Daughter's incredible gesture surprises her cancer-stricken mother

A brave mother fighting cancer has burst into tears at her daughter's amazing display of solidarity, as her mum continues to battle through chemotherapy.

Tracy Mulcahy has been fighting a devastating diagnosis of stage four high-grade ovarian cancer and had started to lose her hair after relentless chemo treatment.

Tracy and her daughter Sophie headed to their local hairdressers, where they have become like family after seven years, where Sophie was given the task of shaving her mum's head.

To everyone's surprise, Sophie was handed the razor and decided to shave off her own long blonde hair in an emotional display of solitary and strength.

Both women burst into tears and held one another, while there was not a dry eye in the salon from other clients and hairdressers.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by ⚡️SOUTH WEST BLONDE SPECIALIST ⚡️ (@bambiblonde__)

The heartwarming moment was captured by the Bambi Blonde salon and posted to their Instagram, where the post racked up hundreds of thousands of likes and comments of support from all over the world.

"The whole salon was in tears," owner Claire Lovett said.

Sophie has since revealed she decided to do it because she didn't want her mother to "go through this alone".

"She means the absolute world to me. Real estate agent divides internet with “sweet gesture” to hopeful homeowner

A real estate agent has divided the internet after sending a hopeful homeowner a scratchie ticket along with a rejection letter.

The anonymous wannabe buyer shared a photo of the letter they received from their agent with the scratchie card alongside it on Reddit, explaining how they had missed out on their dream home.

The letter begins in capital letters, reading “Really sorry you missed out”.

“I wanted to personally thank you for your interest in my recent listing and say how sorry we are that you missed out.”

“I know how keen you were to make it yours, and as much as we love our work, there are parts that are difficult.”

“Telling someone the bad news that they have missed out on a property they are very keen on, is certainly the worst part of our role.”

“I wish we had more properties like this one for those who have missed out on this home.”

“I enclose a scratchie to try and soften the disappointment.”

“The agent said they hoped the wannabe homeowner would win some cash so ‘next time you can extend your offer just that little bit more’.”

The $1 scratch card gave the unsuccessful applicant the chance to win $100,000 in a game of Tic Tac Toad.

The gesture prompted a mixed response from commenters, with most readers calling out the agent for being “condescending”.

One comment read, “Might just be poorly worded, but this comes across very condescending and patronising. ‘Lol sorry you’re too poor. Maybe if you win some money we’ll be able to take it from you.’”

Another pointed out the agent’s potential grovelling to the buyer, saying “Absolutely no real estate agent is sending anything like this to mere tenants.”

Another frustrated renter wrote, “Great! Now if I could get a scratchie with every unsuccessful rental application, I wouldn’t need to rent.”

A few commenters praised the real estate agent’s actions, believing they had good intentions by including the scratchie.

One person wrote, “They didn’t have to give anything but still did. The wording could’ve been better but still, something for nothing.”

One other person was shocked by the support for the agent in the comments of the post, putting it blatantly, “They said ‘so next time you can extend your offer just that little bit more’.”

“Their intention is clear. They’re saying to offer more money. I genuinely am surprised by the comments on this post thinking this is a nice gesture and not blatant manipulation.”

Kate Middleton’s touching gesture to child

Kate Middleton has once again shown her affection for young children by offering up her poppy to a young child who didn’t have one.

The Princess of Wales was visiting Colham Manor Children's Centre as a royal patron for the Maternal Mental Health Alliance.

A mother of three herself, the Princess spoke to new mums and families who have struggled since giving birth.

On her way out, she bumped into three-year-old Akeem, who bombarded Kate with a series of questions – including asking for her name.

“What is your name?” the curious kid asked.

“My name is Catherine. Nice to meet you,” she responded.

It’s not everyday you get a poppy from a Princess 😊 Akeem who’s 3 was very chatty when Kate unexpectedly stopped to say hello at a maternity mental health visit so she gave him her remembrance poppy. It's for remembering all the soldiers who died in the war," the Princess told the young boy as she removed the poppy from her coat.

“Here you go, that’s for you. Small gestures are most important in relationships

It’s not grand gestures and lavish gifts that make love last but the little things that you do and say that show how much you care.

