.</p> <p>However, the cut ends of the ducts have shown regenerative capacity and reconnected. Some sections, where <a href="https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamasurgery/article-abstract/536907">up to 5cm</a> has been restricted or removed, have shown regeneration, even through <a href="https://bmcurol.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/1471-2490-6-25">scar tissue</a>. This “recanalisation” can result in unexpected pregnancies.</p> <p>Bone is another tissue that can regenerate. If you’ve ever broken a bone, you’ll know that it repairs so that (eventually) you will regain function.</p> <p>This process of repairing the break takes six to eight weeks. But the process of regenerating the bone architecture and strength <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC5365304/">continues for months and years</a> beyond this date.</p> <p>However, with <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6667184/">increasing age</a> and in <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC5643776/">post-menopausal woman</a>, this process slows and the bone may not regenerate to its <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6667184/">previous strength</a> or <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15763602/">structure</a>.</p> <p>Where paired organs exist and one is lost, there is good evidence that the remaining organ can increase its functional ability to help the body cope with maintaining function. For example, when one kidney is removed, the remaining kidney <a href="https://www.kidneyregistry.com/for-donors/kidney-donation-blog/what-changes-after-kidney-donation/">enlarges</a> to handle the extra workload, filtering blood and eliminating waste efficiently.</p> <p>Although organ regeneration is rare, it does happen and typically takes years to manifest because organs are complex structures. Work continues to try to understand how scientists can develop this knowledge to help with the shortage of donor organs. Eagles star announces retirement after shock health diagnosis

<p>Steuart Smith, the lead guitarist of iconic rock band <em>The Eagles</em> has announced his retirement. </p> <p>The 72-year-old musician, who joined the band back in 2001, shared that he would be leaving the band following a shock health diagnosis. </p> <p>"It is with profound regret that, due to performance issues associated with my recently diagnosed Parkinsonism, I find that I must bow out of my role with <em>The Eagle</em>s while I can still do so gracefully," Smith told <em>People</em> magazine. </p> <p>"It's been a great quarter of a century, and I had hoped to be able to finish out this year with the band, but I must now do what’s best for all concerned."</p> <p>According to<em> Parkinsons.org.uk</em>, parkinsonism is "an umbrella term used to cover a range of conditions that share similar symptoms to Parkinson's".</p> <p>Bandmate and founding member of <em>The Eagles, </em>Don Henley, also released a statement praising Smith's talents, adding that the group will "be forever grateful" for his contributions to the band and their tour. </p> <p>“Steuart Smith has retired from touring. <em>The Eagles </em>will be forever grateful for the extraordinary talents that he brought to both our recordings and live performances," he told the publication. </p> <p>"Steuart will be greatly missed, but he will always be a part of our musical family. We know our many fans join us in wishing him well."</p> <p><em>The Eagles, </em>were formed in 1972 with founding members Henley, Glenn Frey, Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner. Man reveals what it's like to spend 25 years at sea

<p>Mario Salcedo has mastered life at sea, living on cruise ships for 25 years and completing his 1,000th voyage with Royal Caribbean. </p> <p>Salcedo, also known as "Super Mario" in cruise circles revealed that he spends around  $101,000 on on cruises per year for a cabin with a balcony. </p> <p>The senior funds his ocean-bound lifestyle through investment management work. </p> <p>His loyalty to Royal Caribbean has earned him some recognition among the crew, with some ships creating makeshift offices for him on deck, complete with cordoned-off tables, chairs and signs reading "Super Mario's Office".</p> <p>Salcedo spoke about his love for cruising in an interview with <em>allthingscruise.com. </em></p> <p>"Cruising never gets old," he began. </p> <p>"I'm so used to being on ships that it feels more comfortable to me than being on land."</p> <p>The full-time cruiser began his life at sea after "tiring of the suit-and-tie business world and the long flights to international clients."</p> <p>The Cuban-born businessman went on his first cruise in 1997 and became hooked since then. </p> <p>In 2000 he began living on Royal Caribbean ships, spending only a few days per year on land, and taking a short 15 month break during the Covid pandemic. </p> <p>Salcedo said he spends about five hours a day working and "has fun" for the rest of it. </p> <p>"It's zero stress," he said. Whoopi Goldberg reveals birth name

