Passenger sparks debate over travellers sleeping in aisle seats

<p>A heated debate has erupted online after a passenger suggested those sitting in an aisle seat should remain alert and awake for the entire flight, with the only exception being if it's a long-flight of seven hours or more. </p> <p>“A person sitting in an aisle seat on a plane should not be allowed to sleep," they wrote on Reddit. </p> <p>The reason behind it, according to the passenger, is to ensure that middle and window seat passengers can access the toilet, get served by flight attendants, and evacuate quickly in an emergency. </p> <p>“There are some exceptions and those would probably be on any flight longer than seven hours.</p> <p>“But anything shorter than that, you should not be sleeping. What if the middle or window passenger needs the bathroom, or if the flight attendant needs to hand them something – You’ll be in the way.”</p> <p>They added that a snoozing aisle seat passenger could potentially slow down evacuation during an emergency and put everyone at risk. </p> <p>“Now you would be risking people’s lives because you fell asleep,” they wrote.</p> <p>Social media users flocked to the Reddit thread to share their thoughts. </p> <p> “Nah, just poke me and wake me up if you need me to get up or do something," one wrote. </p> <p>“I’m well aware that I’m in the way, believe me. I’m certainly not there because I wanted to be in the aisle seat.”</p> <p>“If you sleep in an aisle seat, you deal with people getting up. That’s the unwritten rule," another added. </p> <p>A few others supported the idea, but shared their own take on plane etiquette. </p> <p> “My take on this: if you sleep in the aisle seat, you must be okay with being woken up multiple times to let the folks in your row get up.</p> <p>“Other flight rules: middle seat gets the armrest, and window seat must raise the window shade during taxi, takeoff, and landing so the rest of us in the row can watch.”</p> <p><em>Image: Shutterstock</em></p>

Woman “bullied” on plane over budget seating trick

<p dir="ltr">A young woman has recalled a flight from hell when she was “bullied” by a couple who were trying to utilise a seating hack that went viral on TikTok. </p> <p dir="ltr">The solo traveller took to Reddit to recount the story and ask social media users if she was in the wrong for her action. </p> <p dir="ltr">The woman began by saying she usually pays more to select her plane seat ahead of time, but a medical emergency on another plane had her waiting on standby and left with no option other than to sit in a middle seat.</p> <p dir="ltr">When she was finally able to board, she was greeted by a couple who had purchased both the window and aisle seats in a bid to have more space, utilising a travel “trick” that has been popular on TikTok.</p> <p dir="ltr">The method, which has been dubbed the 'poor man's business class', usually leaves travellers with an empty middle seat and more space, and few travellers opt to pick a middle seat. </p> <p dir="ltr">“When I got to my row the man and woman were chatting and sharing a snack... it was obvious they were together. I mentioned to the man that I'm in the middle, and he got up to let me in,” the unsuspecting traveller wrote on Reddit.  </p> <p dir="ltr">“I asked them if they would prefer to sit together, I said I was totally okay with that. The woman reacted rudely to this and said ‘you're not supposed to be sitting here anyway’.”</p> <p dir="ltr">After noticing how the plane was full, she offered to show the pair her new ticket with the correct seat number on it.</p> <p dir="ltr">“She flicked her hand at my ticket and made a disgusted sound. I offered again if they wanted to sit together to which she didn't reply, her partner said it's okay and... made some small talk,” she continued. </p> <p dir="ltr">The man’s girlfriend then interrupted their conversation to ask,”'Did you use one of those third party websites to book your flight? It's so frustrating when people cheap out to inconvenience others.”</p> <p dir="ltr">The American woman explained that she had booked her flight directly and she had been placed on standby like everyone else and didn't choose the middle seat - she was assigned it.</p> <p dir="ltr">She then tried to keep the peace by refusing to engage with the furious woman.  </p> <p dir="ltr">“I was so done with her attitude, I put my headphones on and attempted to do my own thing,” she explained.</p> <p dir="ltr">But the “entitled” girlfriend wasn't letting it go, as the woman explained, “This woman kept reaching over me and tapping her partner and trying to talk to him in a way that was super intrusive.”</p> <p dir="ltr">“I could tell even her partner was trying to engage her less so that she would hopefully stop, but she didn't.”</p> <p dir="ltr">“I think they tried to pull that tactic where they don't sit together on purpose...hoping no one will sit between them. But on full flights it doesn't work. And even so - it's not the other person's fault.”</p> <p dir="ltr">The traveller's post was met with hundreds of comments slamming the girlfriend’s behaviour, as one person wrote, “It's like a toddler having a tantrum.”</p> <p dir="ltr">“She was disappointed and a total a**hole. Gross entitled people,” another added. </p> <p dir="ltr">Another person applauded the traveller’s level-headed behaviour, writing, “Wow! Prince Andrew to walk Princess Beatrice down the aisle amid scandal