The Enduring Love project by Open University in Britain surveyed more than 5,000 people on their relationships and found, contrary to popular belief, it’s not big displays of love that count but the mundane, day-to-day gestures, like sharing a cup of coffee, that helped sustain a relationship and were crucial to relationship satisfaction.

“Surprise gifts and small acts of kindness were valued highly, with ‘a cup of tea’ being singled out as a significant sign of their partner's appreciation.

Bouquets of flowers and boxes of chocolates were seen as less important than the thoughtfulness behind the gesture,” the study states.

Jacqui Gabb, co-author of the project, noted, “Actions really do speak louder than words and many people consider a loving gesture to be as valuable as hearing ‘I love you’.

Grand romantic gestures, although appreciated, don't nurture a relationship as much as bringing your partner a cup of tea in bed, or watching TV together.”

The project identified sharing values, faith, beliefs, tastes, ambitions and interests with their partner, as well as expressions of intimacy and being aware of one another’s needs as important to relationship satisfaction.

It also found having children affected relationship quality more than any other factor and mothers are happiest in their life than any other group.

Co-author Janet Fink said: "With a tough economic climate, the rise in grey divorce and social media opening up new ways to start affairs, it isn't always easy to keep love alive today.

"However, our survey has shown that surviving adversities – even very difficult situations such as being out of work – can make a relationship much stronger. What doesn't break you can make you."

Image: Shutterstock

"Brilliant gesture": Secret Santa pays off local toy store lay-bys

A kind gesture has eased the financial burden of Christmas for shoppers at a Townsville toy shop, in north-eastern Queensland, after a generous stranger paid their lay-by balances.

Natasha Vidler said she was “in disbelief and shock” when she was told over the phone that $170 had been paid off her toy bill at Townsville Toyworld.

“I rang my husband and I was pretty much in tears, tears of happiness,” Ms Vidler said.

“We’re forever grateful. This time of year is a bit of a struggle for everybody, not only financially but mentally, emotionally.”

Though the toy store wouldn’t say what the gifts totalled, Ms Vidler said she was one of 20 customers who benefitted from the unknown woman’s kindness.

The mother-of-two has spent the last two weeks in hospital, and said the contribution would make this year’s Christmas that much more special for her family.

“Now the kids are going to have an extra-special Christmas thanks to some total lovely stranger,” she said.

Another recipient, Mark Jones, had been paying off presents for his children and granddaughter and said he was “blown away” by the gesture.

“I thought it was an absolutely brilliant gesture,” Mr Jones said.

The Townsville truck driver said he was being evicted from his rental crisis amid the city’s housing crisis, so every extra dollar made a difference.

“It’s been a bit of a tough year, not just for me but for everybody,” he said.

According to forecasting from the National Retail Association (NRA), Australians are set to spend a record $20.5 billion in the 10 days leading up to Christmas.

But the spending comes at a particularly challenging time for many families, with chief executive of the Queensland Council of Social Services Aimee McVeigh saying that 250,000 children had one or both parents relying on income support.

“These parents are having to choose between paying rent, food, electricity and medical bills, never mind Christmas presents,” Ms McVeigh said.

“While the unemployment rate might be lower than it was last year, there are more people than ever in Queensland who are relying on income support payments of just $45 a day.”

In Queensland alone, NRA chief executive Dominique Lamb said people are expected to spend $3.9 billion over the next 10 days.

“We’ve had our international borders closed, our domestic borders closed, people have been staying home and certainly saving their money,” she said.

“There seems to be a push for joy after what’s been a really long 18 months.”

Image: Getty Images

Bride's touching gesture for blind husband on wedding day

Kelly Ann Ferraro surprised her husband, Paralympian, musician, motivational speaker and blind man Anthony S Ferraro, by wearing a tactile wedding dress on their big day.

"I've also said she's my eyes in this world, but for her to have a dress custom made so I could feel and touch it meant the world to me," Anthony Ferraro told USA TODAY. "I could feel her. I could feel she looked beautiful."

Kelly Ann was continuing a tradition she started on the couple’s first date in 2018, when she wore a velvet dress so he could “feel how she looked”. Her wedding dress was embedded with woven cotton flowers and lace, and in a Tiktok video shared by Anthony, he sounded overjoyed that he was able to “feel how beautiful she was” on their wedding day.