<p>Whoopi Goldberg has surprised <em>The View </em>audiences by revealing her birth name. </p> <p>On Monday’s episode of the US daytime talk show, the co-hosts debated the necessity of a new platform that can tell house hunters in the US the political affiliations of their potential neighbours. </p> <p>While they were discussing the topic, Whoopi casually dropped her real birth name, with viewers wondering if they'd heard her correctly. </p> <p>Whoopi made it clear that she was against the start-up, saying: “That is not a good idea because number one, it’s none of your business, and number two, it just fosters more division." </p> <p>Co-host Sunny Hostin said: “I have a multiracial family, my goddaughter is gay, some of my best friends are trans. I wouldn’t want to live next to an extremist that would make my family feel unwelcome.”</p> <p>She then clarified, “But I don’t think that’s a political affiliation thing. I think it’s a behavioural thing.”</p> <p>Goldberg added that there's been a shift in recent years with more people openly talking about their political affiliations. </p> <p>“I was raised, you never asked anybody how they were voting. I would say, ‘Ma, who are you going to vote for?’ and she’d just give me that look. And she’d say to me, ‘Caryn, that’s nobody’s business,’” she recalled.</p> <p>Whoopi’s birth name is actually Caryn - pronounced ‘Karen'.</p> <p>When asked why she changed it, Goldberg replied in an old interview: “Here’s the thing. Been drinking and your heart’s fluttering? You may have ‘holiday heart’

Maybe you’ll drink a lot in one go.</p> <p>Then you feel your heart beating fast or irregularly. Maybe there’s a flutter in your chest or neck. Maybe you feel dizzy or short of breath. You may feel so concerned you go to the emergency department.</p> <p>After a few tests, you’re told you have “alcohol-induced atrial arrhythmia”. In plain English, that’s an irregular heartbeat brought on by excessive, or binge drinking.</p> <p>The condition is common at this time of year. That’s why it’s also called “<a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/000287037890296X">holiday heart</a>”.</p> <h2>What is holiday heart?</h2> <p>Every festive season, emergency departments see more people with <a href="https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/prehospital-and-disaster-medicine/article/impact-of-alcoholrelated-presentations-to-emergency-departments-on-days-with-a-public-holiday-or-sporting-event-a-retrospective-cohort-study/174603C0385FE6FCEBBAEA1A10DB25BD">alcohol-related issues</a> and <a href="https://www.heartlungcirc.org/article/S1443-9506(16)30583-2/pdf">irregular heart rhythms</a>.</p> <p>People often present with a fast or irregular heartbeats associated with binge drinking, overeating, dehydration and increased stress over the silly season – all contributing factors.</p> <p>We’ve known about holiday heart (or holiday heart syndrome) for <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/000287037890296X">almost 50 years</a>. Back in the 1970s, it was described as an abnormal heart rhythm (or arrythmia) in healthy people without heart disease after binge drinking alcohol. Doctors often saw this after weekends and public holidays, including the festive season.</p> <p>But an abnormal heart rhythm related to alcohol <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2405500X22009379#bib2">isn’t limited</a> to the holidays and weekends. We also see it in people who binge drink at any time of year, or in people who drink heavily over many years.</p> <h2>What causes it? How is it diagnosed?</h2> <p>Alcohol affects your <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC5513687/">heart, blood vessels, blood</a> and nervous system in many ways.</p> <p>For instance, when alcohol disrupts your nervous system, it can lead to dehydration and inflammation. In turn, this can cause disruption to the heart’s electrical system, which can lead to an <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28867013/">irregular heartbeat</a>.</p> <p>People may go to hospital with heart flutters, chest pain, fainting or passing out (syncope) and shortness of breath (dyspnoea). But an irregular heartbeat can also occur without symptoms, and may only be discovered when investigating other health issues.</p> <p>If you have symptoms, go to your emergency department or GP. Health professionals will likely run some tests to diagnose heart-related rhythm problems.</p> <p>These include monitoring the heart’s rhythm using an ECG or electrocardiogram. This simple and non-invasive test involves attaching some electrodes to your chest, arms and legs to produce a graph of electrical signals from the heart. Clinicians are often interested in the “p wave”, which represents the electrical activation of the upper chambers of the heart.</p> <p>You may also have a blood test to look at your electrolyte levels (essential minerals in your blood). A blood test may also test for markers of clotting and inflammation, as well as kidney and liver function.</p> <h2>Why are we concerned about it?</h2> <p>The vast majority of people diagnosed with holiday heart will recover, especially if treated early or if they stop or limit drinking alcohol.</p> <p>However, some people will be diagnosed with <a href="https://theconversation.com/getting-to-the-heart-of-the-matter-on-stroke-7180">atrial fibrillation</a> – the <a href="https://www.heartlungcirc.org/article/S1443-9506(18)31778-5/fulltext">most common</a> heart rhythm disorder in Australian adults, affecting <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1443950617304845">1.4-5.5%</a> of the population.</p> <p>If so, this may require medicines to restore a regular heartbeat (known as <a href="https://www.svhhearthealth.com.au/procedures/procedures-treatments/cardioversion">cardioversion</a>), electrical cardioversion (using a defibrillator to apply an electric shock to the heart) or a procedure called <a href="https://www.heart.org/en/health-topics/arrhythmia/prevention--treatment-of-arrhythmia/ablation-for-arrhythmias">cardiac ablation</a>.</p> <p>If atrial fibrillation is left untreated, there’s an increased risk of blood clots, stroke and a heart attack.</p> <h2>How can you prevent it?</h2> <p>There is no definitive number of drinks known to trigger holiday heart. So our best advice to prevent it is to avoid binge drinking. Australian <a href="https://www.nhmrc.gov.au/health-advice/alcohol">guidelines</a> recommend women and men limit alcohol to no more than ten standard drinks a week and no more than four standard drinks on any one day.</p> <p>We’d also recommend drinking water between alcoholic drinks. This can help reduce the dehydrating effects of alcohol and reduce the risk of alcohol-induced heart rhythm complications.</p> <p>Then do your best to <a href="https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/2156587214543143">reduce stress</a>, keep up with exercise and eat a diet that’s <a href="https://www.heartfoundation.org.au/healthy-living/healthy-eating/heart-healthy-eating-pattern">good for your heart</a> – all general advice for looking after your heart, whether or not you’re drinking alcohol.</p> <p>Taking these steps will help reduce your risk of holiday heart and keep your heart healthy this festive season.</p> <hr /> <p><em>Information about alcohol and the heart is available from the <a href="https://www.heartfoundation.org.au/blog/alcohol-and-heart-health">Heart Foundation</a>. Globetrotter reveals the worst places she has travelled to