<p>Prince Andrew was notably absent at his daughter’s engagement party on Wednesday – but still plans to walk her down the aisle, reports said.</p> <p>The Duke of York, who stepped back from his royal duties last month amid the scandal surrounding his friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, did not attend Princess Beatrice’s engagement party in London late Wednesday.</p> <p><span>“This is a devastating blow for the Duke and a sign of just how bad things have got,” a source told <em><a href="https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/10582971/prince-andrew-misses-princess-beatrice-engagement-abuse-fear/">The Sun</a></em></span>.</p> <p>“He agreed that he didn’t want to overshadow the event, especially seeing lots of celebrities and high-profile people will be there and it could have put them in a difficult position.”</p> <p>However, Prince Andrew will still walk Beatrice down the aisle at her wedding to Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi in 2020, a source told <em><a href="https://www.etonline.com/prince-andrew-still-planning-to-walk-daughter-princess-beatrice-down-the-aisle-despite-jeffrey">ET</a></em>.</p> <p>The source said the royal family is putting on a “brave face” in response to the Epstein controversy despite their disappointment in the prince.</p> <p>“They love him; he’s family,” the source said.</p> <p>The source added that the wedding plans are yet to be fixed, with further details expected to be disclosed after a number of wedding venues have been explored.</p>

I’m not myself anymore. I’m just too nervous.’”</p> <p>Rather than letting anger ruin her day, Serena remained calm and replied to let him know that she was “okay” with his decision.</p> <p>“Daddy, it’s okay, if you don’t want to come to the wedding at all, that’s okay too,” she wrote.</p> <p>“I’m not going to be upset with you about it, so I don’t want you to be upset about it.”</p> <p>Serena said not everyone can understand her reaction, but she knows the struggles her dad has faced.</p> <p>When Serena and Venus were rising tennis stars, she said many people “didn’t get” her father.</p> <p>“If he doesn’t want to be up there in front of a lot of people, I completely understand. Look, when we first came on the scene, there were a lot of people who didn’t get him.</p> <p>“I don’t think a lot of them wanted to get him. I don’t think a lot of them could have anyway. Our family knows what we have,” Serena said.</p> <p>“We just want each other to be happy. That’s what matters. I don’t think anything could ever change that.”</p>

Who will walk Meghan Markle down the aisle?

<p>Meghan Markle is reportedly “distraught” following her father Thomas’s decision to pull out of her wedding to Prince Harry this weekend.</p> <p>The reclusive former TV lighting director <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><a href="https://www.oversixty.com.au/lifestyle/relationships/2018/05/why-meghan-markles-father-has-pulled-out-of-the-royal-wedding/">initially decided not to attend the royal wedding</a></span> </strong>following the fallout from setting up a series of paparazzi photos. <span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong><a href="https://www.oversixty.com.au/news/news/2018/05/meghan-markles-special-wedding-text-message-to-her-father/">But a day later</a></strong></span>, Markle said he wanted to walk his daughter down the aisle but can no longer do so as he will be facing “major surgery”, after suffering a recent heart attack.  </p> <p>Following the sudden news Markle would no longer be attending, a Kensington Palace spokesman said: “This is a deeply personal moment for Ms Markle in the days before her wedding. Bride walked down the aisle by man who received her father’s heart