@asfvision
🤍🎥I married my camera person @turmericteatime #blind #wedding #relationshipgoals #lucky #pov
♬ A Thousand Years - Christina Perri

The couple’s first date took place at the New York premiere of Anthony’s documentary, ‘A Shot in the Dark’, which chronicles his journey as a blind wrestler and athlete. After meeting Anthony, Kelly Ann researched blindness, including blindness experienced by those who can perceive some light, like Anthony.

She learned to place pillows and bubble wrap around sharp objects in their shared apartment, and after learning that he loved the feeling of velvet and soft fabrics, a tactile wedding dress seemed like an obvious choice. Kelly Ann collaborated with Loulette Bride to create a dress that featured woven cotton flowers, a velvet waistband, and soft, gentle fabris like chiffon and lace.

Speaking to USA Today, Kelly Ann said, "The whole time at the aisle I was whispering to him 'touch my dress, touch my dress,' and it made me so happy to know he could feel and enjoy my dress as much as I did.”

Kelly Ann and Anthony’s mother planned the whole wedding with Anthony’s comfort in mind. Prior to the ceremony, Kelly Ann wrote Anthony a letter in braille. They were married on a beachfront property in Maine, and the wedding was held during the day since Anthony can perceive shadows and light. The reception was held in a tent, and the poles were wrapped in bubble wrap disguised with decorations so Anthony could safely move around. "The thoughtfulness and work behind making our wedding accessible for me meant everything. She's truly my best friend and like I said, 'my eyes in the world,'" Anthony said.

Describing Kelly Ann as his “partner in crime”, Anthony says in the viral video of their wedding day, “I can’t wait to spend so much more time together and create so many more beautiful memories on our adventures in life.”

"Our story sheds a lot of light on just joy and unity, even for those with disabilities like me who didn't think love was possible," Anthony said. "The world needs more light and I hope our story shows some of that."

Image: Anthony S. Ferraro/Tiktok

It was a great house and I’m glad I was able to share it with you.”

The landlord also shared the same amount of money from the sale of the house to other tenants who lived there, saying, “some of the rent you paid each month contributed to paying off the principle of my mortgage.”

Chris was shocked by the kind gesture, saying he had been thinking about the act of kindness for days.

He said, “I am still completely beyond an actual way to describe what this act means to me.”

“All that I can say is that there are people who talk about their values and there are people who actually live them, and the reason I wanted to share this is that I want to encourage us all to actually live our values.”

“Do it off the clock, do it when no one is watching, do it always.”

Doctor's incredible $800,000 gesture to cancer patients

A doctor from the US has helped out 200 of his former patients by forgiving their medical debts, as he plans to close his practice this year.

Oncologist Dr Omar Atiq plans to shut his practice, The Arkansas Cancer Clinic, down in March this year, after serving the community for close to 29 years.

After closing up shop, Dr Atiq tried to collect payments from some of his former patients but didn't get very far.

Speaking to Good Morning America, he revealed some people were unable to cover their debts, so after a discussion with his wife, they decided to forgive the debts of some 200 of his former clients.

"We saw that we could do it and then just went ahead and did it," he said.

Dr Atiq's patients received a greeting card the week of Christmas, explaining their debt had been paid for and that the Arkansas Cancer Clinic "was proud to serve you as a patient".

“Although various health insurances pay most of the bills for majority of patients, even the deductibles and co-pays can be burdensome,” the card said.

“Unfortunately, that is the way our health care system currently works. Arkansas Cancer Clinic is closing its practice after over 29 years of dedicated service to the community.

“The clinic has decided to forego all balances owed to the clinic by its patients.”

In the end, Dr Atiq ended up erasing US$650,000, or roughly AU$842,000, of his patient's debt and explained ever since he opened up his practice, the thought of his sick patients worrying about money made him uneasy.

"I saw patients over the years who just didn’t have anything or who went bankrupt trying to pay for their treatment," he told Good Morning America.

"In many ways it seems like a totally unfair situation."

Good Morning America reported Dr Atiq is now working at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock.