<p dir="ltr">Seasoned globetrotter Lauren Heavner has revealed the five countries she would never return to, explaining why she will never recommend the popular destinations. </p> <p dir="ltr">Heavner documents her travels online, and after visiting 170 countries, she has formed some strong opinions on what destinations are not worth travelling to. </p> <p dir="ltr">Lauren explained to <em><a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/travel/article-14137407/worst-countries-world-france-canada-monaco.html">MailOnline</a></em> the reasons behind her controversial picks for her least favourite travel destinations, recounting her experiences in the holiday hotspots that earned them a place on her list. </p> <p dir="ltr"><strong>Monaco</strong></p> <p dir="ltr">In a viral TikTok video, Lauren explains that she’s been to the city-state of Monaco “at least 20 times”, but says “it’s not for her”, saying, “It just doesn’t have much of a culture. It’s impossible to walk around the streets and see anything.”</p> <p dir="ltr">She further explained to <em>MailOnline</em>, “The thing about Monaco, the bitter pill you can’t quite swallow, is that it’s unapologetically built for the ultra-rich. Every time I’m there, I’m confronted by my place in the food chain.”</p> <p dir="ltr">Despite its flaws, Lauren admits that Monaco is “beautiful at night” in the video and said the “view alone” could get her back there, despite the rich destination leaving her feeling like a “peasant”.</p> <p dir="ltr"><strong>Ghana</strong></p> <p dir="ltr">Lauren explained that she's been to the capital of Ghana, Accra, a few times, but said that there “wasn’t really much to do”, and felt “unease” as she explored the city. </p> <p dir="ltr">She commented, “I wandered the streets of Accra on my own for a while. But it didn’t take long before unease crept in.”</p> <p dir="ltr">“The chaos, the unfamiliarity, it’s not the kind of place that coddles a lone outsider. I felt slightly on guard. Maybe it was paranoia, maybe it was instinct - but either way, I retreated after only a short time of wandering solo.”</p> <p dir="ltr">She went on to tell <em>MailOnline</em>, “What stayed with me most about Ghana was the stark reality of its struggles. The poverty was impossible to ignore. Children working, shops stocked with imported goods far out of reach for most.”</p> <p dir="ltr">Despite her experiences, Lauren explains that “the lingering regret of not seeing enough” could lure her back. </p> <p dir="ltr"><strong>Malaysia</strong></p> <p dir="ltr">Recalling a trip to Malaysia with her friends, Lauren said the destination felt “pretty corrupt” and struggled with the social issues. </p> <p dir="ltr">“I was there with a group of friends. It was one of those punishingly hot, humid days where even breathing felt like work,” she said, recalling when she visited the batu caves. </p> <p dir="ltr">“We were all in shorts, naturally. But then came the rules: women had to be covered - no knees, no shoulders. Men? ‘Yeah, come as you are, it doesn't matter’.”</p> <p dir="ltr">She added that the worst aspect of her time in Malaysia was “the lack of things to do in the capital”, which she says “felt like a city waiting to impress but never delivering”.</p> <p dir="ltr"><strong>Canada</strong></p> <p dir="ltr">Lauren acknowledged that picking Canada for her least favourite destination was controversial, but explained that the country is “really not that exciting for an American”, clarifying to <em>MailOnline</em> that “there aren’t many negative aspects of Canada”, it’s just too “familiar”. </p> <p dir="ltr">She explains, “It’s familiar to the point of feeling predictable. The same big-box stores, the same general vibe - just with better manners and a lot more Tim Hortons (a Canadian coffeehouse and restaurant chain).”</p> <p dir="ltr">Lauren concluded, “Canada is great, but it’s not exactly exotic. It feels too much like home.”</p> <p dir="ltr"><strong>France</strong></p> <p dir="ltr">Lauren slammed Paris as “overrated” and said the capital is “the worst part of France”, and urged travellers to head elsewhere in the country. </p> <p dir="ltr">Speaking to <em>MailOnline</em>, she says she has “never felt unsafe in France” but adds that “Paris can be slightly dodgy in certain areas”.</p> <p dir="ltr">Lauren added, “Let’s just say France isn’t exactly known for rolling out the red carpet for outsiders. He never smoked, rarely drank and followed no special diet, apart from his ritual of having fish and chips every Friday. </p> <p>"If you drink too much or you eat too much or you walk too much — if you do too much of anything — you're going to suffer eventually," Tinniswood said.</p> <p>His family also said the great-grandfather had an "active retirement", volunteering as a church elder in Blundellsands United Reform Church where he also gave sermons.</p> <p>They have paid tribute to him, saying: "We would like to thank the many people in the UK and across the world who sent well wishes to John on his recent birthdays.</p> <p>"He really appreciated these birthday greetings and other messages of support."</p> <p>"John always liked to say thank you. So on his behalf , [we] thank all those who cared for him over the years, including his carers at the Hollies care home, his GPs, district nurses, occupational therapist and other NHS staff."</p> <p>Tinniswood lived through two world wars and served in the British Army Pay Corps in World War II.</p> <p>He is survived by his daughter Susan, four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. </p> <p>The world's oldest living woman, and oldest living person, is Japan's Tomiko Itooka, who is currently 116.</p> <p><em>Image: Instagram/ Guinness World Records</em></p>