The special person Meghan Markle wants to walk her down the aisle

<p>She broke tradition recently by being the first royal girlfriend to be invited to Christmas with the Queen, and now royal-to-be Meghan Markle is set to shake things up on her wedding day too.</p> <p><em>E! <p>The best seat to be in on a plane is an issue as divisive as whether pineapple belongs on a pizza or not. To some people, the aisle will always be the best option. Others couldn’t bear the thought of not being able to take in the view from the window seat. <p>While the middle seat on planes generally doesn’t win many fans, travellers are generally fiercely divided about what offers the better option out of the aisle or window seat.</p> <p>And according to phycologists, your preference says a lot about your personality:</p> <p><strong>If you choose an aisle seat</strong></p> <p>According to University of Washington professor Jonathan Bricker, PhD, if you chose an aisle seat you’re generally going to be someone who values their freedom.</p> <p>“You know you have the ability to get up and walk around without having to ask anyone or climb over your seat mate,” Professor Bricker says.</p> <p>But apparently also be a sign of an introversion</p> <p>Professor Bricker added: “In a large group of people, introverts feel physically uncomfortable and tend to want to stay on the periphery — they don’t like to be surrounded by people or objects on all sides.”</p> <p><strong>If you choose a window seat</strong></p> <p>The window seat is a tricky one. It’s arguably the comfiest seat on the plane with the extra gap between the armrest and the wall, and a spot to lean on. But the person sitting here also has to ask whenever they’re going to the bathroom.</p> <p>“Passengers who favour the window seat like to be in control, tend to take an ‘every man for themselves’ attitude towards life, and are often more easily irritable,” Dr Becky Spelman, chief psychologist at Harley Street’s Private Therapy Clinic told The Telegraph.</p> <p>“They also like to ‘nest’ and prefer to exist in their own bubble.”</p> <p>Behavioural Psychologist Jo Hemmings added: “Champions of the window seat tend to be more selfish as well as less anxious, seasoned flyers who are more confident in disturbing others.”</p> <p>What do you prefer, aisle or window?</p>

The new middle seat that's better than the window or aisle

<p>Crammed in on both sides, the toilets an awkward scramble away, it's no wonder everyone hates sitting in the middle seat on a plane trip.</p> <p>But a US company has come up with a new design that could make the middle option the best seat in the house.</p> <p>The "Stagger Seat", by Molon Labe Designs, moves the middle seat slightly behind and below its neighbours.</p> <p>It is also eight centimetres wider than the window and aisle seats, offering a little more space.</p> <p>"If you're in the aisle or window seat, you couldn't possibly steal the entire armrest – your elbows would be behind your back at a weird angle," Mr Scott told Wired.</p> <p>But the new design offers plenty of room for all, as well as more space for a bigger entertainment screen.</p> <p>The design has yet to be approved by the US Federal Aviation Administration.</p> <p>The company is the most recent to take a look at the middle seat conundrum.</p> <p>Air New Zealand also presented a new wider design for the middle seat at this year's Aircraft Interiors Expo.</p> <p>Would you like to try this new airplane seat design?</p> <p><em>Image credit: Stuff / Molon Lab</em></p> <p><em>First appeared on <a href="http://www.stuff.co.nz/" target="_blank"><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Stuff.co.nz</span></strong></a>.</em></p>

Groom carries his wheelchair-bound wife down the aisle

<p>After a tragic car accident left her in a wheelchair just five weeks before her wedding, Hannah Patterson was told that while she would make a full recovery, she would not be able to walk in time for her big day. However, at the last minute, her loving husband-to-be, Scott, stepped in and carried Hannah down the aisle.</p> <p>“Obviously, being in the wheelchair and not able to walk was very upsetting for me on my wedding day, but I had cried at the rehearsal so I didn’t cry on the day,” she told <a href="http://abcnews.go.com/Lifestyle/groom-carries-bride-aisle-car-accident-breaks-pelvis/story?id=42775317" target="_blank"><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">ABC News</span></strong></a>.</p> <p>“I was determined to stand for my vows,” she added. “It was hard on me to stand for that long even with Stuart holding me up, but it doesn’t seem obvious in the pictures and video the pain I was in.</p> <p>“Stuart has never left my side during all of this,” she said. “I know it has been hard on him to see me like this, but he was strong for both of us. He always made me see how blessed I was... Bride walked down the aisle by man who received her father’s heart