Woman horrified after man brings his mother to first date

<p dir="ltr">A woman has been left stunned after her crush invited his mother to infiltrate their first date. </p> <p dir="ltr">The young woman took to Reddit to recall the mortifying moment, and to ask users if she was out of line by leaving the awkward date. </p> <p dir="ltr">The 23-year-old began the story by explaining how she matched with a 25-year-old man, who she referred to as Jake, on the dating app Hinge. </p> <p dir="ltr">She explained that the couple had been “chatting for a few weeks, and he seemed like a solid guy — funny, good taste in music, and even remembered I loved Italian food.”</p> <p dir="ltr">“He planned the date at this nice little spot in Dallas, which I thought was sweet,” she added. </p> <p dir="ltr">She continued, “I show up, and everything's fine at first. He's already there, we hug, and he even complimented my outfit.” </p> <p dir="ltr">“But like five minutes after I sit down, this older woman walks in. Jake stands up, waves her over, and says, ‘This is my mom!’ 'I thought I misheard him for a second.”</p> <p dir="ltr">After he introduced his mother to his date, she pulled up a chair and began asking the 23-year-old a slew of invasive questions. </p> <p dir="ltr">“She sits down at the table, all casual, and starts introducing herself to me like this is normal. Meanwhile, I'm sitting there, trying to figure out if I'm being pranked. I kind of laugh nervously and say, ‘Oh, I didn't know you were bringing anyone,’ and he goes, ‘Oh, she just wanted to meet you. Don't worry—it's not a big deal’.”</p> <p dir="ltr">“But it was a big deal because she didn't just stop by to say hi — she ordered wine and stayed. The whole time, she's asking me these personal questions about my job, my family, even if I want kids someday.” </p> <p dir="ltr">“It was like an interview, not a date. Jake barely said anything. He just smiled and kept nodding like this was all normal,” she revealed. </p> <p dir="ltr">The woman then shared that after 20 minutes of the awkward encounter, she decided to leave, and texted Jake that same evening to say she didn’t want to go on another date. </p> <p dir="ltr">She said, “I couldn't take it anymore. I said I wasn't feeling great and needed to leave. I texted him later, saying I didn't think it would work out and wished him well.”</p> <p dir="ltr">Although she thought she did the right thing, she began doubting her decision and questioned if she was in the wrong. </p> <p dir="ltr">The 23-year-old concluded the post by asking, '”Now I feel kind of bad. My roommate says I did the right thing because honestly, who brings their mom to a first date? But my coworker said it was rude to just leave and that maybe his mom was just super close to him or nervous for him or whatever. Was I wrong for walking out?”</p> <p dir="ltr">Reddit users flocked to the comments section and ran to her defence as they slammed Jake for bringing his mother along on the date. </p> <p dir="ltr">One person said, “It's absurd that he would bring her. Unless she needs constant supervision due to some health issue. That is a very strange dynamic. You did what most anyone else would have done.