<p>Ten years ago, when she was 23 years old, Jeni Stepien lost her father. Michael Stepien was killed in a robbery in 2006 and, after 24 hours on life support, the family accepted the tragedy and donated his organs.</p> <p>At that time, New Jersey resident Arthur Thomas had been waiting for a heart for ten years. He had been told if he did not receive a transplant in the next few days, he would die. He received Michael’s heart within the next 48 hours.</p> <p>The following Christmas, Arthur or “Tom” sent the Stepiens a thank you card. In the years following, letters turned into phone calls and the families cultivated a special bond. When Jeni started planning her wedding and questioning who would walk her down the aisle, her fiancé had a wonderful idea that couldn’t seem more perfect.</p> <p> “My fiancé suggested I write him a letter; that way Tom would feel in no way obligated or pressured by my request” she told the Huffington Post.</p> <p>A few days after sending the letter she got a phone call, she said. Tom’s answer was yes. He would walk her down the aisle.</p> <p><img width="474" height="493" src="https://oversixtydev.blob.core.windows.net/media/25604/bride.jpg" alt="Bride (1)"/></p> <p>Jeni Stepien was unable to hold back tears when she embraced him for the first time and felt her father’s heart beating inside him.</p> <p>“Meeting Tom was so incredible!” she said. “He is such a gracious and kind-hearted man. You could tell he was so thankful for his life, and that radiated from him.”</p> <p>In sharing her story, Stepien said she hopes it send a very important message to others: Organ donations save lives.</p> <p>“Organ donation can provide an opportunity for a second chance at life. It is an exceptional gift, one that is selfless and generous, and always appreciated by the recipient,” she said. “We were able to see how wonderfully Tom was progressing all of these years, simply thriving, and [that] in turn, helped us with our own grief.”</p> <p>Are you thinking about becoming an organ donor? There is a secret way to raise the armrest on your aisle seat

<p>It’s no secret that aeroplanes are tight for space and riddled with social cues.  There’s negotiating the limited leg room, taking note of recycling etiquette and, of course, the silent negotiation of sharing the arm rest.</p> <p>This is why many opt for the aisle seat- and that option is about to get a whole lot better.</p> <p>Usually, the arm rest in the seats particularly will be movable, to cater for non-ambulatory wheelchair passengers. Simply reach under your armrest, locate the small lever or button, and push or slide to release the hinge lock, which will allow you to raise the armrest and make use of all that empty aisle space.</p> <p>Of course, flight attendants will ask you to leave the arm rest down during take-off, landing and meal service, but for the majority of the flight, those precious extra inches are all yours.</p> <p>Have you done this on a fight? Paraplegic father walks his daughter down the aisle

<p>In 2012, 55-year-old Chris Palmer was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer which left him paralysed. Despite doctors telling him he’d never walk again, Palmer has proved them wrong.</p> <p>“When I lay in hospital after the operation, one of the first things I thought about was my daughter's wedding and how I wasn't going to be able to walk her down the aisle,” he told <a href="http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/paralysed-dad-uses-robot-suit-8030625" target="_blank"><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">The Mirror</span></strong></a>. “It's wonderful I can do this - it's fulfilling something that dads do.”</p> <p>Thanks to a £90,000 (<span>NZ$193,000</span>) robotic exoskeleton (named “Rex”), the loving father had been able to do the unthinkable – walk his daughter down the aisle.</p> <p>Take a look at the incredible footage in the video above.</p> <p>Do you have an inspiring wedding story to share with us?
